When introducing new players to the game, the challenge is not to explain how to play chess, that's easy. The challenge is to get them excited to play chess, and this guy has mastered that.
He’s happy to explain the game to a new player, it’s not a problem. He’s amused when the new player beats him, it’s not a problem. He’s excited when he finds out she’s actually very experienced, it’s not a problem. This guy taught us a lot about chess and also a good lesson on life.

I just played this man four games this morning before catching the bus out of NYC after a weeklong trip. This is not a special moment caught on camera, this man is just kind and wholesome energy all day long. Loves the game even though he knows he's not the best in the park and wants to share that with anyone possible. Makes a hundred friends every day and is a living mechanism for bringing the community together.
"I WANNA PLAY YOU ONE MORE" This guy is a child in an old man's body in the best possible way. I can only hope to have his level of passion about literally anything at some point. What an awesome dude

And when he learned that she was a Grandmaster, he was even more excited to play against her in an honest match. He didn't feel cheated, abused, or trolled. Really like the way the guy handled it when told she was a grandmaster. Instead of getting annoyed that he was "tricked", he was so excited that he was getting the chance to play someone at that level, and wanted to keep playing. That is true passion!
This guy was a pleasure all the way, beginning to end. When he thought she was a novice he treated her with respect and did an excellent job teaching and making it interesting. When he found out who she was he continued being great.
Yeah I think it's easy to laugh at the idea of a GM being taught basics by a hustler in NYC... but if you remove the fact that she is a GM, this man speaks incredibly respectfully and eloquently of chess and actually paints quite the impressive mental image. I think anyone would be lucky to learn chess this way

It is so refreshing, after all the trash-talkers. He is very respectful even when he thinks, you are novices. Then, when he loses, he seems more excited about your mom’s tactic than sad or angry to lose. Ultimately a super wholesome show of passion for chess.

I met this guy today, after I played a game with him this 4 year old came by and he taught her like I’ve never seen. 10 minutes in and she was playing fully capable. Such a great teacher

I used to play a miniatures game and got really good at it. It gets to a point where beating new people is boring. The best victories are against the loudmouths.

We can have a long talk whether or not it was 'ok' for him to 'simply' assume the both could not play, but then we 1) enter into the fair assumptions based on probability from experience one always makes to assess a situation and 2) based on their very hesitant responses resulting on his heartily invite. The moment they kept quiet on his first basic introduction/questions, the 'trick'/ 'lie' started. Also keeping quiet can be a lie/trick. And in this case certainly. And consciously purposefully even, as it would make 'a great video' if done respectfully. And this great man's response made it indeed a good clip.

Tears, he's so good at teaching with passion and excitement, never actually looked down on her but kept cheering her on the whole way. And his childlike excitement when he found out made me tear up. He might not be a chess grandmaster but he’s clearly an advance player and a master storyteller. And what a beautiful reaction when he realized he’s playing against the real deal. The lack of ego and all the excitement he expressed could only come from true wisdom. Mom might have resented a little bit his condescending tone at first but you could tell she realized at the end its was all theatrical fun for him. A way to amuse himself in the most benign way. He is clearly not after winning the game. He willingly blundered his knight just to tell his story, and so that a move later he can teach that trading favors whoever has more material. There is no ego in this for him. Only the joy of spreading chess as wide as he can.
He was good enough to know he had been had and she was much better than she feigned. His reaction was great. " You tricked me. I shouldn't even saying anything you know more than me." Very humble and then he excitedly wanted to play a grandmaster to really test himself. Amazingly sincere interaction
Nah, he,'s too fond of listening to himself perorate instead of engaging the other person. He should have assessed his student's level of understanding before starting lecturing. A good teacher listens to his students.
He’d probably be a great coach for kids who are beginners. He’d have to do two things though … tidy up his opening play and (this is what I taught kids as a chess coach myself) always assume your opponent is actually a good player no matter what they look like i.e. always treat your opponent with respect.

I would assume that most people that I come across are beginners, considering that only 10% of people play chess with any amount of regularity. And the fact that I can only probably recognize about 7 chess masters by their face. Male or female, living or dead.

When this man said, "oh my goodness! I want to play you one more!". I cried. I'm a 43 year old guy, and the complete lack of ego or anger in this guy is what I need to strive for in life. The story he told was just misdirection, to hide his rather bad sleight of hand. Doesn't work against a strong player though. You can't really just move pieces out of turn, if something else isn't going on, can you? The guy sitting next to him had another method. He put extremely little time on the clock, then knocked his own pieces over, out of turn. Thereby eating up his opponents time.
You don't need strategy at chess. The strategy led your forces to the battlefield. No allies on both sides will switch sides or join later. Now is the end of strategy and the beginning of tactics. You open the battle with a standard formstion and build your swift and unexpected tactics around it.

He wasn't just teaching, he was telling a whole story. The well-developed character of the player is showing on the board. I can see why Anna wanted to record him in action, I wasn't even thinking about the surprise mother anymore.
He is such a good teacher and coach. He sets a scene and explains the concept in context of a literal battlefield. Every chess player should be coached by this type of person.

I love this guy. He was clearly very passionate about chess and when he found out he'd been teaching a grandmaster he was even more excited. What a great attitude he has.
He's a gem. A little old fashioned but full of heart. He was never condescending. And was not ambarassed when he found out she's a grand master.

I used to play a miniatures game and got really good at it. It gets to a point where beating new people is boring. The best victories are against the loudmouths.
Yeah I love that he was genuinely trying to teach someone chess, and even when he found out he was being trolled he didn't get upset, he actually got more excited and just wanted another shot at it, all teachers should be like this.
I love being an advocate for a hobby. Introducing others to it and helping them get to the point that they can run screaming into thenight with the hobby is the best feeling.

We can have a long talk whether or not it was 'ok' for him to 'simply' assume the both could not play, but then we 1) enter into the fair assumptions based on probability from experience one always makes to assess a situation and 2) based on their very hesitant responses resulting on his heartily invite. The moment they kept quiet on his first basic introduction/questions, the 'trick'/ 'lie' started. Also keeping quiet can be a lie/trick. And in this case certainly. And consciously purposefully even, as it would make 'a great video' if done respectfully. And this great man's response made it indeed a good clip.

Tears, he's so good at teaching with passion and excitement, never actually looked down on her but kept cheering her on the whole way. And his childlike excitement when he found out made me tear up. I hope everyone gets to feel those kinds of feelings for something they're passionate about. It's truly amazing.

I clicked on this video so fast. Pia, the Bob Ross of chess, playing a super enthused hustler. I was not disappointed.
He might not be a chess grandmaster but he’s clearly an advance player and a master storyteller. And what a beautiful reaction when he realized he’s playing against the real deal. The lack of ego and all the excitement he expressed could only come from true wisdom. Mom might have resented a little bit his condescending tone at first but you could tell she realized at the end its was all theatrical fun for him. A way to amuse himself in the most benign way. Beautiful interaction! Humanity at its best. ❤
He is clearly not after winning the game. He willingly blundered his knight just to tell his story, and so that a move later he can teach that trading favors whoever has more material. There is no ego in this for him. Only the joy of spreading chess as wide as he can.

He’d probably be a great coach for kids who are beginners. He’d have to do two things though … tidy up his opening play and (this is what I taught kids as a chess coach myself) always assume your opponent is actually a good player no matter what they look like i.e. always treat your opponent with respect.

Which isn't the worst thing I guess, but I'm touchy about things like that. Of course Pia is the most docile, calm person I've ever seen play chess. Great video, really. I learned a lot.

You don't need strategy at chess. The strategy led your forces to the battlefield. No allies on both sides will switch sides or join later. Now is the end of strategy and the beginning of tactics.
You open the battle with a standard formstion and build your swift and unexpected tactics around it.

He is such a good teacher and coach. He sets a scene and explains the concept in context of a literal battlefield. Every chess player should be coached by this type of person.
