Great Video! love building small Fords. you hit on a couple of key points to look for in building a Small block Ford. the head gasket placement(water holes always to the back!), head bolts/studs need sealant on the lower(exhaust) row, oil pump drive shaft check for seating & use the spring washer correctly. I don't now if flipping an offset piston really works in a mild engine but it wont hurt anything. couple things I do whenever i build a 289/302 now: 1. Use that exact oil pump if the engine will see some revs, I really like the doweled cover & the support for the rotor that goes through the cover plate. also you can adjust the oil relief spring for pressure. 2. Tap the front oil galleries for pipe plugs 3. have the decks surfaced - remember these things are 20-40 years old and have seen so many head cycles! lower side tends to sink and having fresh surfaces is worth the $150-$180 to deck it. also good for compression ratio which is tough to get with a short stroke engine. 4. if you need a decent replacement piston, the Speed Pro L2488F is nearly a replacement without that little dish - has a tall compression height & the metric(thinner) ring pack. have had good luck with them. 5. front damper - the 50 oz in un balance cranks won't ever be as good as a 28 oz but for under 6500 they will last a while. the good damper does help as the factory style rubber ring types will fail over time and once that outer ring spins its going to hurt itself quickly. I be this thing runs really well - that cobra cam doesn't have much overlap so running on SD should be ok. the extra airflow from the heads & intake may need more fuel but shes going to run well!!!!

For example, a crank scraper can be fabbed for a dollar or less and will also add some power at higher RPMs. I'd also add, the camshaft is easier to install if you do it first. stand the block up on its bellhousing, let gravity help out, and you can reach into the crankcase to guide it when the reciprocating assembly isn't in the way. And torquing down fasteners or removing stuck ones might be easier if one stands on the engine stand to keep it from running away.

It’s not hard just expensive and if you are planning on using a stock block fairly volatile, dart block and 360 or so cubic inches make it more feasible, if you don’t wanna spend 15k look into a 408 Windsor, 500 hp still isn’t easy with stock stuff but you won’t have to have crazy cam, heads and high end stuff to make 500 reliably

Thanks man. That video took forever. Lol
@@Neomustangs Lol 🤣 all my videos take forever. The editing just chews me up and spits me out time wise🤦🏼♂️
love that budget built motor, it would be exactly what im looking to put into my 89 GT. would love to know how much would you chagre for this type of motor if you even considered building to sell? i live in CT and would drive to pick up so shipping would not be required
Yes
Video was not long enough but we take what we can ...thx for finding the time to share .
Yw. ?
All of your recorded knowledge about Foxbody mustangs is never gonna enough for us guys who are new to the foxbody game and come here to your channel to absorb all of the knowledge ....I mean foxcast...brew2L...TIP..gearhead704..
5.0tossin..have a lot of technical content but you're a bit more detailed in my opinion.... All of the other channels are very good in their own right but there are only certain people that have the gift to teach and reach ppl and you my friend are one of them ..so thank you.
What u gap your top and 2nd rings at

Solid budget combo there, great video brutha!
Right on thanks for popping in caleb!
Im about to start building a 5.0 for a ranger swap. Im getting the engine from an f150. Are there any noticable differences between the f150 and mustang motor internally?
Do you have a good build recipe for a 400-ish hp n/a motor?
Stroker motor
I've been following you for yrs finally subbed. Great work!
Did the cobra cam work with SD eec? Planning to do that cam for my SD coupe
Yes
Degree the cam!!! You were right there...
Hey neo would 30lb injectors be to big for stock bottom end with world sr heads and trickflow intake and lunati cam it’s runnin Rich
Yes.
@@Neomustangs thanks man
Do the pistons have to be flipped on the rods or can you swap the piston rod combo to the other bank?
Nevermind, I just had to watch a while longer. Looks like I can just flip the piston/rod combos to the other bank.
Wait i have a 99 explorer with the 5.0 in it, is the intake and throttle body off an explorer 5.0?
Yes
Awesome build I have a question I took out my spark plugs and it had a little bit of oil on the threads
Might Be a little blow by on the piston rings. It’s probably nothing
Piston rings?
Ya it’s probably nothing tho
Ok cool thanks
I’m looking forward on building something like this!! Where do I get the parts so I can build under 1000?
Summit racing, jegs, Resto sites.
What harmonic balancer did you use? Great video!
Trickflow
What’s the reason for putting the pistons pointed to the rear vs front
Didn’t I explain it in the video ?
Pretty awesome little horse buddy! 👍💪 pony power!
Ty !
Just curious what numbers you saw naturally aspirated?
Definitely interested in swapping the pistons around. I grasp to concept but could you tag the video where you get more in depth?
Are the stock rods and crank just cast
Could you possibly make a list of part numbers and where you got them from for all the gaskets and all
I have a small list at the end. No part numbers.
Can u run 1.7 rockers on a 302 and the valves not hit
Yes
Thank you very much
Do the flipped pistons need to be new or do the used originals not get used to torqueing in a certain direction like axles will?
Oem only. Aftermarket doesn’t have that offset I don’t believe
@@Neomustangs I guess what I was trying to ask is if used oem pistons and rods will suffer a failure if moved to a cylinder where they are reversed in direction or do you need to buy new pistons? I know some parts will snap if reversed, like drive shafts.
@@Neomustangs some do
@@T0tenkampf no problem
any porting of the cylinder head?
None
this is pretty much what i want to do on my 5.0 explorer. You think the cobra cam would run fine on a stock explorer ecu map?
Yes
We’ll Dannie…all I have to say is, another great video to add to the lineup!!! 🎯🔥✅💯
Do you have a link to where you got the cam and part number?
Thx man.
Damn I’ve built a couple of these myself and watched countless videos this is the first I’ve ever seen of flipping the pistons like that. Pretty interesting.
Yes sir
Flipping pistons is a old trick Mopars and Fords have the same offset and it can be done one those engines
@@79tazman yep
@@79tazman yea that’s pretty awesome any other videos you watch on building a sbf they make sure to tell you always always make sure the dots go to the front. Ima have to try this next time I put one together. I’ve never had anyone teach me anything just learned it on my own and by reading and of course TH-cam lol.
Isn't the cobra cam smaller than the regular HO cam ?
No
Nice job. Gives me lots of ideas for my 82 GT survivor car when the motor needs help.
Thx
How much power is left on the table using a stock cobra cam vs say a tfs 1?
It’s speed density. It wasn’t an option for me and this build atm. It’s not about how much power more than power vs stock parts
Hey I really appreciate what you do! Your videos got me started on looking for a fox body 5.0 for my 1962 Flareside. I was wondering if you’ve ever broke one of these blocks, and if so roughly how much power was it making?
600 wheel and yes it broke cause of bad timing or being greedy with it lol
Awesome Video as Always Bro! Love the Stock Bottom End stuff.
Thx man
I built a similar setup for my fox. Gt40ps trickflow intake, compcam upgraded springs, rrs etc. Made pretty good power na
Ya
If you really want to get budget throw on gt40p heads and a b cam lol. Drop in a gt40 intake from an exploder and let er eat
@@phileickmeyer2493 that’s my combo in my coupe , explorer long block b cam p heads with Alex drop in springs , long tubes .
@@phileickmeyer2493what the whp like? I’m thinking promaxx heads, Steeda 18 cam, and trick flowintake or ported cobra. Hoping for 300whp. I already have a cobra intake and was told when ported they outflow a trickflow?
How hard is it to make 500 HP N/A? A 1987 thru 1993 5.0 liter engine.
I have seen some radical 347 strokers tickle 500 at the flywheel but you will be hard pressed to find a 302/306 making those kind of numbers without a power adder. Check out Richard Holdener's channel he has some great small block Ford engine builds for all horsepower levels
@@88TRUNKBACK If I had stage 3 ported Canfield race heads, a stage 3 ported Holly systemax intake to match the heads also its ported for a 75mm throttle body, 75mm throttle body, Z-303 Ford racing cam and all the supporting mods also its a 306ci 9.5:1 compression. What kind of HP should that make? I'm asking because I had that setup and the car ran pretty good but I ended up selling the car and I never did take it to a Dyno to find out how much power it made.
Right
@@paulmills426 I’d expect 320 wheel hp 390 crank if tuned right, the valve size/angle probably limited cam size back then, them heads wanted way more than a z cam, Canfield was no joke, twisted wedge just like aka made along side tfs, just put together with more love and many times better parts.
Good content. I want to do a foxbody soon. I have access to a full 99 explorer 5.0 motor . Should I pull it and keep it or just grab the heads and intake
Get whole motor.
@@Neomustangs ok. That's what I though but haven't done a lot on the 302 motors. Mostly worked on ls stuff here and there.
Anything else I should take from the donor vehicle?

Was there anything done to the P heads besides springs? Bowl blend or short side radius? Love the budget builds!
No
Do you run amsoil and best line engine oil additives? I run these products in my 2015 Ford fiesta and love it I feel the difference and saves me on fuel JS seeing is believing God bless from Canada eh!
What valve springs did you use?
@neomustangs what turbo do you normally run on these stock 302s?
70
Wow. I’m pretty sure torque specs on stock 302 5/16 rod bolts are 19-24. I wonder how much, if any it distorted the rod. I know aftermarket bolts torqued to 35 will, and just about always have to be resized.
Had no issues.
Your work is always quality. Thanks. By the way, what color of blue is your dads fox?
Ford sonic blue
