In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Illumination Theory by Dream Theater. This live version at the Boston Opera House is from 2014. Dream Theater has again exceeded all expectations! What a glorious piece of music!

Most bands have one magnum opus that is the pinnacle of their compositional and musical skill. Dream theater has like 30.
Kansas has a few. One is actually called Magnum Opus.

"I can't do that. And neither can you... probably." The most relatable phrase for any musician who has attempted to learn to play a Dream Theater song.
Very, very short list of humans on this planet who can do what any of these players can do. I can think of maybe 3 or 4 who can hang with Myung or Petrucci, and maybe two who can hang with Jordan. He gets a lot of grief in keyboard circles for "showboating" too much, but kinda part of the showmanship of playing in this band includes playing absolutely absurd parts that leave everyone else slack-jawed and ready to burn their own instruments.
it's both humbling and frustrating to try to play a dream theater song.
The drums aren't that bad.

Nope. Grew up with John, came from same home town, went to Berklee at same time he (they) did and nope, I can't play it.
"He doesn't have much range on that instrument." Jordan changes the key range on the fly so quickly you don't even notice it. It's one of his many wizardry tricks.
Yeah, watch his left hand. He has 2 wheels one for bends/modulation, the other shifts the keys up/down a few octaves depending how far he rolls the wheel.
@@theangryhog It rather looks like the keytar has one pitch wheel, one mod wheel, and two transpose buttons (octave up/down) beside them, which are fairly standard controls on synths; you can see him fiddle with those transpose buttons around 23:05 while playing the same melodic line at different octaves.

I love how on 26:06 James starts to walk towards Petrucci to get a power refill and at 26:15, when he's full of power, he can get back and sing that extremely high note. What a source of power you are Petrucci!
I remember a friend showing me Dream Theater when they released Scenes from a Memory. I'd been super into Nirvana and Metallica, and suddenly I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The real beauty is that they have so many songs as epic as this one, there's nobody else like DT in my opinion

My first encounter with Dream Theater was with a local radio station that played "Pull me under". I was immediately hooked, but they didn't state the name of the band / song. Later i found an online playlist for that respective hour, so i noted down the 5 or 6 songs (i forgot what time it was exactly) and went to a record shop the next day that offered stations where you could listen to CDs before buying. On the 3rd CD i was happy to find what i'd listened to the day before. Bought "Images and Words" and "Scenes from a Memory" on the spot.

Nah he should do the New York live 2000 version. The studio version is too sterile for my liking. Idk if its the production or what. The live versions have much more oomf the them.

TBH that's why I can't deal with Sons of Appolo, with Derek I always hear the same sound and same patterns. I know I am wrong with this, since he's a versatile musician, but that's how I feel with him. So yes - do a live version.

This was magic caught on film. Just imagine being those Berkley Orchestra and choir students...... They've gone to this school knowing that Dream Theater was birthed from Berkley (2 were graduates, and one was a Master Professor of Percussion). And now, they get the chance to share the stage with the ones who paved the way. And not only share the stage, but play some of the most epic songs in their catalogue.
Man, that first symphonic part at 13:10 made me tear up.

I think Doug is hooked. I discovered Dream Theater 20 years ago while I was still a teenager. I’ve seen them many, many times live. I’ve traveled all around the country seeing them play while I was in my twenties. Dream Theater is more than a band. They are the soundtrack to the greatest memories of my life. I know plenty of others feel the same way.
I feel ya. Discovered them in 1992 (I was 20). Have travelled the country as well to see them, LTE, G3 with Petrucci, drum clinics by Portnoy. My one and only tattoo is the majesty symbol on my arm. Just because their music is so vital to who I am, I would rather lose my sight than my hearing. Not that I want to go blind, but you get my point.

To this day, each and every album can just magically teleport me back to the time and place I first heard them (and listened to them obsessively hundreds and hundreds of times)... most of which, starting with Scenes From a Memory, was when they came out.

The conducter was the one who created the Octavarium Symphonic version of the song with the same name. Awesome
He also scored this song as well. Both the actual studio recording and this live version. He was a fan who became a protege of Jordan's and has gone on to do many things with both Jordan and the band.

Every time this man does a reaction video to a Dream Theater Epic, I end up in tears just because it's like I'm hearing the song for the first time again and it's beautiful. Truly is an amazing emotional and spiritual experience.

Yessss. I mean DT got great albums and many of them are masterpiece but I can say Scenes from a Memory is THE ALBUM.
A change of seasons is by far their best song for me, an absolute masterpiece

@@DreiK96 Only because it's dealing with a range of drama from the subtle to the intense. Of course, one section isn't going to have similar themes to another. That's part of life, and the metaphoric Change of Seasons.
11:50 In the modern prog scene, there is a band called Haken. They are inspired from old school prog rock and metal bands such as Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc but they have their very own unique sound. I will recommend the 17 mins long epic track called 'Celestial Elixir' by Haken. I hope you react to it and do an analysis. Big fan here sir!

If C (or more accurately, lower case c) =speed of light, then they ended the song in the metaphorical light they talk about.

Really? I never thought about that. It definitely has a meaning but I'm not if it's about C/speed of light. It might have a different meaning in the bigger picture, like it does in Octavarium (every song in another key etc.)

Since C is the only major scale composed entirely of naturals, it would represent the truest path musically for one to follow.
When I first heard that orchestral part when this song came out I was in a dark place in my life and it really helped me come out of it. I was in a place of darkness and saw the light I suppose. Still one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.

Some of these lines really got me to put things into perspective. We're always hyper-focused on current struggles. And this song really helped me pull back and push forward to make it to a better day. Needless to say, fantastic song.
Illumination theory is a very underrated DT song. Good choice because it's really great.

One of their most underrated (I mean by the band) songs is Learning to Live.
I have no idea why. The lyrics, rhythmically, how it's structured and built, the licks, the instrumental parts and its monumental ending... most bands would give a huge part of their lives to have only one like that.

That is my single favorite song of all time, has been since I first heard it...and it has to be played with Wait For Sleep, since they are essentially 2 parts of the same song (and the WFS motifs appear all over LTL).
Definitely a great song in a 13/8 main motif. Myung’s lyrics are awesome how they made it work even though it made Portnoy upset and for the most part banned him from writing lyrics to any more DT songs like that without a structure I believe but it dissuaded him
For me, James Labrie and Kevin Moore make it for me. James Labrie’s voice was at its peak, and with all due respect to Jordan Rudess, Kevin Moore’s keyboard sound was the best that the band ever had.

Petrucci from 23:10 to 23:50 ... damn. Blistering and blazingly fast, but ANYTHING but mindless shredding. Every arpeggio down to the note is carefully chosen in this whole segment for maximum clarity and musicality. We don't deserve this man. My favorite living shredder.

And a huge Dream Theater fan, and had already before this concert arranged and performed several Dream Theater songs with an orchestra, and was specifically chosen because of this for this gig.
@@chessbrainiac Yes, His name is Eren Basbug, He is a Turk. He made an orchestral cover to Octavarium with his student friends in Music School in Turkey in a conservative classical musical atmosphere and with some financial difficulties. After a while Rudess contacted him thanks to this video.
It's fun to see how as the song goes into the final part you quit breaking it down and start simply enjoying the music. It doesn't mean you cannot enjoy it from the very beginning, it just speaks for the perfection of their stuff. Am I not right?

As someone who only got through music theory2 in college you are my inspiration to get back to the basics and really learn and expand the reading side again! Thank you for all you do!
Seen many many bands live since the early 70s. This band have repeatedly produced the best live performances I've ever seen. They don't really need an orchestra

I always end up in tears when that last section starts those 4 perfect chords. It's amazing to see someone else getting the same joy as I do. Just stunning, life-affirming (musically AND lyrically in this case).
I took my daughter to see the tour for the 'DT' album and this finale was one of the greatest moments of my life, definitely the greatest moment at a gig.
We met JP outside afterwards too and I embarrassed my daughter by totally fangirling 😂

This to me, is the pinnacle for dreamtheater. Amongst many wondrous epics they have created, its my personal favourite. Live as portrayed here well!!!! - its incredible.
FLOWER KINGS, SPOCK'S BEARD, TRANSATLANTIC, MARILLION, BIG BIG TRAIN, PORCUCPINE TREE. GLASS HAMMER...kust to name a dew outstanding bands in the same genre.
I'm always exhausted after listening to a DT epic song.. And it feels amazing! So many emotions and thoughts during it etc.
Haha oh man, at 27:10 when Doug talks about being lifted from the experience 7 years later.... That's spot on. 2014 was my first round of Dream Theater concerts I ever saw. It was absolutely phenomenal.. Seeing them play Illumination Theory and then Finally Free for the encore still give me chills when I think about it. And I got to see them perform twice on the same tour! Once in America and once in Germany. Two of the best times of my life.
Absolutely! Was in the first crowd that ever heard and saw Octavarium played live... still think about it to this day almost 18 years later.
26:44 - Man, Doug I love your appreciation. Just here, we hear as the band and Petrucci put in one of those beautiful, almost cinematic chord changes and I love how Petrucci outlines those changes. This is one of the big attributes that separates Dream Theater from some other musical groups - the ear for the truly 'cinematic' and truly 'epic' that many of us will have been at least partially familiar with because of movies, operatic tunes, etc. There's something very satisfying musically about it all, at least for me.
Jordan Ruddess can do things that regular humans can't being a wizard and all. Ya know the Wizard's union is really hard to get into. Seriously, this piece is absolutely awe inspiring.

I was at this show they recorded this dvd at the Boston Opera House in 2014. Easily one of the top 3 concerts I’ve ever been to in my life. I don’t recall many dry eyes in the house at the end of this song. My girlfriend at the time wasn’t a DT fan at all, but came with me and walked out of there blown away. If you ever get the chance to catch them live, definitely do it. You won’t regret it. You’re right - I often think about how amazing this night was.
And if you’re looking for another suggestion by them - I’d recommend doing the whole Scenes From A Memory album from start to finish. One of the most incredible concept albums ever created.

Great track and I know that this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I have always preferred disc one. It seems many people disagree, but it really seems like the most experimenting they have ever done to me and I love it.
The thing with SDOIT is that the fans like to call it a single song. But aside from certain areas of the whole thing, the individual songs easily stand alone as opposed to the likes of Octavarium and A Change of Seasons for instance.
However... Yes i do agree he should react to the whole thing. But it is likely he would treat it as 8 separate tracks

When they were touring that album I - unusually - still had not bought it and I didn't know the new songs. So when they played Illumination Theory and the wonderful orchestral interlude came with the animation video on the big screen it was like I was hit by a ton of bricks, I was so moved back then that I even shed some tears and even now while I'm writing my eyes get a little watery.
This is my favorite kind of magnum opus dream theater has and hearing this song live is an experience I hope I can one day relive after we get out of our current predicment. Im supposed to see them again in febuary heres hoping that it still happens.

Dream Theater is the most epic band of my lifetime. I saw them live at Oslo Spectrum in January 2020. They played Distance Over Time in it's entirety, then a 15 minute intermission, then they played Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory in its entirety. This was my first Dream Theater show even I have been a fan since they released Images And Words back in 1992. Theis year I was luck and got a premium ticket close to the stage for their show at Oslo Spectrum on November 9th of 2024. I'm happy to be able to see them again this year, can't wait. Once again petitioning for Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, specifically off of the Score album. It's a 42 minute monster, but it's *such* a worthwhile listen to.

Change of Seasons is great, but the ending is a bit weak. This and Octavarium much grander endings.
I couldn't disagree more. I've never seen what people go so nuts for about A Change of Seasons. It's one of the only pieces-and albums-of DT's that I actually _dislike._ IMO you could literally throw a dart at DT's entire catalog and have a near 100% chance of hitting something better. I even like Falling Into Infinity more, and that was _weird._
Their true masterpiece, and I know it gets a ton of hate for reasons passing my understanding, is The Astonishing.

how I'd always see it is as life lessons that share some essential knowledge with religious teachings. The problem can be when someone uses them to manipulate the masses to their own benefits.

I remember when I first heard this song. I was so amased that I started to search about everything related to the song.
Then I found an interview of Petrucci about it. He said that the orchestral part of the song was his request to Rudess to compose the most beautiful AND kind of sad orchestral piece.
In the studio record, after the end of the song, there is some more composition. I also remember that Petrucci wanted to put this part like some kind of relaxation, because the song demands so much attention of the listener.
I think all of that was about 7 years ago, but I remember until today.
