    I remember seeing a theory that this sub was an old design and wasn't really expected to survive its mission. The idea being that both the US and Chinese navies had been ravaged to the point by constant combat, that both were scraping the bottom of the barrel and putting all manner of ships, even those that had previously been determined to be obsolete, into service. The Yangtze being a much older design that was retrofitted to be a SSBM, with this showing in the overall design of the sub.

    The Yangtze's tubes are probably caterpillar drive tubes. Like in that movie Hunt For Red October. Basically they suck in water and push it out the back like How A squid moves through the water. Apparently its extremely quiet so that would make sense.

    • @spydingo
      @spydingo  ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I like that idea given she looks so much like a squid, though I wonder where the water intakes are in that case, given I'd assume the tubes would be the siphon for directing the water for locomotion. The being quiet bit though is a bit of an odd juxtaposition with all the load screws everywhere.

    • @cen7ury
      @cen7ury ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Magnetohydrodynamic drives aren't that quiet. Via Wkipedia:
      "The film adaptation of The Hunt For Red October popularized the magnetohydrodynamic drive as a "caterpillar drive" for submarines, a nearly undetectable "silent drive" intended to achieve stealth in submarine warfare. In reality, the current traveling through the water would create gases and noise, and the magnetic fields would induce a detectable magnetic signature."

    The tubes on the stern of the Yangtze might be from a 3.5 inch room where they they eject giant Alka-Seltzer tablets to fuck with incoming torpedoes. Obviously in reality the hole they eject the tablet from is smaller

    I know in the case of metal hull ships as long as the paint stays intact the hull is protected. It’s the inner plumbing that fails first especially in the case of museum ships bc you can’t get to every single pipe like you can the hull. But 200 year old paint isn’t know for its protective abilities. also I kinda like the more technical nature of the pro con format from your other vids but I still liked this one especially the intro.

    I feel like a lot of games (or maybe just Bethesda) struggle with interiors you can traverse lining up well or being the correct scale, especially for vehicles. I feel like the lack of rooms in some areas of the sub come down to the fact this is a place that one quest happens in and they probably didn't want to over crowd the location. Would have been awsome to see a layout that is completely explorable and makes sense space wise.

    The first thing that comes to mind looking at the Yantze is that it is not very hydrodynamic to say the least and considering it's propulsion systems it seems that it would make an incredible amount of noise due to cavitation while attaining a very high speed through brute force of propulsion. Perhaps in the Fallout universe the PLAN fielded both stealth and fast submarines and this is one of the fast ones.
    The other thing that I see is the total lack of rubber tiles which would further contribute to noise.
    Finally as others have said the tube would be the exit point for the reactor coolant water.

    • @spydingo

    The tubes on the side of the ship, and the reason she doesn't have a torpedo room, are that the bow tubes aren't torpedo tubes . . .
    The Yangtze probably uses a static-electric caterpillar drive, as featured in the Hunt for Red October, thus explaining how she can be quiet enough to approach the US coast undetected.

    • @spydingo
      @spydingo  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I could buy that the bow tubes aren't torpedo tubes if the USS Democracy didn't exist. The Democracy shares the same openings on the bow but is missing the outputs that are present on the Yangze, assuming that's what the tubes are for.

    I assume that a video of the American sub in Far Harbor will be coming soon?
    As a naval historian, I agree in that this sub just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. The stern of the ship not being accessible could theoretically make sense if it’s just made up of motors driving the shaft as well as sonar arrays while the lack of a torpedo room could signify an autoloader. There was a Swedish project to develop a nuclear powered attack sub during the Cold War that would’ve had an unmanned autoloading torpedo bay so it is possible (obviously this Swedish submarine was never built). But the layout inside the pressure hull just drove me absolutely bonkers! With the crew having to traverse the reactor room to access half the boat, no wonder they all ended up as ghouls!

    • @spydingo
      @spydingo  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      tbh I like to pretend the USS Democracy doesn't exist. She doesn't really make any sense, why would two nations share the same sub design, except one is "fun sized" in comparison. I wouldn't really be surprised if that minor "redesign", if you want to call it that, was just to get her to fit in the submarine pen.
      It would be pretty odd to be just motors given there is only one small screw far to the stern, but it's cool that there could be a justification for it. I really like the idea of an autoloader, just wish I felt like there was enough space remaining in the bow for it. Maybe even a bunch of custom liberty bots from fallout 76 hanging out up there loading torpedo's lol. I'm glad you agree with me on the layout, pretty wild.

    Modern Submarines today have digital periscopes, and the periscope "mast" in the bridge does not at all line up with where it is on the sail. This is because it is a digital system, and is preferred from a safety and maintenance standpoint (the less holes you have to poke through the sub, the better. This includes getting rid of a periscope hole)

    One thing I see when I look at this sub is that the thin section looks like it’s similar in design to U-boats or the Whiskey-Class subs used by the Soviets and sold to the Chinese in the real world. Makes me wonder if the submarine was originally meant for conventional missions, then slammed a nuclear power pack and missile tubes onto it for added tactical and first strike advantage.
    Those screws make no sense though, the vibrations caused by them hitting the hull must be INTENSE.

    Just a thought on design elements here. It really looks like an amalgamation of a British T Class sub, crossed with the early SLBM launchers that, like some of the torpedo tubes of the T class, are simply bolted on. Then just make everything big and put more of them... More props, the obvious bolting on of the entire front half to a somewhat standard looking hull aft, but give it a bigger rudder back there, just to make it look cool for the 12 year olds)
    It really fits with that kit bashed (read: bastardized) nature that everything Bethesda ever makes or touches has.
    edit: Just to point it out, the T class, in heavily modified form, was operated up till 1977, around a decade after the Brits decommissioned their last... by then it did look a bit different, and was with Israel, but it had to look really out of place by that time, considering it dates back to the mid 1930s. Just imagine an interwar design, complete with riveted hull, serving well and truly long past its best by date. (and that is a 1,500 ton sub, not a 45k ton carrier like Midway... not a lot to do with such limited room and not a lot to just sell to some other country)

    More than likely, the tubes on the flanks of this Red submarine are for the reactor, or rather, the output for water that regulates the reactor’s heat.
    Irl nuclear submarines have similar design features: taking in cool sea water to carry off the heat that has already been collected by the reactor’s dedicated coolant within a closed system, separated from each other by their own pipes that meet each other somewhere along the way. Thereby, you’re not dumping metric tons of radioactive coolant into the ocean.
    Also, near all types of ships are constantly taking on water somewhere, even submarines, and typically through the shafts leading to the screws. That’s one of the many reasons why bilges exist.

    I will be honest, in that I like the design; especially after using the Dauntless sub player home mod. The mod author used the Yangtze as a base then fleshed it out.
    The reason I like the design, is the fact that in the Fallout games lore; many nations erupted in resource wars. So "theoretically", China could have needed "smaller" in armament to save resources.
    In the process, they had to redesign for longer ranges; and that is as far as I can do with this theory. I also like how in a way, it fits with the more retro sci-fi look of the fallout games.

    I have 2 theories for the exhaust-like pipes. It could be damage control water exits. She likely had still pumping water pumps due to the fact that she isn't filled to the top of her stern from the bottom of her bow, and those pipes could be used for spewing it out. My second theory is that it could be aerodynamic-related due to her very inefficient design. A way to balance it out could be to have an entrance pipe on the bow with those exit pipes allowing it to flow through and also give additional propulsion. Also smaller theory is that they are water-jet propulsion systems, like squids or octopuses have, they have an intake, and then use muscles to push it out the other side. There are real life ships that have similar systems, such as one of the types of the failed LCN's, so it is not out of the realm of possibility.

      @@spydingo It would actually look quite similar. Octopuses (idk about squids) have their water jets on the sides of their head. They can open them to intake the water, and then quickly push it back out using muscles to jet away, and usually spray ink when they do this.

  • @basedeltazero714
    @basedeltazero714 ปีที่แล้ว

    The design looks... bad. Okay, okay, the resemblance to a devilfish is neat, but it comes at the cost of making any kind of sense. Things like 'riveted steel hull... on a submarine' or 'three-blade propellers... on a submarine' almost fade into irrelevance in the face of the sheer daftness of the overall layout.
    Four propellers in a... weird layout, concavities everywhere, fricking giant fins, weird tail... and it's apparently intended to be stealthy. Though... perhaps it's intended for speed (hence the four propellors... or armor? That'd be weird, but it could explain the relatively small size of the internals relative to the outer hull, as well as the multiple propellors, though at that point the tail becomes extra strange. (Armament is... mediocre. Not terrible, but it's clearly not specializing, y'know)
    So my suggestion would be to make the design a little more conventional - no thin tail, two propellors of reasonable size - you can maybe get a way with a similarly pointed nose, but the torpedo tubes should be flush with the hull. However, it retains the bow 'wings' and two large hydrodynamic thrusters running along the front third of the ship or so, giving it the squidlike nose and width, more gently tapering towards the back. Thus you retain a similar profile while making it somewhat less offensive.
    (Still not a *good* design. You'd have to go with something truly radical (both in layout and tech) to get a really *good* design that isn't Underwater Cigar #478, and the 'benefits' of this design aren't the kind of thing you'd want in an SSBN. Fuck it, the nose fins are... stealth field... transmitter... I dunno, some fancy futuretech.)
