Dream theater is one of the most under-rated or under heard rather, progressive rock bands in the last century. They have influenced more drummers, guitarists, singers, bassists and keyboardist, than any other band in our lifetime...yet airplay isn't there. But the fan base is! DREAM THEATER FOREVER
4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1
When their average song is over 8 minutes long, they won’t get airplay.
Dream Theater were fans of the abstract and trippy prog music of Frank Zappa, Yes, King Crimson, etc... but in recent years, they have been taking out current acts that are in the "math metal" category of complex and unusual arrangements - Tesseract, Between the Buried & Me, Animals as Leaders, etc... Bands who are popular w/ the musicianship crowd... "The Alien" sounds like a track that was inspired by those futuristic aspects of the genre. According to Mike Portnoy (ex-drummer of Dream Theater), the band was never about 'showing off' their skills... It was more about challenging themselves musically and keeping it fresh as players and performers. Portnoy said that the band could have played their 1 hit song 'Pull me under' ... but it was boring for him playing it at soundcheck... and performing it repeatedly... They made an effort to keep the song off their setlist and introduce new songs every tour they did, making each tour a unique experience for fans. Mike Portnoy actually quit Dream Theater in 2010 because he had been working w/ the band for 25 years and felt that they were becoming "stale"... He reached a point where he wanted to work w/ other artists and try different things... He started w/ filling in for Avenged Sevenfold... then did the band Adrenaline Mob... and then just worked w/ a number of acts that sounded nothing alike since 2011 - Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, Liquid Tension Experiment... just to name a few. Portnoy even recently played on Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci's solo instrumental album 'Terminal velocity' in 2020 and did a tour w/ his former bandmate. In his lifetime, Jimi Hendrix hated performing sets of his popular songs on tour... So, he kept writing new songs and every time he would tour, the setlist would change because he wanted to do new things every time. Dream Theater have the same collective mentality - keep trying new ways to challenge themselves musically and entertain the fans... Their heroes Rush were the same way, always trying new things to move forward with... Often, it wouldn't work for their popularity, but it made the band happy creatively... Hopefully, their fans would come back to see what they were doing w/ every new record and see the tour.
Hey man, I just heard them play this tonight in Grand Prairie TX. Animals as Leaders and Devin Townsend opened for them. I've seen a lot of shows and tonight was the best "bill" I've ever seen. They opened w/ Alien. It's been out for 2 years now, maybe more or less, but these songs age so well. Legends. Mind you, they're in their late 50's or early 60's
Umm...wow. That's an amazing amount of technical perfection on any stage, and having lived much of my life in Dallas, I must say I can't recall ever seeing a bill so stacked. I can imagine it was mind-boggling.
As with you, I am 150% fascinated and entertained by a wide range of music, and still respect what I might not claim as a favorite. Dream Theater was introduced to me in the 90's and I am in awe of it to this day. Thank you for your detailed description, insight and awesome channel. I appreciate you.
You should definitely check out, Under a Glass Moon by Dream Theater live score 2006. They do one of the most live anticipated performances. Without any doubt living legends and still going full on with 30+ years music career.
I like your vids man, no crazy over the top embellishment, just real and reasonable reactions. If you wanna hear more of dream theater at their best I recommend In the Presence of Enemies Part 1 (and part 2 if you want). You should watch the live version too, they are amazing live and sound exactly like the studio version, it’s honestly insane
I actually had a bit of tears in the double time feel in the first guitar solo upon first hearing. Because I knew Mangini nailed it in this song. Sub’d your channel, cheers.
If you ever get a chance to See them play live, do it!! You still won’t believe it… I’ve seen them 12 times since 1992, and I still don’t Believe it!!!😳
New to the Channel but LONG TIME Dream Theater fan and I love that you’re as captivated by them as I am! I saw them in Cedar Park (Austin) to kick off their Dream Sonic tour last Friday! DT are some of the most humble and true fans of music, even though they are GODS at their craft! Dive deeper into their lyrics of their music and see just how profound and deep they write! It’s just AS great as their playing!
Their keyboard player went to Juilliard when he was 9 years old. Their drummer was teaching at Berklee when he joined Dream Theater and the two guitarists went to Berklee as students.🤘
Polo, what's really amazing is that they can and do play their music live! If I may humbly suggest, check out Illumination Theory ( Live From The Boston Opera House ), you will not be disappointed!
There are bands which aim to show more than an emotion, they wish to take you on a journey. It's super impressive whenever a band succeeds in this, and there's almost nobody better at that than Dream Threater. I will say that there's a severely underrated band called Wilderun that is also incredible at this. I highly recommend The Tyranny of Imagination or Far from Where Dreams Unfurl.
Out of every DT song, this has been the one that has taken the longest to grow on me, and I seem to like it MORE as time goes by. When it first dropped, I was a bit disappointed (I don't even know why!). It just didn't click withe me. But it has become my second favorite on the album (after only Sleeping Giant - what a song!)
So you have now embraced Tool and Dream Theater with multiple listens so it has to be time for some more Porcupine Tree to complete your immersion into the very best of Neo progressive rock. For a different kind of stellar drumming skills check out the Live version of ‘Hatesong’ with Gavin Harrison if full genius mode.
There are a lot of great prog bands but today DT stands alone... as a drummer myself I love the challenge of their entire catalog. Some songs I have down cold but others I dont so that challenge will always continue.
There have been a lot of great bands over the years with a lot of great musicians, but these guys just take it to a whole nother level. Some of them (not sure if all) attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. I saw them for the first time on their Images and Words tour back in the day and have been a huge fan ever since. Best show, though, was probably seeing them open for Yes at Red Rocks!!
Mike met John & John (who were friends in Long Island) at BCOM. They attended for a year back in the mid-80’s. (I believe Mangini was an instructor at BCOM, though much more recently.)
Very cool reaction to this excellent band. Would you please tell me what kind of perpetual motion machine I see in the background? It's awesome and I need to get one!
El Estepario Siberiano wants to show off his skills, and he does it brillliantly. DT shows their skills too, but that is not the goal. The goal of allmost any band in the world is to use the learned skills as good as possible to perfectly replay the musical idea behind the written song, and so does DT. They are simply overwhelmingly good at any aspect of making music. Right now I am practizing to better control my legs/feet for double bass stuff. Althou I never played in a metal band and maybe never will. I need those skills to be able to play the music right. I just want to play our songs as realistic/precise/good as possible. Without technical skills this is impossible. In the end it's allways about the song, not even about the band!
Man, you want complexity and precision? I repeat it here also, make a video on the dance of eternity by DT. The band itself says it is their most complex song and mangini played it at the audition without mistakes that's why they took him 😉
If you haven't, take your guitar in for a professional setup. They're generally not set up well off the wall, and a good setup will make the playability so much better.
I saw them 3 times when they just came out promoting Images and Words. The time complexity, cord changes and super strong vocals, it was and still is memorizing.

Yeah after a million years finally grammy got it right. Imagine few years ago they lost to foo fighters lmao😂
@@ad78 yeah I do like the Foo Fighters but they can't be compared to DT
They should have won Grammys for each album since Images and Words.

Whats wild is that this is one of their newer tracks and they are in their 50s & 60s just crushing hard like this still.
I love how you recognize the nuances and technical prowess of these musicians. certainly they are top notch, great reaction video

Mike Mangini has a drum can practice session of this song. It really is worth a watch. 🤟
Oh, man. That instrument is a Hammond organ with a Leslie turntable speaker.
Whenever your listening to DT and your wondering “ what instrument is that?” It’s usually the keyboards lol
Mike Mangini’s composition is always incredible!
Yes but since after ADTOE it became less incredible, don't know if it is related to the change of drummer 🤔
You should definitely check out, Under a Glass Moon by Dream Theater live score 2006.
They do one of the most live anticipated performances. Without any doubt living legends and still going full on with 30+ years music career.
I LOVE that performance of Under a Glass Moon, even if Petrucci had to overdub the guitar solo in post production.

Before Dream Theatre, there was Rush , as far as musicians flexing their muscles ! Check out 2112 , or La Villa Strangiato live

Mike Portnoy is one of the greatest drummers ever. He and Danny Carey are my favorite prog drummers. He is also the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold.
Portnoy isnt the drummer for A7X, he recorded and album and did a tour when The Rev passed but that was only for about a year.

Now that you have heard dream theater with Mike mangini...listen to some of their older stuff before 2009 with drummer Mike portnoy
How they won a Grammy for this and not for Trial of Tears or At Wit's End is just crazy to me
You gotta listen to “this dying soul” by Dream Theater or “as I am”
I'll give you a great song to react to, get into some "Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing". That song will take you out into the universe and back.
Do a reaction for Mike Mangini Impossible drum Mix.. You'll loose your mind
Fun to count thru the sections with that 17/16 time sig on a relisten 😂 . Just go 5-5-7 or slower, 2r2r3
maybe its still too early to react to Alien but yes, enjoy it man :) but lot of other great songs too from them.. hope u will check out someday

Sleeping giant or a view from atop the world next. Awaken the master has simular energy with this song too.
