  • There is the .45-70, .460 S&W Magnum, .500 S&W Magnum and whatever else down to just .327 Federal Magnum or .22LR. However, we are not going to look at these mostly revolver cartridges. We will focus on the ones made for rifles. This includes the .45-70, but also the .300 Savage as well as the .30/30 Winchester

A Marlin 336 chambered in a .35 Rem was my first deer rifle, given to me as a gift from my uncle Louis, As a woods rifle in the Catskills, it served its purpose and was accurate as heck with hand loads, sub 2moa@100yds with a 1.25 X Weaver scope. It will stay with me and then passed down as time goes on.

Killed my first deer, a doe back in 1967 with a Marlin 336, chambered in .35 Remington. It still rests in my safe today, albeit semi-retired in favor of rifles with much higher velocities. Still, the .35 Remington more than holds its own whenever it gets the call.

the 300sav is a great round if used within its ballistic capabilities. I was surprised that the 308win was not mentioned when it came to the Model 99 Savage. @laurogarza4953 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good job. 45-70, 30-30 Winchester and 300 Savage are all fine selections. The 22 Savage Hi-Power, developed in 1899, if I am not mistaken, was also a very forward thinking cartridge that took maximum advantage of the brilliant Edward Savage's equally forward thinking design. It's performance, similar to that of the much later developed 223 Remington, was a ideal for the outdoorsman who carried his rifle in a saddle scabbard like my grandfather who was a "Vaquero Completo" in south Texas. That, coupled with his Colt SAA in 32-20 Winchester, prepared him to take south Texas game from Cottontails to Whitetails and all else in between.

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Indeed it was a very forward thinking cartridge. The .22 Savage High Power, .250-3000 Savage (.250 Savage) and .300 Savage were developed by Charles Newton. Savage introduced the rifles, specifically the Model 99.
Savage wanted to offer bolt action level performance, pointed bullet compatibility which was gaining interest in the early 1900s, in lever action rifles which had been popular for decades. The Model 99 action allowed him to do that. The Winchester Model 1895 also did that, but with a much larger and heavier rifle with a protruding box magazine. The Model 99 was lighter, shorter and handier to carry with an internal magazine.
The .300 Savage was designed to duplicate the military equivalent ballistics (at the time) of the .30-06, which it did.
The .250-3000 was the first cartridge to offer the blazing speed of 3000 feet per second.
For whatever reason, the .22 Savage High Power was made with .228" diameter bullets, rather than the .223" diameter bullets and that forever crippled it and led to it's demise.
Winchester later made a nearly identical cartridge called the .219 Zipper that used .223" bullets. But, by the time they introduced that cartridge in the Model 64 lever gun, bolt rifles had caught on with hunters and the Model 64 (a Model 94 variant) never had the accuracy or ease of scope mounting to attract varmint shooters.

Especially for the re-loader. 158 grain .357 pistol bullets can be loaded for light plinking to save the shoulder. In an emergency, I'll bet with care, even 147 grain 9mm bullets will get on paper at 40-50 yards. I know for a fact .308 brass can be necked up and used as well. :) The only disadvantage for the BLR is mag capacity. (4 + 1). But a spare ($75) mag can provide a quick extra 4 rounds.

What about some love for the 348 Winchester? Not popular but effective. A 200 grain bullet at 2500 fps makes a pretty effective close range weapon. Just never took off.

This did not include the 35Rem. Which I feel is a great all around cartridge. I run the Hornaday 200 grn. FTX. This is a very accurate round with plenty of take down power. It doesn't tare up a deer but also strong enough for Bear. This is my go to round in a leaver action rifle. The Marlin model 36.

I do like the Marlin 336’s in 30-30 but if you art on a somewhat tight budget, the 1895 CBA Marlin in 45-70 is the best choice. Sensitive to recoil? No problem, buy some Remington 405 grain a mellow round, or the HSM Cowboy rounds. If you can only afford one lever gun, the 1895 45-70 is the way to go. You can hunt any game in the world with this caliber in a lever gun. I have a Remington made 1895 CBA and it is an excellent and tough as nails dependable lever gun. Find a Remington made Marlin, better quality true to 1895 authenticity, and the price is half of the new Ruger version. Remington cared about the average Joe with an average wallet and priced their high quality lever guns accordingly. Remington came out with many models in a short amount of time. They really cared about their customers.

People would say negative things about Remington Marlin’s mostly J.M. Marlin fans. The only less than excellent Remington made Marlin’s are the ones before 2016 when they were still using the inherited J.M. parts. Starting in 2016 Remington made their own re engineered parts on brand new CNC machines and were the best Marlin lever guns ever made or will ever be made by anyone. Think 1960’s Remington BDL’s in 30-06? Remington makes beautiful, tough, and accurate firearms.Remington was the first to make their chamber receivers out of solid block steel billet, instead of like J. M. Marlin’s which were machined.

My old reliable Lever Action is my Marlin 336BL in 30/30. Since covid - it’s taken about 2.5 years to find a steady supply of 150gr. Had there never been a scamdemic I’d surely have gotten a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with the Big Loop lever, but hunting rounds are scarce lately & very salty (expensive)…

The 444 Marlin should definitely be listed in this review. It hits like a bulldozer and does have the brutal bullet drop of the 45-70 which shoots as flat as rolling a bowling ball off a garage roof.

Any chance you can compare the 38-55 ballistics to the 375 Win ballistics? They're both straight walled cartridges that use the same diameter bullets, but the 38-55 case is a little bit longer than the 375 Win case. I've searched on TH-cam and I can'tchannel,

This is a discussion of what you want, vs what you need.
People like variety. Some thing new AND something tried and true. Most people given the ability will have several guns to “play with” but one or two they depend upon in some way. This is generally healthy psychologically speaking.
Then there is what you need. Weather just hunting or going to war you can only carry one gun. It has to do the job. First time. Every-time. We each define “the job” and equip accordingly. Once selected, you tend to dance with the one you brought to the dance.
I enjoyed your review but will stick to my guns, which you may pry from my cold dead fingers. Most likely due to old age at this point.
    Fox out.

We have an old Marlin 30-30. On the farm (very large acreage) in SW New York, we have more notches than forearm grip left for dear its taken. She has a Redfield 3x9x40 (known as a poor mans Leopold) and most shots are 100yds or under. Good and safe on a tractor or in the truck, just rack and load. Wood chuck, coy dog we hand load a 115gr. Spitzer but only 1 at a time....never in the tube the points could set off a primer. WAAPP !!!.....another wood chuck down. If you know your gun like I do if shes in the cross hairs its dead first shot.
