    I live in Minnesota and I've come to the conclusion that the key to being motivated and enjoy running outside in cold winter weather is to be comfortable by defaulting to overdressing. By 'defaulting to overdress' I mean putting on enough layers to the point where I'm more likely to make the mistake of dressing too warm than too cold. That way, I don't have to drum up the motivation by telling myself 'to be tuff' and just 'grin and bear it' with the cold weather. Instead, I'm always confident I'll be relatively comfortable running in the winter; maybe I'll be a little too warm, but I've never dressed so warm that I felt like I do running on the hottest, high humidity summer runs. It really has worked for me in getting myself out the door to run. Also, since it's dark much more in the winter I make sure to wear a reflective yellow vest and a headlamp when running after dark. The only thing I think I need to add to my winter running repertoire would be some type of metal shoe spikes or cleats for the slippery icy conditions.

    Ben thanks for posting this video. I am really loving yours and Sarah's enthusiasm for the sport. I am a long term runner (over 20 years) so there isn't much I haven't heard of before, but what you present is definitely motivating. Seeing how you approach training, what your diet looks like (I am a vegetarian too) and how passionate you are about what you do has motivated me to dial up my own running skills. I used to be pretty quick and I've let myself get slow. Hopefully I can regain a little of my speed this year. BTW: I've only been to Heathrow twice (with a quick bus ride out to Dover) but seeing London makes me want to visit when times are better. Thanks again for the all hard work you do.

    Hi Ben. Really enjoying your channel. My Facebook story told me that it was a year ago today my knee folded and wasn't quite the same for months, got back then the same legs IT band went. A small milestone but ran 20miles this week, niggle free after starting back about 6 weeks ago. My calves weren't happy with me at first. Feel like a runner again!

    Zwift - I use a MYRUN Technogym treadmill. It is "smart" and the treadmill speed and also your cadence are transmitted to Zwift so they match up which takes a lot of the hassle out of it. It is quite a compact one and easy to move if you need to but still goes to 20 kph and plenty of room for even my lanky 1.95m self. Otherwise a Stryd foot pod or a Runn sensor are the best two other options IMHO. Good training. I did 100 miles in a week on holiday once then felt like I needed another one LOL. Your runs there seem to be "fairly fast" at just over 7:00 pace. I notice say Seth often goes a lot slower. That said, some years ago, when I was bit closer to your speed now probably was similar - still well over a minute per mile slower than marathon pace.

      @DarinCSmith 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said!

    • @BenParkes
      @BenParkes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes.. maybe a tad fast on some of the runs. Usually I’d have double days, so the evening recovery would be around 5 mins per k or 8 min miles.. but they’ve gone for the time being only running once per day.. hopefully back soon, then there will be much more variety in the paces. Thanks for the info on the my run!

    Highly recommend the Assault Runner treadmill. It's a motorleas curved treadmill. I have run on a lot of coomercial treadmills and the Assault Runner is the closest you will get to running outside. Really forces you to engage your posterior chain to get it moving and makes you focus on form, you can't be lazy on it, i.e. set a speed and switch off. It also has Bluetooth so hooks up with zwift. It's also pretty quiet and a lot less of the impact bounce you get on conventional treadmills.

    Hi Ben, I love the treadmill and can't wait for the gym to reopen to get back on it. It's an awsome training tool that allows specific workouts to be completed accurate if it's not possible outside for whatever reason, weather terrain etc. I also find that I can put more volume in by mixing it up on the treadmill probably due to the reduced impact. I used to use a stryd footpod but found it not accurate on zwift so ended up buying the zwift run pod which is much cheaper but super accurate. Zwift running is good to and would definitely join group runs, races and workouts. Looking forward to seeing you on zwift..... 👍

    I use Zwift with the treadmill. I have a stryd pod which works great and probably the most accurate for relaying the speed. I also have a Runn device (measures the speed of the belt) which I actually use more often for the Zwift because it also gives the elevation which I follow on Strava. I haven't found a good way for the foot pod to send that information. The Runn device is also good if you have more than one person using the treadmill with Zwift (no need to buy multiple foot pods for each user).

    Hi Ben, super impressive your 100miles! I live in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and next to the tropical climate there is nothing but hills here - no easy runs! Treadmill is a part of my weekly running routine especially for running during the day. Using it mostly for recovery runs and speedwork. Not gonna hit 100 miles any time soon but steadily increasing milage🤞

      Sounds like a tough area to train in... well unless you’re training for a hilly local race in humidity! All the best getting it done on the roads, trails and treadmill!

    Hey Ben! Really love your videos and super inspired by you to get out there and get it done! 😊 Also live in London so really fun to see some of the places I usually run around in your videos! Could you please talk a bit more about taking breaks in your training runs? I always feel like if I'm setting off for a long training run I should do the whole distance in one go but would love to get your view on it-do you / should you work some breaks into longer runs ? Thanks! 😬😬

    I started running last year 2020 and in summer (june, july and august) I did 150km per week fasted without any food or drink, running every day wit 3 hill session (10-16 reps) per week and about 18000m elevation gain....completely destroyed my legs (knees and IT band) & I also do a weight training or HIIT every day.....:/

    Great running, I’m chuffed to be on target to hit 100 miles in Jan with my RED (5km/day) challenge. Not been a member of a gym for a while but did actually enjoy the dreadmill when I was, up to an hour with some uplifting tunes on anyway,

    • @BenParkes

      Probably replacing outdoor miles.. so run a little shorter outdoors, then a recovery jog on the treadmill.

    Ha ha I’ve completed just over 20 miles 🤪this week for the first time in a couple months after spraining a calf muscle or something near my ankle . Anyway can’t imagine what it would be like to ever do 100miles. Enjoy your videos they are pretty motivating and I found myself saying quite frequently: “well I’m getting it done” even if it’s a “hat’s forward” kind of weather!
