This was from 1978 during Judas Priest's early years as they were developing musically... According to guitarist K.K. Downing, the song came about when their drummer (at the time) Les Binks picked up a guitar in the studio where they were recording their 4th album 'Stained Class'... and started playing that riff... The whole band took notice and decided to write a song around that riff and gave Les Binks songwriting credit. Rob Halford (vocals) started to stretch his piercing high vocal range around this time and Priest was still experimenting... the lyrics were likely about old or incapacitated people who are in hospice care, waiting for death to release them (If u ever visit a old folks' home, it's a sad and ominous sight... seeing people who are barely alive under 24/7 supervision... unable to do anything on their own...) Glenn Tipton's guitar solo on 'Beyond the realms of death' ... is considered one of the best in heavy metal history. The lyrics are a testament to the reality that life is not rosy and great... We all will reach a dark place in our lives where nothing makes sense... and it's heavy metal music and lyrics that help people like me come to terms w/ it... Even in Judas Priest, we know now that founding guitarist Glenn Tipton has been diagnosed w/ Parkinson's disease and had to retire from actively touring w/ the band (Priest currently tours w/ Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap playing guitar) Even though Tipton is struggling, he still plays guitar when he can and writes music for Priest to record... And Parkinson's is a cruel, painful & incurable disease to suffer through... I can testify to that fact even now, having seen people suffering slowly and heading for the inevitable end... People literally lose their minds because of the misery, because a suffering body yields a suffering mind... Judas Priest were from Birmingham, England and followed in the bleak musical direction of Black Sabbath before them... so, their brand of heavy metal was bound to be dark and dangerous (and not for everyone 😁) However, Judas Priest did raise the bar on the speed and intensity of heavy metal music in the 70's... When they became huge in the 80's, they were the ultimate heavy metal band w/ the twin guitar attack and Rob Halford's high vocals and defiant persona onstage. Major metal bands like Metallica... Slayer ... Anthrax ... Queensryche... etc. owe their careers to Judas Priest 🤘🤘
Wow I was looking for this song to listen to like usual but saw this reaction was recommended. Usually when people do Priest it's always Painkiller. Nice to see someone do some of the older tracks. Love the solo in this one
This one caused quite a stir back in the day. Teen suicide and lawsuits. Its actually about a guy rejecting society and withdrawing in to a comotose shell, until he dies.
The song you're referring to with the teen suicide lawsuit is not this song It is from this album but the song is Better By You Better Than Me and it's a cover of a Spooky Tooth song
Many have commented that this was the song the prosecutors blamed for the two teen boys's suicide attempts in 1985. Actually it wasn't this song that they blamed. It was the song Better By You Than By Me, which is on this same album (Stained Class - 1978). Interestingly, Priest wrote this song, but they didn't write Better By You Than By Me. It was written by Spooky Tooth in the 1960's. But yes, it was a very high profile case in Reno, Nevada in 1988 after the boy's tragic suicide pact in Dec. 1985 (one being successful and the other dying a few years later as was mentioned). I believe it's important to point out they had both been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in addition to listening to the Stained Class album. I'm not making any judgement as to what impacted them the most to do what they did, but these were all included as facts of the case. One more thing, it may have been possible that the boy who died instantly that night might have suffered physical or sexual abuse at the hands of the Mother's boyfriend or ex-boyfriend. I don't believe that was ever proven, but she seemed to hint that something like that could've have occured. I know that's a lot of information, I just feel like with something like this that it's very important to include all the facts and factors involved. Judas Priest were ultimately found Not Guilty in the jury's verdict.
Thank you for reacting to my favourite Judas Priest song. I remember learning it when I was younger on guitar and it has some really beautiful chords in it. The lyrics are definitely very morose but then again I think a lot of people in the UK who were poor and work in class in the 80s were feeling that way so it must’ve been incredibly relatable for them.
NICE!! I do miss a young and vibrant Judas Priest! The Live album UNLEASHED IN THE EAST is second to none. DIAMONDS AND RUST their cover of a Joan Baez song is to me the best cover! SINNER!! Totally awesome! For you how about DESERT PLAINS. A love song by them or BURNIN UP! There are many other Judas Priest songs I would have recommended to #1 A Lady and #2 A Lady not of this genre! BLOODSTONE or YOU'VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMING!! They have great Metal for the entire family!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
You have to decide for yourself. This is a complex song lyrically. I’ve always found it to be about a veteran or an elderly person. This song is from the late 70s and the music is fantastic and Halford’s vocals are unsurpassed.
Killer song and album, Judas Priest in the 70s and early 80s were pioneers of heavy metal, doing their own twin guitar leads with the powerful and unique vocals of Rob Halford. They are truly worth a listen when in the mood, try Desert Plains for some very listenable, hard rocking, road music from them, it would be worth your time. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Priest had a few songs with slower rythm and also a few deep songs about dark depressing stuff, i havent read up on the lyrics on this song only what i understand while listening. I think is about a person who dont want to live any more and goes into a coma and after years in hospital he wakes up and smiles coz he knows he is about to die. Might be more to it than this though. Someone mentioned the 2 boys who made a dual suicide while listening to a Priest song, i watched a documentary about it many years ago and one of the boys father claimed his son had been brainwashed by hidden lyrics in the song and that they had a great relationship so he couldnt understand why his son killed himsel. In court the father´s attorney was playing the song "better you better than me" backwards and claimed that there was a message saying "do it" Rob halford dismissed this and said that this was a sound made from his breathing technic. So in court he sang this line and they played it backwards and sure enough same sound was there, the case was dismissed but Rob Halford was sad that this happened in the first place and i myself wonder, why these boys was so depressed to kill themselves? Ty for the reaction Maddy
A bit of a deep cut, I don't think I've seen anyone else react to this song. Blind Guardian covered the song in the late 90's, as part of a Judas Priest tribute album full of song covers, and I found the BG version first.
I finally figured it out. The chorus in this song was driving me crazy, just the music part. It's exactly the same riff from Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love". It took me forever. Bad Company released their song just three years earlier, 1975, then Judas Priest release of this song. Anyway, I didn't catch the lyrics of this song until you talked about it Maddy. I went back and read them and it's not my cup of tea, far too negative. Awesome reaction though!
Maddy, you ought to compare these lyrics to You've Got Another Thing Coming. That song is about continuing to "fight" for your live and living, no matter what. "The answer now is don't give in. Aim for a new tomorrow!"
never click so fast...Rob Halford is an amazing singer, try Diamond And Rust live unleashed in the east, Judas Priest are pionners in heavy metal. new sub.
I grew up in the late 60s and 70s and Im a musician and played in a few bands back in the day I saw a lot of great artists live concerts b4 the computers and Internet came into the mix musicians had to learn how to play a instrument work on their craft I know a lot of songs from different genres if your intrested ill send you some
Back in the day when this album first came out was 1978 Rob Halford the lead singer was an openly gay man living a very isolated life which I think a lot of this song represents.
A little history for you Maddy. It was alleged that two young boys were inspired to commit suicide by the lyrics of this song. Rob Halford (Lead singer)was called before U.S. Congress to defend himself and the song. This was when Tipper Gore was going after the Music industry to put warning labels on records with offensive lyrics.
No, two those boys were inspired and even one of them wrote he was mesmorized by song " Better than me, better than you". That is what R. Halford was singing in the court.
hey young lady please react to diamonds and rust live, a love song from joan baez to bob dylan, the one that says ant33, and where rob sports a foot to neck leather gown, its incredible rob absolutely nails it and joan and bob's 15 year old lovechild says its better than mom's version
Fair Maddy, definitely depressive. Priest, and specifically Halford, were horror movie buffs. It's supposed to scare. People argue over who were the 'fathers' of 80s melodic yet heavy metal, this was 78! For me it was Judas Priest and Ronny Montrose/Sammy Hagar (Montrose). Priest has a lot of Upbeat party angst songs as well as futuristic fantasy that may be more to your liking. Thanks. Peace

Maddy. Two teens mutually decided to commit suicide by shotgun because of this song. One survived for a period of time but ultimately died. It landed Judas Priest in court where it was claimed that back masking of the song told them to do it.

That solo by Glen Tipton is phenomenal!!
One of my favorite guitar solos ever. No one can get more feeling in a guitar solo than Glenn Tipton can.

Judas priest has so many great songs. "Desert Plains" is easy listening, but some rockin ones are "Electric Eye" and "The Sentinel".
You have to decide for yourself. This is a complex song lyrically. I’ve always found it to be about a veteran or an elderly person. This song is from the late 70s and the music is fantastic and Halford’s vocals are unsurpassed.
Bass kills it on this jam
No question; the lyrics are very deep. Same for, "Before the dawn."
That is the result of Rob's love for Thesaurus and theatre I guess
'Before the Dawn' is one of my favorites.
Love the band!

Great song
This song is considered as a ballad in their own words.
Judas priest did a Joan Baez cover called "Diamonds and Rust". It's definitely interesting and worth a listen
Yes great song. I normally prefer studio versions, but the unleashed in the East version is amazing.

No way is this a deep cut, it's mandatory listening for any Priest fan.
one of the 1st purely metal albums
