Yeah the focus on this set was the realistic accuracy of the train modes. I personally would recommend the Moon Studios over this as it has a great overall design and quality and isn’t an overpriced set.
Combiner Wars once again reigns supreme. Yes, that toyline suffered from a lack of limb variety and some torsos being worse than others, but at least they were all around the same plastic quality, were durable, and worked about the same for each limb mode. Standout limb boys were Rook/Swindle/Hound, the Skydive/Air Raid mold (so nice, they reused it in POTP twice), Alpha Bravo/Blades/Vortex, and Off-Road/First Aid/Ironhide/Trailbreaker; standout torsos were Silverbolt/Cyclonus/Scattershot and Hot Spot/Onslaught/Pyra Magna.
Dang it, I forgot Sky Lynx! He’s honestly really fun as just a budget version of the character if you don’t want to splurge on his Earthrise version AND Sky Reign incorporates his lynx half pretty well as a compromise for him being stuck in bird-cat mode

I think MP06 Kaen causes most of problems of combiner: short legs, big ass, unstable, loose joints... in the internet, i saw some kits that replace Kaen completely and that made Raiden so much better.
This set looked promising, as Takara had a lot of training in both Tramsformers and model trains. The train modes were on the right track, for sure - but skewed priorities ended up derailing the whole package. It's hard to Express what a letdown this was - the combined mode can't pull the weight of its own carriage, and unless stationed on its stand, it falls over like it was shot with a Bullet. Though, it's hard to say if the Moon Studios version is better, since many copies are reported to brake down. But at the end of the day, this release was a trainwreck - a steaming pile of coal. Honestly, I think it could've turned out better if it was done in CHUG. ...And that's just about every train pun I could fit in there.
I feel they really should have made trainvots that were normal and then have trainbots that were focused on the train aspect and the combine part was just a side feature
Yeah, it's a huge letdown for both demographics. Transformers fans won't want it because it's super flimsy when combined and even on their own the figures still have their own issues, meanwhile train fans won't want it either since they could easily buy more intricate models that run and function for the same price as these figures. Takara could've easily compromised to appeal to both target demographics but due to the focus on one, now neither want it in the end, which is such a bummer too since train transformers outside of Astrotrain feel like a rarity.

I honestly really like how this set looks, I understand that the Moon Studios one is more appealing due to the allegedly better quality control (I do not own either set so I cannot say for sure.), but I enjoy the paint details and the attempt to try to be an overall callback to model trains, the og toys, and their anime counterparts. Hot take: in my opinion these train fellas should have been standard legacy mainline figures...or should not have been made at all. I still admire what Takara tried to do. Paintwork on these are amazing and look nice on display...but as a whole, Eeeeeee
I've sort of switched to collecting just core class now, and the occasional bigger bot, and I feel like a Raiden could work at that scale? making accurate modes isn't necessary, because it's legends and it's small, and compromises could be made like with Volcanicus but they're trains so it probably wouldn't be as many. generally I feel like after Volcanicus, if they do a better system for arms, that size could work really well for mostly-all-inclusive combiners, 6 bots especially since then the torso doesn't have to be bigger, not really any weight concerns and they're affordable and don't have to really deal with scaling with things as much since it's all about the same height.
I’m only interested in 2 or 3 of these figures, mainly the arm guys and maybe one other, but I never really cared about the combination (even less after watching this video) but I just think a couple of them look pretty cool.
Dang, it really fell short of my expectations, it makes me feel sad that they couldn't get the "Flagship" set to wow the fans. I mean he is large and fancy with a heck of a shelf presence, i just hope he stays up on it safely.
So I've been messing with my copy, and either I got better qc or did something different? Mine doesn't fall apart. On Kaen try turning the hip connector parts 180° so the detailed part is on the back? It changes how far Kaen's lower legs goes in. Shouki to Kaen's slider also stops at first but can go a bit further in. In combined mode his shoulders can go all the way up but you gotta make sure nothing is clashing between the wing, chest & shoulders. Yukikaze's combined ankle is actually on a screw that you can tighten. It's less of a mess but I agree, still a PAIN
Nice review, Watching it come apart is stressful all over again, i was surprised you said its their first time making a combiner since we have seen many combiners over the years from takara, most recently Menasor. Hopepfully MPG gets better over time. Have fun✌️
Thanks man! I more meant their first time making an mp combiner, but Takara has made several other combiners in the past so this one I feel still shouldn't have been like this
I mean the trains look great very accurate the other modes are alright or not good the combiner needs a life support stand to have a chance to stand up. The combiner looks alright and that’s just it has a hard time holding a pose and trying to get him into a pose ends up in stuff falling apart. If this was a mainline thing made up of voyagers and leaders with these issues it would suck but not spent over 1000$ sucking like if this set is gonna be 1000$ then it should feel like that but this set doesn’t hold up
These look better with chug than MP. I think that really exemplifies their problems. I never saw these and said oh cool a new masterpiece. I might not be a fan of mp44 but when I see it I know it’s a masterpiece. These look like really expensive main line hasbro figures.
This thing is definitely a disaster, but at least the upper body looks somewhat nice. Plus I feel like it would be very popular despite the flaws with model train collectors.
I've already broken my yukikaze at the leg because of little clearance for transformation, to the point that he has been put back in his box. Haven't messed with it for a couple of weeks.
Yeah...Takara bit off way more than they could chew. Six piece combiner with all the individual vehicle and robot modes also looking good, when the original figures had never gotten a modernized update? Way too much to handle. Hopefully, Super Ginrai is of better quality.
Thank you for the video. I already bought shouki a few months back but I was Leary about spending a grand on this. Giving the poor quality I definitely won’t now
I lucked out with a really good copy of Raiden, and my Getsui is still broken (the screw in his waist/combined mode ankle just... stopped working. Thankfully the assembly still works as a peg). Still, the Moon Studios name aside it *is* Zeta toys and they *do* have a reputation.
So your Getsuei may be a quality control issue. Mine is fine and connects securely, Yukikaze, I have the same issue with his legs though it started recently when I began messing with them, Shouki's backpack, I've seen a video where you can compress it more and make it not a mess, as for the arm guys, I usually have something clear behind them to help them stand up, also I only recently began having issues with the combine mode staying together but for some reason it seems to have something to do with the stand. Also, my whole set was $898.12 after shipping and tax, AND I got the MPG-06S version of Kaen, I still love this set, problems and all.
Is it true that this is the future of all Masterpiece figures now that the line has ended? I don't want a future of MPG like this. I'm really put off of this line of figures, and I love trains, robots, and train robots.
I have the Moon Studios Raiden, and while I thankfully haven't experienced any of the breakage issues, it does seem like a lot of the combination spots are uncooperative, and posing is incredibly difficult.
I had wanted this set cause I ached to see a modern Raiden, but decided it wait til I saw how it all came together. I'm now quite happy I did wait cause it clearly didn't come together at all. It's an utter train wreck.
I still can’t believe how terrible this entire set looks, especially in combined mode. I could care less about cartoon accuracy, but that’s an abysmal looking combined mode. And then to add on top of it how bad the tolerances are and how little it’s articulated, I just can’t understand what takara was thinking. I’ve seen a lot of people giving this thing a pass and for how expensive it is I just don’t see any redeeming qualities, even if you are really into the model trains. Truly sad to see this being considered a masterpiece, and even more sad to see how far takara has fallen.
Like I said with LazyEyebrow with his Shouki video, the way this thing frustrated you, it sounds like you got tied to the front of a bullet train that went thru ALL of of Japan at the fastest speed possible
@@ThatToyGuy how much does the upgrade kit cost??? i hope Is not more than the robot and i also Hope tat you make a video about It because i found no information about the kit.
They tried to appeal to train collectors since there are a ton of them in Japan and Transformers as a whole is kind of a dead brand there, which means they made each train scale with HO Model trains. Unfortunately it came with a lot of problems the designers weren't prepared to deal with since suddenly the dude who forms the lower body and thighs is now too small and they have way more mass than they know what to deal with in most of the members leading to some pretty badly designed solutions. It's not a good first try at a Masterpiece Combiner but ehh at least I heard it sold well with the people they targeted with this set.
I would love for it to happen and maybe have Hasbro pulled a takara and change toys but still invoke the original team, like maybe make all six take an American locomotive design instead of Japanese and use fallen railroad names on them instead would be so cool and I believe would sell like hot cakes here in USA and canada
@@Heroduothecomedian come to think of it , that would rock. But i also have another proposition:what if they Made the trainbots into steam engines?, british ones to be presise. It would work as an au of sorts, like, what if they landed on britain instead of Japan?

This is unacceptable. It's nice of you to review it because I think Jobby - for instance - would have an aneurysm out of rage.
Combiners aren't that bad in smaller scales, but masterpieces don't make for good combiners due to how many moving parts there are in each individual figure.
Man, it looks like you got borked on QC with these guys because my set doesn’t have most of the problems shown here (aside from Yukikaze’s panels not sticking together). The key to getting him stood up solidly is by leaning him forward in a gundam stance. When the tops of Getsuei and Yukikaze are level with the table then you know it’s in the proper configuration
Could you do a video on your opinion of what a combiner should be, I know we have had many vids on combining transformers, but what you consider as your most enjoyable combining method is what im interested by. There are the armor ups like Omega Prime and seige Ultra magnus, the easy links like the combiner wars or fall of cybertron Bruticus, the just a limb like the bumblebee combiner from rid, im intrigued into what you like in a combining transformer, mine is RiD 2001 rail racer as it locks together well, has fun proportions and is what I want from a train combiner. Please and thanks 😊 🙏
24:14 Just wanted to say that Raiden's shoulder joints CAN go further than that; You just need to move Shouki's shoulder wings out of the backpack's way.
I wish I could buy these guys, I love trains and I love transformers. Sure the combine mode sucks but this was takara first try of a combiner at masterpiece levels so I knew it wasn't gonna be perfect so did that make me mad and wanna meme takara and Raiden,no because I was happy to finally see Raiden get some modern combiner unlike a lot of other official and non official transformers combiners
I have both the MS and the MPG sets, I like the way they look, but both are very unwieldy in their own ways. I’ve been wanting a new Raiden for a long time to display opposite to devastator, but unfortunately it feels like we’ll have to wait for either Hasbro to make a proper CHUG one, or another 3p company to tackle these boys. Either way, I need more train combiners in my life
I knew the combined had a lot of issues but I was considering buying this for the bot modes, cos I enjoy a good combiner team working as like a unified squadron... so hearing the bot modes also have quite a lot of issues is very disappointing for the price.
So basically what went wrong with this was they focused more on selling these to train collectors than to transformers collectors.
It was made to be compatible with Tomy's train sets.

Have fun✌️
Thanks man! I more meant their first time making an mp combiner, but Takara has made several other combiners in the past so this one I feel still shouldn't have been like this
@@ThatToyGuy ahhh ok👍
A literal train wreck. WHY TAKARA, WHY?!?!
I mean the trains look great very accurate the other modes are alright or not good the combiner needs a life support stand to have a chance to stand up. The combiner looks alright and that’s just it has a hard time holding a pose and trying to get him into a pose ends up in stuff falling apart.
If this was a mainline thing made up of voyagers and leaders with these issues it would suck but not spent over 1000$ sucking like if this set is gonna be 1000$ then it should feel like that but this set doesn’t hold up
I recently started a new job and had these figures on my radar. I'm glad I saw this before making an expensive mistake.
These look better with chug than MP. I think that really exemplifies their problems. I never saw these and said oh cool a new masterpiece. I might not be a fan of mp44 but when I see it I know it’s a masterpiece. These look like really expensive main line hasbro figures.
i like mine, but i knew what I was getting into from the start. a cool display piece in combined mode
Kinda happy this was the first mp combiner instead of devastator. That would have been a lot more disappointing
At least devastators are coming out in the 3rd party market
Except isn’t MP dead now because of these things?
@@frenchfriedbagel7035 weirdly not, it's just moving over to mpg
This thing is definitely a disaster, but at least the upper body looks somewhat nice. Plus I feel like it would be very popular despite the flaws with model train collectors.
They really brought back the original combiner's clunky-ness.
I've already broken my yukikaze at the leg because of little clearance for transformation, to the point that he has been put back in his box. Haven't messed with it for a couple of weeks.
is it just me or does the combine mode look squshed
The G in the new line won't necessarily mean "Gattai." Its just there to sound cool.
I have the Moon Studios Raiden, and while I thankfully haven't experienced any of the breakage issues, it does seem like a lot of the combination spots are uncooperative, and posing is incredibly difficult.
Even at $600 USD this is BAD. That is not including shipping,BTW
"Trainbots, Combine to form Raiden!"
I had wanted this set cause I ached to see a modern Raiden, but decided it wait til I saw how it all came together. I'm now quite happy I did wait cause it clearly didn't come together at all.
It's an utter train wreck.
"This is bad comedy!"
The upper legs are too short Is there and upgrade kit or something???
Yes
@@ThatToyGuy how much does the upgrade kit cost??? i hope Is not more than the robot and i also Hope tat you make a video about It because i found no information about the kit.
They look good after a fashion, but the only way these will be in my collection is if they're _seriously marked down!_
Someone tell me why this set looks awful? Like they look cheaper than the earthspark figs.
@@kendiaz89 that's just awful...
For a grand? HELL NAW
Hope they remake the trainbots in legacy at a affordable price
Whilst i have considered the mpg trainbots as more fit for chug than mp......maybe a remake at that scale would Be for the best.
Not happening soon since Hasbro has an allergy with Train Transformers not named Astrotrain since Rail Racer from RID2001 flopped.
@@kendiaz89 aw man, well...... we'll have to do with what we have
I would love for it to happen and maybe have Hasbro pulled a takara and change toys but still invoke the original team, like maybe make all six take an American locomotive design instead of Japanese and use fallen railroad names on them instead would be so cool and I believe would sell like hot cakes here in USA and canada
I would have preferred a Titan class Raiden in the vain of Devastator and Predaking.
as i had the box set for the 6th one once i get them all they will either be in train mode or on a stand in combined mode
I think I’ll just get one or two and really enjoy the train/robot
The combined mode just feels like a super link level afterthought
“Pain” enough said of these combiners set
Enough said about that toy guy as he fights with the qc goblin till he is a father
Combiners aren't that bad in smaller scales, but masterpieces don't make for good combiners due to how many moving parts there are in each individual figure.
@@BlitzkriegOmega so true
Man, it looks like you got borked on QC with these guys because my set doesn’t have most of the problems shown here (aside from Yukikaze’s panels not sticking together).
The key to getting him stood up solidly is by leaning him forward in a gundam stance. When the tops of Getsuei and Yukikaze are level with the table then you know it’s in the proper configuration
Maybe that would be viable if the left leg stayed in place.

Just wanted to say that Raiden's shoulder joints CAN go further than that; You just need to move Shouki's shoulder wings out of the backpack's way.
Epick fig thankyou for sharing dont think i gona transform him more than 1 time before display
For the amount it costs that is inexcusable. I can't believe they are hanging up MP to focus on MPG
How do I find this where to find this please I neeeed this 🌞
I have both the MS and the MPG sets, I like the way they look, but both are very unwieldy in their own ways. I’ve been wanting a new Raiden for a long time to display opposite to devastator, but unfortunately it feels like we’ll have to wait for either Hasbro to make a proper CHUG one, or another 3p company to tackle these boys. Either way, I need more train combiners in my life
I got so much shit about my Shouki shoulders on my video. One just won't stay together in combined form. I wanted to like this. I really did
i think takara didnt try to fit HO in this ,the main IDEA was to make it HO then everything else tricked down from it
He's smaller than I expected lol
Its so weird how Kaen is more ass than torso. They could have designed Kaen better by parts forming to it stacks higher in combiner mode.
@@DewlayLomo I would complain about parts forming, but it does it anyways so who cares anymore
Yeah Takara does not know how to make things combine
I knew the combined had a lot of issues but I was considering buying this for the bot modes, cos I enjoy a good combiner team working as like a unified squadron... so hearing the bot modes also have quite a lot of issues is very disappointing for the price.
Wow I didn’t realize it was that small
