  • 3 Years Full Time RV (MISTAKES, REGRETS, SURPRISES) Lessons Learned - I've learned a lot in the last 3 years about how I want to live more fully, self care, travel slower, possibly get another new RV (this time a truck camper by Host possibly), and be more present. I talk about about things I've never discussed on here like my RV mistakes, regrets, surprises along the way, and....well...my love life and dating on the road.

    ★ How I Got Started
Hi, I'm Amber and in May 2017 I started this nomadic journey after selling my house and all my belongings to pursue this crazy dream of living out of my RV full-time and traveling all around North America.
After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B Hymer Aktiv van. I couldn't have been more excited to continue my second year in a van that allows me to travel to more places and experience more in life.

I’m going to retire in about 4 more years and I’m going to go purchase a new truck ( I have a GM supplier discount ) and a round a 20 foot fun mover. Then I’m gonna take my Harley my dirtbike and my 3E bikers my mobile meth lab 😳 ( well I guess I could leave one of the bikes to make room for everything. And I’m going to stay down in Florida for a while and I will use my fun mover as as base camp. And I’m going to travel around to different I’ll row dirt bike events and race my dirtbike. And I will take my Harley on various road trips. Then as I become more seasoned I will start to head out west and I will basically do the same thing. I’m going to get either a Chevrolet or GMC Highcountry or Dinali with the 2500 series and the diesel engine with the Allison transmission therefore I don’t have to worry about not having enough power to get around. My only issue is I don’t know whether to buy something like the ATC brand which is all aluminum that sells for about $50,000 for a 24 foot fun mover are to go with a different brand for about 30. From what I understand you want to update about every 10 years but the more I have in my used fun mover the More I’m going to have to have out of my used fun mover.

I drive on the NASCAR racing circuit. ( not a car, a big rig ). This is my second year, nine months on 3 months off. Dating “ Stationary” people is impossible. I’ve tried, and it doesn’t (hasn’t) worked. If you’re anywhere near a NASCAR race, I’ll get a coffee ( or meal ) with you.
I got rid of everything back in Vancouver WA. Two years back when I started this. I can easily take a day off in what ever city I’m in, always have a rental car, and I love to drive and see the local area that I’m in. Name is Brian. See you there. I’ll get a notification if you reply to this.

Story Chasing Ive decided I want to get the course but want to wait , Im on vacation in 3 weeks and want to do the whole course at that time . I’ve got so much going on at the moment that I want to get a lot of that finished up and out of the way and off my mind first so I can fully focus on the course. Can’t wait to get started. Not enough energy at the end of my work day , lots of overtime currently because of covid , apparently I’m lucky or have a really robust immune system. Also working on the house to get ready to sell it and struggling with letting go of some of my fur babies, I have a pack of dogs , down to just seven now and four cats that I will not be able to accommodate in my new lifestyle and I’m not going to just give them to anyone , that’s my biggest and hardest hurdle.

ASAP, I’m sprucing up my house to get it ready to sell , hopefully I can get all this rolled up and on the market within the next month or so. I can’t really hit the highway yet because of my job but plan on living at the lake ( Waco lake) so I can get all my little kinks and bugs worked out of it first and get really comfortable driving it and all that good stuff before I head out . Not sure how much longer I’ll even have a job the way they are talking, I’m a mail carrier, 25 years 9 of which don’t count because I was a rual sub. A loophole I know. Either way I’m aiming for within this year.

We where just 3 weeks out from being able to buy our rv and hit the road. She suddenly passed last week at 39 and the only sure thing Ive had this last week with my thoughts is. On the dating aspect, I travel full time and have tried dating in this lifestyle and my biggest advice is to take it slow. To me the best way to manage this is travel together in your own set up. That's been the biggest problem I've seen on the road, you meet and within a month they wanna consolidate into just one rig. There is nothing wrong with each person having their own space but caravan together

Hi! So finally! My house will be on the market in a week. Real estate is great here in the PNW. I will be getting rid of pretty much everything. I m 62 but I am a young at least I feel young, I may not look it but....lol. I will be heading out in my old 98 Minnie Winnie which was actually a time capsule when I bought it. Only 23K miles on it, older couple owned it and really never did anything with it. I have made it my own getting rid of the dinette putting a comfy World Market sofa in its' place. Added solar, flat screen tv, really nice flooring, laminated the counter tops, etc...oh yes almost forgot, new tires, resealed the roof, I do have delamination but all has been fixed, who cares the rig is 22 years old! So I will start out with this and eventually buy a bigger rig, probably an A with one slide out, tons of them out there in great shape, low mileage and under $50K. I am so excited, my two sisters think I'm crazy, maybe I am. I REALLY hope to meet you one day Amber, I have followed you since the beginning and have watched your channel grow. Nice video, Amber. Love your candor! FYI, I’m about a “half timer” as I teach high school science in the Fall and Spring, and hang out in 2 RVs during the long school breaks and during the summer. In 10 years of doing this, I’ve learned a lot, too, and would underscore some of your points... having a “home base” is nice, and I ended up with a 43’ park model RV in a mountain lake lot in NH that I use for a couple months each summer. Having a base gives you a place to build relationships with doctors, Dentist’s, tax accountants, and others. Then I have a truck camper... an Arctic Fox (four season) model 865... for doing the vagabond thing. Before you jump to one of those, please do research on the many sites and brand-specific TV groups. I love truck campers... this is my second one in 10 years. One lesson... the big multi slide units are beautiful on the dealer lot, but 1) you can’t get to the bathroom on the road, as the slides block entrance, 2) you won’t be able to put those slides out if you overnight in a truck stop or Walmart, as they take up too much space, and 3) big TC’s need a massive truck to be safe... dual rear wheel 350/450/3500 at least, preferable with a Diesel engine. Anything less and you will regret it the way you drive into the rough roadways. They are top-heavy in weight, so they feel unstable in turns and on banked roads compared to your van. Having said all that, I LOVE my TC, and I will never give up owning one until I’m too old to drive. Mine is as big as you can get without slides, and at 6’2” tall and 220 lbs, I was very comfortable sequestered in it for 70 days due to Covid. Please consider subscribing to truck camper magazine online, and join the many TC oriented Facebook chat rooms. In the latter, newbies often pop in and ask for pros and cons of different TC’s and trucks, and you get dozens of useful answers from many perspectives.
Finally, if you do find any decent dating apps for us vagabonds, please let me know! As a divorcee and full time RVer, I find that most folks on, say, Match think of me as “trailer trash” as they have “real” homes and can’t imagine anything else. Even my Harvard degree doesn’t get me past that hurdle. We need our own forum to help us meet like minded folks! Good luck in your travels, and keep those wonderful videos coming!
    -Reed

Reed Prior thanks for the info. I'm still doing research but know that I need to a big enough truck. Looking at an Ford F450, dually, diesel, camper/snow plow package for bigger stiffer springs. Sooooo...you're starting this forum and app? :)

    • @reedprior4255
      @reedprior4255 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Story Chasing Hello! I don’t recommend getting the plow package when you buy a truck for a TC. In fact, my RAM 3500 DRW diesel came with a manufacturers warning in the glove box specifically warning against using both a plow and a TC. Not sure if they mean at the same time! Note that slides are also maintenance items, and can be sourced of leakage. Finally, given your year around travel, I’d recommend making sure you buy one with aluminum structure (rather than wood) and have your roof permanently treated by the folks at RV Roof. That gives you a 6mm thick polymer coating over the entire roof, and together these items, while expensive, will ensure you never have to deal with water damage. Would be happy to live chat, if you like. Buying a TC and new truck is a big decision, and there are many factors to consider!

For me being in the mountains of south America,(Colombia) sitting on a rock in the river watching dozens of kids and adults laughing , living simple, no brand name bathing suits, just their cut off shorts and tees, knowing I made more income in a day than they make in a month, yet the experience of being alive in that place was priceless. Perspective is something I've learned is crucial for finding a fulfilling life. Meeting people from countries less commercialized has shown me that people are mostly a reflection of what they accept from the environment they live in. The level of true kindness I found in Philippines has never been seen by me in America. I encourage everyone to live free and be kind everyday 🤠

Could I offer some thoughts on the truck camper? Over 3 decades we have gone through almost every type of RV...pop up, 24 ft travel trailer, 36 ft 5th, 40 ft Mobile Suite ( huge, heavy cow), Eagle Cap truck camper, and we currently travel with a 30 ft Airstream. Some thoughts on the truck camper..... if you are considering a triple slide, you will definitely need a long box duel rear wheel truck. The camper is very easy to unload from the truck, but not easy to load. The campers are supported by relatively small diameter legs that can easily be damaged by not backing exactly square to the camper. Although I never had an issue loading, I always made sure that I had a spotter. A long box duelly is not an easy truck to drive in town, and can be a pain to park in parking lots. I would suggest an F450 because it has a tighter turning radius. All the properly manufactured truck campers will have an arrow on the side indicating the centre weight balance point. This should never sit behind the truck rear axle. All of the triple slide campers that I have checked are so rear heavy that the centre weight point fall behind the rear axle, pulling weight off the steering axle. There may be newer triple slide campers that are balanced better, but the centre weight balance point should not fall behind the trucks rear axle. Please go into your truck camper purchase with your eyes wide open.

I whole heartily agree with the above. Loading a TC correctly is tough.., all in, plan on an hour each time... so mine stays on the truck year round except once every 12 months when it has to come off for a state inspection. I also agree that a long bed dually is tough to drive on urban/suburban environments. They also won’t fit in most automatic car washes, either. Again, of my three RVs ( truck camper, park model trailer, and modified travel trailer, I most like the TC for travel. But I deliberately chose a 4 season non-slide model that fits on a short bed (best to still be DRW) truck. Good luck in your search! There are lots of options out there. One final point... you said you traded your class C for something more “nimble.” A big multi-slide TC will NOT be nimble on the road! It is both top heavy and rear heavy. Not unsafe, but needs decent roads and steady driving. Not best for rural unimproved roads... at least that’s this one man’s opinion!

@@storychasing I presently full time in a triple slide Eaglecap 1165. I carry it on a regular cab Chevy 3500 HD dual wheel pickup. Very easy to load and unload because it is a regular cab. If you are serious about a truck camper, avoid Eaglecap. Poor quality and zero support from the factory. I bought mine used but it was only a year old. If you do not want or need slides, look at Northern Lite and Bigfoot. Good luck with your new search!

I'm a 45 year old woman who has been nomading for 18 months around the world, and totally relate to all of your comments. My nomading involved flying to places then staying as long as I could on a tourist visa. Recently I bought Juno my campervan - she's much smaller than yours! and the interior design needs work! - as a direct response to Covid-19. Juno is enabling me to see the UK and Europe whilst being self sufficient and not spreading potential disease. Yes, first was a pop up dodge camper van, mostly California to BC# 2 pop up slide in camper on a 4x4 f150 short bed, did the across the country 2 times, including around great lakes in Canada & down Baja. #3 full size slide in on a long bed 4x4 dually wet bath so much better for 4 seasons... skiing. Currently 4x4 long bed crew dually Big Foot (dry bath) slide in camper (no slide). I Agree those truck campers your looking at are fantastic. My concern was the slide out's & boondocking. Reading forums suggested caution about the slides. They can get stuck out & can be a real problem especially if off road. Good luck!!

Yes! Don't stop. Keep driving through the sand until you get back on firm ground. I used this tip in Kuwait. Saved me from getting stuck on a couple of occasions. IDEA: With a new rig, would returning to a Class C with 1 slide, and (maybe) a moped, like a Vespa, so you'd have something to get around? Realistic? Not? I've been giving a ton of thought to it, but am still a few years away from taking the plunge.

Good video. Can’t stop thinking about your plans to ditch your van for a pickup & bed camper combo. Really think about the safety or far more vulnerable situation a rig like that can put you in. Having to exit outside to a potentially dangerous situation in order to get into the truck cab & drive away, is not a good feeling!! (Believe me, I’ve had this happen years ago on a super dark night in the mountains alone; trapped in my trailer that I pulled with a Toyota truck. It turned out ok, but damn it was 20 minutes of MAJOR ANXIETY!!!) Especially for solo travelers, this should really be considered. I would’ve given anything for your van on that night!

Thank you, Amber...great content (I'm subbed). I was kind of surprised to hear that it's hard to date out there, since the one thing van lifers and full-time RV'ers always say is that their social lives are WAY more active than when in sticks and bricks, so I was imagining that romance might not be that hard out there. I also imagined that all the van festivals would be hotspots for that kind of mingling; after all you already have something big in common with everyone there (built-in icebreaker is to talk about your rigs, your travels, etc.) . Have you not had that experience that there are other singles at these van life festivals that are ALSO desirous of a companion?

I just loved this! You have such a pleasant presentation style and don't come off as a "know it all" which I find some channels do. I have been full time going on my 6th year and have been loving it. I was single most of the time with no problems. The last two years I traveled with a fellow (separate rigs) and had a great time seeing new places but sadly (and maybe stupidly) didn't realize what was happening as he slowly tried to control everything. I took it as loving and caring for a long time but his temper was horrible. Everything bad that happened he said was my fault. He isolated me more and more from people. We would go to new remote spots and if something didn't go his way he would just take off with me not even knowing where I was and not knowing how to get out. Yes, I trusted way too much. He owned a gun which always scared me and had other "hobbies" that just didn't set well with me. I didn't feel safe in so many ways. I finally left him and it's difficult having no real friends to spend time with or feel good with. Thank goodness I have healthy hobbies and very clear on my decision to leave. I know I just have to remember I can do it on my own again and just take care of myself and heal. I have always been very independent and I am now on my road (I can do it) back to feeling secure and safe on my own. I am now working on learning more about finding boondocking areas on my own. If anyone reading this has any suggestions as to how to get together or camp with other nomads that would be very cool. I am in Wyoming for the summer. I am so grateful that I fell upon your channel and I have subscribed. Thank You.

I love my Northstar Igloo truck camper. My wife and I and 2 cats lived in it full time for a couple of years and now travel a few months a year. Even so, I strongly recommend you reconsider your plan to buy a Host Mammoth. Even my relatively small TC with no slides, weighs in at well over 13,000#. It is not "nimble" and there are a lot of places off road where I cannot safely travel. Forget about leaving the camper and driving the truck. Mine, like most, are difficult to load and unload partially due to a very tight fit. In addition the wheel wells between the truck and camper are great storage. I always seem to load up that area with tools, excess canned goods, paper towels, toilet paper, extra boots/shoes, and dirty laundry. If you do look at TCs, I recommend NO SLIDES and a wet bath instead of a separate dry bath. Let my know if I can help with any questions/concerns.

    • @sewwhatsports
      @sewwhatsports 4 ปีที่แล้ว

moremoney2 Congratulations on taking the step to go on the road. It is both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. My best advice is to find a comfortable space in yourself as you travel. You will meet lots of people in this journey, men and women. You will make acquaintances and you will make friends. And by doing that you will find your tribe. Don’t go out looking for a relationship. Be open to the possibility but let the universe guide you. If it is meant to be and the right person, it will happen. I had been on the road almost a year before I met the man I am now with. In that year I traveled both with a woman’s caravan (for 3 months) and then alone. I met my friend at a camping event, the van build held annually by Jamie from Enigmatic Nomadics. I was walking my dog and he was outside his camper at his campfire working on some artwork. He and I started chatting that and the next night. That became a strong part of our budding relationship, spending hours talking and getting to know each other. After the van build we both were staying at the LTVA in Quartzsite, AZ, though in different areas. Over the course of a few months we became very close friends. Three months after we met I moved my camper next to his and we have “lived together” in our own rigs since then. We have become best friends plus. Over this time we have found we have significant interests that coincide. We laugh because it is almost scary the amount of things that we share and our how basic philosophies of life are so alike. We are there for each other, plan to live together and share our lives but neither of us wants another marriage. Both of us have no plans to give up our independence but we are committed to support and care for each other. So we are now together for 7 months and we live day by day. It is safe, it is comforting and it is loving to share this nomadic journey. I wish you safe journeys, fun adventures, many new friends, and if the universe sees fit, a travel companion that will enhance your life.

This video hits on a lot of the points that I’m interested in with regard to nomadic living. One thing to consider for your next vehicle (and you’ve probably already considered this), is the fact that you won’t have immediate access to the cab in a truck camper the way you do in a van, so if you find yourself in any danger and need to drive off in a hurry, you’ll need to exit the camper to get to the cab.

Love your channel. As a woman quite a bit older than you, I think having a small basecamp is ideal. It really is having the best part of two worlds. The freedom of a nomad, and the security of a safe haven if you need it during times like this or somewhere to hunker down if you get sick and need to recover. Keep up the good work. Hi Amber, I just watched this video and I must say I've been planning to do this for the last 8 years. I think next year when I finish this last job I'll hang it up and hit the road. I've had campers in the past so It's not new to me. Just need to get some things in order. I've thinking of Fla. as a home base. I've watched quite a few videos from others and have learned a lot of what to expect although I know there's so much more to learn. My plan is to travel 4 months then come home for a few weeks and then back on the road. I congratulate you on 3 years and wish you many more to come. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I traveled internationally for years by teaching abroad. I thought about transitioning to being a nomad via bus or van. It occurred to me while watching your channel that motivations for traveling can be quite different. I loved my profession and was very curious about different cultures. I traveled with only a bag or two. In a van you seem to focus on the scenery and the technical difficulties getting from A to B. Frankly, the technical aspects of van life is a drawback. A similarity would be the depth of the friendships you meet along the way, the desire for companionship and the weeding out of anyone who does not travel. Happy travels!

I think J Westfall Davis you bring up a valid point. It's something that people need to check out to determine what situation is right for them. We as people often romanticize ideas, only to realize it was just that. I think Story Chasing hit the nail on the head with work life balance. I too am a teacher as well. I get roughly 14 weeks a year and 10 of those straight to travel. I find that I enjoy both. Growing up I didn't have a beautiful home and lawn etc. so for me I thoroughly enjoy having space and a lawn to take care of I find joy in landscaping. It's a balance, but I also think people have to find joy in their everyday life. People can be so negative that they are missing adventure that's right in their own backyard.

I have friend who often wants to move. However, moving to a new location means leaving behind a beautiful craftsman style home they have renovated, biking, kayaking, lakes, mtns. All of those are right here in their own backyard. Rather than appreciate what blessings they have. It's all about how something new will create happiness, when the real issue is within.

I've Rv'd for 40+ years but not full time. I owned my biz for a majority of those years. Retired 1- 1/2 yrs ago and we are now taking more extended trips. We've had almost every category of RV except a Class B. Two were slide in truck campers. As our needs & wants or family dynamics changed; as did the RV. There is no one size fits all. It's all a matter of what you want & works for you. Took a Summer off ~20 yrs ago and went cross country in a Class A with 3 teenagers. Loved it but went back to work . I tip my hat to your tenacity. Best to you & your endeavors.

Kids grown & gone. We now are back to about 70% boon-docking. Mostly in the Pacific N.W. & our Snowbird trips to AZ. We use hookups or low use parks in the Winter. We got rid of our Class A due to difficulty of going off grid around here. LOVED it going X-Country with kids though. Our 2 slide in campers were great for Forrest Service & Logging roads. Our tt is a good compromise for now (subject to change). Drop the tt & explore with the truck.

My wife and I were on Video #12 The Calm Before the Storm Season 1 when this video caught our interest. My wife wanted to jump ahead and watch this video to see how you were doing after three years. We are both very impressed! My wife and I are both in our mid 50's. We have homes free and clear in Oregon and condo in Manila, Philippines. We also have other rental properties, free and clear. We have been snowbirds for more than 13 years, spending 5 months in the Philippines and remaining months in Oregon or other travel destinations. I am retired US military and my wife is an elementary teacher who stays busy teaching online. Traveling the USA, and Canada via RV has been a dream my wife had for many years. We are now in preparation mode. Two more years before the last of the kids graduate from college and our Oregon home has made suitable improvements to store motorhome during the winter months when we are off in the tropics. We hope to have enough saved up in 2 years to purchase a new Winnebago Navion 24d. Again , thank you for sharing. :)

For a long time I was thinking of buying a RV and living out of that. I’ve retired from the department of defense and as a pilot. I feel I’m in a good place to start living out of a RV. I ran across you and you have brought up some good things to consider. The big one, for me, is dating. I don’t believe we are meant to be alone and my fear is just that. Don't feel bad Amber... we were at the Florida Hymer meetup this past winter. We were rushing around trying to catch up with everyone to go on boat tour. We didn't do our walk around either. Started driving away with our tire mount down! Heard some loud banging in the back so we stopped, still not knowing what was going on. Hubby got out to look and found our tire mount down, scratched up and a piece broken off. Some duct tape later and we were off. Our first big newbie mistake. You seem to have things pretty well in perspective for your stage in life and are well expressed. That was an interesting listen. To answer your question, life to me is about enjoying the journey, and building something for subsequent generations. Many of us with stationary dwellings tend to envy travelers. We've enjoyed traveling and can't help but think how wonderful it must be to be doing so full time. I used to think how amazing it would be to get on a motorcycle and travel for a year or more through several countries. But I came to realize the true joy is in my family and homesteading. Having acreage and plenty of space under roof is a blessing. There's infinite projects, and I'll never run out of things to teach my grandchildren! Moving around seeing new places in people all the time would be a delight but there's nothing like being there with my kids and grandkids and helping them learn and grow. There's a huge difference between having a house on a lot in a place like Seattle versus having a farm, as you can imagine. We have a lot more freedom, privacy, and enjoyment of life. You were blessed to get out of the rat race. We would like a van like yours for the occasional getaway, but living on the road would not suit us. Wishing you the best in your future developments!

Still deciding weather to get it on the road or just keep it for the Bush block... I live in New Zealand and think it's probably too big for the winding roads around here but would be perfect for a roll on roll off in Australia.... Amber! Really Really think long and hard about a camper! Had one for many years and I would not travel this country driving into states not knowing what kind of wind can come up. When it’s windy the truck leans over and gets pushed around like nothing you have ever experienced before and then finally one year it happened! It ripped the tie downs right out of the camper and it started blowing over on its side! But I guess because the other side was still attached it rested on its side but still in the pickup bed! I stood there hanging on to one of the jacks thinking it was gonna blow totally out with the next gust until finally someone stopped and helped me literally push it back upright and then I limped off the freeway til the wind went away hours later. But it not only destroyed the camper, it actually twisted the frame to the truck and totaled the truck too. You can’t just drive around corners or thru wind like other RV’s. In fact you have to be careful if you even go to turn around on a hill when you get sideways. Until the accident I never realized how many times I was within an inch of disaster. I think it would really scare you the way they lean. Anyways good luck with your travels!

Travelled in both truck campers and Vans in Yukon , Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta. The big disadvantage of the truck campers is when you just want to stop and use the washroom or eat, you have to get out and go around to the back to get into the camper. They are great when you are stationary, but I didn’t prefer them when travelling. Especially travelling alone as a women, there were a few times when I didn’t want to get out. Sometimes just because of bad weather.
