- It was an honour for Drumeo to welcome Thomas Pridgen to our studio to record a lesson on Applying Rudiments To The Drum-Set. Thomas plays drums unlike anyone else I've ever seen before. Such a crazy amount of precision, power, and speed.

Dylan Eppers in one of his clinics he said changing gripping is very important, so your hands don't lock up.
Thomas was 11 or 12 years old when I saw him play for the first time. I worked at guitar center in Oakland, (which moved to El Cerrito). Every day Thomas came into the store and played for hours. My boss was putting it on me to stop him from damaging our new roland electric drums, but I hated to do it. Anyway Thomas didn't just have talent and amazing skill, but he spent every single minute that he could, playing. He worked and worked and worked at it constantly from at least the age of 11, maybe longer. I remember Troy Luccketta telling his grandma that he went through the whole book called syncopation like it was nothing and at the end told him there just wasn't anything more he can teach him. He was already a master. Shout out to you Thomas. It is great to see your success.

@@Mrjazzzery I would drop managers name but that could seriously go wrong. I just hope for Thomas he continues to enjoy playing and continues to share his knowledge with the world. He is an inspiration to all drummers. My point before was, the skills he has, were developed over his whole lifetime and with consistent, persistent, even constant, hard work. At an early age he had amazing skills. Seemed natural, but truth be known, he was a very hard worker that never paused to take a break. Sorry if that sounded past tense. I believe, but don't know, that he is still working incredibly hard, at keeping up and improving.

Nah any band nerd can hear how he's able to surround his notes with silence/articulates like a boss. When he's talking about learning rudiments growing up that is 100% what a great music teacher makes you do. Drilling you endlessly on the basics. The fundamentals of musicaltiy are universal to any instrument.
That's true at some degree, I began with marching drums, then drums, then percs, nowadays having fun with the bass and different variations of synthesizers as well and having understood some rhythmical patterns really helped. But the whole melodic and harmonic thing is harder for me to get behind because of my rhythmical preoccupations. I wonder how his inner clock is ticking 😂
And: learning perfect doubles enhances the play vastly. Lucky who learned in a Marching Band for instance. Zach Hill also is a Doublenut.

I remember when this kid hit the scene. Hard. Then I hear that that kid is playing with the Mars Volta and I'm like 'WHAT?!, but yeah, makes perfect sense'. This episode could've been a week long and I'd sit through the whole thing. What an awesome dude. So much passion and energy and he's just 'it's what I do, man, so can you, here's how, no secret'. Big love.

Saw this guy play with The Mars Volta around 2008 and man, what a killer show. It was practically a 3 hour long set that never stopped.

From 48:20 to 52:30 is straight real talkin truth. Thomas drops some serious knowledge that so many artists miss. Doesn't matter how hard it was, it only matter how good it sounds- a truth that can be applied to any art form.
And the next part is great too. He's all, "I don't know this song, so I might mess it up." Then completely aces it.

Damn at 37:36 he explains converting a 4/4 groove to odd is easy if you learn to syncopate the hihat accent, then chain the two together. that is genius. I always knew it worked that way, but never stated it as a solid step for practicing.

Pridgen is a pure technician. He has that consistent sound that comes only from the truly gifted and determined. A master.
name me one drummer better than this, I honestly believe hes the Goat more than Gojiras drummer or the drummer from Death (*Human album)
What I love is that he's Pure Technician (as you say) AND Complete Animal AT THE SAME TIME. He's completely in control but the effect is completely WILD all the time, which makes it The Most Fun to watch.

pumpalBo Drumeo covers a lot of different skill levels and genres. For the sake of how successful it's become, its worth noting that what is boring to you is most likely useful to someone who is beginning or learning other things.
Versus Terminus I agree to that.. didn't mean to bash Drumeo in any way. As a matter of fact I personally am a member and "own" two of their packs, which had helped me a lot. What I stated here is of course my personal opinion only.

Of all the Amazing guest drummers on Drumeo, Pridgen is easily the best at explanation and teaching his techniques.
Thomas plays great and knows the history. Knows a lot about the guys before him and has respect for the craft. That is supercool!

This is a great lesson. I generally don't follow Pridgen because his style is far from what I want to be, or could be even if I wanted to. :) But the exercises he teaches here, and the ideas he shared are already proving beneficial. Thanks Drumeo for bringing us these great drummers and their incredible knowledge.

This Thomas dude is incredibly fast. His speed comes mostly from sheer strength and endurance. Like he says "if it's difficult, do it till it isn't". Obviously Berklee was a big influence. To be totally immersed in just drums for a year or two will do this to you. Very talented indeed!

The passion, honesty and even the frustrating obstacles he has had to overcome emanates clearly through this enlightening lesson. Thomas is a drummer who just loves what he does. He articulates so well, where one feels and understands, just how much time and dedication he has put into fine tuning his playing. This lesson is just full of helpful tips. His playing is mind blowing along with his agility, knowledge and dexterity. Thomas is a world class player a very humble man who can only be admired. I especially love his shout out to fellow Australian drummer Virgil Donati. Special mention to the hand/finger exercise starting @1:04:28 - there is just so much packed into this lesson. Thank you Thomas Pridgen and your wonderful grandmother, I'm sure like the rest of us, she is smiling down on you with love.
Incredible how many people on youtube are correcting him about time signatures when they have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. The bossa in the feet and the five stroke roll can be interpreted a number of ways. At that tempo, I hear it in two (the feet) rather than four. The repeating 5 stoke roll is felt in three (the number of eighth notes involved), so what you have is the hands in 3/8 and the feet in 2/4. Or at a slower tempo it would feel more like 3/4 over 4/4.
Maybe they're correcting him because he meant to say he's playing the five stroke roll in 3/8, but instead said he's playing it in 5. And this clarification helps beginners who might take that explanation at face value. Especially because he then goes on to say 1 2 3 4 5 without adding the 6 which is a rest. Anyone trying to play the 5 stroke roll in 5/16 will then end up with RRLLRLLRRL instead of RRLLR(rest)LLRRL(rest), and it won't sound the same as Thomas's exercise. No harm in pointing it out here.
@@shreyasiyengar8408 - thank you, you are correct about the rest making the pattern take up 6 16th notes, Thomas need to say his five stroke was in the space of a 3/8 measure.
This episode is - for me - the most valuable drum lesson on the internet!
Also I once played a show with Memorials and aside from being awesome musicians, those guys and girl smoked so much weed backstage that it set off the fire alarm and the fire brigade came and had to secure the venue :D
I bought my first pair of drum sticks and a pad 4 months ago. I watched this video before I got a kit (about 30 days later) and had absolutely no idea what he was doing in any of the drumming after the jazz track stopped. It's amazing how I can see all of the rudiments he's implementing only 3 months in. He's a wizard and this is so helpful.

I'm really liking T. Pridgen more and MORE! I learned a LOT in this video... and I didn't feel self-conscious or like I didn't belong in that room. It felt more like a buddy drummer giving you pointers.
Nobody in the world makes Dw Drums sound this good. It's only Thomas and the way HE plays them. They always have a nice attack and a great tone to them.

Takes me back to my first view of Omar Hakim's awesome solo, 'I Burn For You'. Thomas Pridgen truly has the technique, brilliance and confidence to match, but dare I say he's really upped the musicality, and a star for his generation. Awesome.

But listening to him talk about his background and talking about the state of the music industry in general has won me (and probably others like me) over

What you put in is what you get out! Thomas Pridgen was the guy that brought me past walls I thought I'd never accomplish! It's never a hobby when it's over 100k hours of practice... It's a passion, especially when you studied it as well ;)
to me, these kinds of lessons are the best for me because im always wondering why its so important to practice rudiments and Thomas demonstrates exactly why we all need to.

Years ago I was a member of the NARD(national assn of rudimental drummers) and am glad to see rudiments still being taught and embraced.

Thomas Pridgen is awesome. I watched this like 7 times now. He explained odd numbers with different lead hands very well and good ideas for working on the weak hand.. Most people just get on here and show off, but he made it very educational and just fun to watch. Like other drummers, I crippled myself by not taking the time to know what rudiments were, even though I was playing a few and didn't know it. This video made it very clear.. thank you Drumeo, and Mr. Pridgen. Why not take the hi hat shoe off tho?.. i play in just socks all the time.
I love those doubles at 7:41. A lot of nutrition for learning drummers in this video.. I like how he explained the odd numbers to change drums left or right.. especially the 5's that was really helpful. He's so fast tho it's hard to even enter his world.. He just knows what he's playing. One of the best drum videos.. right here. Pridgen is badass.

I got so much respect for the fact he doesn't use a double kick. I feel drummers require a crutch now days when they should just put in the necessary time to be a beast! Sir Pridgen is a beast!
David Alfonso Jojo Mayer is another fine example of someone that can pull every trick people require two pedals or a double bass pedal to do with one single pedal.

I love this guy! I can't believe I never heard of him until today. I've been listening to great drummers since the early 70s. Glad to discover another one in Thomas Pridgen!

This GUY is one of my top idols as a drummer! Being a drum instructor, I always try to teach my students how to read music and that repetition is important in drumming because muscle memory is important as well obviously. My biggest goal in the students is for them to get ideas from reading music, but then make it their own rendition as well! Props to Drumeo! You guys kill it
That kit is amazing. No moongel/dampening and it sings so well (I'm sure their recording setup is great too). Nothing like DW.
I'm pretty sure its gated to hell; sounds a little too choked to me for that to be natural.
And those signature HUGE hi hats! 15" or even 16" (?!?!?!?) I think.
I went to see Thundercat, saw these hats on stage and knew immediately who the drummer was.
Chris McCartney And you can here the compression ducking when he talks, highly enigneered, but yes, well done. kick is punchier than sounds good on record (typically), but is good for deconstructing....

I have been able to get one of my toms to have a even ring with no dampening and a very nice drop to the ring. not sure how i did it. haven't done it since. but i almost guarantee that he knows exactly how to tune his set every single time he plays. Some drummers even tune by feeling the tension on the drum head. but yeah the pre and post production probably did help clear up the sound but not much

I’ve come back to this video and watch it all the way through every year. The amount of information in this is endless. And it always teaches me something new. The concepts are so broad. So that’s why I pick only 3-4 of these concepts and dive into them each year.
I remember I had lessons. for 3 months then I got into guitar lessons. But I kept up with the druming. Just like Thomas said, I would play smashing pumpkins, RHCP and the pepper's weren't hard, but smashing pumpkins I would just be at the kit, with my jaw on the ground. But I would just play thru it. Learn as it goes. Then you start seeing it come Together and THAT moment was my favorite feeling in the world. I am a recovering addict so I've had euphoria before but no drug compares to being on stage or in the moment on the drums. No drug can do that.
I've watched all of these videos and this intro is a grand slam homerun knocked out of the park.
