    Sabine Schmitz ain’t got... 😂 First time driving on the Nurburgring and as you can tell I’m visibly terrified and laser focused haha. We had two laps in the brand new 2019 Hyundai Veloster N - 275 HP hatch weighing around 3100 lbs. Our second lap was 10:01, which I know to many sounds like an eternity, but for my first time out there it was a stressful pace haha (we’re running lead follow). For reference, Jeremy Clarkson did it in 10 minutes with the diesel Jag, and the queen of the ‘ring Sabine did it in 10:08 in a transit van. I did two laps in Forza 4 before coming out here (two laps is plenty to learn a 13 mile track, right?) in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L and my second lap was just under 10 minutes. So to get anywhere near that in this car in real life, I was shocked haha. As far as the Veloster N, it’s hard to give impressions based on a track drive because I’m focused mainly on not crashing, but I will say I was surprised by the relatively low amount of understeer, and also how well the lsd put power down to the front tires without much fuss coming out of corners. This thing is fun and capable, but I’ll have a better impression tomorrow after the road drive. Can’t believe I was on THE ring!!!

    Jason M.F. Fenske, congratulations on the achievement of having a job where car companies lend you cars and send you out around "The Ring" just so you can tell people how it was. You've come a long way from dress shirts and white boards!

    Nice smooth lap! Just crazy to think that Timo Bernhard did it in like half the time. This seems like a good pace for a road car but that Porsche was just out of this world!

      Yes, I've watched that 919 lap several times and Timo was driving so quickly it seems as if the video is actually sped up. Amazing reaction times to accomplish that 5.19.54 lap time.

    According to the map in the bottom left, the 'ring is experiencing some interesting G forces! Someone should send a geologist and physicist there to investigate!
    Serious part of the comment: that looks so fun!

    • @EngineeringExplainedExtra
      @EngineeringExplainedExtra  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the metrics went a little wild because they're mostly GPS based, and the G forces are based on the camera's orientation, so on large banks it's going to be thrown off.

    You can tell from time to time the frustration when you wish you could push the car harder like in Flugplatz and right after in Schwedenkreuz, but hey, you can't be picky.

    That looked like a blast, Jason.😄 Thanks for the ride-along. First off, much respect to you for putting this video out there for all the pros to analyze and critique. I wouldn't have the courage. As I am not a professional race driver and have never been to the Nürburgring, I don't have any words of wisdom to offer. I did notice that move just after 9:35 ... gotta look good as you lap the ring.😁 j/k Without knowing the car very well and without knowing the track much at all, I'd say you did very well. I enjoyed the video. Congratulations buddy!🙌

    I got myself an ultimate V 2019. I went to my dealer to ask when they will be getting the N, well you will be lucky if you even get your hands on one of these. The dealer told me each dealer will only get 1 of them. They have an order in for the signature blue color. I have been buying Hyundai’s for year with this dealer, he told me I would be the first one he calls, well I won’t hold my breath on that. I wonder if they would hike the price as they do on the Honda Type R.

    Clarkson did 10 minutes for a btg lap (bridge to gantry). Your btg lap was actually 9m31s. Pretty decent for a first day ever. Getting it under 8 minutes btg will take a bit longer :-)

    I would just say that the interior needs a little more color separation, it looks a bit stark. More light blue accents in the interior would really elevate it.

    i amd veloster n owner
    There are some problems
    1. The esg sound is mounted on the windshield of the engine room, so if you change the exhaust sound, the windshield will vibrate noise come
    2. Seat position is too high
    3. The height of the center console is high, so the elbow touches the when you change gear
    4. Connection of water-cooled oil cooler Many hoses are not properly tightened.
    5. Sealing is not fully applied to the trailer ring side chassis at the rear of the vehicle.
    6. The turbo position in the engine room is too close to the abs module.7.the air duct on the brake side is installed on the front control arm, but the brake heatsink is very poorly ventilated

    1g plus cornering and 140mph on the straight in a stock Hyundai just feels crazy. I mean Hyundai did build the car I rented once and with 250 miles on it left me stranded when the key snapped of in the door lock. My how things have changed.

    I don't think you should be in 2nd gear anywhere on the Ring in a Hothatch. But since this is not about lap times, only about the fun and the actual experience I think this is excusable :)

Isnt that bad for your 2nd lap ever without any Video Game track memory. I have gone under 10 after about 5-10 laps (but with years of Gran Turismo experiance lol) in my stockish mx5 n/a tho. Cant get under 9 tho....im too slow for that atm. 😆

    ... Shame it's hideous

    • @victorwong3311
      @victorwong3311 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same opinion here. Seriously, why not an Elantra N?
      I'd love to save money off a German car, but the Civic-R and Veloster-N are just to weird for someone older, i.e. 45+.
      But, saying that, I have a lot of trust in Biermann going to Hyundai from BMW, and if you squint just right, the Veloster is presentable, and if I'm drinking while watching TH-cam, that blue color starts looking nice.

    • @techpappee
      @techpappee 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Victor Wong, performance blue isn't the only color available just the one used for press. It will be offered in more standard colors as well. Black, grey, red etc.
      I'm 45+ myself. Why I agree I wouldn't purchase a TypeR because of its over the top boy racer styling, I would the Veloster N.
      I think Hyundai did a good job redesigning it. It's an evolution of the original design IMO.

    • @suprenormal

      Mai Samidare Hyundai has a R&D centre at the ring. The veloster n was extensively tested on the ring, so I suppose they have a few laying around there.

    • @techpappee
      @techpappee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what the N stands for, not only the r&d center in Korea but also the ring where both cars are tested and tweaked. Hyundai has a center there as well.

    Try not to stay so far away from the instructor. So far away from him it is a lot more difficult to get the right line and it is more difficult for the instructor to see what you are doing. Getting a bit nearer like the car in front of you or even a bit more would make things a lot safer and less frightening.

    • @gato311
      @gato311 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2nd lap? I know that due to the imperfect line in some situations you would better not go faster. However it appeared to me that you just never tried to catch up in the straight sections (as straight as it gets outside Döttinger Höhe). I know, it's really different from normal race tracks.
