Still making those delicious scones from your instructions. I've shared them with my co-workers and they love them. I don't even like the people I work with so it's a real sacrifice. lol
Hello kind sir and thank you from the US. I priced this out for my local grocery in New England and the cost is 75 cents a slice - very affordable considering the cost of going to the bakery. Prices are out of control on both sides of the Atlantic and I pray for relief for all of us.
BTW, yes, baking at home is much cheaper. At the only gluten-free bakery in town I paid $8.50 for a slice of cinnamon crumb cake. Yes, one piece. It was my birthday. I find a comparable recipe and a whole cake, 9 pieces, will cost much less even though still much more expensive than wheat flour.
@@BakingOnABudgetalways better baking at home ❤ better for health when we control all ingredients so we don’t add preservatives for longer shelf life’s and we get good real food. The way our grandparents have made for generations. Thank you for sharing real wholesome recipes with us for us to make for our young families at home ❤ God bless you Sir. ❤ 🙏
I have LOVED egg custard tart all my life! I often used to make them when my kids were young. If I didn’t have time/energy to make pastry, I’d just bake the egg custard in a dish . To me, the most important ingredient is freshly grated nutmeg on top. YUM! Nobody makes things like this at home any more, thanks for showing everyone how to do it Dave. The only difference is, I always used whole eggs as we were too poor to use that many yolks. I also couldn’t afford cream so just used milk. They always came out delicious!
As always a really well presented video. No fuss or bother, no fancy gadgets. Am so glad I came across your channel. looking forward to next one. stay safe and thank you. Anne x
Thank you so much! My parents are English and your recipes take me back to my childhood with the foods my mum used to make. ❤ I do have one hint to save a tiny bit of money each time, if I may be so bold: I use a spatula to scrape out bowls and measuring jugs and saucepans to make sure that very little is wasted. I saw the jug of double cream and thought, "But we could still get the remnants out of it with just a little scrape!" 🤣
You're an amazing person and very much appreciated. I understand that you're doing so very much on these videos. It's not easy. ❤ I sent the link to my older sisters and now we're craving proper homemade custard tarts. 😂
I love this channel too. You are a natural presenter Dave. Your enthusiasm is infectious and you make it sound so easy it motivates me to try the recipes. Thank you!
I love this pie....my mum in law would make this for Sunday dinner. She was from England and immigrated to Canada in the fifties. I still have her recipe. Thank you ❤
Really great series of affordable cooking episodes. Counting the cost of the whole egg while using the yolk and saving the whites is part of the real world charm of this channel. No accounting tricks here LoL
I miss these from my time in the UK and Europe. I've made them from time to time, but my wife isn't a fan, and my kids are greedy pigs. One day I shall have my tart again...
Thank you so much for sharing 🎉 we have something similar in South Africa 🇿🇦 called "Melk Tert" or "Milk Tart" we sometimes make a crust from cookies and butter or a spread based pastry. We have variations of baking the custard and even just cooking the custard filling on the stove top and chilling it once cooled down. I am sure, just like our your lovely tart, it is better the next day.
Your recipe mirrors my Mothers which was her Mothers. I have been eating my mother's silky custard pie for 70 years. Through the years I have ONLY changed her imitation vanilla for my own homemade vanilla and her ground nutmeg for a fresh grated amount!! Yes, this may be a budget dessert, but I can't imagine anything better! Thank you sir!
4:30 am New Zealand time, it's freezing outside because it's winter here and I'm sitting up in my lounge learning how to bake a custard flan😅 great custard 👍
@@shirleymckinnon6352 yeah $15+ a dozen now, for Woolworths mixed dozen in Alexandra central Otago, which is probably the priciest place in New Zealand to buy any groceries as it is. occasionally Woolworths or countdown has a special because they get overstuffed with eggs because most people aren't prepared to take out a bank loan for a dozen eggs😂 so you can pick up a dozen eggs for about $8 when that happens and they sell out pretty quick.
@@Jos-scifiwriter Wow, that is very high, around $5 here but now there is a shortage because there is a bird flu scare. Good luck with your custard pie, I am going to make his ginger cake. PS, still use one of my Edmonds cook book, brought one of them over here 29 years ago.

I don't know about the UK but in the States eggs can cost $9 one dozen‼️‼️ Brown eggs are more - absolutely ridiculous. So 6 eggs is a bit much for us. But - if you want custard you need eggs and custard is delicious!!!! Nonetheless, this is delicious and can't wait to try it. Why are eggs that expensive in the US? I pay £2.50 for a dozen free range eggs that are laid that day. Even in supermarkets I think they're about £2.80 a dozen. I wouldn't buy anything but free range eggs, the conditions the poor caged hens are in is deplorable.
Thanks....many of these recipes I got from my Grandmother and Great Aunt who used to bake in each others kitchens every Wednesday....good old school cooking and baking and always delicious....hope you try the recipe.
Seriously?? Still?? I know the prices went completely beserk during COVID, $20 a dozen, but thought everything had calmed down about a year ago. Have you ever thought about keeping your own hens, that must surely be cheaper??
Lizzie the colour of the eggshell doesn't indicate the quality of the egg. My white hen lays white eggs, the brown hens lay brown eggs and the black ones lay.....brown eggs. 😂 And egg yolk depends on the food the hens get. Freshness would be the thing to be concerned about. Have a great day, it looks like it will be here in my patch of Australia.

We grew up with custard pie, but our family recipe is different in the sense we don't cook anything stove top, it's all done in the oven and we use evaporated milk and not heavy cream. Your crust looks better. We just use a standard pie crust. Yours looks amazing.
Thanks a lot....yes the crust was real good...it's an old sweet shortcrust recipe and works great with the custard tart.
@@BakingOnABudget Is it a good crust to use for butter tarts? Do you make the Canadian style butter tarts in the UK?
