You just earned another subscriber. My dad's old lever action Marlin 30-30 was the first big boy's rifle (non-.22) that I ever shot, and I loved that gun. I took my first few deer with it before I "upgraded" to a .270. I love the fact that another company is carrying the torch for that model's aesthetic, and is actually doing a good job of it for a change. I may have to pick up one of these. The curved pistol grip and slightly looped lever is perfect, and the fact that it's all stainless and laminate (and thereby weatherproof, as long as you take care of it) is just amazing. And the fact that it's a 45-70 instead of a 30-30 is honestly even better. That's become one of my favorite rounds. I don't mind the recoil, and they will definitely reach out and touch something as long as you understand the ballistics and ask nicely. This looks like a great gun

They've brought the Marlin name back to what it was when it was truly Marlin. I had a Marlin 30AW in the 80's and early 90's and it was awesome. It was so smooth and a tack driver. I hated having to sell it when I got orders to England in 1996. Didn't have someone I could trust to keep it for me at the time. I have a Remington built Marlin 336 now and while it's fun, it's not as good as my AW. I look forward to getting my hands on a Ruger made 1895, I've always wanted a 45-70. It's a Thumper!

New sub here. I owned an original Marlin for 50 years, here in AR. I bought it in like new condition, adding my 1903 Springfield to lower my cash requirement! I used it on uncountable numbers of our smallish deer as well as feral hogs! The micro-groove barrel really liked the Winchester 315 grain loading, and the beauty of that selection was what it did to game. They always died properly, never running more than 50 yds., +/-, their internals in ruins!
Now retired from pursuits afield, I'll pass the rifle and scope to my Colorado nephew, perhaps it'll add several elk to its' imaginary notches!?

@@tortol4847 I’m thinking all gun manufacturers right now are producing limited quantities to keep prices inflated. They want demand to outstrip supply. They can make same or more profit than when in full production and less wear and tear on their production machinery. Economics 101.

I have a Marlin 1885 GS and used it to walk the beaches in Alaska. Using Remington 405 grain almost exclusively, but never having to shoot in self defense. The cartridge is loud going off, but the recoil is really mild, it's rolling thunder. If you see bear up north (Alaska Brown's) you will know it's the best defense to have. So I applauded the copy of the Marlin, I know it is a gun you can shoot all day, comfortably

My rifle just has the ghost ring peep sight I installed, but maybe one day I'll mount a scope to see what I can truly get out of it for accuracy and range. It's a hoot taking long shots at rocks, at ranges lever guns aren't traditionally thought capable of. Believe it or not the 45-70 long held, a long range record established many decades ago. Was just watching Ottawa 2022 C19 trucker protest videos, now I’m being recommended gun reviews? Why do I feel like I’m all of a sudden on a watch-list, and this is *_clearly_* entrapment? Hi Mom! I’m on TV!! WOOOOO!!! (That last bit was my Rick Flair impersonation, for those of you who are old enough to know who that is)

I have owned a Ruger lever action carbine in .45-70 for decades. Ripping loose high velocity 300gr jacketed hollow points is a great experience. Being more of a traditionalist, I like the V-notch rear and gold bead front.
I also like those sights on my Winchester 1886. When I can't get the job done with those, it will be time to pass them on to my son.

A very fine review!! I really like to stretch the shooting distances on all my rifles, iron sights and scopes to find out what the gun/barrel will really do. Plus, it tweaks my own shooting styles and weaknesses. I have been praying would make such a quality gun in 45-70. I don't know which old timer said it, "but if you can stand being embarassed, take your loads to paper'. Peace to all.

I got a late production Remlin (when they where trying to improve quality control but it was too late) that doesn’t have the finish problems you pointed out. However, one thing that let me down is the finish on metal parts that you can only see when you disassemble the gun. The tool marks on the lever mechanism are huge!

If Brian’s example of a Ruger made Marlin 1895 is this good... what is the rest of their production going to look like! I’m willing to bet these will be extremely smooth shooters.

Great side-by-side review! I'm happy to hear that Ruger is doing with Marlin what most people believed they would. I put off purchasing a new .357 lever action when I learned that Ruger had purchased Marlin. But nobody should have to pay gunbroker prices. I'm really hoping to see the new 1894s come out this year. But if it turns out that the only place to find them is gunbroker I'll be purchasing a Henry from my LGS.

Had a JM Marlin 1894 in .357 that was just gorgeous. Sold it for an insane profit, then bought a Remlin 1894 in 2017 and could not believe just how bad it was. Spent money and time trying to get it reliable, but gave up and sold it. Replaced it with a Henry Black. Much better.
Hard to believe that some folks still think that the Remlins are just as good as the JM Marlins.
So thankful that the reviewer is intelligent enough to recognize the clear differences in quality between this new Ruglin and the aforementioned abominable Remlins. Looking forward to Ruger releasing the "new" 1894 and hopefully some tactical versions for those of us who use lever guns the way they were intended; on the trail and in the woods.
