The amount of math in this song is outta this world. Pun intended! EDIT: I missed some keyboard solos as I thought theywere guitar. Hard to tell when everything is burning at warp speed ⚡⚡ Since I recorded this reaction I have gone back and listened 3 or 4 times. LOL its a system overload every time Hit me up when I am live on Twitch and tell me what you think of this song ⏩ www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony
I feel like that's the classic Dream Theater experience. When I was getting into them I went through a period of assuming all the solos were guitars, then realizing the keyboards often sounded like guitars and suddenly thought all the solos were keyboards. Now I feel a bit more confident in distinguishing from knowing their styles -- but only a bit more confident!
No one compares to this band. They are an absolute All Star team. I finally felt my age ( 57) this past April when with a hard copy Dream Theater concert ticket in my Tundra's glove box, I was too tired after our 4+ hour High School baseball game ( I am the baseball coach) to drive 2.5 hours to Dallas for my 9th Dream Theater concert. I am embarrassed will always regret it. Thank you for playing this GREAT song.
I treated myself with their concert for my birthday, 57th, by the way, in May. They played this album with their older stuff and as a special treat, they played The Count of Tuscany, which I've never heard live before. After 12 hours at work I drove some 150 miles to the neighbouring country. My rule: if they play in a 500 mile radius from me, I'm there. It was my 8th.
Wow, what a great reaction! Picking up all those details on the first listen, amazing. I‘ve seen hundreds of reactions in recent years, but this became instantly one of my favourites. Subbed!
I had the great pleasure of seeing them in April and they can play it live, which is insane, the changes in signature and feel through this one song put most bands albums to shame, it deserved its grammy. The drumming is insane but the rest of the band are having to work hard too.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Live they are spot on, from every note to every second, ALL the time, including the mix. It's beyond believable. The further they go and older they get, the tighter they get. It's just remarkable (and scary).
You know that when you start laughing at drum grooves or fills, there are some sick stuff happening! Mangini is a complete monster! And the sweetest guy!
I'm not sure what you've heard before or what's on your list but here are some general suggestions based on Dream Theater, Nightwish, and Jinjer which you already reacted to: Dream Theater - Shattered Fortress (Live at the Boston Opera house) for a live experience from them with Mangini's kit setup Opeth - Blackwater Park Unleash The Archers - Awakening Symphony X - The Walls of Babylon Periphery - Reptile Animals as Leaders - Monomyth (drum playthrough)
FWIW, there's an instrumental version of the CD floating around on the interwebs. It's nice because they changed up the mix to fill in the space left by the missing vocals.
As much as I love 'The Alien', Track 2 'Answering the Call' is probably the strongest song of the CD. It feels like a 'modern, exotic take on Rush's Tom Sawyer' even with the amazing phased intro.
in your video the 5:13 mark until 16:07 is not a guitar but Jordan Rudess doing a synthesizer solo. Jordan does this a lot where the guitar solo will start and then he finishes it. Sometimes both guitar and keyboard are playing in unison with each other.
I’m so used to intricate, complex and instrumental music that the lyrics are at the forefront for me. I guess it’s a matter of how used to this stuff you are though. Especially when you listen to a lot of this stuff instrumentally, vocals are very noticeable haha
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but you failed to mention Jordan Rudess Keyboard playing. Some of the things you were calling guitar, were in fact Keys. I get it mixed up all the time. There's so much there. Jordan has Two big solos on the keys towards the end. Listen for the Synth. This Song The Alien, Won a Grammy this year for best Progressive Metal song. How cool is that. Looking forward to seeing you do more Dream Theater reactions. Here's a link, just for you. It's Mike Mangini drumming to The Alien in the Studio. Now you get to see the Drum for yourself. th-cam.com/video/EFx19PMxGTc/w-d-xo.html Mike Mangini The Alien Tour Prep
Tony, this is my first time listening to your reaction videos and just like you I am in awe of everything dream theater has put out since the beginning. I had the pleasure of seeing them live way back in the 80s when they first came out and they are undescribable but I will try… Every time I think I am a musician and start to get the big head I listen to dream theater and half of me just wants to quit but the other half is in awe. How do you keep surpassing your self over and over and over. Trying to compare a normal musician to them is like getting five guys at the gym to play against the 1992 dream team. We are not worthy to change their guitar strings or carry their gear. You just have to sit back and enjoy the best of the best of the best. Every one of them is a prodigy/virtuoso/mega god/no words to describe… but I tried
Subbed for the Band-Maid and Jinjer, but I used to be a huge DT fan. I even have the Live Scenes from NY album that was released on 9-11-01 then recalled a day later with the flaming twin towers on the cover. Mangini is an absolute machine, but there is just something sterile about it I haven't been able to get into since Portnoy left. It's too precise somehow. Unleash the Archers "Awakening" is another good YT reaction since you like musicians.
If you think this is insane you should check out Dream Theater's instrumental side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. Please react to Hypersonic from Liquid Tension Experiment 3. Petrucci and Rudess of Dream Theater reunited with Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater drummer) and Tony Levin of King Crimson to release this instrumental monster of an album. The whole album is beyond god level. You should also check out Acid Rain from their 2008 live in LA show. IT'S INSANE!!
Speaking of math you should checkout "Dance of Eternity" along with a short video of Mike Portnoy (former drummer but played Dance of eternity) verbally counting the songs time Signature to demonstrate the complete insanity of it!!!! :) He actually runs out of breath and isn't even PLAYING it!!!....It's hilarious!!!!!!
You should also check out some Tool! My favorite band of all time. The Grudge is a great intro song to them. Danny Carey absolutely goes NUTS on the drums in the outro.
Right on point, bro! The Grudge is in my top 3 best songs ever, but really, every single song from TOOL is a masterpiece. Also, that drum outro drops my jaw every single time! And the scream... 🤯

That guitar solo you said in the 16 mins is actually a keyboard solo man.
Dream Theater love doing that pairing solo between guitar & keyboard.
The best

The Dream Theater effect: makes non-musicians want to start playing, and makes musicians want to quit.
Lol. Makes sense
Hahaha, yuppp 👍👍
Yep...I have four drum sets...pretty much set them all on fire. Officially retiring! 😀
Thank you for the thirteen years, Mike Mangini.

The rest of this album is also beyond epic. The title track will just take your breath away.
I'm going to let my brain reset a bit then get back into it
Also you should listen to Awaken the master

Thanks I appreciate it
This is song had made me hold my breath and said "holy crap, this is not only song. This is a new masterpiece."
Great reaction video man. The second part of the solo where you said "it evolves" was actually Jordan Rudess. Keyboard solo \m/
My favorite band of ALL time! Love videos like this 😁

Yea it melted my mind. Can't imagine live
Live they hit note by note and still full of energy on the stage in their 50s

Mangini has a video on his youtube channel where he's playing this live to the track, it's even more impressive to see him playing this
Loved your reaction!! It mirrors millions of people around the world who have had the pleasure and privilege to hear their music
It's weird that I haven't found this video sooner. DT is one of my favourite bands, it was fun watching, hearing your reaction.
Hey Danny Carey Pneuma live Drum Session is a must do !!! Trust me :)
I'm not sure what you've heard before or what's on your list but here are some general suggestions based on Dream Theater, Nightwish, and Jinjer which you already reacted to:
Dream Theater - Shattered Fortress (Live at the Boston Opera house) for a live experience from them with Mangini's kit setup
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Unleash The Archers - Awakening
Symphony X - The Walls of Babylon
Periphery - Reptile
Animals as Leaders - Monomyth (drum playthrough)
Sweet. Thank you for the suggestions
Also, if you are interested the drummer Mike Mangini does a drum video of him playing this by himself. It's worth a view
Playing it at 110% speed, no less.
Awesome reaction to the untouchable Dream Theater.
I think John Petrucci states this is in 17/8, if I am not mistaken.
Yeah, that was the opening, The Alien, for Partielle live in Sweden. It was like, oh welcome to the show and then it just took off. it was AMAZING.
FWIW, there's an instrumental version of the CD floating around on the interwebs.
It's nice because they changed up the mix to fill in the space left by the missing vocals.
Oh that's good info. Thank you
No time sig changes until the 6/8 chorus- the rest of it is in 17/8 (or 7/8 and 5/4 repeated). Bananas!
As much as I love 'The Alien', Track 2 'Answering the Call' is probably the strongest song of the CD. It feels like a 'modern, exotic take on Rush's Tom Sawyer' even with the amazing phased intro.

Such great playing🤟 🎶Hard to tell sometimes when you can't see them as fx are so similar
A lot are layered with guitar and keyboard syncing with DT.
Love the breakdown and analysis 🔥

Great production quality and very knowledgeable reaction. loved it
So that backend section of solo is not the guitar but the keyboardist going wild
Yeah i figured I would miss some of those. Hard to tell sometimes when no visual is there if its a guitar with fx or keyboards. Such a killer band!!!
What you called “the guitar solo” was keyboard the second half…. The transition was flawless
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but you failed to mention Jordan Rudess Keyboard playing. Some of the things you were calling guitar, were in fact Keys. I get it mixed up all the time. Yea I figured I missed a ton on first listen! What a GREAT song 🎵
Actually, the Grammy was for "Best Metal Performance". I don't think they give out Grammys for prog metal.
"I wanna hear those big fat double-stops" Showed this song to a few people and I felt like no one really caught that really cool nuance.

Yea!! It's hard to use the word musician about yourself when you hear this lmao! Good comment. Thanks and welcome to the channel!
Did you know they took 2 days to write this song ,memorise it and record . Crazy
2!? That would take me months

No wonder they won GRAMMY with that song.
John Petrucci produces all of their stuff now. Hes incredible behind the console.
Mastered and mixed by Andy Sneap...the dude is a legend.
Great reaction man!! If you want to do more DT, try: Octavarium, Sleeping Giant, A Change Of Seasons or Breaking All Illusions
the main time signature is 17/8 (5,5,7) then it changes through 5/8 , 6/8 and 4/4. maybe more
5 5 7 makes sense. Counting to 17 doesn't tho for western musicians unless they are into tabla and ragas. Thank you for the info!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts ye counting in those groupings is a lot easier than counting from 1 to 17 😂
My favourite Dream Theater Song
You need to check out the rest of the new album!
Reptile by Periphery

I think I can understand what you are saying
If you're into proggy drum stuff, might i suggest:
Haken - Invasion
Leprous - The sky is red
DT are the Kings.

Mangini has a drum cam if this song out
I just wanna clear something its not all guitar solo also some parts are piano solo
Yea my mistake. Hard to tell on first listen and with no visual. What a bad ass keyboard solo! Such a great song
Hi love your reactions! Can you react to all-female Korean Rock band, Rolling Quartz? It would be great to see your take on them. Thanks!
Those were hamster tubes aka Octagons.
John Petrucci playing Guitar was using an 7 string. Real Grungy and Dirty. John Myung, the Bassist has a six string Bass. And he's wild on it.
this song is just 6 string. awaken the master is 8 string 👍
Correction: The 8 string guitar was used only in one song on the latest album and it was in the song "Awaken the Master."
Those were octobons
Try... Ayreon - The Day the World Breaks Down ;)

Music first , video second
They always write music first.
The music was written first for this one.
