Over the past few months, I was treating 2019 as a failure. I didn't create as much as I wanted, I didn't complete some running goals and I let myself down a lot. What I failed to acknowledge was just how successful 2019 actually was! From Tiger Claw, a top iTunes album, amazing consistency in content creation, pacing and filming multiple friends at their A-races, to even attempting my own 100 mile race after a 4 year period of time away from the distance. I adventured a ton, I stayed healthy, I lived and I loved. That sounds like a success to me!
For years I wanted to complete the arbitrary goal of running a 100 mile training week. Outside of running a 100 mile race, I've come close a couple of times, but had never been able to complete it purely. I figured what better way to close out 2019 - and the decade - then by finally knocking out 100 miles over 7 days.
HUGE shout out to my coach, David Roche, for all the faith and guidance! Couldn’t have done it without him!

Two years ago I had a week off work. Weather was good, so I went out into the woods for a run every day. Just for the fun of it. I didn't plan this, it just happened due to the favorable conditions. After six days I realized that I am at 90+ km. Although it rained at the last day, I went out for an additional 10 km, just to complete the 100 km / week mile stone. Never ever had I run so many km per week before. Even at my best times, before my health problems started, that limit the amount of running I can do. Sometimes you have to challenge your self with a goal. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. In either case you may go beyond your expectations.

This video inspired me to do my first 60 mile week! In August of 2018, I weighed over 310 pounds, lost 130 pounds by June of 2019, and ran my first mile that same month! I did my first half marathon at the beginning of September, and my first Ultra Marathon (33 miles, 10k ft of climbing) in November. Did a 14.4 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, and saw I was only a simple 5k away from hitting 60 miles this week. So I changed clothes, went to the gym, and did 3.5 miles on the treadmill just to hit the mark! Thanks for your ever-inspiring content, it helps lots of us.

So inspiring man! I had similar feelings about 2019 - didn’t feel that I had accomplished enough since I didn’t get my coffee table book published in the timeline that I had hoped. But then I had to remind myself that it wasn’t all negative: I ran my first ultra marathon (Born to Run in May) and as a commercial photographer/director - I created work that I am rather proud of - I’ve had to constantly remind myself that social media wants us to feel that we’re never doing or showing/sharing enough - and we have to push past that. And films and goals like what you just did are exactly that - freakin’ big goals that take time and show you how far you can push yourself - on your own timeline. And dang man! This film was great man - agree with the others that it has the old school Ginger Runner vibe. Nice man.

Holy crap 2019 was a mind game. I relate to your intro a lot. Nearing the end of 2019 I seemed to obsess over failing at 2019 when, in fact, I kicked its ass. There was so much "new" in it that I think I obsessed over the "usuals" that I didn't get done.

Great job on the 100 mile week. I knew you could do it but you never know how the body is going to react to that kind of stress. I'm working on everyday activity for 2020 and focusing on running even if it is only one mile. Some are calling it my running streak. I'm at 16 days and 76.21 miles. The part about running that is an always recurring theme, for me, is the simple fact that being able to choose to run hard proves that things are pretty alright. If I can purposely stress my body for fun I must have a pretty damn good life- nothing special about me for running. It is special for me that I can run.

Awesome job Ethan!!! Proud of you bro.! My biggest recorded week was 93 back in 1989 (usually running 80 mile weeks) when I was just turned 17 years old before my senior year of high school. We won our sectionals and went to states! The next summer turning 18 and graduating from high school I ran 80 mile weeks to get ready for college cross country (5 mile races) where I ran under 28 minutes on super hilly courses. I took 25 years off and have been running again for a few years now and did a 5k in under 20 minutes. Thank you Ethan for your channel! - It really gets me out there and keeps me going!

Yeeeeeessssss! Ah Ethan this was so inspiring to watch. Thank you so much, especially for pointing out that for many of us a 100mile training week is huge! (Hell for me a fifty mile training week seems like a big challenge atm.) Let me add a training week goal to my goal projects, probably a time-based one when I figure out what a challenging/scary/just-about-doable target would be. I've been a bit out of the Ginger Running loop for a couple of months but looking forward to being back in 🙌 Huge congratulations!

congrats man! i did a 3 digit week once (109.88). i did it mostly with double days. it was very difficult, especially since i was at work 10-12 hours a day. lots of night running. every minute of my week was spent thinking about the next run and trying to recover from the previous run... rollers/ stretching/ eating/ drinking. it's crazy how rewarding it is to have accomplish that. and very doable

Man, this inspiring video is coming out at just the right time for me. Starting phase 2 of my diet on Monday and have been increasing my distance slowly but am going to also be upping the number of days I run. This video makes me feel I really can do it so thanks again for the inspiration Ethan. Happy new year.

Just completed my first 100 mile week yesterday. Hardest part for me was to mentally keep going. Thankfully the body is in good shape. Well done on your achievement. I watched half of this video a few months ago and was thinking about it last week. So I came back to it this morning to finish it off. 👍 cheers for the cool video

100 miles is definitively doable but you need that mental strength. My distance has increased almost to 80km when normally I used to do around 50-65km. One good way to challenge myself would be to get to 100km first and maybe later on to 100miles, all depends how I can manage my time with work/family.
Nice job Ethan! keep a good year 2020 and accomplish your future goals.

Good effort! This has really helped inspire me to plan a 100 mile week over Christmas. Great film and the music really enhanced it. It must help having such great people to run with!
