Gerry Brown is absolutely a class act. He plays with classic, timeless artists because he exudes class in both his playing and personality. A gentleman drummer indeed. Apart from him being a "groove master", my favorite part of this lesson was actually his display of humility and gratitude. He represents the drum community well.

  • @gerardoc2888
    @gerardoc2888 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Loved how smooth and relaxed he was as he grooved. Makes it look so easy. His rudiments/fundamentals are second nature. I am most impressed by his humility (despite being a world class drummer with the greatest musicians of all time), and how giving he is. A true gentleman and role model.

When Gerry mentions how he felt playing with Stevie Wonder and realizing it, feeling emotional, can't believe he's playing with him...I felt the same moment emotionally, when I was playing with Al Green..powerful stuff.

I actually loved three moments in this lesson :)
    1. The playing of the songs, cause it shows that doesn't matter how great drummer are you, the respect to music is number 1 attitude (serve the music, not your ego :) great example!
    2. That the moment, when Gerry points out that one of the most important skill is people skill, which plays very important role if you want to go far with famous artists.
    3. The moment when he Gerry shared the story of playing in gig with Steve and how emotional he was at that moment, and than having this reminder to himself of how fortune he is to be in this place. That show how much Garry values what he reached in his life, he is not just taking it for granted.
Amazing an inspiring lesson! Thank you Garry, thank you Drumeo for bringing such people that gives us not only technical lessons but also attitudes that supports us as drummers.
A, one more :) Garry being so much exited, shows how much he cares for us! Awesome.

Gerry's pitch on longevity in the industry is spot on. It is vital to be a good people person, and also to give the people that you work alongside a feeling of comfortability. As a drummer that is working towards a career in music, I understand the importance of getting along with the people that you work with, which in turn creates an environment that sparks creativity. I appreciate all that Drumeo and Gerry has contributed to the music industry--by being outlets that musicians can look towards in order to become the best that they can become.

I love Gerry's take on following the music instead of overplaying the piece. Playing what the music requires and playing to that flow is more important than individual skill. It's great to see someone like Gerry who is so talented play relaxed and disciplined. Also, the example he uses about observing Stevie Wonder's body language for visual cues is relatable and spot-on!

It's unbelievable how effortless he makes this look. I have strived for years to be so comfortable but my hands take a beating to the point I can barely play. AS OF THIS WRITING: 21 "vote down". I noticed that the haters NEVER post their own video of world-class drumming. I remember a jazz snob once saying double pedals/double kicks were totally "unnecessary". (This is for ANY music according to him) The performance he posted did nothing to prove his declaration. Note that I never see a pro drummer bash others. It's just the frustrated non-gigging basement kids.

The most important part of this lesson to me is the way Gerry not only shows his skill but the way he shows respect for all of the artists he has worked with, respect for the way to conduct himself with others that has earned him the respect from them and respect for the music he plays. He is humble and makes sure he is always listening to what is required from him and knows his next job relies on not only his performance but his attitude to the work ethics, being there early and having researched what he needs for that particular job is so very important. Giving respect earns respect in return, and he has earned that in spades.

Drumeo, I have become twice the drummer in the last two years that I had become in my first 12 or so. I credit myself for a much better work ethic, resilience, staying focused and last but not least, all of you at Drumeo. I learn something new almost everyday that I can apply to my everyday drumming. Great fills, slick grooves, and nasty chops is what I've always wanted. And m, while I'm not there yet, I am developing everyday steadily, and I thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to the online drumming community.

I think his advise about being easy to work with and being there to serve the music is so valuable. I got to experience this first hand when I was asked to play with a band having met the band members just 15 minutes before the gig and not knowing the set list. The music was not even in the genre I usually play. I just listened to the other musicians and played the songs without trying to do anything fancy. Afterwards, we received several compliments from the audience about how they enjoyed our band. Watching this lesson live, I was awed that Mr. Brown was so humble. It was obvious that he loves music and loves sharing his knowledge and experience.

First let me say I am 65 years old and played the drums back in the day when Gerry was playing with the greats... I remember watching him play and thinking , "Man I hope to be there one day." Well I drifted away from drumming in the mid 70's and started playing other instruments. Enough of that.... I am now back on the drums and using Drumeo as my guide to success. Gerry hit it on the head when he talked about getting along with the other folks around you. Not just as a drummer, but as part of the music company putting on the show. Maybe as a friend or someone that just listens to others and there thoughts ?? I would say when you get to be a great drummer, you will have many friends that know you as a great person as well. Keep up the great work Jared...

My Favourite Part of the Lesson was "this is not a sprint, this is not a marathon" People Skills Gerry talking about making sure you're giving the absolute best to the music, and the Artist what they need from you as a Drummer, to be comfortable and trusted. Gerry is such a cool Humble Drummer, Thanks Drumeo Thanks Sir Gerry

I love Drumeo! Helped me learn, helped me teach a few, and helped my little brother learn to groove as well! This is definitely the best online learning experience out there!!

My favorite part of the lesson was definitely the showmanship groove explination.

I won't deny the guy is humble and honest . He played for Uncle Stevie, that just makes it even better! From Gerry Brown we can see that character plays a big part to what you become .

I love his "less is more" style! He's just in the pocket always! Then he slaps you in the face with his amazing chops! I didn't see that coming! And even then, he's just so smooth....There's a lot of history in this man! Love it.

Hey guys . Wanted to share this for a while. Will make it short. Drummin seriously with Drumeo and classes for 5 years. First ever aud (Midnight Kahuna look them up in South Florida). Instead of covers did original music. AHH!! Forced me to REALLY learn to chart songs using easy beat and PEOPLE SKILLS all the way. Did it and went in with an open mind and easy going attitude. Kept me around for 3 months cause of my easy demeanor but I was obviously over my head for my first. Still keep in touch, NO HARD FEELING and I learned SO much with about playin and gettin along. I will admit it did hurt, but I stuck around for 3 months. Since then I worked HARDER and now am playin in a blues band (Holes in The Road). Mr Brown is 100% correct in many areas. Playin blues and ballads its hard not to fill the space and leave it open for others in the band. Easy to over play. People skills also include patience, when you have to sit quietly while other members sort out parts that have nothing to do with you, and when they are ready.......click click....click...FOUR! You HAVE to be. By the way, I was successful in my third audition thanks to you guys. Never give up.

Absolutely LOVE his "smoothness" and his backsticking!!! He makes it LOOK so buttery-smooth and adds a special "flavor" to the groove he's using it in!!! Hope to win that "signed" Yamaha-drum too!!!

My favourite part is the ballad: for someone with such skill and a bag(load) full of tricks, to play with such restraint, timing and respect to the song is a joy to see!
It goes to show you that what you don't play (although you got the chops) is just as important as what you choose to show...

I love the first song Gerry plays.
The discipline in his groove and how groovy he makes the whole song.
Above all I have learnt alot from the whole lesson.
Keep up the good work Jared and Drumeo.

My favorite part was the way Gerry ended his solo quietly and how he played with so much dynamic variation.

Wow! Gerry just made me realize I have been groovin' to his playing for more than 40 years?...Taught myself to drum to all those R&B tunes not knowing I was drumming along with this master!...Awesome player Gerry! Don't stop!

I love the it when Gerry Brown tells us something about "life skills" and responsibility for other people and the other musicians. He shows a kind of true modesty. He's a huge artist but he doesn't display his greatness at all.I'm deeply impressed!

Loved how he is able too groove, impress and be flashy, without overdoing anything and having to loose something on the way .

LOVE his comments about handicapping bass players - about remembering space, conversation with your bass player, etc.
    "a rest is your friend."
