I remember watching (and recording on Betamax!) the whole concert. IIRC, she had been singing non-Italian roles at the Met, and prepared this difficult aria to show Levine that she could sing Verdi very well. She then sang Aida at the Met, and other roles too.
Best ever rendition none like this one , no Callas , no Price , No Mitchell, just her in this one, and specially in this performance , easy, beautiful , soft , colour, fiato , legato , all in one
Anna Tomowa-SIntow was the first soprano I ever heard sing this and it is still one of the best, in my opinion. And I love having the lyrics underneath. I've attempted this difficult aria myself (with varying degrees of success it has to be said!!), so having that prompt there is lovely. Thanks for this upload.
It is a fine interpretation but I would recommend listening to Rosa Ponselle and Leontyne Price in this aria. I don't think Mrs. Tomowa-Sintowa reaches that level of vocalism.
Leona Mitchell owns this aria as well! Im not taking anything away from Anna Tomov Sintow as she sounds wonderful in this piece. I've always loved her voice especially as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni
Just wanted to point out that she is singing in the key of E flat rather than the D flat that is shown above. Just stating that in case there is a musician interested in performing this song. 😊
Wrong. It's in Bb. The music below it shows the key of Ab. Remember when there are flats, it's always the penultimate flat that determines the key. In this case the Eb refers to the 5th of the chord, the tonic being Ab. Still bring it up a whole step and it is actually sung in Bb. I've never seen it in Ab.
Grande Tomowa!

Incredible how she sings such a complicated aria with such a relaxed body and voice and with an absolut control of the air. Thank you very much.
