This was not a "loveless marriage" it was an abusive relationship where the woman was treated like a slave and isolated from her family. It is horrific that her suicide attempt was so destructive and the fact that she murdered her innocent children is so tragic.
I discovered this channel fairly recently, and though it's nearly 2 years old, I want to comment on this video. I knew a Turkish family who immigrated to my area just prior to the time of these events. They lived much as they had in Bulgaria. I saw the wife being mistreated by her young sons with encouragement from the boorish, demanding father. The wife explained traditional family life to me. The way Elina, the woman in the story, was treated was not unusual.
Holy shit! That really escalated quickly. Very interesting story, again. Also, just thought I should mention, I LOVE that sound effect when you make a transition in the story 👏
The unfortunate Medea model of going about things. So sad. I remember when the Wall came down...my best friend was in Germany at the time & she brought me a chunk. :) Great work, again! 👍 I'd never heard of this case.
Gosh, this bring back some memories. I was a kid when Soviet Union dissolved. Crazy times. The Soviets had a similar policy after the WWII in regards to females not being executed. Only three women were put to death during that era. A Nazi war criminal nicknamed "Tonia the Machine Gunner", a school cafeteria cook from what is now Ukraine who poisoned scores of schoolchildren and her own brother in law (because he watched too much football). I can't remember her name. The third case was a political one. In the 80s a lady in charge of supplying several state owned cafes and restaurants named Bella Brodsky was charged with embezzlement. She obviously threatened to name names of those even higher, so she was promptly executed.

Great work BC I can’t believe she would kill her children and then think... “actually I don’t want to die anymore” that’s vile! I thought when the Video started she was going to Kill her husband or something 🙉
I think when there is a fire too near you, it's almost a biological imperative that you get away. Kind of like how you can only hold your breath so long before your body forces you to breathe. So even though she intended to kill herself, that primal desire to live forced her to flee. Too bad she didn't give her children that same choice. 🙁

We don't hear anything in North America from that part of the world. Thank you for the background information relating to this case. Didn't know about these political events back in the late 80s.
Elina's husband was a bloody swine . He drove her to losing her mind and killing her children . His heartlessness can be seen by the manner in which he replaced Elina with his keep . I hope he never has peace or success or happiness in this lifetime .
I find it ironic that people feel sorry for her, and other women abused; yet, men that are abused emotionally/verbally for years and years are called "weak" and to "grow a pair" when they finally snap. Take that Christopher Watts case. VERY FEW people acknowledge the abuse he suffered from his wife. It is universally accepted that it is NEVER short of horrific if children are killed, regardless which parent kills them. I feel sorry for ANY person that is silently being abused by their partner. My sympathy IMMEDIATELY ends the minute they hurt their babies!!! :-(
One thing I like about many of these videos is the informative historical background. While I was naturally aware of the general goings-on in the Communist bloc at the time, I didn’t know for instance about the plight of Turks in Bulgaria, or the “Great Excursion,” acts of oppression for which Todor Zhivkov was the Bulgarian leader responsible. I do however recall with satisfaction the machine-gunning of the murderous Ceausescus, ex-dictators of neighboring Romania. Perhaps Zhivkov’s sins were not as great--against his own ethnic Bulgarians at least--which is why he and other leaders escaped such an ignominious fate. Elina Zlatanova’s crime was brutal, but people raised in poverty under brutal governments are more prone to respond with brutality themselves, however irrational. Hers was essentially an act of despair, of nihilism. She saw her world as hopeless, so her response was to destroy as much of it as she could. Eastern Europe and Russia are still not such great places to live compared with the U.S. and Western Europe, and still inclined to authoritarianism, but thank God they’re better now that Communist scum has been driven out of power. Anyway thanks for yet another interesting video.
That was horrific. I don't understand how she could kill her children, especially a four year old who would have been totally aware. I hope she repented before her execution. Thank you for another detailed, disturbing true story.
That's sad. Awful life. Horrible husband!! She killed her children to get back at her husband and burn there home and destroy all memory of there life together. Very sad! especially when children are involved
You say "for some reason" twice; at ~5:35 she escaped cause burning alive is excruciating, at ~8:10 she wasn't commuted cause her crimes deserved death. Pretty obvious reasons. Love the channel, great content 👍
Truly sad, not even a photo to refer her to.. Bulgaria in the 1980s must have been truly depressing, with next to no options for a 30-something Turkish woman with two kids and a slob for a husband - the country only really opened up in the last decade, after years of Communist rule, and were accepted into the EU.. going by the football match I saw a few days ago the mentality of quite a few of their countrymen is still in the Stone Age. So in short, Elina was obviously in a desperate place mentally and this manifested horribly.
darganx this is one of the saddest so far. I truly believe she was driven mad by being worked to death, no freedom - husband won’t take her out but she’s forbidden to go out alone so a virtual prisoner living a slave like existence. Two very young children to care for and for all we know suffering from post natal depression perhaps due to her intolerable circumstances. Perhaps she also knew her pig of a husband was having an affair and all this combined to break her. Heartbreaking to think her toddler died in agony conscious of his own mother killing him. Was really hard to hear this one. Horrible to know her husband had a absolutely no blame pointed at him and goes on to live and enjoy life.
How can you kill your own kids? Temporary insanity? Some part of her brain was malfunctioning and lack of emotional support from her husband sent her over the edge. The husband had a mistress so she was ignored. Despair must have set in. So sad for her babies. 🥲
No one gets to decide who live and who doesn't. Children would have been better human being because of their father. They should have got the chance. It was an act of chronic depression. She lost hope for her children.
Her husband must be punished to be the cause of this incidence. He emotionally manipulated her to do such thing with her kids n herself. He is the real culprit and was living happily. Shameless, ruthless creature he was.
All people with Muslim names, we're forced to accept Christian names. The other nonsense there was tax called Single tax. Means that if u r not married and have no children u pay tax for that.😂
@@diarradunlap9337 I totally agree Diarra. Not that she gets a pass on letting her baby die in the crib, but to stab your 4 year old after leaving your baby to die from smoke inhalation, that to me is intent. She deserved the punishment. She probably set the fire to the apartment and committed murder to get back at her husband. Maybe she was on to him cheating on her? She admitted what she did. Revenge perhaps? The poor kids...RIP
I wish she would have at least gone after the awful cheating husband if she felt her life was a living hell. I understand that she probably intended it to be an extended suicide, but I hate when people redirect their anger at innocent people.
My husband is Slavic ( Croatian), Tomislav, tata is Zlatko, mom Mira, brother vijenslav , Teta Zdenka [spelling might be off because hes not here to spell check].
Her husband said she couldn't leave the apartment so she should have stayed. I think she wanted to but fire pain can change your mind pretty quickly. I think she was better off executed. Her husband probably would have ended up bearing her anyway. Bulgaria was mess. I had no idea. I didn't have the internet back then. 😊
I have never heard of this story, but the name thing was real and touched almost every household right till the very end. It is crazy my real name is also an aftermath of this name policy in the country. Just born shortly before the end of communist BG state my parents had to choose in a list of very slavic names. What I never understood is how this woman didn’t make use of her rights by this time. Kardjali was not the final decision maker. Sofia usually was and still by this day is. Divorce was an option more even back in those times, in wich the state took care.
Gosh this is so awful and tragic . I can't help but feel the husband should have been prosecuted also for the mental abuse. If he hadn't have done that she wouldn't have been so mental damaged
This was not a "loveless marriage" it was an abusive relationship where the woman was treated like a slave and isolated from her family. It is horrific that her suicide attempt was so destructive and the fact that she murdered her innocent children is so tragic.

I don’t feel at all bad for her. Plenty of crazy people protect their children.
Changing 310,000 names to get added control? How ridiculous!
No one gets to decide who live and who doesn't. Children would have been better human being because of their father. They should have got the chance. It was an act of chronic depression. She lost hope for her children.
Sad.
Not to disrespect the seriousness of this case, but I'm not sure that life in a Bulgarian prison is much better than death...
What she went through was terrible but to take out on those innocent kids instead of her husband???!!! I can't wrap my head around it 🥺🥺
Called the Medea syndrome.
Her husband must be punished to be the cause of this incidence. He emotionally manipulated her to do such thing with her kids n herself. He is the real culprit and was living happily. Shameless, ruthless creature he was.
Sad story. But i hope d husband learn a valuable lesson with his treatment of his new wife.
That name change law in Bulgaria is news to me! Wow.
All people with Muslim names, we're forced to accept Christian names.
The other nonsense there was tax called Single tax. Means that if u r not married and have no children u pay tax for that.😂
The husband MOVED BACK TO THE APARTMENT WITH HIS MISTRESS??!! damn..
Heartbreaking to think I'd that little boy trying to escape and her stopping and stabbing him 😔
Yes. At that point, she EARNED her execution.

I totally agree Diarra.
She had learned helplessness!! Very sad case
So heartbreaking. That guy was a scumbag who should never find peace.
I wish she would have at least gone after the awful cheating husband if she felt her life was a living hell. I understand that she probably intended it to be an extended suicide, but I hate when people redirect their anger at innocent people.
Have you read about the cases of Elizabeth Brownrigg and Lavinia Fisher?
My husband is Slavic ( Croatian), Tomislav, tata is Zlatko, mom Mira, brother vijenslav , Teta Zdenka [spelling might be off because hes not here to spell check].
I was in Eastern Europe in the late 80's lol
This one I had little to no reca
😔🙏⚘

Wait... "officially, we don't execute people. Also, she's the last person we ever executed"??
