  • I played chess against a guy called Johnny whilst visiting Washington Square Park in NYC last summer! (This park is known for having a ton of chess players and chess hustlers). This was one of my most memorable chess games from NYC so I wanted to share it with you even if it was a while ago, hope you enjoy! :D

I was so hooked by this video the entire time. It’s beautiful how you gave this guy the time of day to listen and engage with him, you can see how much of a difference that made. I’m from New York, and I just ADORE the vibe and openness people have there generally, as well as the international vibe. The spontaneity of people’s interactions there is what makes it such a beautiful place, and this was one of those core New York experiences, talking to a wacky and sweet human and getting some wildly cool perspectives.

Her incredible patience and kindness says volumes about her! So cool to watch. Man I was getting tired of hearing him talk, and I think he was talking somewhat to protect his ego incase he losses. Kept saying too that his talents are not on the chess board but in understanding people. But he can play quite fast and while barely looking. And when he thought she was distracted in conversation at 10:00, I think he tried to cheat. I'm doubtful that was an accident with the way he stopped talking, and looked away all nonchalantly. Felt a lot like a guilty tale. Glad she caught him! Watching ego death is really fun. 😆

It's part of his game. Friendly, repetitive, not-always coherent chatter that distracts and breaks any rhythm or concentration. It goes with his method of play--sudden, rapid two-hand move-and-capture, trying to make everything a surprise. But Anna is GOOD, and handles the board and the opponent equally well.
