- Rusty Cage...first song off of Badmotorfinger and a Damn Good one at that! This song makes me wanna drive fast. I was a @soundgarden fan as soon as I heard "hunted down”. I then heard the FOPP ep on which they had covered an @ohioplayers song (Honey was a great Album) and I was Hooked. I saw them numerous times from 1988-89 to playing festivals with them a few years ago. I always thought they had "it": they were tight but loose,up and down,in and out of tune, heavy and soft, always unique. I always loved the way @Chriscornellofficial sang, His voice was so Recognizable. I saw them at the Armory in New York and he came out and did an acapella version of Beth by @kissonline , I got goosebumps. We are celebrating the music they created with this version of Rusty Cage. When @billy_butterslax , @markmenghi, @williamduvallofficial and I decided to Jam this one out it was because it moved us when we first heard it and dammit, it still does! Hope you all enjoy it and Take the time to think what Good Music does to your soul. Thank you to @dlevanchuk and @tom.w.tapley . Love to #kimthayil #mattcameron #benshepherd . I love that people are giving Duvall his props! Many AIC fans are so hateful. He's phenomenal. They KILLED THIS TRACK!
I feel like everybody needs to give proper recognition to the man that fills in for Layne Staley and covers Chris Cornell outstandingly! That's a massive fkn achievement!
Very true William is damn vocalist
I seen Alice back in 2019 Download Fest Sydney. I was not disappointed.
Shit I think he's better at covering Chris honesty . Blown away
His name is William Duvall I seen him live AMAZING there's another kid out there who sounds like him too I may be wrong I think band name is skorned🤘 rock on guys!!
th-cam.com/video/zmEGwyh6XGw/w-d-xo.html
Never gave him a chance , never listened to any aic without layne. It’s like ozzy and black sabbath , no ozzy , no black sabbath. That’s just a personal opinion but I have to say damn , he’s nailed this song.
William Duvall is an incredible vocalist, and hugely underrated.
Billy Duvall singlehandedly keeping the voices of the Grunge era alive.
@actionfigureShowcase Ed is still alive hehehe
BILLY????? lmao

William Duvall nailed it. He's done the same he's been doing with Alice In Chains for over a decade: respecting the original but adding his personal touch. Amazing.
Couldn't say it any better!
Well said, totally agree, the guy is impressive. Saw him live last year and he did a killer job. Plus I dig some of the stuff he's written for AIC.
Didn't like the guy at first, tbh. Im a huge Layne fan. But he has won me over. Then he comes out and kills this cover! Some guys just got it...
If you guys haven't yet, check out Jerry's interview with Lars.. he talks about William a bit
@@stormsmack69 I know what you mean - i felt the same way about Ray Luzier joining Korn. The groove was way off at first - maybe too rigid, but he's come around and is a general badass on the drums so that helps. BTW seeing Korn after AIC on that tour, both were impressive but wow the energy of Korn was off the charts, just as I recall from the 90's (besides the shitty amphitheater vs floor space only clubs)
This is pure ROCK ADDICTION - If you dont wanna thrash out, burn cars or just risk your life YOU AINT LIVING!!!! GEN X 😎
Yes Duvall killed it, but are we not going to talk about how MONSTEROUS that guitar tone is?
It's a b**** that's what caught my ear
Weird, the first thing I thought was how the tone sounded completely wrong.
@@TheMinishKid You do know that the idea of a cover is to put your own spin/sound on it, not to make a perfect recreation of the original? That would be a tribute.
@@TheMinishKid Did I say it sounded identical to the original? I just said it was monsterous, calm down.
First thing that caught my ear. He fucking nailed it.
Holy shit, Soundgarden 2.0? Seems like Duvall can fill in for any 90s Seattle band.
Even Mudhoney and Pearl Jam? lol
@@guilhermegarcia8750 I'm actually curious as to what he'd sound like on a pearl jam track
He sure does a great job, but Eddie Vedder has such a specific tone in his voice, it's quite hard/kind of impossible to cover it really well if you don't have a similar tone.
I think filling in for Vedder would be way harder as he would have to work harder on his vibrato to match a goat.🤣
sii,
Nice! No one can sing like Chris did, but William does a damn good job here.
William sounds even better
@@waynet9813
Not even, dude - go listen to the original again and hear how powerful and clear every note that Chris sings is. William does a damn good job here, as I said, but some of the higher notes are not as full and powerful as the way Chris sang them, and don't have the same overall depth and intensity.
Johnny Cash did an amazing job when did a cover of this song.
He sounds good in this cover. Has sucked in AiC IMO.
@@kitplummer
I wouldn't say he's sucked, he's just been more of a backup singer to Jerry than a commanding lead singer like Layne was.
one of the most important things I learned from this video was I've been pronouncing Kim Thayil wrong for years
Me too 😂
XD
Lmao I can’t believe I got it right
Takes _big_ balls to attempt that vocal, but the dude totally pulled it off. Excellent.
William had to replace Layne Staley permanently---now THAT takes balls.
@@blppt Yup, balls been hanging out for awhile now!
Anybody that still shits on this dude has either A: never seen him live, or B: is just a complete fucking moron.
I saw William's tour with AIC along side Mastadon and Deftones. Crack the Diamond Skye tour at MSG. He fucking killed it. They all did. Amazing show.
@@PostProteusKitten For reference, William replacing Layne would be similar to a guitarist today being hired by Alex to replace Eddie in Van Halen.
You gotta have some serious gumption to replace a legend, and William has been doing it for years.
William Duvall was a perfect choice for vocals on this one
William Duvall is awesome. I need to listen to more Alice In Chains.
i do,but jerry over sings william, im gonna search for songs william sings for aic,ps Ilove jerrys voice, but seriously I had no idea william could sing like this, hence the utubing forlayne songs he sings
@@patrickbryant8537 listen to William’s solo album
he does a lot of great vocal work on their recent record, rainier fog, namely so far under and fly
He is totally under utilized in AIC. I understand why, but what a shame as this man can sing.
@@patrickbryant8537 go watch the guitar session AiC edition he kills Rooster and Would. Saw them August of 2019 and it's so badass
Everyone's nailing this, but William's riding high on this one. Incredible.
Charlie Benante wins the award for 2020 Musician of the Year. So much awesomeness put out by him this year in an effort to make 2020 even the slightest bit remotely bearable. THANK YOU!
I second that.
I third it.
I hope he puts these songs on an album, though I don’t know how clearances would go with so many record companies involved.
Yep.Charlie and Two Minutes to Late Night are the best at this time.
I'll forth it.
Bill from Mastodon NAILED IT !!!!
Duvall has definitely The Grunge Voice.
He nailed the song in his own way... damn good!
@LF X you are entitled to your opinion
@Saitama I was talking about what he said about Duvall in Aic but thank you for not being toxic and starting to call people dumbass
@Exaggerated Lean Walk so pearl jam aren't grunge !!!! Grunge was the greatest musical era in history, so go back to bed
@Exaggerated Lean Walk i already have and there is no need for insults !!! If you think grunge never existed that's your opinion, I have my own opinion, and for the record green river weren't grunge and I never said mother love bone, or the melvins were grunge !!!!!
Makes you appreciate how much of a legend Chris Cornell is when bad ass vocalist has to give 150% just to do a cover song! William Duvall is one of the only vocalist that should ever try to do Chris Cornell cover.
and let's not forget that Cornell both played the guitar and sang on this song!
Ritchie Kotzen also
his microphone is wrapped in a rusty cage
@@Jock-mj4zd vocally yes, but he's got his own guitar thing going on
And to think that Chris played guitar AND sang this song when playing live.... TALENT
Chris was a god amongst mere mortals.
And wrote the song too !!!
@@hinjurock this
They always sounded terrible when they did this song live on guitar. No idea if the guitars were out of tune or if the gear was suspect? Here it sounds amazing.
It's like opera. Those people sing and act at the same time. Sooo talented!
Hearing Bill play this song makes me realise now that Mastodon actually takes quite a bit of influence from Soundgarden. Especially in the whole sideways weird dark riffing. I could totally see Chris Cornell singing on a Mastodon track. RIP Chris - such a huge talent he was
Actually all of them, Soundgarden, Mastodon, and most of the sludgy bands out there were influenced by the Melvins
@@MozTheBoz Melvins and Soundgarden were coming up around the same time. Soundgarden took most of their dark sludgy style from Black Sabbath and mixed that up with Beatles.
@@Jock-mj4zd yeah no disrespect to Melvins. Great band and undoubtedly an influence to all the grunge bands. But Soundgarden had a very distinctive sound
@@Grimeyhoob Not to mention the irregular time sequences
Brent Hinds, Chris Cornell, and Ozzy all have a similar sounding voice. That bluesy powerful singing voice
Amazing! Plus educational because I now know I've been pronouncing Thayil wrong for 30+ years.
I can’t lie... me too
Hahaha, me too! I rewound it to double check. I have been pronouncing it "tie-ell"!
Everyone is in the same boat but you were big enough to mention it. Thank you.
Yeeeeeeeeup. :-)
I always said it like Thale
Johnny Cash did it.
Soundgarten did it.
These dudes did it too.
And Kim approved.
This is exactly the sound that made me a slave to Soundgarten's super heave grind back in the day.
R.i.p. Chris ❤
if Kim says yes then thats the mega seal of approval....you guys just cheered my Covid lockdown day up , its a little thing but i smiled while watching it , probably the first time today - thx
It seems really cool when your peers get together and pay tribute to their favorite bands and cover their favorite songs.
AIC covered Hunted Down and Boot Camp a few years back in tribute to Chris Cornell. If anyone doubted he could pull off a Soundgarden song, that performance should convince you otherwise. I've loved every album he's done with AIC and the man has serious chops. Amazing cover.
They also performed hunted down with Layne : th-cam.com/video/r8gHRyjjj60/w-d-xo.html
...my thoughts exactly!!
Seen them three times with William. The man can sing.
@@oscarpicon7164 So did i. I see Alice in Chains in Cincinnatti at Horseshoe Casino 2014 and 2015, and at Taft theater 2016. They introduced themselves as the cast from WKRP in Cincinnatti. It was an old sitcom, pretty funny.
The more time that goes by, the more impressed I am with Duval.
I love how Charlie sneaks in very subtly some double kick here and there. what a great collaboration. I fking love the singer. his delivery is so zen.
Hello Charlie. It's nice to discover you from the rock I've been living under. I'll be over here with my drink, in awe. Thank you 🍻
Kim Thayil was an absolute creative guitar genius...what a song 👍
Don't forget Chris
I'm pretty sure Chris Cornell wrote most of their songs. Kim is a pretty original player though. I will give you that
Wow. Dude could seriously front... double duty. Wow
Charlie and everyone who has collaborated with him have made this "online" year so much better than it could have been. The positivity of every video he's posted has kicked all the crap this year has thrown at us into the gutter and left TH-cam a nicer place to be! Keep it up and thanks, to you and all the other players, for every one of these videos!
Absolutely love Soundgarden and drumming along to this song in particular, and this is an absolutely amazing cover - Great work! Brilliant tribute to a legend.
The odd-metered drum beat on the slow outro is hard.
Very well said, it has been awesome watching these jams!!
agreed! if anything this year has made it possible for super collaborations - the we care a lot video is also amazing!
@@hinjurock I think every drummer loved Matt Cameron, like every band loved Soundgarden, right from the start!
Well, maybe not everyband? Until they heard, and/or saw the band!
I was ever so fortunate to see Soundgarden on the "Louder Than Love" tour, in a small club in Syracuse, NY (Lost Horizons). Maybe in 89!? I remember most of the band wearing black T-shirts w/ "90" printed in white on the front (someone explained the reference to me? I forget now).
Soundgarden were always the cream of the crop, even though other bands were more "popular", or had more "Top 20" songs, like STP, and Pearl Jam, etc.
Soundgarden were loved by more other bands, at the time, then any band I can remember, easily. We had a band and lived above a Metal club(mostly metal). And we were very blessed to meet and hang with many bands!
I don't ever remember anyone in a band, not loving Soundgarden, lol!
At one local gig, not sure who was playing, but I noticed a guy with a black leather jacket w/the "Badmotorfinger" logo on a cool patch on back. I asked him if he worked w/Soundgarden. Bad ass jacket!
He turned out to be Matt Cameron's drum tech! He had some great stories about Matt "improvising" during a drum fill, etc, and how the "Faith No More" drummer was watching Matt play, along with the drum tech, and Matt improvised a sick drum fill.
"How'd he do that?", The FNM drummer asked the tech. "I don't know, but he does it all the time". "That's just Matt!"
Lol, I remember asking him if Matt smoked bud.
"Constantly!', was his answer!
An Amazing band! That'd never go on without Chris Cornell.
What's great about creating a Legendary band like this, is that their music lives on forever!
I'm not sure who's doing what, nowadays, but I'm sure there's other projects on the horizons!
Chris's deep, strong voice with that high, piercing scream made all the hairspray Metal singers look & feel like girls, tm.
@@timturk1899
I saw them on that tour as well, at the Country Club in Reseda, CA the night before they recorded the Louder Than Live video at the Whisky. I remember being really impressed with Matt Cameron's drumming and Chris' vocals were godlike.
I genuinely cant like this enough, defintately gets a regular play. Love Thayils approval message
3 years from my last comment and it's STILL awesome
The importance of Soundgarden in rock music is tremendous. And this is just a perfect, flawless cover of a monster of a song.
What a fucking privilege it is to hear these four do such a fantastic cover.
Duvall vibing and swaying to the music before vocals kick in is fab
That was awesome sounding, I think Chris Cornell would be proud
The vocals are SO on point! Great job boys!
Damn William sounds great, especially during the closing breakdown part!
Better than the original
Was just thinking the same. Watching that part right now. Nailing it.
3 Words... FILTHY, FILTHY, FULTHY ❤❤❤❤
Holy fuck, if this doesn’t show how truly great of a vocalist William is... such an incredible cover guys.
this song is legendary...
No one can replace Chris Cornell, (and Williams not trying to either) but damn, he's done a brilliant job of singing this track!
Filling Laynes shoes in Alice in Chains is proof enough of the talent he's got!
An outstanding tribute to Chris!
Fucking nails it!!! William Duvall has some serious pipes. Recognize.
Another day saved by you, Charlie, and your peeps. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Keliher does not get the props he deserves as a guitarist. the man is a fucking beast!
The vocal performance was insane! He killed it.
Dude in the forest totally nailed the rocking chair part at 0:49
Duvall's performance at Chris Cornells tribute show was spot on. He sang Hunted Down with Jerry and Temple of the Dog members. Was pretty blown away by how close he was to the original sound. William does a stand up job for Alice. Have seen them 3 times since 2016. Hope they carry on Alice's truly historic legacy.
What a great video!!!! Saved to Playlist!!!
What an absolutely killer cover of this Soundgarden classic, standing ovation to all 4 musicians, they did an excellent job.
R.I.P Chris Cornell thank you for the great music
It’s a given nobody can ever replace my uncle Chris, but hot damn my guys vocals gave me straight up chills
Wanted to hear how you would play the middle, such a fantastic bridge 🔥🔥🔥
And some people still wonder how Duvall the AIC gig. Fools.
I needed this today, you guys nailed it.
Of all the covers I’ve seen with multiple members of different bands coming together ... this is the one that actually needs to lead to a supergroup for me. They all sound so natural together.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, after all Jerry would never have continued AIC if he hadn't discovered an amazing vocalist---anybody who isn't bringing it would get torn to pieces by the fans for following Layne.
William Duvall is such an amazing singer. Perfection. His range is insane!
+1 for the Michael Anthony poster
Billy Beachyslax on riffs.
Damn he sounds good
Wow, this was a seriously badass cover! Everyone was on fire here, especially William. The man can freaking sing. I bet Chris would be proud. :)
Next he’ll be singing for STP and then Nirvana. I’ve also heard he might replace Naomi in The Judds.
Please, Charlie Benante, we need a metal cover for jesus Christ Pose e Outshined
Dude, that would be fuckin 🤘🏻.
JCP is huge. The Sabbath cover too, into the void....
Those would be great to hear again with bill's voice
Jesus Christ Pose is already so metal...
such a hard song to sing, and this dude nails it.
The contribution of all the musicians here CANNOT be overstated, but I have to say, thank God for William Duvall! Not only one of the best voices in Metal, but goddamn, the best hair too! This video not only made my day, but if I'm being honest, choked me up a little too. Soundgarden for President!
That was just amazing. One of my all time favorites.
You guys nailed it!
William pays tribute to Lane and Chris at a time.
William has the credits to stand on a stage with AIC as well as with Soundgarden to pay tribute to both fallen grunge-heroes.
Absolutely well-done, wow!
Great cover, William brought it. It takes a lot of balls to cover a song like Rusty Cage, you can’t touch Chris’s Cornell because he’s too good. But he did an admirable job, along with Charlie, Bill and Mark (love the dog). Thanks guys, can’t wait for the next cover.
His voice is amazing.
Chris would be proud
Es increíble lo que canta Duvall. Es un genio!!
Random Michael Anthony poster is random but awesome :)
Holy God I didn't expect this kind of performance from William he really summoned Chris here. What a job by these guys.
When we used to play this cover in the clubs, the crowd went INSANE!!! We never nailed it this good though.
Damn dude can do not only Lane Staley but a damn good Chris Cornell! Super blown away!!
If Kim, Matt, and Ben were to eventually get together somewhere down the road (or near future 🤞) I know who I’d like to see in the position of the irreplaceable Chris Cornell.
I miss Chris Cornell so much. This cover kicks ass and WD is a great singer!
Everything about this ruled. I'm already an AIC and GTO fan but I still didn't expect Willlam to kill it so well. And yes, killer guitar tone too! 10/10 🤘🏾
There is no filling Chris's shoes, but this dude did about as good as anyone could possibly do.
Even better
Sounds like he's getting a little help.
For you guys comparing Chris and William, despite how dull it is, a little logic exercise:
> Chris was 27, in his prime, when he recorded Badmotorfinger. He used all his range during the 90s
> Will is 53, pretty far from his prime and one year older than Chris by the time of his passing
> Chris couldn't do justice to his own song in more recent performances, mostly due to age, drug use, touring and his delicate emotional state. William can, tho.
See how stupid it is to compare both?! Now shut the fuck up and just listen to this great tribute to the memory of the unforgettable Chris Cornell. Rest in peace
I might sound like old man yells "GET OF MY LAWN!" but it is refreshing to hear a heavy song open with the drummer pounding on an actual ride cymbal. While I am happy that metal is still alive and well, I noticed that as time went on the ride cymbal has been replaced by a crash and the hi hat's been replaced by the double bass pedal. If you're hammering a double bass pedal for the entire song, then how are the double bass sections gonna sound bad ass if the WHOLE song has double bass. Anyway on a side note, I got BadMotorFinger way back in middle school and this sounded awesome!
Back again..love this cover. Even the bassmans Tone hound is waggin' with approval 👌
I don’t know why I’m surprised by William Duvall killing this, but I am.
This is one of the best collabs I’ve seen yet!
William Duvall nails it! He should be the successor of the deceased singer in that four-piece Seattle rock band!
Maybe he can replace Kurt Cobain in a reformed Nirvana too, then he'd be covering for three dead singers.
@@hinjurock - Mother Love Bone would be a fourth opportunity.
that bass got balls! amazing cover!
William sounds amazing!!
Christ that singer is pretty damned good. I forgot for a second it wasn't Chris.. rip
Damn, this is a killer version, love you guys for doing this cover!!! I still love the album badmotorfinger so much.
JESUS CHRIST POSE next, please! 😉
Keep it up and huge regards from germany! ❤️👍
awesome performance/version
Man those guys from Mastadon really get around but everything they touch seems to be super awesome!
I really liked this version and William sounds great!
Love Soundgarden. No one sings like you anymore!
Mastodon are the greatest band in metal right now.
@@shka-n1t For 20 years
@Brent Harper I like Tool but Mastodon is better, different from the rest. I like both though.
I grew up listening to Benante before Anthrax was kool...
This video is proof that CB is the most gifted drummer alive !
I called it back in 1981 before anybody!!!
Oh my , that was one god damn epic piece of music right there . Loved this song since I first heard it playing "road rash" . When I heard Chris had passed away I never thought I'd hear a good version of this song done again, but you guys just totally killed it. I found this being an Anthrax fan and checking out Charlie's side projects. Wish I'd found it sooner. Congrats to all involved with producing this it's fucking epic!!
William Cornell
Charlie...me and the rest of the world want to thank you for helping make 2020 a great year for music...your colabs have been amazing...thanks for your content...much love from New Zealand
Great performance. Vocals are unbelievable!
How awesome would it be if everyone who helped Charlie with these awesome covers put on a few shows after all this craziness is over?
I can never separate this song from my memory of hearing it for the first time, before it's mastering or release. Ben Sheppard's mother , Gay, was here at my place and she sang it through and through while in our hot tub. She was incredibly proud of her son and his bands' building success. NOTHING shines brighter than a mothers love.
