  • Hey y'all, in this video I go back to my routes and remaster my original hit video on Fallout 4 and Fallout 76's wild tank. It was a joy to revisit the Chryslus Patton and really give her the production quality she deserves. I hope you enjoy.

I always loved this tank because we can pretend somehow Command and Conquor happened in Fallouts' past. Tiberium would fit right in. Twin-barreled tanks are just the silliest. The sort of thing somebody designs when they don't know how tanks work or what they're for.

How would 90% of the game exist? Robots would cease to function given the elements and lack of fuel (Mr handy)
Guns would have rotted away to nearly nothing, and 200+ year old ammo would be useless, because gunpowder degrades with time, as does priming compound in the primers.
The nuclear fallout from the nukes also would have dissipated after 200 years as well, and Bethesda never explains why society never really recovers until over 200 years after the bombs dropped. Short of it, it's a game that originally was supposed to take place like 10-20 years after the nukes dropped, but Todd decided to add a zero, and here we are.

Changing the twin guns with a large Gauss Cannon is a logical option, since the US probably have tested the concept.

I don't think power armor was ever meant to outright replace tanks. Firepower difference aside, a humanoid tin suit, no matter how survivable, is ever gonna be on par with a vehicle without sacrificing mobility, and at that point, just use small tanks. On the other hand, using PA units as something of a tactical, mobile spearhead that can quickly reach areas tanks can't, and handle tasks normal units can't, seems far more reasonable.
The other option is the Enclave's, where it's just the normal uniform for them, and it's only "power" armor to all the puny wastelanders.

Well their was A reactor designed and tested by what i like to call the Three Stooges. Which oddly enough lead to the first reactor meltdown in history. But hey, this is what happens when the guy pulling the control rods is going threw a messy divorcee. And the guy who was sleeping with his wife was standing 5 feet away from him. And the last guy who was known for Faking Meltdowns for the Lulz was 10 feet away laughing at them.
Weird story, but yes they had tiny reactors that could fit into such a tank. Thou they were built mainly to be used in places like say the Artict. Where a small generator like this would be more useful.

The more I look at this tank, the more I think it was designed by AI or someone had connections at Bethesda and charge a big paycheck to design this thing. F4 tank looks like its insides are outside. I don't know how that was approved to be introduced into game, but there is also "abomination pattern assault rifle" so somebody don't care what is doing and approve all.
I don't have problems with twin barrels and quad track, personally I think this is cool and more unique concept than another generic "tank". If Bethesda wants some inspiration, take a look at Mammoth/Apocalypse tanks from C&C, M61A5 from Gundam or models made for Warhammer 40K.

  • @williamcain7022
    @williamcain7022 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

My take is that the biggest weakness of the mechanised infantry concept is the squishiness of the soldiers. The earliest IFVs like the BTR series and the Schutzenpanzer were very lightly armored, with even a relatively light M2 .50 machine gun posing a significant threat. Modern ones are approaching Main Battle Tank levels of size with ever more protection in an effort to keep the troops inside alive, but that means more of their attention has to be spent keeping their IFV alive in turn, given its cost and value. This leaves them less available to do what Mech Infantry is supposed to, which is screen and support tanks.
Power Armor addresses this issue. The firepower and mobility are in a single unit (much like the tank, come to think of it), meaning they can focus on supporting the tanks they're fighting. Their heavy armor allows them to soak up firepower an IFV would blush at, meaning they could survive longer in a tank-on-tank engagement as screening support, and deliver MANPAT firepower against enemy vehicles more reliably than mechanised infantry could.
They couldn't get as quickly into confined spaces as traditional mechanised infantry, and you couldn't reliably field as many troops, so they would likely be best used in the US Army's Cavalry role: fast response, aggressive recon, and supporting heavier armored elements as screening units that can still provide direct fire and overwatch.

I have a theory about the radiator's positioning on this tank: it wasn't originally designed to be nuclear powered, and had a conventional diesel or gas turbine power plant. When oil started running out, the military was left with hundreds or even thousands of armored vehicles that they couldn't fuel, and building replacements would be expensive and time-consuming, so the tanks were retrofitted with reactors - and enlarged cooling systems to cope with the heat - as war broke out with China. It was a botch job, but wartime necessity meant that proper engineering had to take a back seat to expediency. I imagine they were aware of the flaws and a replacement was probably being designed (possibly like the M1 Abrams briefly seen in Fallout Tactics' intro cinematic), but it obviously wouldn't be ready in time for the Great War.

The M48 Patton was approved for production in 1952. Actual full-scale production of the first combat approved version, the M48A1 didn't begin until 1955. The Korean Armistice was signed in 1953. The M48 did not serve in Korea until well after the war. The M46 served during the years of the actual Korean war.
The British Centurion is recognized as the world's first MBT. The Soviet T54/55 can be argued as one of the first MBTs, but is generally considered a medium tank. The M48 absolutely was not the first.
During all of my time in the Army, and specifically at the US Army Armor Center at Ft. Knox, I have never seen any documentation that mounting a coax machine gun is a designation criteria for MBTs.

I think an excuse for the armor shape and radiator setup could be that this tank is specialized to deal with energy weapons, which wouldn't be deflected by (typical) armor, and perhaps the tank has a sort of "subdermal" heat distribution system so the tank can expel that heat through the radiators (as well as any heat generated by the tank itself). The double barrels can also potentially help the tank stay in combat longer as the redundancy of two barrels means that if one gets distorted from heat the other can still be used (plus two barrels likely have better heat dispersal than a singular barrel)

Some critics about a 2 barreled tank,
    1. You can't aim it nearly as well
    2. most shells can kill tanks in 1 hit. You dont need 2 shells to kill one
    3. If you fired one (because it is off centered), you would then lose your targeting solution because the shot would push on one side of the tank (unless some special super stabilizer exists)
    3. Double the cannons=double the ammo and many more crew which needs a bigger turret which makes it a bigger target.

Twin sets of tracks don't necessarily provide better off-road performance. The UDES XX 20 you provided as an example only gets its superior mobility from its articulated design where the front and rear half of the vehicle can move independently of one another, allowing the vehicle to snake along the terrain and around obstacles much more effectively than a conventional rigid hull design. This principle has been extremely succesful with Sweden and other countries producing thousands of such vehicles. The fallout attomic tank doesn't have this feature however. One advantage that twin sets of tracks could have would be mine protection as it might be possible to drive using only three tracks as some armored cars are designed to do. Even so, this is a limited advantage and with the offset design of the tracks you might actually be able to blow off both tracks on one side at once

One thing I'd like to bring up about the infrastructure limitations is that pretty much everything that hauls cargo is bigger in the fallout universe and is likely capable of providing much more torque than contemporary vehicles. Trucks, planes, and locomotives are all massive compared to their modern counterparts, and that might somewhat make up for the size and weight limitations of the tank.

  • @quentinking4351
    @quentinking4351 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This is a very good video. I just have a couple things to bring up.
First is shot traps, which I honestly don't know if they apply here. Under roughly 3000 fps (roughly 900 meter/s), tank shells can bounce as a solid object, meaning shot traps are a potential problem. But as projectiles push towards and then past 3500 fps, things get weird. The impact energy is high enough that metals start to act like viscous fluids instead of solids, so in order to get better performance, the projectile is made out of harder materials like tungsten and uranium, so that on impact, the tank armor *kinda* flows around the projectile. This means modern AP rounds don't deflect or bounce on a sharp angle, so no shot trap. By the end of WWII through the 50's, these rounds were barely starting to enter service.
So who knows whether Fallout tanks are using tungsten or uranium AP rounds.
Secondly, I'm not convinced this is a proper tank. I honestly think it's some kind of armored recovery vehicle--a tow truck for tanks--like an old M578. The M578 was built on an artillery vehicle, and featured a rotating crane cab instead of a turret or gun mount. I think these vehicles were prototypes of a conversion into an engineering vehicle that went into production, only to get canceled. It then found its way into stateside training roles and national guard units that didn't face a real anti-armor threat. Starting as a behind-the-lines vehicle explains away a lot of the more egrious design defects--it wasn't meant to fight. Someone just strapped guns to itm

Rewatching. Some comments from a sci fi author:
= 2 guns on tanks is bleah. As you discussed. Also add that a single gun of even same size can have more ammunition, capacitors or other gizmos even if you dont increase the size.
= Gauss as anti-infantry. The game STargrunt included their mass driver cannon (magnetic accelerated shot aka gauss) could fire either a canister round (explodes at a distance to create a shotgun) or to cycle the gauss for rapid fire of smaller anti-inftanry or anti-light armor targets. Thus a variable gauss gun could fire AP (for tanks), LAP (light armor piercing), CAN (cannister) or AI (anti-infantry)
= Power armor for crew pointless and very negative. PA hands have not the dexterity of crew fingers. Tank crews did at first wear light padding against bumps and head impacts. Later tank crews would wear ballistics against fragments or spall. The more armor the crew wears the harder is for them to get out. Also PA crew means PA sized hatches and more internal volume for them. The volume and weight is better used for more tank armor, spall lining though crew infantry armor is okay.
= Agree on the quad track silliness. Like the dual cannon it looks cool but not to the "rule of cool".
= Nuclear engine big advantage is not needing gas. Presumably having days or weeks of driving time. As to the needs for ammunition while Gauss rifles do fire things they are just smaller thus more in a vehicle.
= Gauss weapons can be weaker against some targets like structures. Unless there is an explosive they dont explode though transfer some kinetic energy. Some targets like infantry in building are better dealt with by 100+mm explosive shell as shell goes in then explodes in all directions. Even rapid fire smaller slugs from a variable gauss is still a straight line attack and may have trouble hitting infantry inside structures.
= Overall the Fallout 4 tank as seen was a pretty silly thing.
= Your refit I'd tweak the Gauss cannon to a variable gauss cannon. A commander secondary weapon and/or missile defense laser or rapid firing weapon would also be appropriate. Maybe a launchable drone or an extending mast. For Fallout 4 cannon that could be a Mr Gutsy dock who would act as both recon and infantry hunter for the tank.
= If you really wanted to justify 2 barrels than one is a one shot type Gauss for mega AP while the other is a cannon firing a choice of shells HE, WP, CAN etc.

Well, to be fair Fallout does sit within our own period for a certain amount of time. So it isn't surprising that we would see a lot of real-life vehicles though I do wonder if there really is anything different about the Fallout Sherman Tank. Which is apparently a mixture of the M4A4 and M4A6 designs of the Sherman.
On Earth, the split track system wouldn't be really great. I can see it being very useful on other planets depending on the gravitational field. On Earth would require a lot of studying and learning how to maximize the technology. To perform just as well as traditional sets of 2 tracks.
Valkyria Chronicles is also just great both as a series and as an anime.
Aside from that, it also depends on how Rivets are done. If it's holding metal plates together no, however, there were times when it was used to reinforce a superstructure without becoming an inside bullet->Japanese. This is one example of this. Where their tanks are welded however the rivets would also help strengthen it and cover up the fact that it covers up where a button is located on their tanks to signal to the crew inside. ->Ha-Go light tanks had this.
Aside from this another option for the tank would be 2 guns, a smaller gun, and a bigger gun.
The M6A1 had a main 76.2mm cannon in the turret while the 37mm cannon was located to the side of the turret in a swivel mount that went vertical. This is generally how i can see the idea of 2 cannons still working out. The smaller can be used against lighter armored vehicles, provide defense and could possibly keep the tank in operation even if the main gun is knocked out.

love this video quality work. As someone who makes models like this, calling out all the details of the model is is a great service to all artists out there especially the speculation on what the parts might be.
Something i noticed is you very much sounded like the guy who was called to read the next page of the history book in class, some recommendations:
read the line, internalize it, then speak it as would something off the top of your head and/or use *bolds* and _italics_ to emphasize _how_ you want to say things. Helps with making your speech much more lively
double space and large font. helps with reading and prevents accidental line skips and re reading.
Overall quality vid and the redesign is a neat section. currently going through your channel and gatta say looking forward to whatever you'll post.

As for your final question, super redundant and impractical. Even modern tanks have a reputation for being cramped and confining as well as being crewed by soldiers typically on the small and skinny side. A tank designed to have people in power armor drive it would need to be twice as large to accommodate the armor frames and the frames themselves, last I checked, weren't exactly designed to be very dexterous. You'd be far, *far* better served by making a normal tank and then slapping on some spots on the sides for power armored soldiers to hitch a ride on.

    • @spydingo
      @spydingo  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Oh for sure, it wouldn't be practical. If you did do such a wild thing though, would the Tank then be a power armor carrier? Or if like you suggest, you add dedicated "bays" to the chassis of a normal tank for the deployment of power armor, would that vehicle than be a carrier? A PAC if you will?

Also, I know Canada gets annexed by force, but with how much the 2 countries worked together during the cold war I think Canada would have eventually allowed the U.S. to station troops within; especially with how bad things were heating up in the Fallout world. It would have been cool to see Canada as a more powerful nation in this parallel dimension, rather than just being Canada lol!
Maybe the Avrocar (American funded- Canadian built flying saucer project!) could have taken off (literally- because it couldn't...) and had cool lore material behind it! Maybe General Dynamics could have funded it?

19:39 I'm not defending the design but It could be the radiators are sticking out because perhaps there was a very common flaw that needed them to be repaired, crew realized wasn't worth it and abandon them. You can see there is a hatch to the side of them. The radiators themselves are on arms with pivot points as iv to fold neatly into a compact space and lower into the hull, and finally close the hatch. But just a guess, also great video!

Hi I love the redesign you did ! good job man ... as a tank/military engineering enthusiast and history buff myself there are a few use cases i can imagine for the vehicle instead of an MBT or SPG the primary one being that of an assault gun or tank destroyer as both the lack of machine guns and the more or less stationary turret would be perfectly fine in that use case (though the very existence of such vehicles in the future is questionable on the other hand its fallout so ah ) Another one would be as an superheavy MPF platform though again it would perform very poorly in that way …
unless it is an ad hoc design pressed into service during the Sino American war since power amor or more advanced tanks were in short supply

Wow- And I thought I was a critic of the Fallout tank!
You hit on all my criticisms and then some.
Porsche(Yes, that Porsche) answered the Nazi call for a Heavy Breakthrough tank. A tank we ended up knowing as the Tiger. He didn’t win the contract and had a hundred hulls pre-built. He pretty much thought he was guaranteed to win the contract!
Anyway, he was convinced that a Diesel-Electic hybrid power was the wave of the future. He found that the amount of heat generated by this system required massive cooling and therefore a rather large hull to accommodate for this. Even then, his dream was just not realized with current technology. It was an utter failure.
However he did have more than a hundred giant hulls sitting around. He used his influence to rework them into the fearsome Ferdinand Tank Destroyer.
Sadly, the Ferdinand just didn’t pan out as it had as many flaws(maybe more) as Fallout’s Patton. Most notable of was a lack of coaxial (or any) machine gun.
At the beginning of your newsreel a reference to an attack on the Alaskan Pipeline was made. If we seem to have gone full nuclear power for everything, why the continued need for oil?
Also, Alaska doesn’t seem like very suitable tank country to me.

I've always thought it looked more like a SPG than a main battle tank, especially when considering the "claws" in front of the tracks that look to be some sort of stabilizer to assist in the reduction of the recoil on the system and accuracy. Plus the lack of (sloped) armor makes far more sense as an SPG.
In terms of the radiator, I think you failed to remember that the Sentry bots have a cooling feature when there fusion core begins to get hot, it could be a similar situation where it runs on something similar to a fusion core and the radiator pops out as it starts heating up to assist in cooling.

  • @ihatethisshit8161
    @ihatethisshit8161 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I personally think such a purpose for a tank like that would not be intended for tank v tank combat but more of support for sieging an enemy position with high explosive shells or SAP Rounds to soften targets for an infantry assault with power armor. Simply put it could not function like a tank but more like a hybrid between tracked artillery and an IFV, from a logical standpoint ignoring blatant design choices that make it a nonfunctional death trap. With how the cupola is designed and the space limitations of it where in order for a human to use it, they would have to be sitting. However in the fallout universe robotics is relatively advanced and could be an area where a sensory system is dropped in to allow the crew to see around the tank. The parascope is likely to allow the driver and no one else to see, instead of a commander or gunner like traditional designs. There is insufficient space in the front part of the tank for the driver to be situated, meaning there is a likely chance that the crew would all be in the turret hull making it be the only area that truly would need to be armored, for crew survivability. Based off the design of the front part of the tank it is similar to a Soviet BT tank. With that being said this is most likely a 3 to at most a 4 man tank with a crew consisting of a Driver, Gunner, Machine Gunner and/or commander. The ammo storage of the tank is likely at the feet of the crew.
The main turrets likely has about 15-20 degrees of horizontal aiming ability and maybe ( -10 to -15 ) to ( 20 to 40 ) degrees of vertical aiming.
simply put this is likely for assaulting fortified urban positions and other fortified positions made of concrete and steel.

Making the gun biggerer doesn’t aid the design. That would require a redesign of the auto loading system and reduce the amount of ammunition available to the vehicle among other issues. A single 140mm gun would double its ammunition capacity. Speaking of, improved ammo, a longer barrel, or an improved version of the 140mm would be a leagues better option. Additionally, a Gauss weapon would introduce another issue- infantry support. With a Gauss cannon the tank would not be able to perform its own job- supporting the doughs-giving it a similar problem to Sherman Firefly. Don’t get me started on the form of the hull and turret. The Chryslus Patton is the most tortured M46 I have ever had the displeasure of seeing and I hope it doesn’t make it to fallout 5. Everything would’ve been better if they just went for like an atomic version of T54E1.
