As an Asian, I love it when people from different parts of the world make different types of fried rice. I've never thought about using ham but it sounds delicious! Your method of making the fried rice is different from the way my mother makes it (which is how I make it now) but as a student living away from home, it's a very easy, adaptable, and cheap! I'm excited to try this out sometime next week. (:
Woa this is like what my grandmother used to make me when I was a kid! Well, except she used to put some dashi (fish stock) and bean sprouts. Sometimes she even added some red chilly paste for a extra kick. This really hit back on my childhood memories matte. This is the ultimate confort food for me! As she used to say: "Sometimes the tastiest food is the one that your loved ones cooks for you no matter how simple they are". Cheers!
I love using left over fried rice to make a stir fried rice it's not really soft and not really sticking together. better texture than using a new cooked rice. You had made a fantastic delicious recipe. I'm going to try it later donal
Whatever leftover can make a nice fried rice hehe. Sometimes I use leftover fried tofu (I slide it into thin pieces); other times I add pickle (not too much), season with fish sauce, it gives a subtle sour taste to the rice, which is refreshing and easy to digest too :)
I love fried rice - it's so easy, quick, & filling to make! Plus I can sneak so many vegetables in. But I add about a tablespoon of seasoned rice vinegar in with the soy sauce and sesame oil. You can't taste vinegar at the end, but it adds a nice touch.
Ah, so now I need to make sure we have leftover rice this weekend! This looks like a subtle way of getting picky eaters to have a little bit of vegetable. Thanks for the recipe!
its 02:25 am in India, I had my dinner maybe 6 hour back and you made me hungry again, god, what do I do...I saw some of your video today, as I just subscribed to your channel, believe me, tomorrow is Sunday and you gave me some perfect dish to enjoy my weekend..thanks you Donal....happy eating...
Egg fried rice is a life saver, no doubt. It's the first thing I "teach" people to cook, when they ask.....besides, it's a great "recipe" to know when it's time to "clear the fridge"....thank you!
Egg-chicken fried rice is what I once cooked for a classmate during my undergrad days (I used much the same recipe, minus the sesame oil and plus some MSG) to prove to him that I could cook. He said he didn't think I could. Thanks for bringing back those memories. :-)
Donal, i have recently found your channel and i find your cooking close to heart and home cooking that reminds me of my mom! Keep posting great food that will allow us to explore in our boundaries and our taste buds as well (:
I usually fry my rice separately to brown it a little then I crack an egg in the rice, it gives the rice more flavour and a nicer mouth feel. After that I add in the cooked vegetables. I also add fish sauce to my fried rice.
I used to make fried rice all the time with my leftovers, until one fateful day when I did a ridiculous amount of oversalting. Now I just can't haha. But you want to know what kind of Chinese inspired food I do love to make? Bao! Like, steamed buns (specifically the pork ones). It'd be awesome if you did a video on those! And if you wanted to do some sweet steamed buns, you could do the classic red bean, or put in some homemade almond paste, which is my favorite! Thank you for your amazing channel!
The recipe I have for stir-fried rice is very similar recipe to yours. It's divine! I haven't made it in such a long time. I will have to remedy that very soon! A great vid as always and I would love to see more Asian recipes. Happy New Year! #stirfriedrice #donalskehan #quickdinnerrecipes
Thankyou so much for always being so humble (despite having the talents a world-class chef) and listening to our recipe requests! Love this recipe and will definitely give it a go over the weekend :D Hope to see more recipes like this regularly. -Cheers! xox
Since every time someone makes a video recipe for fried rice, this comes up ... This is probably the most "authentic" fried rice recipe I've seen on TH-cam, not because the recipe is "correct" but because fried rice has always been about using up leftovers and odds and ends left in the fridge along with some cheap ingredients. There is no "correct" recipe, just the right idea of how to approach it. Every household has their own set of recipes, so you're encouraged to experiment until you find a combination you like! I always have to chuckle a bit to myself whenever someone talks about how a fried rice recipe is "authentic" or "inauthentic" because of some ingredient that was put in or left out.
I don't eat meat but this also (of course) works really well with tofu! But sometimes I skip that and just bulk it up more with a ton of kale haha. Mangetout and a LOAD of chilli are also must haves for me but I do love how easy and adaptable this recipe is :)
well i like fried rice with pickled cabbage or kimchi (basically every pickled goodness works) and i also scramble my eggs with the rice nice and hot in the pan (similar to that mac n cheese method) and my grandma freezes the rice before hand to prevent lumps also for a crispy texture and sometimes she mixes the eggs and the seasonings with the rice before putting them in the pan. anw nice job (as always) w the video Donal =))
Awesome!! Yup I've made egg fried rice in the past. Only difference when I make it is that I add soy sauce to the water I cook my rice in to add a touch more dose of asian flavor :) But I like your way better :D Thank you for yet another quick hunger fix, yet again!
Mouthwatering! Thank goodness I found a young Irish chef who's also very cool. Will gladly recommend your recipes to my Irish friends as I know they'll be able to relate! If you have time will you do college-inspired meals? We're talking about quick, easy recipes that you can make and keep for a week! ;)
I am Singaporean. For me, fried rice is a comfort food. Actually, my favourite dish in the whole wide world is fried rice! My favourite kind of fried rice is egg fried rice, in which every single grain of rice is coated with egg. Heaven! Asian Recipes I would like to see: - Curry Chicken (Indian style) - Tom Yum Soup - Laksa
I love how you look like you just got out of bed and started cooking. I mean lets be honest we've seen people who does this videos makes effort to themselves to look well prepared. And you dont even try and still can rock it.
sometimes when i feel like eating light but still carby, i make mine with just eggs, lettuce, scallions and some sea salt and pepper! comfort food in its simplest form ! :)
Also, for a quick sweet 'n sour sauce that goes great with this: add some rice vinegar, sugar, soy sauce and chicken stock (or just some water) to a small pan and let it reduce by half.
This is how I usually make fried rice except that I add siracha and I let the rice kind of toast/caramelize in parts for more texture. Oh and a bit of rice wine vinegar is very nice with it! Great recipe!
I love making fried rice this way! I'm a student right now, so I'll always steal some cooked rice and red onions from the dining hall to make fried rice later. I use a bag of frozen mixed veggies because college = mini fridge, but the end product is still delicious!
Hello Donal, I think your cooking videos and shows are just great and your food looks very delicious. I discovered you by pure chance a couple of years ago on a cooking show from what you did in Italy (showed here on Swedish TV) which I enjoyed very much, your personality is bubbly and funny and I believe you are a brilliant cook. I´m wishing you lots of success in everything that you do, and I hope your new move to the U.S with launching books and shows there goes brilliantly also. I just recently discovered your youtube channel here and been checking out a few recipes once in a while, they always make me so hungry haha :-D
I love using leftover rice, but never put egg through it, as i'm not fussed about egg fried rice. Nice done up with noodles too. Love Asian dishes so anything would be great. My daughter and I would like to try some easy South Korean dishes...if you have any. :-)
Really glad that I found your channel and just a hello from Florida and hope to see y’all sometime have to make you some homemade biscuits and tomato gravy oh that’s some country cooking right there but I love your excitement for cooking you’re like me I get so excited I can’t help myself

For a better rice texture, you can add the raw egg to the rice then mix it all together so you still get the scrambled/omlettey eggs but a better-binded fried rice!! Another upgrade would be to make like little egg strips so make an egg pancake or basically very flat egg and cut them into little thin strips to garnish on top. They look beautiful but add an extra punch to it too!! hope this helps :)
I am Vietnamese we do cook this, but in another as you had been to Vietnam you must have taste it. It's a bit easier, but it taste great. :D Btw love your videos!
You took me back to china :3 but I recommend adding some Sambal because that seriously just amps the flavour. I've been stalking you're videos for 3 days as well just so you know xD
Happy Chinese New Year, Donal!! I love fried rice! One of my favorite is char siu (barbecue pork) and egg fried rice. Have you tried char siu before? I'd really love to see your take on more Chinese dishes like dim sum and dumplings! :)
i used to hate many veggies but i eat green beans, mum used to make green beans, ham and eggs fried rice (seasoned with a bit of soy sauce, salt and white pepper) student-budget friendly indeed haha.
This is my go-to "I'm too lazy to bother to cook" recipe, with whatever is left in the fridge just like you said.. Haha.. A long time ago while traveling I ate some sort of chicken with orange sauce and, since we don't have it here where I live, I have been dreaming of eating it again but don't know how to cook it! I could be wrong but I think it's an Asian recipe!
Just found your channel, really love your style of cooking and enthusiasm for food! Student meals would be great thanks - maybe a basic shopping list for when you go away for uni would be a good video too? Thanks xxx
Loooks so good! Fried rice is one of my all time faves and I love your take on it. So much colour and flavour in there :D I really like adding tomatoes, green chillies and some coriander to my fried rice ^ ^
I love this because I always make fried rice at home, being Chinese and all :P I personally love it with onions and frozen corn and frozen peas, though I may have to try it with some carrots because it looks beautiful! Also, shoutout to your chopstick skills! xD

Return the cooked egg to the wok, mixing well. Serve: Serve the fried rice in bowls, garnished with additional chili and spring onions. Enjoy: Enjoy your delicious and comforting bowl of leftover fried rice, packed with flavors and adaptable to whatever ingredients you have on hand.
I prefer add the sesame oil at the very last time. Because of the flavor/scent, and nutritional value of sesame oil. And I hope I can taste you the original sesame oil ... if you taste it, you could even cry because it is sooooo nice !
What do you use to cut up your carrots? Great meal,I always make something like this when I'm in a hurry. I mostly use chicken, broccoli, carrots, peas, courgette and mushrooms Thank you for great recipes :-)
The realisation that you used a wok to cook fried rice. And me using a frying pan to cook mine! And I'm supposed to be Chinese! Lols! But seriously, the fried rice looks awesome! Thumbs up! And happy Chinese New Year!
I am half asian and I grew up with this dish. In the Philippines (in my island region) we call it Kalu-kalu meaning: mix every inside. .. wait you put some sea in there? I all way use with fried rice, I guesy soy sauce way salty enough
It's absolutely freezing outside, I'm not feeling well and this is the first thing I've had appetite for that isn't toast all day. No, seriously, that and some white miso soup would be SO GOOD right about now.
try adding the egg last.. make a hole in the middle of the rice.. than add little bit of oil and add the egg.. quickly stir.. it will be epic.. and if you like a little bit extra aroma try using duck egg
Usually when I make fried rice, I'd pan fry the pre cooked rice in a bit of soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, salt, and cracked pepper. Then I'd add the cooked veggies, and last in would be the the fried egg and bean sprouts. Think I'll give your recipe of it a try though, and see how the two dishes compare. Which one I'd like more I guess. xD
its a very easy yet lovely recipe. i usually make it this way minus the ham offcourse. but i must say it was a beautiful way of cutting the carrots though. can u tell me how did u do it?
Hello Donal, so I thought about it for a bit, and - if the option is still available - I would like to suggest more tasty soups and, most importantly, more cooking with mum!
This really looks awesome & I make a lot of Asian food & im really excited about trying your recipe, have you done lo mein & Chicken & Broccoli or beef and broccoli doesn’t matter shrimp shrimp and broccoli but I would love to see your take on something like that and especially the lo mein
This isn't how we Hong Kong people make fried rice tho but yours looks amazing too xdd Actually separating the egg white and yolk for this dish is better, which by adding the rice when the egg yolk just add into the wok, the egg yolk will coat on to each piece of rice and make them golden and not sticking tgt ^^ Then add the egg white or another egg after frying can have the pieces of egg in the dish.
This looks so good Donal. If your viewers want student friendly meals I suggest you show them how to make japanese yakiudon. Its cheap, delicious, and easy. (Although no one makes it as well as my mother in law lol)
Fried Rice is so delish :) I was wondering do you have any good asian recipes for gamey meat like moose? I have a freezer full of moose meat and I would like to try to make something different from it
As an Asian, I love it when people from different parts of the world make different types of fried rice. I've never thought about using ham but it sounds delicious! Best leftover dish ever. It is one of my go to dishes when I don't know what to cook. Never fails.
Thanks for the great tip for making use of our leftover rice instead of wasting it!
Egg fried rice is a life saver, no doubt. It's the first thing I "teach" people to cook, when they ask.....besides, it's a great "recipe" to know when it's time to "clear the fridge"....thank you!
I love this fried rice recipe Donal!!
RinS CookBook me too :)
Happy Chinese New Year!! As a broke college student this will be the first dish I'll be making over the weekend. :)
also, carrots are usually diced when used in fried rice, it is easier to mix in that way.
Egg-chicken fried rice is what I once cooked for a classmate during my undergrad days (I used much the same recipe, minus the sesame oil and plus some MSG) to prove to him that I could cook. He said he didn't think I could. Thanks for bringing back those memories. :-)
That is definitely my comfort food. I'll be trying this recipe later today as I have quite a few of those ingredients. Thank you Donal :)
yay hope you liked it!
Donal, i have recently found your channel and i find your cooking close to heart and home cooking that reminds me of my mom! Keep posting great food that will allow us to explore in our boundaries and our taste buds as well (:
XxCherryBisousxX oh thank you!
you're so talented, you make it seem easy to do while it's not... in Love with this recipe already, i cant wait to do it this weekend.
I usually fry my rice separately to brown it a little then I crack an egg in the rice, it gives the rice more flavour and a nicer mouth feel. After that I add in the cooked vegetables. I also add fish sauce to my fried rice.

When I make fried rice, I mix egg and soy sauce together, then I add it by the end of the cooking process. It's really good!
Fried rice is one of my fallback easy meals. I love it with broccoli and mushrooms. I always have a big pot of cooked brown rice in my fridge.
Karen Leabo oh yum!
I don't eat meat but this also (of course) works really well with tofu! But sometimes I skip that and just bulk it up more with a ton of kale haha. Mangetout and a LOAD of chilli are also must haves for me but I do love how easy and adaptable this recipe is :)
Funny to see how vibrant this is at the end, considering that you used leftovers...
***** I know right :)
well i like fried rice with pickled cabbage or kimchi (basically every pickled goodness works) and i also scramble my eggs with the rice nice and hot in the pan (similar to that mac n cheese method)

anw nice job (as always) w the video Donal =))
I am Chinese and this is quite authentic fried rice. Good job Donal! Just one thing: we don't actually add peppers in the fried rice lol.
It's 1.32 am here and I'm watching this! It looks so gooooooood!

Hey Donal! Great recipe as always! Continue with the great work and hope to see more new recipes emerge from your amazing palette

tavana sibgatullah so glad u like it :)
:)
They look beautiful but add an extra punch to it too!! hope this helps :)
nicoleh1010 oh yum!
Sitting here eating breakfast and now I want fried rice. This looks divine!

It's absolutely freezing outside, I'm not feeling well and this is the first thing I've had appetite for that isn't toast all day. No, seriously, that and some white miso soup would be SO GOOD right about now.
Grace Sophia hope you're feeling better!
So delicious - one of my favourite quick meals!
I'm Chinese and I approve! Although one thing I would say is only add the sesame oil in after you've taken the wok off the heat xx
Oh nice tip! So glad you approve! :)
Donal Skehan
It's more fragrant that way :) keep the good recipes coming! x
try adding the egg last.. make a hole in the middle of the rice.. than add little bit of oil and add the egg.. quickly stir.. it will be epic.. and if you like a little bit extra aroma try using duck egg
yes! I made it today, it was so good.:-) look forward to your videos every week!
Which one I'd like more I guess. xD
kenny sei Hope you like it!
It seems to be very delicious....will absolutely try it out
Wow, looks so good! Is there a substitute for sesame oil for this dish?
This looks yummy!
Thank you, I can't wait to try it!
its a very easy yet lovely recipe. i usually make it this way minus the ham offcourse. but i must say it was a beautiful way of cutting the carrots though. can u tell me how did u do it?
Hello Donal, so I thought about it for a bit, and - if the option is still available - I would like to suggest more tasty soups and, most importantly, more cooking with mum!
Bartosz Lenarczyk HAHA will do
This really looks awesome & I make a lot of Asian food & im really excited about trying your recipe, have you done lo mein & Chicken & Broccoli or beef and broccoli doesn’t matter shrimp shrimp and broccoli but I would love to see your take on something like that and especially the lo mein
Fried rice is a magic dish! For Asian recipes, it'd be cool to see Japanese food. :)
Super yummy Donal thanks for sharing! Kate :)
InTheKitchenWithKate thanks a mill Kate!
This isn't how we Hong Kong people make fried rice tho but yours looks amazing too xdd
Actually separating the egg white and yolk for this dish is better, which by adding the rice when the egg yolk just add into the wok, the egg yolk will coat on to each piece of rice and make them golden and not sticking tgt ^^ Then add the egg white or another egg after frying can have the pieces of egg in the dish.
This looks so good Donal. If your viewers want student friendly meals I suggest you show them how to make japanese yakiudon. Its cheap, delicious, and easy. (Although no one makes it as well as my mother in law lol)
GlasgowCelticFan25 oh worth a try :)
I want to make egg foo young and the brown gravy that goes with it.
Donal you should do a whole series of quick and easy dishes like this one!
Naosuke Yamaguchi good idea!
Fried Rice is so delish :) I was wondering do you have any good asian recipes for gamey meat like moose? I have a freezer full of moose meat and I would like to try to make something different from it
