Videos breaking down what actually makes one move so good are a cool idea. It's something you learn intuitively by playing the game enough, yet made easy to understand for those who haven't
@@counterpicky right, falcon upair just **feels** good to me because it's fast, denies airspace, and has good knockback scaling, but it's something people don't really talk about.
Really amazing video! One other part that wasn’t covered: due to Falcon’s amazing aerial drift, not only does he get the option to overshoot really far with up airs, but he also gets the ability to retreat. Doing a dash forward drift forward SH up air to catch an opponent on platform is great, but if they call it out, they can shield punish the endlag. Falcon can mitigate this by doing a dash forward into drift back instant up air, which both covers the platform in front of you while also moving away from your opponent during the end lag of the attack.
This video made me think about how the Captain has a bad matchup vs. Fox and Falco partially because their short hops are so low, and they don't need to jump as far into vulnerable airspace in order to attack him with aerials
Cool video! Although I have to admit I clicked because I thought the thumbnail was falcon's getup attack and was ready to have my mind blown somehow. Upair makes a bit more sense
Definitely noticed the huge difference between Wizz and aspiring falcon players before him (aside from chain grabs and tech chases) this guy is ALWAYS using his up air, even inches from the ground just to try to scoop and attempt to pop his opponent up for more aerial punishment.
I've always wondered why everyone played so grounded against Cap Falcon. I was how does he get his neutral b if melee is a platformer with emphasis on jumping? You learn something new all the time with this game. Thanks for the vid
@AlanTheNoob ganons up air has a third hitbox after the first two that hits almost entirely behind him and sends at a down and away angle (semi-spike) people call it the tipman
absolutely loved this video. would be really cool to see a series of videos like this covering what makes certain moves so good/central to a characters gameplan
This is a great video! I'm a puff player who's been subpar at the falcon matchup, and this helped me understand it even better! I always knew I needed to play more grounded but it was never explained to me in this way
@@andrewferguson6901 in the video he reads the numbers off smashwiki which are very far from the whole story. Falcon's dash-jump momentum is far faster than his terminal airspeed and this is never mentioned.
Amazing video mate, love this type of analysis, think it'll be really helpful and engaging to the community! Can't wait to see more, keep it up chief and set up a patreon or something
I legit think falcon beats puff in this meta. He's one of the only characters that can challenge her in the air and he can consistently kill her at insanely low percents like fox and marth can. All she really has on him is her edge guarding but falcon deals with that in every mu
Analyzing stuff like: "This player made this neutral decision x times because of this, on this other situation y times" its so underrated and useful info
What I like to do against it is fake going to platform and fast fall through, baiting them to approach with up air If they do it’s pretty easy to punish on reaction
@@artminer6 That's just cause the top players aren't doing it properly. Falcon is number 5, maybe number 4 tied with sheik. Falco is number 6, maybe even 7 with yoshi at 6. Mango is simply a God God. Quality content. I think it would cover even more space on plat if you were to RAR falcon's UAir too. Only big issue is shield drop which is tough to play around regardless.
RAR ain’t in melee but I feel the sentiment - closest we can get is moonwalk uair or a super tight pivot max drift up air - if RAR was in melee this would be a perfect game

yeah lets pretend that falcon actually counters puff and ignore wizzy only started to win vs hbox back in 2019 with the score being heavily hbox favored from there and backwards
This viewpoint is too narrowed in on data and ignores applicability. Yes, falcon's speed is a large part of what makes him viable in the first place, but being fast by conventional game standards doesnt matter once you consider movement tech in general (wavedashing, wave-landing, aerial cancling, character-specific movement tech, etc). If you line every character up and press right on the left stick, yes he'll move fastest, but how often in melee are you running in a straight line? Second, he ignores the fact that its an aerial attack. Shine (unarguably the best move in the game), is a 1 FRAME MOVE, and can be used anywhere at any time, standing, in air, etc. Falcon has to jump and use his move with enough frames and the proper spacing to even get any value out of it at realistic %'s (not to mention u-air at 0% isnt going to help you at all, for example). Moves like shine get guaranteed value at all %'s, and you dont even need to jump for them. And lastly, he doesnt consider the move in context to the character. Even if falcon is the fastest character, and even if his u-air was somehow the best move in the game, those attributes are attached to a heavy character with an otherwise somewhat limited moveset, and notoriously terrible recovery. Game and Watch's 9 hammer, Roy's charged neutral, Gannon's neutral special... all amazing moves, but yet they are all bottom tier. This video had too much of a directed narritive to be objective.
I haven't played melee competitive in years, but i still watch tournaments and all that type of content and i want to say good video man, it's educative and fun to watch, keep doing shit like this man
Fiction played Sheik at Big House 11 for fun, and made a tweet about wizzy "air wobbling" him. I didn't understand it completely at the time, but I can assume he meant Wizzrobe stuffed out his platform movement with up-air. Denying his game plan and finding easy stocks. great video 👍
Only melee players could come up with such a stupid name, which is coincidentally the name of a true infinite in the same game, for basically playing sound, zoning and punishing movement accordingly
This is a pretty fascinating video! I always like thinking about how people's playstyles change in response to different characters, so this is a very informative video to me.
shield drop can usually counterplay it though and then you can faint like you will jump and bait out an up air and anti air it. I guess it fits title cuz it "redefines" the MU to an extent don't make it sound like it's unbeatable and platforms are useless. Point out flaws in future vids
Great video! Falcon's sharking below platforms is something I've also noticed is strong, but never thought to delve deeper into the whys beyond "yeah it covers most of the platform" I hope you make more videos like this dissecting specific moves! A video about Sheik or Marth's moves would be really cool!
It is cool how you can very clearly see hbox going over or under that space around the side platforms height where short hop upair from falcon covers. Nuts
Nice video! I think most regular melee players sort of understand the threat of Falcon's up air intuitively, but you did a great job explaining it in words. The example sets you chose were really excellent as well, I liked that you demonstrated how the counterplay can be actually be seen and measured, rather than just picking a set where some Falcon goes crazy juggling someone
Captain Falcon as far as I've seen him in every Smash Bros game I've ever played vs him is a monster in the air...he's usually a major cheese champion in For Glory back when I used to attempt this. I've moved on mostly to other fighting games but if I get back into Smash bros again I'll keep this in mind.
Except Ganon doesn’t have the same threat range that falcon does. If falcon had Ganons up air though, that would be a different story. Although it might make combos worse for falcon at higher percents
