He should be invited to RUPaul’s Drag Race. He can meet the queens in the work room as him, and they guest judge as Chi Chi. Why hasn’t this happened?!?!?!
It's heartening to see just how much respect and work he put into Chi-Chi. It was really the height of acting because at no time was I thinking: That's John Leguizamo in a dress. There was JUST Chi-Chi. :)
This film doesn't get the credit it should - and don't even get me started on how criminally overlooked these performances were. To Wong Foo is far from realistic, but it created a drag fairytale that inspired SOOOO many people (myself included). For most actors - especially at that time - these three queens could have been interpreted as stereotypical caricatures. It's astonishing to see the heart and soul all three infused into truly fleshing them out. The entertainment industry has always loved men in dresses, but To Wong Foo was the first time they took a risk and portrayed the depth that lies underneath the pancake makeup and the synthetic hair. They weren't straight guys going for the cheap laughs. Some of that can be credited to their shadowing with many iconic queens of New York at the time - and they felt they had a responsibility to do real queens justice. And the screenplay? I'm still finding new references I hadn't understood each previous time. Absolute brilliance all around.
I was 8 when this came out. And I didn’t completely understand it. But it was my absolute favorite movie. And still to this day, The greatest film ever made.
Agree. The same can be said with Priscilla Queen of The Desert, which came out a year before this. I saw both of these in a special screening prior to the debut theatrical release, and the overwhelming majority of positive reviews simply banished all those stereotypical views. Both movies have definitely became cult classics and new followers every year.
@@giamarie6966Absolutely. The battle between _To Wong Foo_ and _Priscilla_ is right up there with _The Addams Family_ vs. _The Munsters_ - there will always be a debate surrounding which is better. But the two films are very different in that one is much more gritty and realistic _(Priscilla)_ and the other is _the_ drag queen fairytale (literally - watch the "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" scene and tell me those aren't _Sleeping Beauty's_ three Good Fairies). So debating is rather pointless. What's truly astounding is that _neither disrespects drag._ I'm a professional drag queen about to celebrate my 30th year since I started. Anyone that can do basic math can easily see why both those movies had a great impact on me. And it's also given me a lot of time to discover how the film portrays my world. Every retrospective I see on these films typically opens with a statement of how daring it was for the films to be made when they were, but anyone that was alive back then and paying any attention to pop culture can recall that drag culture was very much having a moment back then: RuPaul had become a household name just two years prior with "Supermodel" in heavy rotation on MTV. Just as she is now, Miss Charles was an astute, articulate person that was charismatic enough to not only capture people's attention, but the real secret to her success was that she scrubbed herself of anything that could come across as threatening. She was the Disney-fied drag queen few people could find fault in. She always made it perfectly clear that she was just "a big ol' black man" underneath all of the dazzling rhinestones, but while she had their attention, she schooled them as well. That gave her carte blanche to conquer literally every facet of the entertainment industry. What was stunning was that while every star in film, TV, and music seemed to have an expiration date, RuPaul's appeal kept her relevant longer than most celebrities - and that's not even mentioning her stunning re-emergence in 2009 with _RuPaul's Drag Race,_ which would lead her to becoming the most decorated person of color in Emmy's history. Read that a few times and ponder how insane that fact is. What many may _not_ realize is that RuPaul's success had ripple effects that brought success to many other queens of the time as well, most based out of New York City. The most obvious is The Lady Bunny, whose annual Wigstock festival drew tens of thousands, but there are so many others that have become icons in their own right: Varla Jean Merman, Miss Coco Peru, Candis Cayne, Honey Dijon, Miss Understood, Sweetie, Lypsinka...and so many more. So yes, while everyone now considers the "Drag Race" drag's "golden years," there was a lot of drag that permeated every part of pop culture in the 90's. And when _To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar_ finally cast the three leads, director Beeban Kidron was smart enough to pair each of the three leads with _actual_ drag queens. This no doubt gave the three actors an entirely different perspective on how to portray Vida, Noxeema, and Chi-Chi. Where lesser actors would likely have played everything strictly for laughs, the "ladies" of _To Wong Foo_ were handled with the deepest of respect because working with actual queens in preparation for the film made them realize there is a lot of humanity in drag - a humanity that everybody can relate to once they make it past the sequins, synthetic hair, and pancake makeup. But where Patrick Swayze in particular nailed it was in the _how_ and _why_ of drag that simultaeously magnifies and hides the more painful pieces of each drag queen's puzzle. There's a variance in depth to each of the three, but each fit something of an archetype most drag queens can spot in their own "sisters." You have Vida, the more mature queen that's hesitant to show her potential for aggression until it's too late. You have Noxeema, who's jaded and rarely shows more emotion than can be tossed out with razor-sharp wit. And then there's Chi-Chi, the young queen with dangerous naivete who still pouts when admonished. If the goal of acting is for one to entirely disappear within a character, each of the three deserved much more recognition. But of the three, Vida Boheme should have won that man an Oscar. Patrick Swayze disappeared into Vida while also giving what felt like a genuine glimpse into a world he'd never quite experienced himself. And _that_ is truly extraordinary.

The movie wouldn’t have worked if they didn’t take their characters seriously. But all three of them went way above and beyond, and that’s why it’s aged like a fine wine.
Wow. That was so insightful what John said! I have been watching this movie for YEARS, I love this movie, but I thought the reason why her foundation was so bad is because it has always been hard for people of color to find our proper foundation shade. I mean, drug store foundation brands carried 5 different shades for the past 60 years. Anything deeper than 'dark beige' seemed to be nearly impossible to find. I had NO idea her foundation color was apart of Chi-Chi-s character development! Wow!
When John was talking about the face make-up and Latin Culture he was so right, it gave Chi Chi much more depth. He is truly an Artist, and I didn't think his Arc was that small at all, after all She's the reason for the road trip.
Chi Chi was my absolute favorite, i knew it was him but I couldn’t even recognize Leiguizamo the actor; and I totally loved that they recognized the light shade of foundation lol that last scene with ChiChi winning Queen was like a bow on a gift it was great to see. So much respect to him as an actor!
I watched this film twice last night and I was so amazed and how nuanced it was. Perhaps not the most realistic depiction of drag queens - but it needed to show them in that element. What a great piece of art.
I disagree! I think they were superb renditions of what it is to be a drag queen. More for that 90s era though rather than today, because then you’d be right lol. I did it for a brief period when I was younger but had to stop. I feel like most queens today confuse fabulousness with viciousness. The foundation for what it means to be a queen is completely missing. Vida was the perfect role model for a young queen.

Wesley Snipes was in school for theater arts, this makes sense to me now. Actors who came up as theater students are more likely to do all kinds of roles- universal rolls- hence him in drag in To Wong Foo. Wesley Snipes was in school for theater arts, this makes sense to me now. Actors who came up as theater students are more likely to do all kinds of roles- universal rolls- hence him in drag in To Wong Foo. John Leguizamo is a passionate dramatic arts actor as well so I wasn’t surprised he did that roll as well. 💜👌🏼 Not just any actor could do that. And they did a damn good job!
I watched this bfr Rupaul Drag Race... Glad to know this first it was life changing for me to be more accepting and loving my self
WE ALL LOOOOVE CHI CHI❤❤❤
This movie was epic !!!! To take the sexiest man in the world at that time and turn him into Vita ... was phenomenal.... to take the top Action Man at that time and go from ... The Daywalker to Knoxxy was genius.... and to take one of the top comedians at that time and make Chi Chi ..... together .... they made a MASTERPIECE !!!
omg
