2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Review and Road Test

  • As of October, the most fuel efficient mid-sized sedan in America is the Honda Accord. Or so Honda says. After all, Ford has been trumpeting a matching 47 MPG combined from their Fusion. Who is right? And more importantly, can the Accord get Honda back into the hybrid game after having lost the first initial hybrid battles with their maligned Integrated Motor Assist system? Honda invited us to sample the 2014 Accord Hybrid as well as a smorgasbord of competitive products to find out.
    I have always been a fan of "elegant and restrained" styling which explains my love for the first generation Lexus LS. That describes the 2014 Accord to a tee. Like the regular Accord, the hybrid is devoid of sharp creases, dramatic swooshes, edgy grilles or anything controversial. This is a slightly different take than the Accord Plug-in which swaps the standard Accord bumper for a bumper with a slightly awkward gaping maw. In fact, the only thing to indicate that something green this way someday are some grille inserts and LED headlamps on the top-level Touring model.
    Being the drivetrain geek that I am, what's under the hood of the Accord hybrid is more exciting than the Corvette Stingray. Seriously. Why? Because this car doesn't have a transmission in the traditional sense. Say what? Let's start at the beginning.
    Things start out with the same 2.0L four-cylinder engine used in the Accord plug-in. The small engine is 10% more efficient than Honda's "normal" 2.0L engine thanks to a modified Atkinson cycle, an electric water pump, cooled exhaust gas return system, and electric valve timing with a variable cam profile. The engine produces 141 horsepower on its own at 6,200 RPM and, thanks to the fancy valvetrain, 122 lb-ft from 3,500-6,000 RPM.
    The engine is connected directly to a motor/generator that is capable of generating approximately 141 horsepower. (Honda won't release specific details on certain drivetrain internals so that's an educated guess.) Next we have a 166 horsepower, 226 lb-ft motor that is connected to the front wheels via a fixed gear ratio. Under 44 miles per hour, this is all you need to know about the system. The 166 horsepower motor powers the car alone, drawing power from either a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, or the first motor/generator. Over 44 miles per hour, the system chooses one of two mods depending on what is most efficient at the time. The system can engage a clutch pack to directly connect the two motor/generator units together allowing engine power to flow directly to the wheels via that fixed gear ratio.
    Pay careful attention to that. I said fixed gear ratio. When the Accord Hybrid engages the clutch to allow the engine to power the wheels directly (mechanically), power is flowing via a single fixed ratio gear set. The fixed gear improves efficiency at highway speeds, reduces weight vs a multi-speed unit and is the reason the system must operate in serial hybrid mode below 44 mph. There is another side effect at play here as well: below 44 MPH, the system's maximum power output is 166 horsepower. The 196 combined ponies don't start prancing until that clutch engages.
    So why does Honda call it an eCVT? Because that fits on a sales sheet bullet point and the full explanation doesn't. Also, a serial hybrid can be thought of as a CVT because there is an infinite and non-linear relationship between the engine input and the motor output in the transaxle.

    Another THUMBS UP Alex! Excellent reviews. Like the final review at the end. I watch many reviews. Some try to be funny, some are too serious and boring. Some aren't as detailed and only focus on 0-60 or rear seat leg room. You cover it all Alex! Thank you! I've been saving now for a year to buy a new car cash so no payments, or Interest fees. There are a few reasons. According to Toyota, the average transaction price on the Prius is around 26,500. That's not too far off the base price of the Accord Hybrid. Comparably equipped the price comparison is better with a difference ranging from $100 on the high end to about $2,000 on the low end. (We got more firm numbers on competitive cross shops after we shot the video.) Lastly, cross shop numbers indicate the Prius is shopped against the 4-cyl Accord already.

    This is one the best Honda Accord Hybrid reviews that I've read and watched. Thank you, Alex, and congratulations! Subscribing to your channel in a heartbeat. Sincerely, Alex (owner of 2001 Honda Accord and a fan of Honda). By the way, I'd appreciate a clarification. In TheCarConnection's review of Honda Accord Hybrid I've read: "The steering doesn't feel quite as crisp at turn-in as in the other Accord models-possibly a result of those different dampers, or the somewhat less sticky run-flat tires." As far as I know, this car has regular tires. What do you think about this: a mistake, bad wording or there exist a run-flat tires option for this car? If not, are you aware of such aftermarket options?

    69db is very quiet for the mid-size segment. There is a bit more engine noise than the standard 4cyl model however.
    Yikes. Value questions. I would say that the hybrid is in general never the "economical" option vs the base model. It takes so long to "save" money that your reason for buying one needs to be "because you want one" not because it will "save money." Yes, it will save gas, but the break even point on expenses is somewhere around 9 years at 15K a year.

    Excellent review - thank you! Turns out I may need to replace my 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, and your review was very helpful, especially how you compare & contrast against the vehicle's competitors. Great explanation of the power train - other reviews did not discuss this aspect very clearly. The only thing I am curious about is how the drive train behaves under heavy loads (up hills while carrying lots of cargo): my Fusion would instantly shift to gasoline mode and provide power at the expense of fuel economy. Was wondering if the Accord's gas engine operates at a high RPM to generate the necessary electricity or how it meets the increased demand for power. And I agree with you that the Fusion has less-than-impressive fuel economy - I'm only getting 37.6 combined from mine (yet I'm able to get 52 mpg out of a rented Elantra, so it's no my driving habits!)

    There is a review of the Avalon's twin, the Lexus ES300h on the channel. I prefer the Avalon in the ES vs Avalon mashup. The hybrid drivetrain is the same as the Camry Hybrid so although new to the Avalon it has been around for a while and has proved reliable.

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide
    @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like the Accord but I find car shopping is like shoe shopping, we all have our preferences. I would certainly suggest trying the Altima V6, it has excellent fuel economy numbers and more power than you would think. The Fusion is a good alternative if you like gadgets and the Mazda 6 has great ride and handling but the infotainment system is maddening. Personally, I like the plug-in Accord, if you can get pack the sticker price and the "bold" grille (and live in CA.)

    wow, well thanks sir, that was a fast reply..
    I think if i get one, which I'm comparing which family sedan is better in terms of ride, comfort, noise, fuel economy, reliability and visibility.
    I have the Accord on top of all the other mid sizes.
    I'd prob take the 4cyl instead, but the Hybrid is a very nice comeback.
    Thanks for the fast reply

    You would want that match up before a Camry vs Accord review?

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide
    @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not yet but I expect one at some point. Honda is always careful to not mention anything about future products, however if I were a betting man I would think the 2-motor system might be found in a refreshed TL at some point after the 3-motor system launches in the RLX. I would also say that any future Acura product would depend on the sales of the hybrid Accord and production capacity which is constrained as our sources tell us.

    Alex, I've got to know, with this hybrid drivetrain, I'm sure driving Highway 17 is no problem, but what about prolonged inclines like the I5 grapevine? It sounds like direct drive is too tall a ratio to work on such an incline without electric assistance, but I've got to wonder if there's enough juice to maintain speed over the mountains.

    Alex I saw your review for the 2013 Toyota Avalon. Can you do one for the 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid? We are a little skeptical especially because it is the first time that Toyota is launching the Hybrid Version. We liked the overall drive and the newly designed interior. The acceleration and the braking responds well and so is the overall comfort and styling. We need a decent review to go ahead with the deal.

    I agree with you about preferences. You might want a car that looks very sexy but drives ok.. someone else might want a very bland look and go for the Japanese. I'm open minded, if i see that the Optima, drives, corners, feels, and has more power and feels smoother then ill go for it. but again, like you said, it's all about preference.
    I REALLY enjoy your videos a lot.. you put so much info on every single car.thanks for that

    The closest I could get to that would be the Acura ILX, we had the wagon about a year ago (it's an old video so apologies in advance)but since the ILX is due for a refresh in the next year or so I doubt I'll be able to get the current model.

  • @alanhernandez338

    The numbers are amazing (specifically that a car with that much interior space can get that much fuel economy while accelerating in a decent range). But I'm a little concerned that all that fancy complicated electric transmission (?) could malfunction and cause problems. In my experience electric problems have always been my worst car repair expenses.

    I really like the drivetrain in this Accord Hybrid. 1 concern I have though is the lack of engine RPM control at higher speeds, say 70MPH or faster. The engine RPM may be faster than needed because there are no gears and no e-CVT to control the RPM. Otherwise I absolutley love the drivetrain, it is genius and I hope a similar layout comes to the Civic, Insight, CRZ hybrids, and Acura ILX

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gearing is quite high so the engine is spinning rather slowly at 70 MPH. This is in the name of efficiency because the engine can always de-couple and operate in series hybrid mode if more torque is needed for hill climbing.

    • @danwat1234
      @danwat1234 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos That's good but how do you know? Did you plug in a reader to the OBD2 port to look at RPMs? It would make sense to design it like this, where parallel mode is very eco and if you need high power (higher than what the electric motor can output with the battery power + engine power at RPM) it'll switch back to series mode so the engine can rev up.

    • @danwat1234
      @danwat1234 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos BTW can you believe it? On Honda's official site, it says the '14 Accord hybrid has an e-CVT transmission! Wow, they got it wrong. I've sent them an email.

    I have run the numbers. Assuming I drive 16k miles per year and gas prices remain at $3.14 (where they are where I live), I would be saving a little over $600/year in money for gas over the 2.5 EX-L. The Accord Hybrid Grand Touring is about $5000 more than the Accord 2.5 EX-L with navigation, but you also get more options including adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, and homelink remote system. I'd say that's worth at least $1500. Previously, I wouldn't think that buying a hybrid is worth it. However, the Accord Hybrid is a lot quieter, more comfortable, better equipped, more efficient, and has a better image than the fully loaded 2.5L model that the $5000 premium and the reduced practicality you pay for the hybrid is worth it.

      Any EV or hybrid vehicle will have lower economy in the cold. Not just because of the reduced battery capacity but also because of the demands on the engine to heat the cabin. I would not be surprised if it was a 15% reduction in economy.

    how would you compare between a 2014 2.5L 5dr mazda3 and this 2014 accord hybrid? the top of line mazda3 with tech package is also around 30k.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a tricky comparison since they are quite different. The Accord is obviously larger and thanks to its hybrid drivetrain it is more efficient as well. The Mazda3 is a fun car to drive but it is smaller and has a different image than a mid-sized sedan.

    Alex, I just love your reviews. You are one of the most reliable, trustworthy reviewers. Every day I travel about 100 miles (to and fro combined to work). What would you buy- a Camry Hybrid or a Accord Hybrid? In my area, we don't have Accord Hybrids available for test drive. It seems they have to be pre-ordered. The thing that I like about the Camry Hybrids is that they are less expensive and they offer a 0% APR which Honda doesn't offer. I would like to know your thoughts.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would buy the Accord. The hybrid system isn't quite as refined but the rest of the car is a step above the Camry and the fuel economy is superior.

      Alex on Autos Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment. I have one more question. I almost purchased the Toyota LE Eco because it was quite affordable and the mileage seemed to be good. When I drove the car though, I didn't find it that comfortable. It wasn't bad, it wasn't good either. It was just ok.
      What are your thoughts on LE Eco? Even though you can't compare a Corolla LE Eco with an Accord Hybrid, I just would like to know your thoughts. Would you recommend someone to purchase a LE Eco and if so, who would that target customer be?
      Once again thanks in advance.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yourreviewer Personally I'd take the Civic over the Corolla. Eco trims in general aren't worth the extra cash in my mind. Your best fuel economy will be realized with behaviour modification rather than paying extra for a trim level.

    • @yourreviewer
      @yourreviewer 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos Thank you very much Alex. I promise not to bug you anymore- one final question (hopefully). I think in your 2014 Corolla video. In that video, you ranked the Kia Forte first, then the Corolla and then the Civic. Any reason why you like the Civic over the Corolla?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yourreviewer
      That video was before the Civic was refreshed. Honda took note of the Forte, Corolla and the Elantra and went back to the drawing board to refresh the Civic in 2013 and 2015. The resulting changes have made the interior more comfortable, improved fuel economy by several MPGs in real world driving and brought a much needed update to the navigation and infotainment system. I have a Civic review on the channel from recently that illustrates the changes.

      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am working on getting one but I don't have an ETA. As fat as TheTruthAboutCars.com goes I am still their reviews editor but this channel had always been independent but semi-affiliated. It was mutually agreed that this was somewhat confusing and everyone decided rebranding this channel was the right thing to do.

    Between a 2014 Camry hybrid and a 2014 Accord hybrid, which one would you person pick and why? Thanks!

      Honda. Because I only look at Toyota's before going to bed.

      The Accord without question. The real world mileage is significantly better, the car is also nicer to drive and the design is more modern. The only thing the Camry has going for it is the small trunk pass-thru.

    would you say the extra money for the hybrid is worth it over the regular?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on how you value the hybrid. Will you ever save money vs the 4-cylinder model with a CVT? Probably not. However it is one of the more efficient mid-size vehicles.

    I tried the Altima V6, its very simple yet elegant, has a very nice layout, but the car revs too much, more than the Accord V6 in my eyes. the Fusion didn't impress me in terms of power and fuel economy. The Ecoboost tech isn't anything special, but the car looks and handles nicely. The Mazda 6 looks and corners nice, it might be a good pick on a 4cyl comparison. and the Camry is a no-no lol
    The Accord 4cyl is very quiet yet punchy, it desnt sound like the Altima 4cyl CVT. i was very impressed

    Alex,
    Please share your thoughts on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The cost is significantly lower than the Honda Accord Hybrid plus the warranty from Hyundai is tremendous.I am torn. I appreciate any guidance you can provide.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Denham The Sonata is less expensive for sure but the car doesn't get the same kind of fuel economy and based on the design I think the Accord is likely to be more reliable in the long run as well. You would have to calculate your own ROI, but I suspect for most folks it would be around 5-6 years.

    • @wjddmlfhdnstkghl
      @wjddmlfhdnstkghl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your concern. Saving initial money for sonata, saving run-time money for accord, I think. 124 kW motor of Accord will save fuel more than 38 kW motor of Sonata, but the cost of motor is not.

    I consistently get better than the EPA hwy estimate of 36 mpg in my 2013 Accord Ex-L 2.4 Earth Dreams CVT. The best I have gotten is 46.5 mpg.

    unfortunately, the battery is only covered by warranty for 2 years, unlike the camry which has 8 years. the cost of accord battery is also 1800 dollars more expensive than than the camry....can Honda explains why the warranty is only a fraction of the the camry's

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hybrid battery pack is covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty just like the others. Warranty information is available on Honda's website. The battery warranty is required by the California Air Resources Board and most companies just apply the same warranty in every state because it is easier.

    • @Glory-to-God.
      @Glory-to-God. 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      on the US website, it says Battery-pack limited warranty may vary. on the Canada's one, it says 2 years 100% coverage, 3 years 50%. check it out. the 8 year/100000 miles is just the integrated motor, not the battery. so I guess the warranty is the same in north America. it does make sense cuz Honda hybrid uses mainly battery power when it is under 60km/hr unlike camry and the battery would die much quicker.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ImperialistsBuster From Honda's website in the USA. (Canadian warranties are different) The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile Limited Vehicle Warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile Corrosion Limited Warranty. The hybrid battery pack is covered by a 8-year/100,000-mile or 10-year/150,000 mile limited warranty, depending on the state of purchase/registration.

    One thing I've noticed about the 2013 and 2014 Accords is that the front passenger leg room is significantly smaller. I'm 6-foot tall and my legs are bent at a 45 degree angle when the passenger seat is all the way back. My 2003 honda accord model has much more leg room. Why????? This is keeping us from buying a new accord.

    the Accord exterior looks better than the Altima but not as good as the Mazda. but I'm 50-50 on the interior..
    If i get to pick a 4cyl engine, i might bo between the Accord or the Mazda 6, because both handle, and ride good and engine noise isn't above the class. but if i pick a V6 then the Accord. Has more power and better fuel than the Fusion.
    Tough market indeed
