- We're at the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (CWRS) with a rare behind-the-scenes visit with Quilliam the porcupine. He came to the CWRS after being raised by a member of the public. Unfortunately he had an unseen injury that wasn't addressed until he came to the clinic which has caused him to permanently be unable to climb, a necessary skill for wild survival and unable to return to the wild.
Quiliam is a great reminder that orphaned wildlife should not be raised in people's homes, not only is it illegal, it is also unfair to that animal. Wildlife that are raised in homes often come to the CWRS starving, habituated, and with unaddressed injuries.

One time about 8 yrs ago, i had to do community service as part of my bid. One of them days, i was allowed to volunteer at the local animal shelter. They specifically told us NOT to enter the kennels and physically interact with ANY of the animals. Pffft....i said fuck that. Waited for when no one was around and my ass went into all 30 kennels and played with every single stray or lost dog. Visited every single cat, hamster, bird, and guinea pig. The very least i could do for all those poor lil pups and animals....I left that day so fuckin sad....
Ive lost both my mom, and my dad, and till this day, that day at the animal shelter was one of the most memorable and saddest, bittersweet days of my life bc i knew they were all destined to be put down if not adopted....rip to all those animals that never made it....*pouring liquor out for all the dead homies*

He can't be released into the wild as I understand the video. So if he wants to be cuddled, I consider it really cruel not to touch him.
Most people say you can pet them provided you do it properly. Everyday I am full of regret that I didn't.
His keepers touch and cuddle him because they know how to safely do it. Tourists (as in this video) should not try to pet him.
I honestly don't really understand the whole petting thing, i have always prefeered to give animals a scratch instead.
Also you shouln't hover ur hand above an animals head, or be unsure. If ur going to touch an animal, do it or don't, there is no inbetween.

I've seen videos of people petting porcupines. I think its fine to do so as long as you pet with the grain and don't pet their back if their quills are up.

You're right. You can also pet areas without quills like the face.
They could have pet him in the direction his quills flow...he just wanted a little love. But otherwise, Cool!

I love videos like this. I grew up thinking porcupines were just little pests to keep your dog away from. They actually seem quite cute and affectionate though. Not saying I would run up and play with a wild one of course lol, but I feel bad for little Quilliam not being able to get any cuddles. Will their quills puncture you simply be touching the wrong end, or do they require a bit of force from the porcupine? Could you touch them like a hedgehog, or would that leave you with a handful of problems lol?
I think you might be able to pet them if done properly. I didn't know that at the time however, so now I'm full of regret. A wildlife tech was not present at the time though and they're not a petting zoo so I kept my hands to myself. Maybe next time!

This is the saddest video on youtube. I was going to report it, but found out extreme sadness isn't against the community rules.
He is unable to be released back into to the wild, but he's being cared for by expert wildlife rehabilitators. It seems like a happy story to me, but thanks for your comment. Sorry it didn't meet your cheery and upbeat expectations.

A little scratch on the nose & chin, if unsure. Quills were down. A stroke downwards along the top of the head would do. Picking him up,like he wanted; well that is an issue.

Well, I am lonely too but, whining about my situation has NEVER EVER been a solution to that problem. You've got to stop thinking that things are going to come up to you, without making genuine efforts to that effect. Being imbued of yourself is one of the worst thing you could do. So refocused and think about what you really want and go on and go get it, and stop complaining that the water is wet!

The people are way to scared of these animals, they probably watch videos where leopoards die of them but this is not same. Just pet him the head, this is no problem.
What's unfair is that it's used to human interaction and you are denying it. I get it, don't do it from the start, but it's to late, now your just being cruel. ( devils advocate from video info above ) There are different types of cruelty.
We were guests that day at the CWRS, rest assured he gets lots of love, affection, and attention from the trained staff at the rehab center. Thanks for your concern.
