Two answers to your questions. One the soldier was the gas mask is part of an anti riot unit. Maybe he has tear gas or something. Second the purpose of the system might be to deploy a nuke in atmosphere, to create an effective anti bomber zone. The us had a plan to detonate a nuke in event of the bombing raid historically, why not in fallout.

I don't know if this has been answered yet, but with a bunch of research I've found the name of the SCUD launcher. It's the 2P19, based on the chassis of a IS-2 Tank. I was searching image after image until I found a specific link where the person posting the image also had an in depth description earlier provided to them by the museum they visited, the Military Museum and Technology Park at Kecel, Hungary.

It's these blink and you miss them vehicles and other background details that I find the most fascinating, because they let you write the story yourself to such a large degree. While you make a good case against this being a SAM system, I prefer that explanation as it gives me license to imagine off screen radar and command vehicles. The missile design does scream SRBM at you though, can't deny that. Also, I love the surprise appearance of a Zaku!

    A few notes:
The hull mounted gun is unusual but a self defense weapon on the chassis is not unheard of.
The vehicle COULD be part of a SAM system with the targeting and firing radar being on separate vehicles that network together as a complete system. The missile could also just be really, really shit at being a SAM. It's also possible that the launcher can be used against multiple target types with the payload in the intro being a payload intended for ground targets.
Given it's deployment in rural Canada and up in Alaska, the tracked system would allow it to operate relatively well in areas that lack significant/robust infrastructure.

Based on where the tanks are located, I'm fairly certain they're for binary rocket fuel/oxidizers for the missiles. Some fuels for rockets can be extremely efficient but also extremely corrisive when mixed. By keeping them separate until you're ready to fire, you can cheap out on the fuel tanks for your already throw away missiles. It also explains the small size of the tanks, you want to make it so that you only need a short time of pumping to firing. This both minimizes the time the corrosion can happen and how long you take from mission go to final launch. In this scenario I'm assuming the hydraulics are there for basic errection to "firing position" versus flat for speed and ease of transport. The slow walking level speed of the vehicle in obstensibly the backlines of the Chinese theater while seemingly primed to fire could be explained by this (though the infantry escort could equally explain it) or possibly some combination. If you have to move at walking speed, might as well be ready to go while you're at it.

Great video, I love the look of this vehicle because it really does look like a real, workable vehicle. Your single launcher version reminds me of the US moving from the M270 MLRS, to the HIMARS as well, so it's honestly not too far from reality to have a single launcher variant. Also, those cylinders are probably either hydraulic or compressed air storage. Pnuematic tools are VERY useful in the field, and homeslice is wearing the gas mask cause he's allergic to the maple syrup ubiquitous to newly annexed Canada 😂
Regarding role? I think these missiles probably fill the same role as a Pershing missile
Btw, I think that tracked Scud-A TEL vehicle is a 9P19 TEL.

"random equipment latched to the front". Those are spare pieces of track, very common in armored vehicles because you have to carry spares and they provide extra protection.
Also those external tanks could very well be for fuel, I feel like they took inspiration from T-34 and other soviet tanks.....I don't think they were actually connected to the internal tank and instead are used for field refuelings and at least the bigger ones would be emptied/removed before entering combat if I remember correctly.

I think it might be an anti air system but tipped with nuclear missiles to prevent/destroy large bomber formations. The gun could be a hold over from WW2/Korea, when anti air systems like the quad .50s had to engage ground targets in defensive engagements. I know the nuclear anti air missile was at least considered in the early 1950s. Just a thought

The bumper Is highly likely a heavy counterweight system. There are forklift and other lifting systems have had removable counterweights to help the vehicle center of gravity from going too far forward and cause a roll over. For this example the vehicle would require heavy forward weight to counter the weight of the missiles themselves from causing the rear of the vehicle to drag on the ground or collapse the rear suspension system fully which would cause damage or blow them out entirely. that also would explain the design of them so they could easily lifted by either a heavy hydraulic robot arm or forklift. but hey I been wrong before

This much content from 6 seconds of screen time is the kind of pure quality I look for in my lore videos. I would say about the missile carrier that it could easily preform all 3 roles you described, depending on the missiles it is loaded with. For the SAM missiles we know that some similarly ‘smart’ rockets do exist in that kind of profile, with the similarly simple/retro REPCONN rocket design being able to chart and adjust a course without visible thrusters, and for the ballistic missile context I agree it could be a pocket ICBM, alternatively it could be a SRBM (Short Range Ballistic Missile). I think it’s very likely the vehicle was designed for Tactical Artillery, as you say is most likely, and ended up being the platform for new experimental SAM & Ballistic Missiles. This also leads to the question of why they’re seen going down a suburban street in the intro - and then why one of the soldiers is wearing a gas mask, and I’d say the answer is likely that they could be either preparing for nuclear war, which means they’re positioning to attack and/or defend depending on their missiles, possibly they reposition in order to avoid being bombed by the enemy, or they’re positioning for unrest on the home front, which would mean the missiles are probably tactical artillery, non-nuclear, possibly even adapted to distribute riot control gas. It’s also possible they’re pre-positioning for a land invasion of the US mainland by the enemy (or I suppose this shot could even be in like Hawaii or the Philippines), or they’re SAM or Nuclear for the purposes of more major unrest on the home front like a Brotherhood of Steel -style mass mutiny or major secessionist threat such as in Fallout 76. As for the Gas Mask Soldier:
-If the missile carrier is launching its payload anytime soon, he might not want to inhale the exhaust of the missile, and has just gotten a head start on putting his gas mask on (perhaps his job when they’re launching the missiles means he doesn’t have much time to put the gas mask on while they’re getting it ready)
-If they’re going to put down something like a riot he might be expecting something like tear gas or smoke to fill the air as soon as the wind shifts.
-If there’s major civil unrest where he is, he may be afraid of some sort of ambush with gas or fire weaponry, this could even happen in a seemingly peaceful area.
-If he’s a local he might want to hide his face while he’s with the military after all the massacres that have been reported.
-He could have reason to expect that the Great Ka-Boom is coming soon, or simply be paranoid.
-He may be trying to (or being ordered to) get used to wearing it in case he has to live the second half of his life in an irradiated wasteland. Or even to prepare for just a few hours of wearing it in battle.
-He could, I suppose, have a scar or something? Fallout does have a very 1950s culture so I could actually imagine hiding your face if, say, the military won’t let you grow facial hair over it.
-He could be not up to standard with how he looks (dishelved, unshaven, wounded, etc) and be hiding that from the officer in command or from the populous (maybe he has too much facial hair to wear a gas mask properly so they’re making him wear one uncomfortably to teach him a point).
-Anyways I have other things to be doing.

Hey man a small detail you missed that actually makes the M270 closer to the Minuteman then you thought. If the M270 Is loaded with ATACMS, it actually only has 2 Long Range Missiles - the ATACMS boxes are just designed so they visually look the same as GMLRS boxes which hold 6 missiles each.

The reason why it doesn't look like its based off the tank would (game world wise) be because you don't put heavy tank armour on a light "behind the frontline" vehicle like a mobile missile launcher. Most modular vehicle systems are typically based on like vehicles like APCs, and can be up or de-armoured to suit the needs of the user (think M113 or CV90, lots of variants, not much armour for most). The reason why that's important is because of fuel consumption between the vehicles. Most of the fuel will be going to the heavily armoured frontline service vehicles like IFVs and MBTs, and the reason they need so much fuel is because of that armour, which makes them heavy and thus fuel hungry. So its better that vehicles that stay behind the lines (ambulances, mobile artillery, and this here missile launcher) be as unarmoured and unrelated to a tank as possible. The only real variants of tanks tend to be armoured recovery vehicles, which actually do need armour, as they often go into the field to recover the damaged vehicles.

  • @JessicaKStark
    @JessicaKStark 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

External fuel tanks actually show up on a lot of tanks, and they're not really dangerous for the vehicle or its crew. If they do get hit while full, there's not enough air inside for them to ignite, and they're usually placed where a leak wouldn't get into the engine compartment. The soviet tanks with them in WWII could actually jettison them if they ran empty or before going into combat if they needed to.
Plus, as you said, this isn't a front-line vehicle. It's hanging out tens of miles away from any action, ready to shoot and scoot.
Given nuclear engines though, I'm betting it's coolant or maybe drinking water for the crew.

it could still be a SAM.
most heavy SAMs have the radar on a separate vehicle as it's a fairly massive thing by itself
the limited flight surfaces on the missiles themselves can be argued against as the intended target is mostly likely slow, unmaneuverable bombers. the missile itself is also likely nuclear tipped so doesn't have to be as close to get a proximity kill.

Dingo, As a armored vehicle enthusiast and formerly enlisted soldier... I can say that you are likely on the money with those rear tanks on the outside being Fuel/Coolant tanks... While they aren't likely the primary tanks, but rather additional bolt ons to increase the vehicles effective range. It's a feature not typical of most American designs but was used on a great number of Warsaw Pact vehicles.
As for the forward mounted cannon, it wouldn't be far fetched for it to mounted under the impression as a defensive armament, though not in a fantastic placement, many artillery carriers have been equipped with a weapon for defending the vehicle against infantry and such.
I will say, the bumper is an odd piece but perhaps it is some form of deployable support for being able to fire the missiles (likely in conjunction with a hydraulic suspension) and the bit that sticks out is to bite into the ground so the backwash from the missile doesn't push the launcher around.

You sometimes see this on trucks kitted for heavy towing

All of the gas mask soldier's gear is different (and more old-fashioned looking) from the other 2 soldiers, which might imply that he's from a different unit with lower issuing priority.
He could be some kind of MP or an EOD specialist (who wold *not* have special protective suits in the 50's/60's). The gas mask would be a good idea if either side was using chemical weapons, the lack of gloves or other chemical gear isn't great but riot police use CS without gloves all the time, and fallout's canada was in the middle of an insurgency and civil unrest.

Awesome video dude, I gotta say though, the reason we might not see air defense weapons in fallout is the fact that laser technology is so amazing.
It's already predicted that laser weapons in the real world will just beat drones, missiles and even artillery shells. In fact a lot are already in use with the us army.
The laser turrets in fallout and robots equipped with laser weapons are more reliable and cheaper then the missiles and drones being launched at them. This would actually explain why the bombs were dropped by planes which as we see with the Chinese bombers, have very shiny materials (maybe laser resistant?).
The bombs they drop might be big and round in order to make them more resistant to lasers while also too heavy to be put in a intercontinental ballistic missile, which might get shot down by lasers anyway, like Mr houses defenses did.
This might explain why the missiles in fallout 76, the missiles in the lonesome road and the ones in fallout 4s Yangtze weren't all used as the aerial Bombing is more reliable anyway and they were saved for later strikes where laser defenses might be down.

That's a really interesting callout, I could certainly see an assaultron decimating bomber formations in visual range with it's charged eye beam for sure. Then assuming they can interface with some sort of early detection equipment they could likely do so beyond visual range.
Great callout on Mr House's Lucky 38 defenses, I completely forgot his defenses were laser based in nature. Its decided, I'm scheduling a trip to the top of the lucky 38 to see if any lasers are visually present as my curiosity commands me to!
This could be! I think though that the US at least, had a healthy surplus of nukes. If I'm remembering correctly there is a warehouse full of em in the capital wasteland, and the Sentinel sight is similarly stocked to the brim.

Why wouldn't the box tail nukes be near a airfield if it is indeed a launch site?

I can see the 20mm gun on the front being an anti infantry gun incase the position that it was at became over run with enemy infantry and friendly infantry were being pushed back quicker than they could mount a defense and as it would be retreating the gun could fire back at enemy infantry and take a few out or kill enough to get distance from the enemy and possibly buy time for friendly forces to retreat and regroup and prevent getting captured. That was the use that I thought the gun could be used for and as to why they put the gun on it.

As for the armor sticking out of the front, it COULD be a plow or stabilizer, for when it's deploying it's missiles. Possibly a combination of slat armor AND explosive reactive armor, although I'd question why it's exclusively placed on the front.

Going on the basis that the introduction footage for Fallout 4 that the scene was filmed using 2 real tanks mocked up like this, the closest i have found to what the chassis is at least is possibly a T-72 or M-60 chassis
Not the tank has 6 road wheels, the rear road wheel is pretty close to the Idler wheel and the sprocket has all the weight on it giving the front end of tank slight depression, both the tanks have 6 road wheels and a similar spaced gaps between the wheels, sprockets and idler wheels and both but the T-72 is a little more farfetched since they are expensive to own in general.
As a “cgi” tank honestly the same again looking at the road wheels i came across a cancelled ww2 APC called the M44. And besides body being big the tracks and wheels look very similar so maybe if it is indeed a cgi tank in the trailer it took inspiration from the m44 apc

perhaps the missiles are raised because of the side doors getting blocked. I imagine having to climb out the top hatch would be more annoying than using the side doors. I'm a little late, but the gasmask guy could be responsible for fueling or loading warheads onto the missile. Those tanks might hold liquid rocket fuel, which is notoriously toxic, like, terrifyingly corrosive and carcinogenic. Would explain the exterior tanks and the hazmat suited soldier.
Also, i agree with some other commenters, that front bumper looks very similar to removable counterweight systems that heavy equipment use, like tractors, skidsteers, and forklifts.
The front cannon is absolutely silly, though, a top mount machinegun would suffice much better. I'm guessing this is medium range rocket artillery, optionally nuclear, meant for cross country travel and high intensity warzones.

I bet the tanks on the back would be for rocket fuel, or at least a component of the final fuel mix. Rocket fuel can be corrosive (eg Aerozine 50) and you don't want some army grunt decanting that stuff. A separate tank that attaches to the launcher's fuel lines would be safer. It also means the tanks would be empty after the TEL readies the rocket for action; so damage to the tanks from the rocket exhaust wouldn't matter (-ish any fumes would still be nasty).

I think the bumper maybe could be explosive reactive armor bricks very oddly shaped ERA but ERA none the less. And for those tanks on the side if they were carrying some liquid fuel like diesel than it isn’t as big of a problem as one might assume, if they were shot the fuel would just leak out on to the ground. But since we don’t know what is in those tanks, it could either be a major flaw or an impromptu piece of armor.

I actually assumed this thing is an Anti-Ballistic Missile system, basically an Anti Missile Missile.
In this role It'd be engaging fast-moving but non-maneuvering targets, meaning speed is extremely important to get to the target rather than trying to hit a plane actively trying to defend itself. given its size I'd assume it to be specifically deployed as a defence against Nuclear ICBM attack meaning long-range, high altitude [near or even in space] intercepts, this would also explain the lack of onboard radar system as it'd be dependant on massive over the horizon radar systems that simply won't fit on a truck... at least not with Fallout Computing levels.
I'd also like to note Soviet and Russian AA systems such as 2K11 Krug and 2K12 Kub don't have on-board radar and instead rely on other vehicles dedicated to carrying an air search radar, similar to things like US Patriot or Russian/Soviet S-300 systems... so it could still be a SAM.
Anyway, great video as always! love ya stuff.

But it does confuse me how the game has real world vehicles in one game like tactics where they have working humvees and the next game its just corvegas everywhere which gives the feeling of that somwhere the military technology was somewhat the same as real world and then split into what fallout 4 has which is super confusing or the constant changes of basically everything, example the guns not matching for every game or robots applies to how powerarmor is used like which is very inconsistent. Also the lack of varieties of vehicles like in fallout 4 everyone uses the same truck there is probably one construction related vehicle which is a yellow corvega combined with a forklift. But keep up the work the details and depth of these videos keep me on the hook!
