- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is amazing because according to the EPA it gets an amazing 50 MPG in the city. That's astounding because it wasn't all that long ago when only a few tiny economy cars could even hope to mange to squeeze so many miles from a single gallon of gas. In fact even the first generation of tiny hybrid cars like the Honda insight could not equal this number. Today, this family sedan capable of carrying 5 people and all of their stuff in comfort can accomplish this feat. In another accurate, fun and informative TFLcar video review Roman gives you his take on the new 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid as he get up close and personal with the new hybrid Honda family sedan.

Now after owning a Touring model for 3 months I remain delighted. We live at 500' and my daily commute takes me to sea level and back up several hundred feet and then back home. If I get up to speed relatively swiftly and then go onto battery power as much as possible (not really too hard with this car) I have gotten 44 mpg average for the tank. Of note too is the car's computer came up with about the same reading. It's a smooth and quiet car with quite lively steering. Braking power is very strong and actually most of the time is just increased resistance from extra generated power. The electric motor is seamless in its power delivery. Under some conditions the motor seems out of sync with car speed and throttle pedal input but you get used to it as its usually building up its store of energy for the next trek on electric power. Honda did an excellent job on this one and should be very proud.

they put the camera only on one side because they dont want people to be looking right (at the screen) when merging or turning left, thats why the left mirror is con vexed or curved to give a wider field of view.
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if the camera is on the left mirror of the car in the European versions where the driver is on the right?
Much appreciated review, Roman. You're right that a $3 a gallon, the premium for the Accord Hybrid is a tough sell for many consumers. But at $5-$6 a gallon (not unimaginable) that premium is far less burdensome. Kudos to Honda for some true engineering innovation. It's been a while.
If talking about cost you must look also at depreciation. You typically don't lose 100% of the hybrid premium after few years. According to KBB 5 year total cost for Hybrid EX-L is 35,930 while regular Accord EX-L it's 37,478. That's at 15K miles but some people may drive lot more.
Lucien E Very good points, Lucien. And then there's the satisfaction of denying more than a few bucks to oil companies and limiting the impact on climate change. Of course, the latter benefits don't apply to Republicans. :)
So, what a lot of people don't mention is that if you get the touring, the price gap between V6 and Hybrid is WAY smaller and you can recoup the price difference in 2 years. I think it's worth it.

Great review! I recently learn with my CRV by accident that if I press the large volume/select button it will also turn on the radio instead pressing the smaller power on button for the radio. Mike
Hi Roman, reason Honda didn't put lane watch on the left side was that they thought it would be a safety issue if you would the look opposite direction from real direction and you might miss something. I guess that could be solved by putting camera screen right next inside or part of the left mirror.
A great car for somewhere like Bangkok where I spend hrs stuck in traffic. I just like the gliding feeling of electric drive, even if the engine is charging that feeling is still there. This car is also well priced in Thailand, about 1.8M baht. Compare that to a 320i lux or sport, around 2.5M Baht. The deal breaker for me tho is the boot. I need occasionally to do an IKEA run or similar and I can't slide those flat packs in there!
Love the irony of the blade key keeping valets out of your trunk, yet you'll hand over the entire key set 99% of the time, so they have a way to hang it.
It has a secondary keyring loop that is available for use when the key is removed from the fob

Alright here is your break.
I hate to break it to you, but those valet drivers have strings and tags and split rings just for the purpose of attaching to a fob with no keyring. Any that don't wouldn't get to drive my car. Being prepared and professional separates those who get the job from those who aren't ready to do the work.
I test drove the EX-L today and I love it. I want the Hybrid Touring model, however there is none to be found within 1000 miles. I wonder why?

I have a 2014 plug-in hybrid accord and it gets way more than 13 miles on full I commute about 19 miles and I can make it almost to my office with power is in rush-hour traffic
I have about 25k on my accord now. I average about 100 mpg. my best was 120mpg average. lowest was 45. Road trips will net high 40's. The car does tricks.... such as charge itself on command while driving. This charge mode comes in handy if you are going to be picking up people who want to drive EV to experience it. I guess if you were going to a Drive in and you were coming from work with a dead battery hold down the HV button and the charge mode will start. I like to use it at the end of road trips so when I get to my destination I can run silent. I also have a Ford Cmax energi. The Honda is a cruise ship compared to the ford. Download the app and use it. In hot weather the car is more efficient of course. On a hot day when I go to lunch with co workers when we are done eating I open the app and Preconditioning begins. Its super trick to get in your car and have it cool already. BIG TIP.. If you live somewhere cold use preconditioning to warm the car while plugged in. Also set the charge time to end near your departure time. This will use the heat from charging which is vented into the cabin to warm the car and boost the power of the pre conditioner. I hardly ever use the heater. The seat heaters are awesome and its trick to have them in the back seat. The head lights are so good. They are the same as the 911.
If you get a flat tire make sure to tow the car to the dealer. Firestone does not carry the tires and the wheels have three sensors imbedded into the rim. The wheels are forged. They are super light and strong. Do not change the wheels. The ACC is my commuting pleasure. Its very reliable and you will not like driving other non ACC cars. Perks may be a bit better in So-Cal I get free Toll Road pass, free parking meters in some areas and of course HOV access. Some junky things are all related to Hondas Nav, radio etc. These have always been a weakness in Hondas and this car is unfortunately not immune to this Achilles Heel. Your Car will get looks. Regular people will stare. Its a handsome car. It launches from red lights like a rocket. The off the line torque is so thick and rich. You do not need a charging station at your house. this car will charge faster than your cel phone with a charging station and three hours at home. The CHARGE CORD IS NEARLY $600. So find a way to lock it I carry a lock and cable. I posted a video of me locking it. over 62 mph the battery goes to sleep and the earth dreams engine sips fuel when you slow the engine turned off. OOH when the battery is depleted the Earth dreams turns on then warms up. The Pollution control systems needs to be warm to work properly and you will probably get slightly annoyed that the engine runs for so long to warm the system. Welcome to the highest MPG in the USA.

I test drove this car today and i was surprised to found out that i enjoyed it. 50mpgs is great even if in reality its a bit lower. The only dislike i had was the radio/infotainment setup. trying to connect my phones to bluetooth was a hassle. The one camera thing is odd, but i didn't use it anyway. Rear view mirror and the head turn are still better.

If the Accord is near luxury or getting close to it Honda is going to have to up their game with the Acura. Fun to see how future tech becomes the norm.
Agree. Acura is bit behind I think: no lane watch and the Acura nav/infotainment system is almost 100% identical to top RLX model. Hopefully TLX will be able to widen gap again.
I definitely agree with what he said. Had I have the cash & in search for a new car, I would buy me the sport version with a 6 speed manual transmission. Why? Well, the fun of driving a manual. Reliability and not to worry about battery exchanging, parts failing, and lastly, I can work on the car by myself without towing it to a dealer.
Zipcar had one of those available. Car looks bad-ass and drives like a spaceship. Awesome.

You stated this car does not have a transmission and it is like the Chevy Volt. This car looks to be a good car but it is nothing like a Volt other than they both have lithium battery's. It does have a transmission it has a CVT to be exact. This info is not hard to find I just read the Honda Web site. Do a little research prior to a review next time. GOOD REVIEW just some bad info.
Hi Josh thanks for the comment but this is exactly why we are always worried about the comments section. The new Accord Hybrid does not have a CVT or anything else that might be considered a transmission. Thanks for the nice words, but please stop spreading false information.
I'm not looking to have a comment war with you. I enjoy watching your videos and reviews. I was just surprised when you said the car doesn't have a transmission when it says clear as day on Honda's Web site it has a eCVT transmission. On a side note you should care about what people say in your comment areas. I think you may care a little or you wouldn't have responded to my comment.

My apologies to Roman. If that article is correct then the 2014 Accord is nearly setup exactly like the Chevy Volt. BUT why does Honda's Web site say it has a eCVT? Does Honda find it easier to call it a eCVT/hybrid setup rather than explain what it is and how it works?
Joshua C Exactly! Calling it (the electric traction motor) an eCVT mimics the nomenclature of what's commonly used in the industry. To be correct, there is a gear set which transfers power to the drive wheels but it's just that. In this design Honda has the electric motor providing all of the go power from stop to about 45 mph at which time the gas engine can be coupled in and out by means of an integrated clutch. It's brilliant and in practice works very seamlessly. Even at freeway speeds the car will alternate between full electric drive to clutching the gas engine in and out as needed.
If I didn't have to drive up to 500' from sea level and back again on my daily voyages It's pretty easy to see substantially better mileage than I already do. I'm quite thrilled with the car and feel fortunate that my dealer was able to get one built to order for us when they still are quite scarce.

I'm a little confused, whats the point of a hybrid if you can only travel about 13 miles in electric only mode? Exactly how does that work?

This seems to be the best sedan to come out in it's class this year. The sonata and camry are not going to beat it. Maybe the altima when it comes out who knows
I cross-shopped the Altima with the Accord back in '08 and bought the Accord as it was perceptively better in quality even after just a short test drive. Nissan will have had to really up their game to be competitive with Honda.
Yes this is an outstanding car. One point though, my 2005 Honda Insight-1st Gen. gets 55 MPG (Winter/City) -- 85 MPG (Summer/Highway with velocity 55)....
What's the point of the EV mode if it only last half a mile or shuts off before then if you give it any gas?

With full battery it could last up to 2-3 miles (and you keep very light foot on gas). Not quite as useful here unless you have more range like the PHEV (and you can recharge it using external charger). EV makes most sense in slow stop & go traffic where EV is most efficient. Or you want to drive 'silent' for short time:-).
It's perfect for moving the car in/out of the garage, or moving your car so someone you've blocked can leave. You don't need to turn on the engine, saving gas and wear. Also, it's great for creeping through drive thru restaurant lines, or if you get stuck in gridlock on the highway when there's an accident. It's useful for basically any time you need the car to move, but not be truly driven.
Great review Roman. For the amount of money that this car, the question on the back of everyone's mind is ... why not get an acura or lexus if you coming across the the 35k mark?
35K is fully loaded (adapt. cruise control, LED lights, Nav, LDW, BSM,...). A base Acura TL is 7K more and base ES is 7-8K more. But TLX will get hybrid option as well next year.

never had a Honda but I love that brand!! They are so reliable and smooth running , that they are even better than Lexus and Infinity!! In Europe they even don't need their " LUXURY NAME*Accura, because everybody knows that they are good! The NSX was just called a Honda because they didn't have to convice the People that they are really good!!
Best car in its class in my opinion. If I were the designer of this car, I would have reduced the battery pack size to have a bigger trunk and get rid of EV mode altogether (if possible at all)
Cold winter temperatures will greatly reduce your mpg in to the 30 mpg range!
I would definitely take that over the mpg I get during the winter: 21-22 city mpg

Roman, the release for the gas and trunk next to the door, on the floor, has been there since I owned my first Accord in 1982...don't know where you've been for the past 30 some years, or you:-)just aren't very observant. REALLY!

The battery itself has an 8-year/100,000 mile warranty and yes, Touring model only for nav.

By the time car recoup the cost for being a hybrid, the battery will need replacement.

If they did that the car would have like a 60+/40 split weight and would not be weighted evenly. You would def notice.

I'm interested in the Honda Accord plug in. If I'm commuting about 100 miles/day, 95% highway miles ~70-75 mph, would I see much benefit of a plug in or regular hybrid over a conventional gas vehicle? I believe it uses the gas engine exclusively at relatively high speeds (65+), is that correct?

Quite normal for a hybrid actually. Stop and go driving in the city allows the regenerative braking to recharge the battery more, boosting mpg. Less braking on the highway means less battery recharging and thus less mpg.
$3600 more and it'll take 5-6 years to get back. Fair enough. What about the difference in resale?
That being said, one could argue that you pay $5000 more to upgrade to a higher trim level for leather, nav, etc, which you never end up getting back. It's about the driving experience.

Batteries rarely go out in hybrids. I have over 300,000 on my Prius, never a problem. Look up battery failures on hybrids and what you find is people theorizing about it because they never go bad, and there are so few cars that have run over 300,000 miles.
I would never get a hybrid unless I drove for a living, which I do. The maintenance costs are minimal, have never had to have breaks replaced.
I did have to replace a computer control chip at 289,000 for $1,200. The only people I have seen having to replace those are cabbies and they are always at around 300,000.
It has to rebuild the chassis for install the engine.
And for the new, it will got the new look.

this car is 43,000 dollars in Canada in total unless you settle for the door mat like cloth seat and plastic steering wheel and other crappy basic stuffs. The trend is auto makers use all the lowest grade materials for the interior in order to kinda force you to go for 5000 dollars more package to make a lot more money. Cloth is not an expensive thing while Honda or Toyota never explained why they have to use the lowest grade of cloth in the market. shameless auto makers.

Get real bad review , why you don't talk real stuff , like how the car handles in a storm , or when its foggy outside hows the defoggers work , how it handle in snow and ice ,, like your test are all about perfect driving conditions , your going to get someone hurt ,, how about driving down a canyon with high winds rain and fog so we can see if the car feels safe

Nice review Roman. I agree with you that they should have gone with cameras on both sides of the car. The metal key in the fob is neat, my '08 Hyundai also has that. Suggestion, if you look back at this video, you'll see that you spend a lot of time talking to the car or the ground. Face the camera that's facing you and talk to your audience. Keep up the good work.
