    Anyone can do reviews of new cars based on shiny
    It's another level to see a mechanic actually have a dedicated review channel that goes over more than just the shiny bits, but also the mechanical bits that a buyer needs to look out for.

    I'm glad it doesn't have a low speed gear actually. Slow speed driving is what wrecks gas mileage in ICE cars. Because the engine can act as a generator and be in a more fuel efficient capacity at slow speeds, and then actually drive the wheels at high speeds when MPG is better, it ends up being an overall better system. Let the battery do the stop and go stuff, and let the engine take the consistent highway driving. Best of both worlds.

    • @scott8919
      @scott8919 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I drive a CR-V Hybrid with the second, lower gear, and I have watched the power flow meter and the instant MPG gauge over the course of 4k miles. The gear indeed increases fuel economy, specifically at light load between certain speeds. What ends up happening when it is not "locked" is the engine has to rev a little higher to compensate for the efficiency losses inherent to turning a generator to power the battery that drives the car... might as well just go from gas engine directly to the wheels. Honda has it so when lightly accelerating it shifts into that gear at about 25 MPH, and you can hear the engine drop like an actual shift. Then at about 35 it unlocks because at that ratio it's no longer the most efficient way to power the wheels... which drops the engine RPMs, proving my point that at that speed the gear ratio is too low to be efficient... and then at 40 the revs drop again when the higher clutch engages. Only after pushing the pedal down about half throttle or higher does it then say "we need power NOW" and unlock ao the engine is free to scream as much as it needs to
      Having a gear though means, beyond a certain speed, you end up revving the engine too much because you're going too fast to be efficient in that gear, and Honda did an excellent job with figuring out at what thresholds it's better to go one way or the other, at a moment's notice. I rarely ever see it trip up.

    • @jeffjo8732

      @@kevinmcd112 Thinking so usually means you are thinking about it backwards. This isn't a gas car where the motor helps the engine, it is an EV where the electricity comes from a generator and a battery.
      The disadvantage - which is less than most think - is that you have to convert twice between mechanical and electrical power, when you could have just changed the rpm with a transmission.
      The advantage is that you can keep the engine near 2000 rpm and 34 HP, where it is most efficient, almost all of the time it runs. Not even Toyota's PSD can keep it that efficient, although part of that is because they use a smaller motor and a larger ICE. The reason for what you may think is "stupid" is that if you have a narrow range of speeds where you can count on it staying there, you can link the engine directly and get rid of even more loss.

      @@jeffjo8732 so you're saying it's like the guy driving a tesla with the gas generator in the trunk. It doesn't make sense.
      The gas engine is always running and revs as it would if it was driving the car and gets literally the same gas mileage as the 1.5L turbo from the 10th gen Accord sport. This car is Honda's hint at going "full electric" to please the planet and save us all from the sun monster. It's stupid because this would-be "electric car" burns just as much gas as its gas-powered siblings. I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it. Electric vehicles are unsustainable.

    Great review! I learned a lot about the 2024 Honda Accord. I have some additional comments as to how the two top cars differ, the Accord and the Camry. I like the Honda's smaller diameter sized a-pillars. It is easier to see around them and visualize what is outside. The door swing and door handle are much easier to operate, when opening and closing the front doors your not reaching as far. Also you don't have to twist as far to reach the seatbelt. I also enjoy the drivers seat better and how my leg is better positioned in the Accord. That said both cars are really great and I believe you can't go wrong with either one when selecting a sedan.

    I had my 03 Accord EX-L V6 for 15 years, then got a brand new 17 Accord EX-L V6. This was the last model year before Honda went to CVT. I dig the retro look of the new accords, the last gen body didn't do it for me that was why I got the 17 instead of waiting a month for the 18 and also the V6. If you enjoying driving and want the reliability of Toyota, get a Honda. I also save a lot of money working on my car because Honda makes it so easy and simple to do maintenance.

      Your Type R is fun, but the Mazda 6 is fun as it is luxurious :) I want torque, ventilated seats, road feels, and nice handling. The mercury sable is a refrigerator with wheels. A better comparison based on design would be the Maserati Quattroporte, but the Mazda is reliable LOL

    I love the look of this accord, yes the civic is amazing and the accord will face a lot of competition from it, but this accord is the nicest one ever. Im just disappointed they discontinued 2L turbo and 10speed auto (V6 as well while we're at it). The hybrid is very nice though it just sucks you can get a better engine in a civic si than in the accord with the 1.5L turbo

    Have had a 2024 Accord Hybrid Sport for just over a month now, 1500 miles and love it. It’s in solar silver color which I actually love with the sport accents. Features-wise I do wish I went EX-L for heated seats, slightly better mpg, and regular tires instead of low profile that I worry will pop or damage a rim with every bump lol. But I’m fine with it as is with sport too, I’ll just gradually change stuff on it over time myself.
    Averaging 43.4 mpg, some drives I get 36 if it’s highway, into wind, and engine didn’t get to warm up all the way. Others I’ve done 61 mpg for city driving in decently warm weather. On the highway for long drives without heavy wind or cold I get closer to 42-43

    Thanks for a great review! I bought the 2023 EX-L Accord Hybrid six months ago, and I really like it. Things to mention - the EX-L has 17" wheels, for those who don't like the low-profile tires. The traction motor does have high torque when you need it for quick acceleration. I do like the combination of lane following, adaptive cruise control, and traffic jam assist; they make driving in heavy freeway traffic a breeze. I'm an older driver, so I do prefer the less aggressive style - let's call it "understated" rather than "conservative." And thank you for pointing out the battery vent; I'll be sure to keep that clean!
    The 12.3" infotainment screen gets high marks from me. It's mounted high on the dash, so the road is still very much in view when I look at the screen. There's a short ledge in front of the screen, so you can brace your hand while touching the screen - no trying to hit a control with a "floaty finger" while driving. And in general, there's not much reason to touch the screen once you're moving. CarPlay works very well, with the ability to split the screen between maps, music, and the power flow display. iPhone and CarPlay can be a bit glitchy due to BlueTooth, but that is generally resolved by restarting the phone.
    Overall, it's a great car, and I highly recommend it. It's a huge improvement over previous Accords; this is my fourth Accord!

    Cool overview of the 'transmission', so advanced, it's simple!

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, it is simple. The reviewer calls it complicated, but that is because it is _different_ than what he is used to. It is actually much simpler than a Toyota. To see how simple it is, see th-cam.com/video/CHVI8r0nlk4/w-d-xo.html (an earlier model, but everything applies the same way).
      6:32 "This hybrid system the way it works it has multiple modes of operation."
      It actually has fewer modes than in Toyotas. Wikipedia lists nine modes for them. The reason you don't hear them described, is that the main ones are too complicated for most people to understand. They also require different parts of the system to change roles for complicated reasons. Honda's are explained, because they are simpler and fewer. That, and Honda generally is more transparent with technical details.
      The Honda can be better described by emphasizing the processes first, and then the mechanics: It is an EV. Not a _battery_ EV, like a Tesla, but a _battery_ _and_ _generator_ EV. The benefit here is that the engine is most efficient when it generates more power than is needed fro cruising, but less than what is needed for hard acceleration.
      So most of the time, the engine is either off (far more than in a Toyota), or it runs at 2000 rpm and 34 HP. It drives the generator. The Power Control Unit (PCU) splits the engine's power, either up or down, to send the right amount to the wheels. The battery is either charged with the excess, or covers the shortfall. This description applies to everything except highway cruising.
      The only time this process can be improved on, is while cruising on the highway. By choosing a gear ratio that makes ~2000 rpm correspond to highway speed (and 2000 rpm is 54 mph), you can cut out the middle part and have the engine drive the wheels directly. Contrary to what the reviewer says, it happens as low as 40 mph (1500 rpm). It is documented, and the car even shows when it happens, which is how I know it happens at 40 mph. The traction motor then does the power splitting, either acting as a generator (most often) to charge the battery, or adding some power. Bit never adding too much - it will drop back into B&G EV mode for that.
      The operational philosophy of the Toyota system does the exact same things, in a more complicated manner. In the Honda, only one motor-generator is involved in power splitting anytime it happens, and it doesn't happen all of the time. In the Toyota, both are involved anytime the engine is on. The power is split three ways, not two, which is why there are more modes. One MG is a generator, one is a motor, and the balance between them is what controls the engine's rpm. The PCU splits the electrical power the same way the Honda did, in between the two MGs.
