    If you are baking on a budget do give this sausage roll recipe a try.
    Ingredients.
    300g / 10.5oz Plain flour 0.15p
    75g / 2.6oz Unsalted butter 0.56p
    75g 2.6oz Lard 0.15p
    75ml Cold Water 0.00
    A pinch of salt 0.00
    1 egg 0.13p
    8 Sausages 2.25p

    Each sausage roll 0.54p
    The pastry.
    Rub the butter and lard roughly into the flour along with a pinch of salt.
    Add the water a little at a time until the pastry comes together.
    Let it chill in the fridge for 30 mins.
    The filling.
    skin the sausage, mash together and then divide the meat into 6 equal parts and roll into sausages about 12cm long.
    Take the pastry out of the fridge and divide in two for easier handling.
    Roll each piece out to about 12cm wide and 36cm long.
    Divide into 3 so you have 6 pieces of the pastry at 12 x 12cm.
    Put the sausage into the pastry and fold over and seal and cut vent holes.
    Bake in an oven at 190c / 374f / Gas mark 5 for 25mins.

    54 pence! boggles my mind I've paid around $8 USD (£6.3) for a single sausage roll near me in Phoenix, Arizona. I will HAVE to try this recipe. Keep em coming, Love your layout and explanations.

      Unfortunately, you do pay for convenience and so do we in new Zealand, sausage rolls are a traditional favorite around here but you pay through the nose for them. a lot of people are stunned how blasted easy sausage rolls and pies are too make once they get taught by someone who makes the recipes simple and that is the great gift of this channel. Baking really is simple but it takes a master of the craft to teach that lesson well. Happy baking and best wishes from southern New Zealand 👋🥰👍

    The thing I like about your recipes - it's that I usually have most of the ingredients already. Unlike some other channels, when I have to go out and buy obscure ingredients that I'll probably never need to use again. These look delicious. I've got a pack of sausages in the fridge and all of the other ingredients too - my family love sausage rolls. I love the way you make these. I've always rolled them up - but I prefer your way! Thank you x

    My husband and I have just made some of these-we loved them! He had the idea of making the sausage filling go further by adding porridge oats, I suppose like a stuffing. We had one each for our dinner, with potatoes and vegetables, which made a really nice change for us. Thank you!

    I'm 30 years old and cook often but never really baked because my kitchen is very small + I always assumed you need all sorts of electric mixing equipment, space and ingredients I never really have. I assumed making pastry was hard, and was reluctant to spend money on the premade stuff. Your videos have made me realise how easy it actually is and got me into baking regularly. I made these mostly so I would stop spending money at greggs for my breakfast haha. Not only have I saved a bit of money, but these sausage rolls are so delicious + keep me going all morning. @@BakingOnABudget So, I looked for a recipe and found this:
      The sausage was originally introduced
      with the influx of German slate miners to the area in the 16th Century. However soon the original recipe was changed to use more locally available herbs and spices, especially:
      White pepper
      • Black pepper
      • Thyme
      • Sage
      • Nutmeg
      • Mace
      • Cayenne
      Recipes have been passed down through the generations and reflect the influx of exotic spices to the port of Whitehaven
      in the 18th Century when the town prospered as the third largest port in the
      UK from trade between the Americas and Africa. During that time, the area
      now known as Cumbria was introduced to black pepper, ginger and
      nutmeg as well as other foodstuffs such as molasses and rum.
      Consequently, many Cumbrian regional specialities today are spiced or
      sugar-based, such as the sausage and the famous Grasmere gingerbread
      and Kendal mint cake.
      Historically, the Traditional Cumberland Sausage was more highly
      seasoned than it is today, but even today is more highly seasoned than
      other British sausages.

    • @BakingOnABudget
      @BakingOnABudget  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@regig.9493 That makes sense, as new ingredients are introduced to an area they will find their way into local dishes, I think it would be worth a try making cumberland sausage with those spices and herbs and I bet they would be spot on.

    Love your recipes, Mate. I learned from my Ma a different way - you made a very long sausage and long rectangular short crust or puff pastry case; spread mustard on the pastry; put the long rolled sausage meat on top of the pastry; rolled it up with the seam on the top; joined it with egg wash; crimped it; chop into lengths you like; used scissors to allow venting; egg wash; and bake. Six of one and half a dozen of the other - either way you get a cracking sossa. Maybe a regional thing? We are from the East Midlands.

      Myself, i would add salt & pepper to taste. As for herbs then sage usually goes well with sausage. I would suggest looking at what sausages your local supermarket sells and check the ingredients. Armed with that information add herbs to your liking.

    • @BakingOnABudget

    • @GenialHarryGrout
      @GenialHarryGrout 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I saw that and thought the same thing but by mixing the meat together then splitting into 6 he was probably showing those who use sausage meat instead of sausages. That is the only explanation i can come up with, With sausage meat you may have to add seasoning and herbs where as sausages may already have these, depending on the type of sausages you use.

    • @BakingOnABudget
      @BakingOnABudget  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BakingOnABudget oh I see, in that case though maybe next time you could cut two of them into thirds and add them on to the ends, and you could put them on the pastry diagonally if they’re too long, would make for an easier clean up I feel (I hope I don’t sound too critical, just thought to make a suggestion to make things simpler)

    I add a small amount of sage and onion stuffing to the sausages, about 50g of mix made up with water.
    It helps to prevent the sausage meat from going too firm. It also adds a good amount of flavour.
