- After struggling for 20 minutes to get the stand BACK ON, I finally worked it out and figured I should fire off a quick how-to video in hopes that it helps the next guy/girl. Sorry that the video gets shaky but I needed to put the camera on the monitor so you could see up close.

When I first tried (before watching this video) I read the installation instructions only to find these’s no mention of the reverse procedure. So I thought, what the hell I’ll just give it a try. Then that cold sinking feeling of like, OMG what have I done? Found your video and after a few attempts, I was back in business! Thank you so much man. Real huge help 👍
Excellent video, and great explanation! I'm a licensed electronics tech with 35 years experience, and I could not have found that latch to release the base without this information.
..Well being an electronic tech isn't exactly the same as disabling and re attaching a mount then is is.....LoL.

A thousand thanks. Takes 5 seconds with your help, would have been stuffed without it. I went "shopping" in my garage and found a blister pack of some hardware that was pre-formed with a 90-degree bend. Carved it up to resemble yours, depressed the base as you show, inserted my card, lifted the base and POP, good to go. Thanks again.

Life saver mate. Managed it with a thicker paper card. Trick is indeed the bend and the simultaneous action to place the stand back.

The curved card is genius. Was moments away from trashing my monitor out of frustration when I found your instructions.
Fast forward four years, and I found this very helpful. Took my Thunderbolt off of a wall mount and couldn't for the life of me remember how it went back on.
Thank you for being sane, The first video I watched had a guy pacing the screen side of his iMac face down on a marble bathroom vanity. I quickly hit stop. The second video consisted of a guy using a hacksaw to cut off his iMac stand. I screamed. I was a bit nervous opening your video.

Worked like a charm! Removed my Thunderbolt monitor from its stand and leaned it against the stand so it’s lower on the desk. Now, I don’t have to stare upward at it all day. Bravo!
This is a really good post. Thank you for the trick to place back again the screen into the mount. Just for anyone in an office you can simply use a take out container lid. I just used an exacto knife to cut into a credit card shape, bent it and it was back into place instantly. Thanks again.
I'd like to add my thanks to all the others. Even in 2020 this is still useful. A friend gave me a 2010 27 inch iMac that I've decided to mount on the wall above my piano keyboard as a dedicated screen/computer to learn how to play. I managed to get the VESA mount installed, but would never have figured out on my own how to get it to pull back into the mac and function properly. The instructions that came with the VESA mount didn't show anything like this, I wasted an hour searching all over the internet until I found yours. Again, many thanks.

Amazing!! No way to find that without your clear explanation. Used the card that was delivered with the Apple VESA mount kit and just bended it according to your instructions - worked perfect - thanks again!

Super helpful! Fortunately I had a very similar piece of plastic. Took me about 5 min of trying and rewatching yours, then it just clicked!
I still had to futz with it for several minutes, but the latch eventually released. Thanks for the guidance!

Still relevant after 5 years. Was struggling to fit stand back to 27 inch Apple Thunderbolt display after it had been mounted on a Vesa. Your video was just the hint I needed and found that an expired laminated Japanese driving license with bent edge was just the right thickness and strength. Apple could provide much better instructions about this.

My Mac display was on a vesa mount for nearly 8 years and the spring was very very stubborn even with the card but this video worked! and now the monitor will help out a teacher I’m donating it to who needs a good monitor for remote teaching her students with Zoom during Covid. Thank you.
What a fantastic video! I had exactly the same problem and this video, together with the excellent commentary, enabled me to solve this problem within a few minutes. The "useless piece of plastic" I used was something I cut out of a plastic punnet that had contained strawberries, folded double for strength but I also exploited the lip of the punnet to get my 45˚ bend on the end! Thanks for troubling to make this video!!

Thanks for the great video. I still had the original 'access' card and did not even need to put a bend in it. It just needed to be stiff enough to release the latch and viola! Everything is back to normal.
Thanks. Worked almost immediately to get the mount back on. (The most difficult part was locating a vendor who had the right screws to replace the original ones that had been lost. Apple changed the types of screws during the production run! ...ugh!..

Super helpful! I found that a flat card worked fine too reinstall the stand. I just had to try and reach upwards with it.

This was very helpful. I was still able to hit the switch with a gift card to return the stand in normal position. It was just a matter of seeing what you’re talking about and pushing the switch.

Taken that stand off would absolutely make it easier to transport my iMac to a different country when I move using a suitcase. I just need to make sure the screen doesn’t bounce around inside suitcase. Thanks for this video

Thanks! I was able to get the stand back on a Thunderbolt display that's been VESA mounted for most of a decade, at least. I used the card with the mount kit and got it on the 2nd try. The key was to push the stand down while pushing the card in to unlock it.
And a year later it worked just as easy. Took about 5 seconds!
It works just fine with a credit card. The trick is to push it at an angle toward the top of the monitor, not perpendicular to the back of it. Pushing it as I described does exactly what your folded tool does. The lock is perpendicular to the inside of the monitor case, so you have to push it from the side so it pivots out of the way of the foot and snaps back after you press the foot in.
Confirmed! Slide the card in an upward direction, rather than inserting like an ATM machine.
@@MrCazzie14 exactly. As the lock is perpendicular to the inside of the monitor case, pressing the card like in an ATM machine simply puts the card paralell with the lock. But you want to touch and press the lock.

Thank you infinitely! I bought a Digitus DA90356 adapter for a Thunderbolt monitor, and the instructions provided tell only how to unblock and uncover the 8 screws, but NOT how to put the adapter back in. I continued to try without knowing you had to push it down more!

Thanks to this video I could put the stand back into my Cinema Display. You can use even a normal "credit card", just push a little bit up, not straight. You will feel that you are pushing something with a spring. In that moment you can insert the stand back.

I had a 27" iMac that was stuck in the closed position. I thought the hinge mount was broken. I tried your trick and it worked. The 90 degree angle is the key. I tried several flat tools, cards, etc, and nothing worked until this! I cut a piece of plastic from a retail blister pack that was really thick and worked perfectly.
Honestly I was struggling doing this for the first time didn't know what I was really feeling for. The reason for the thinner card is to reduce binding so you can feel the mechanism. I ended up using one of those thin metal disassembly tools. It hits the internal lever about 1/4inch in then you will feel the spring resistance another 1/2inch in and the lock is released. Obviously you cannot jam Metallic objects into the back of a computer so if you don't hit the latch after 1/4inch back it out and try again going on the upper edge aiming for the apple logo.

Thank you thank you thank you...twice actually. I needed to reinstall the stand and I thought I remembered the steps, up until the inserting the card again. I thought that was only needed to remove the stand. Saved me a lot of headaches.

Yes used your video last year to remove the mount and wham the data cable failed I just use it again to put it back on to return to work.

Well Done! Had been looking around on the net for teardown instructions as the mac I just received was tilted all wrong. This is the only video I'd found that handles this issue.

I used a the hard but flexible piece of plastic I cut from a modded padlock packaging which I had not opened yet and it worked instantly using the 45 degree bend you recommended. Good instruction shucker27. It worked very easily and quickly for me. I couldn't find thin, rigid plastic, so instead of plastic I used a thin piece of aluminum. This aluminum was originally the disposable stand that comes with mosquito repellent coils, such as PIC or KING brand. It worked like a charm! Thank you for the demonstration!
