  • In this video, we had the privilege to have Stanton Moore in our studios. Stanton is a drummer and educator from New Orleans. He helped found the New Orleans-based essential funk band Galactic, whose first album Coolin' Off led to nearly 200 gigs per year for ten straight years.
This lesson is on Musical Mileage and Stanton will show you how to get the most out of a particular pattern. Enjoy!

There's no other drummer who, just listening to him play, makes me want to practice harder. There's a joy in his playing that makes me want to feel that same joy. Thanks, Stanton, for sharing with us not only your playing but your insights.

I met Stanton at. Thew Jazz Festival, n in Toronto, and my lovely wife had bought me Groove Alchemy, for my Birthday. And I had the opportunity, to tell him how much I appreciated his contribution, to the drumming world, and he said that it was a labour of Love, and the challenges than he encountered when writing writing the book, and at that moment I sensed his true genuine humility, and he is in deed a servant of " The Groove, T hank you Stanton and a huge amount of Love to You and Yours!

all the complaints about his technique or doubles are hilarious because:
    1) technique is a way to get to music, and stanton is a great musician (not the other way around)
    and
    2) he specifically addresses "lazy" rolls, and the difference between open doubles and his "lazy buzzes," so everyone complaining either didn't watch the video past the beginning, or didn't comprehend the overarching point of musical mileage.
    jus' sayin'.

Campbell Youngblood-Petersen And if you think about it, 99.9% of drummers out there don't even know how to play both ways (open and closed rolls) to even criticize his playing. Or they are not familiar with New Orleans drumming. Or both.

This guy calls anyone attention since the very moment he starts to play and swing his way. It's a joy to see him playing, the way he lives music. Technically, I don't know,.. he might be just another great drummer, sure, but motivationally, he's unique. Thank you, mate!

Stanton Moore is THE man!!! What an awesome video, he's one of the only drummer's that actually understands how to create MUSIC on the drums and not just play an arbitrary pattern because it "sounds cool". Stanton is forever awesome b/c he's showing everyone that you can make music with not that much technical facility which is sooooooo incredibly useful. It is so useful that his ideas will give drummers a musical language to use that is more practical to use than learning "technical coodination" patterns, which in turn will give drummers a "voice of their own" on the kit & not sound like you learned everything you play is out of a book. (I've heard plenty of drummers that sound like a book being played lol)

I've watched this lesson probably more than 10 times, the whole thing, this is for me the best Drumeo lesson, Stanton is a great teacher, i used wanna learn a bunch of staff, and always when i was in a gig situation, i was able to play just a few, now i feel very confortable with doing maybe just a few, but i can put it in many musical situations, in different ways that you won't believe is actually the same thing... thanks Stanton, saw you playing with galactic, you showed me a whole new world of drumming, what a drummer, thanks Drumeo, Benny Greb also amazing, i've learn a lot.

I haven't read all 130 comments, but just in case nobody mentioned it. The opening part of the lesson is a DRAG, not a Ruff. Ruff's are short single stroke rolls, drags all use the diddle as a grace note. Stanton is one of the best and most musical drummers playing today, and he has tons of technique. When he plays, he always plays MUSIC (as opposed to playing technique). He USES technique, but it's so relaxed and organic, you just don't notice it. His technique is exceptionally broad and incorporates the entire history of the drum set, his taste, dynamics, feel, intuition, and knowledge are way beyond what most drummers will ever achieve. He's incredibly articulate, a natural teacher, and obviously very smart (he owns several companies including Crescent Cymbals and Stanton Moore Drums).

Ive been digging Stanton for years, considering I'm from Louisiana, and relate to New Orleans Grooves. Plus I didn't know he was a Great Teacher. Let alone, inspiring. I didn't realize Ive been doing a 3 stroke ruff all these years. Let alone, know how to incorporate it in a groove. This changes things for me Greatly. My drumming is going to a knew level. Thanks Drumeo, and Stanton! Best Instructional Video Period!

As I am learning, I start to see what is being done and how incredible the Artist is. Stanton has brought an entire background and history of Living to the drum set. Through this medium I can see how his life has expanded to include others and has been enriched. Maybe a purpose of Art is to live life beautifully, that is artistically. Stanton does this not only in his playing as expected but in his teaching and communication. In this lesson I have learned a Life lesson. This is culture. You live it. You breath it. Its part of your soul. Its native. Whether Mardi Gras Indian or First Nation or You. Its native to the spirit. Thanks Drumeo for your broadcasts and thanks especially to the guest Artist. Stanton is one of my favorite drummers most recent. Tom Breichtlein is also bad azz - his Robben Ford stuff is awesome.
