No man will ever be as much a woman as Patrick was in this movie. Grace and elegance embodied..

“Maybe we’re losing some of our narrow mindedness.” I teared up then, oh hun, we’ve come right back full circle. Sadly. But good that you didn’t get to know that. 😢

Anybody who ever saw this movie it was a hilarious film from start to finish. Definitely a classic! Probably one of Patrick Swayze's better films believe it or not.

I love how he said that he hopes this opens up some narrow minds! He was taken too soon from us, but I’m sure he’s dancing looking down on his family.

I just loved him so much. Still do! It’s in the moments that we’re not meant to see when he was being so nice to this woman! He is such a National Treasure that is very missed! He is what I call a unicorn man!

If this gentleman were still with us, I'd have loved to thank him in person. That he's inspired so many drag queens working today is a real testament to what he accomplished with his work as Vida Boheme.
_To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar_ is by no means realistic. While transgender women are a completely different type of bird altogether, the three actors headlining the cast lamented the torture one would have to endure to _live_ in the accoutrements of drag full-time and how this is often played to absurdity. Thus, _To Wong Foo_ is perhaps best described as a drag fairytale, with the Four Steps Towards Utter, Utter Fabulousness serving as the story's moral.
All three actors could have easily played it strictly for laughs, but after working with actual drag queens in New York City, it's clear each felt a real responsibility to take this film more seriously than most other actors may have. One might think that action film stars and romantic heartthrobs would have found the material too risky to their careers, but Vida Boheme in particular was a role that just about every A-list actor of the time fought for. Sean Penn allegedly arrived at his audition in full drag and as the list was whittled down, many others were asked to do screen tests in makeup and a wig. Patrick Swayze was one of the last to audition and a name director Beeban Kidron admits she was initially hesitant to consider, but he arrived in full Vida mode and delivered a 45-minute monologue that displayed emotion pulled from his days being bullied for studying ballet. In addition to the hoops the casting team was having the candidates jump through, Swayze also insisted Kidron a short walk with him in the streets of New York City as Vida to show her he could "pass" as a real woman. Whether or not he proved that is likely a matter of opinion, but it managed to win him the role.
_To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar_ was well before its time and is unlikely to ever receive the accolades it truly deserves outside of being considered a beloved "cult movie," which is unfortunate, because like the film's three heroines, it gives audiences a new perspective on life and the people we share it with. Drag itself has gone through enormous shifts in visibility and acceptance with shows like _RuPaul's Drag Race_ that have given mainstream audiences the opportunity to not only see some of the art form's most impressive luminaries, but also a glimpse into the lives of the artists themselves. And while each time drag seems to become a little too visible, there's inevitable pushback against those who've never taken it upon themselves to speak with drag artists or see one of their shows in person. It will always have those that demonize it, but as Patrick Swayze himself has sadly proven, life is too short.
I recall hearing (from Miss Coco Peru, I believe) that each of the drag queens that helped the actors prepare or appeared in the film's two pageant sequences that bookend the film received beautiful engraved gifts from him to commemorate the film's release and his appreciation for what they do.
I'm a drag queen that started my career right around the same time _To Wong Foo_ premiered and, like the film, I'm about to pass a anniversary milestone: thirty years. I'm now something of a Vida Boheme myself as I've become a "drag mother" to many younger performers. Vida's an excellent role model in that regard and everytime I watch the film, I invariably catch a reference I'd never understood in each previous screening or a line of dialog strikes me a different way. To close this, I'll share one of the film's final lines that, as a drag queen myself, has always moved me:
CAROL ANNE: I love you, Miss Vida Boheme.
VIDA: I've waited my entire life to hear those words said to that name....and I'm very happy that you're the one to say them.
Anybody in the LGBTQ community - and indeed anyone that's ever been cast out from their family or friends - can relate to the raw loneliness and emotion of that line. And it's one of the following sentences that summarize everything perfectly.
CAROL ANNE Vida! I don't think of you as a man and I don't think of you as a woman. I think of you as an angel.
Thank you, Mr. Swayze, for Vida and the life you gave her. xoxox

Amazing movie!!! Ty, Patrick!!! Wish you were still here with us! The trans and drag queen communities could really use your voice rn. They are being bullied relentlessly. I just found out about this movie and will be recommending to all I know 😊

His deep southern Texas accent definitely made the credibility of Vida a bit of a challenge. Even in this interview when he says, " figure that sh*t out..."
