    We have a Host Mammoth, which is the beast of Host’s line on a 5500 Ram dually and absolutely love it. We converted the Ram to a flat bed and had a company add commercial-style storage cabinets. A total game changer. We toured the plant and were impressed with the quality of their rigs. Plus we like their slide system which is not Schwintek (not reliable). Can’t go wrong with Host.

      Hi there, would you be willing to talk to us about your truck selection and the conversion to flat bed w/storage cabinets? We are thinking that is what we want to do and it seems quite daunting to sort through everything!

      I also am looking to buy a Ram diesel 5500 and put a host camper on it and I wonder did you have to do anything extra to the suspension of your 5500 truck to handle the weight of the camper? Thanks!

  • @TravisSteeves
    @TravisSteeves 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    She is spot on it’s all about the truck you choose for your camper. I want to stress that she is very smart she bought a dually. Anyone buying a camper like this, no matter what sales people say dually is a must have. Makes the driving experience way less stressful. Keeps the whole unit more stable on the road. Especially in the cross winds.

      For me, the taking off and on are way easier than my bumper pool travel trailer. I learned to drive in a truck. So it is something I am very comfortable backing up. And with the 4 jacks automated, it raises and lowers easy.

      @@storychasing There are so many nuances btw camper companies Amber.... ie last week in a couple msgs to you (one via your website on this topic, I did not hear back) - I reminded you about the INSULATION factors company to company, that is the first thing I research about a company, incl. when I stopped this video to go research this company for a bit. Insulation is key whether you are in summer heat or winter cold, and even in rain.

    • @101taiga
      @101taiga 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Story Chasing I think fiberglass is the way to go for a variety of reasons: lighter weight, decreased leaking (clamshell fiberglass fabrication very much like a boat), well insulated and 4 season capable. I like the modern interior of NL Campers, the storage, the durability if well cared for and maintained. I don’t want any slides for too many reasons to list, but mostly because they would be of no use to me 50% of the time. I’m a travel RN and when on a contract and working, I sleep in the hospital parking lot, where extending slides would be problematic. Also, I want everything accessible all the time, which slides sometimes prohibit. Just my opinion of course. Also looking at Bigfoot, but they’re bigger and heavier and I want something a bit more sleek and streamlined. Both have excellent reputations. Keep us updated! I would love to know what you decide on✌🏼

    • @BarryDuttonSellsHomes
      @BarryDuttonSellsHomes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I recently bought a Palamino HS8801 truck camper. Like Wendy's, it also sits in a Ram with the Cummins diesel . I went back & forth on the slides, and ultimately decided they weren't worth the extra weight, cost, maintenance and accessibility when they're in. I also have a similar solar setup as Wendy's. It's a game-changer when you can run your AC without hookups or generator.
    So, tip of the day: don't skimp on solar. 😎

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Florida Man 😀 I couldn't agree with you more on solar!!! My last rig had 750 watts and I never used a generator. Love it. How many watts do you have of solar and what type of batteries, etc?

      I only had enough roof real estate for 600 watts. But I ran them in series/parallel for more amperage. I have a 3000w renogy inverter, and 2 Renogy 170ah lithiums. I can run my ac indefinitely when the sun is out, and many hours after it goes down. It's reassuring to know I have that kind of power wherever I go.

    Not assuming Wendy doesn't know, but I have met alot of people that dont know the tow mirrors flip up. She has them down with the camper on so maybe she doesnt know. They rotate up manually for better rearward vision with a camper or trailer hooked up. I have the same truck.

    I strongly recommend looking at the Oliver Elite II. That's what I would buy if I could ever break free of this *sticks and bricks* rut. It's relatively small and compact, has no slides (which will inevitably be a problem), is a true four season rig, and costs less than a lot of truck campers. It also has a cargo carrying capacity that dwarfs anything that you could put in the bed of a truck. Another plus is that set-up is much simpler, and overall stability is better. If you can connect with someone who has a current year model, I would love to see a review.

    Did Wendy say if the Host was four seasons? How is it in the winter? I plan on doing the same thing but I’m looking at a Northern Lite. I like that they are built in Canada because that is where we live and where we will be spending most of our time. I will however ask for an upgrade to the solar system. Definitely need lithium and a few of those batteries. Cheers!!!
