Mike Portnoy left the band between 2010 before rejoining in late 2023. This concert was recorded in 2014, so it features Mike Mangini on drums. The Dance of Eternity was released in 1999. If you want to hear the Orchestra and the choir better with the band, listen the song that comes immediately after this one at the concert (Finally Free). If you really want to hear the orchestra with Dream Theater, check out the live version of SIx Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Sacrificed Sons, Octavarium and/or Metropolis Pt 1 from the Score live concert from 2006. Those will have Mike Portnoy on drums as well.
Hey man on your own time check out Green Carnation:Light of Day, Day of Darkness it's one song/album 60 minutes long but it's very progressive metal. Enjoy tha ride 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Since you like "Dance of Eternity" there is a Japanese metal band named Unlucky Morpheus That does a jaw dropping cover of this song. It can be found on the Unlucky Morpheus channel at th-cam.com/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/w-d-xo.html Be warned that there is a short cover of Van Halen's Eruption before they do Dance of Eternity. Unlucky Morpheus is not a cover band. They write their own material. Their lead singer was out for a while, doing another project with another band. Also, their primary writer was on hiatus, so the rest of the band decided to do a half dozen cover songs. The cover songs were very popular and got incorporate into their live offerings.
According to my friend the challenges are very different on them, he wouldn't say either was harder than the other just the challenges are different. I don't personally play drums so i go by what he says.
Actually this not hardest Dream Theater song. But definitely one of them. Drumwise Mangini era has more complicated and advanced drum parts. So drumwise if want you want to find the hardest song, check the Mangini era. For example Enigma Machine, Outcry, Awaken the Master, Pale Blue Dot, Illumination Theory and Breaking All Illusion are really complex. You can check them.
I respectfully disagree about "hardest" but "Breaking All Illusions" and that whole album is absolutely perfection. Same with the Astonishing (Excluding the whole album but there are a lot of Excellent songs).
There are a lot of better songs from songwriting perspective on this album than this one, this is for sure the most technical and weird but not the best at all. When Theresa comes in and the orchestra it's the absolute best. Please keep in mind: They are playing songs they wrote almost 20 years earlier. Their older songs hold up. In fact their 2nd album is probably my favorite one. This song in the context of the whole album also makes a big difference. I can remember the song that leads into it and the one it leads into. This whole album was a 'concept album' it's meant to be listened to consecutively, not by themselves.

This isn’t even close to the hardest song musically. This is about average for them
If you want to hear the orchestra, react to the song "Illumination theory" from the same concert. You will love it!
uuuuuupppp

Liquid Tension Experiment...a side project of Portnoy's with Rudess, Petrucci and Tony Levin. They play Rhapsody in Blue and it's amazing
Not DT's hardest piece, there are quite a few that are much harder. A good example is The Glass Prison.
This is about 60% for them. It's a piece that was part of a story, so it has a function on the metropolis pt 2 album.

I agree. Pneuma is harder than this one to play on drums.
Great choice!
oh come on, I learn Pneuma in 3 hours.
tell me you don't know anything about playing drums without telling me that

Because according to MP it's not a song, it's a mathematical equation 😅
You should watch Yngwi Malmstien with the Japanese Philharmonic.
Check out the band Witherfall. I think you will find it interesting!
There is an earlier version of the song live with Portnoy. This for sure is not their most difficult song.
Open your ears and you can hear it
Man, John Petrucci has 7 strings on his guitar!
You should see him on his 8 string guitar

Actually☝️🤓
Myung said the hardest one for him to play definitely is The Dance Of Eternity
