PART TWO of my discussions about drama & commentary channels. Share your thoughts!!
    TIME STAMPS BELOW:
    0:00 - intro
1:23 - the pattern of drama coverage on youtube, using the Nikocado Avocado & Stephanie Soo situation as an example
    1:42 - step 1) tea is spilled
    2:20 - step 2) audience reactions & response videos
4:22 - step 3) tea channels reupload clips and receipts
    4:54 - step 4) Person #2 responds
5:52 - step 5) more reactions, response videos, and drama recaps
8:22 - step 6) involved people continue to make response videos
8:38 - step 7) most viewers lose interest, but videos will still be made as long as some people will still watch
9:12 - we must re-examine if & how we interact with youtube drama
9:46 - sometimes dramatic situations contain important takeaways
10:49 - we can make larger points about the drama that happens online, rather than focusing on trivial details
12:18 - tbt to when I made the mistake of jumping on the bandwagon of "covering" the James Charles & Tati situation
13:13 - drama & commentary channels have a responsibility to admit when we are wrong
13:31 - are drama and commentary channels "journalists" ?
14:32 - the five core principles of journalism, and how they relate to youtubers
17:29 - are drama and commentary channels "bullying" ?
18:11 - remember when Jake Paul called Cody Ko a bully?
19:58 - my personal conflict in making videos about other youtubers
20:58 - just watch ContraPoints' video on Canceling, ok ??

Criminology & psychology major here! There's a bias called "anchoring" where we rely on information we see/hear first to inform how we interpret other information or make decisions. There's a bunch of research about how this bias impacts us, but when it comes to these drama videos or channels I think that the emotion behind them and the details and "receipts" construct (or seem to construct) such a compelling narrative that the one we see first is (1) very convincing, and (2) what we will use to interpret related information and developments.

Psych PhD here, and yes to all of this! Just to expand on this slightly, there’s a boatload of studies showing that’s it’s very hard to change people’s opinions once they’re convinced something is true.
If someone already believes story A, if they hear evidence to support story B, this creates dissonance-and to resolve this, they will likely (a) discount that evidence as untrue, (b) spin the evidence so that it somehow supports story A, or (c) accept it’s true but determine that it doesn’t matter. People are more likely to do (d) change their mind and believe story B (or some mix of both stories) if they aren’t strongly anchored to the first story-but even if they do change their mind, effects of story A continue to linger (even if story A was never true!).
Worst of all, (and this pertains perhaps more to fake news but still seems relevant here), even if people think something’s not true, if they repeatedly see headlines about it over and over again, they’ll start to think it must be true.

I’m a former journalist. As a first year reporter I broke a story about the chief of police and why he was fired. It was a big deal for me to make sure all my facts were correct. I don’t consider tea/drama/commentary videos as journalism. Keem Star is NOT a journalist, no matter what he says.

Re: the question of likable bullies, I think of The Office (US version). In the episode Classy Christmas (season 7, ep. 11/12), Dwight, a pretty unstable and socially clueless character, takes epic revenge on Jim, the likeable audience-insert character, for all of Jim's previous pranking. Now, Jim's pranks are hilarious (for the audience), but they always truly upset Dwight. When we laugh at Jim's pranks, we laugh at Dwight's discomfort. So Jim's pranking is bullying, especially because Jim is popular and Dwight is not. Isn't that the classic set-up? Popular kid makes fun of loser? In Episode 1 of the series, when Dwight complains that Jim has put his stapler in jello "again", why do we not see right away that Jim is being a bully? Because Jim is charming. But if Jim were also kind, he'd see that Dwight wasn't having fun with the pranks, and he would stop.
Yet, when I talk to people about their reactions to the Classy Christmas episode, they don't see Dwight's behavior as justified, or even as the inevitable snap of an unbalanced person after years of persecution. They see Jim as a victim of Dwight's terrible social skills: Dwight is at fault both for not knowing "how to take a joke" when he's the victim and for "taking a prank too far" when he's the perpetrator.
What's especially interesting about this dynamic is the possibility that many bullies may not know that they're bullies, because they don't mean harm, or don't get negative feedback from anyone except the "loser" who "just can't take a joke". Popular TH-camrs chasing views and ad revenue might not feel very powerful, but their videos making fun of others still get millions of views, and that is power. Bullying when you don't mean to bully could happen.

    • @nomusicnecessary
      @nomusicnecessary 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

This is such an insightful comment, and something I think should get more responses here! This dynamic makes it more clear to me why I don't really enjoy or understand the humor of The Office

Fr I found myself disliking Jim in the earlier seasons when I rewatched them bc he just came off mean. And in that Christmas episode I’m pretty sure Jim just got a snowball and threw it at Dwight instead of doing an elaborate prank making him more of a bully

    • @wendywinger7169
      @wendywinger7169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Thank you for this comment. Yes, Jim is such a bully, yet people often deny it because when he is compared to other people, he looks normal along with Pam. For example, Dwight might be a weirdo but he doesn't try to harm anyone, he even tries to protect people even though the way he chooses might be wrong. On the other hand if you compare Jim and Michael, they are technically both the same. Their jokes make someone uncomfortable but Michael doesn't aware how he makes people uncomfortable or doesn't get the social clues. Yet, Jim is aware these social clues and he still "pranks" Dwight because he doesn't respect him, or simply being different from others and tbh Dwight is easy to pick on. And Jim likes that attention if you think that's essentially builded a relationship with Pam too.

I feel like this “drama” issue is not only prevalent on TH-cam but also in our political system. Large new organizations like CNN, Fox, etc. follow similar patterns to those discussed in this video. In addition, they have 24 hours to cover it! Imagine how much money all of these organizations have made in the past 5 years covering somewhat trivial issues and picking them apart without any hint of journalism (from both the left and the right!) Interesting to consider the human nature that makes drama so profitable.

Just speaking to the bullying vs critiquing piece - I do think its important to consider the power imbalance between a huge youtuber with millions of subscribers and the potentially smaller creator they are making fun of. It's not the act of laughing about the content itself - to me its about the fallout that can happen when a huge creator sends their hoards of fans to go and attack whoever they were making fun of. Like, this happens anytime a Kardashian responds to a tweet they don't like - you might as well delete your account if this happens to you

the bias thing is very true, we've always been told we're going into this objectively and just reporting the news, not trying to put our own opinion into the work. we may chose sources based on our opinions, but a good journalist (as far as i have learned, of course) retell the story with no or as little bias as possible.

All of the “tea”/drama channels make me uncomfortable. I understand their place on the platform, but I don’t like them.
I don’t like the idea of discussing someone, talking about things that perhaps are real and VERY serious for them, all the while referring to those serious topics as “tea”. Like what’s going on with Onision right now? I hope that isn’t being called “tea”. It minimizes what is, in that case, allegations of very serious crimes.
Maybe I’m being too sensitive about this. I’ll admit I’ve never watched a video by one of these tea channels, so I’m happy to be corrected and educated by someone who has. I just find the whole idea pretty toxic.

    • @beetlebum262
      @beetlebum262 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

noel090909 I agree wholeheartedly. We need to specify what’s ‘tea’ and what’s something genuinely serious. Both can and should be discussed in my opinion, but referring to every piece of drama as tea is extremely toxic. Putting things as serious as the Onision situation and things a minuscule Trisha Paytas not liking Gabbie Hanna under the same umbrella makes the serious things more petty. People usually won’t listen to serious things on TH-cam because of the platforms reputation. Labeling it as tea is only going to worsen things. If people actually wanted to bring situations in to the light and give justice to those who were wronged, they wouldn’t jump on the gun to make a video about the first piece of information that came out.

Tea originally meant personal stuff going on in someone's life and circles, but idk if it meant only casual gossip or if it also included serious issues/traumas /etc. I think it meant both, but hearing "tea" used for casual gossip a lot does probably mean that the connotation has shifted to casual rather than serious.

Thank you for providing that context. I obviously have my own biases, but it’s clear to me that gossip about an individual can be about anything, serious or silly.
I still think I basically agree with the above comment from Jon that perhaps a different word should be used in more serious circumstances, but maybe I’ll be able to see “tea” with some more nuance now.
      So thanks! :)

as a journalism major I can wholeheartedly agree with the core principles, it is necessary to keep them all in mind when being tasked to tell the news in a fair and honest fashion, especially considering the climate of news we all live in currently where the truth is a little hard to get to through all of the lies and misinformation being spread around quicker than the common cold in a packed room. so, yeah! thank you for talking about that and how misleading some drama/"tea" channels are being when saying that (not even Internet Today* does that, they specifically say they aren't the news and that just listening to them is Not A Good Thing)

Thanks so much for touching on the concept of professional journalism. In this day and age, I'm not sure most people realize that real journalists have ethics and guidelines they are to follow when reporting. There is so much distrust and crazy accusations aimed toward the press, the fact that these professionals are charges with reporting the facts and both sides of the story is obscured.

As someone who consistently watches Philip DeFranco, he makes it a point to only cover "drama" when there is a bigger legal battle at hand or something that affects the internet culture as it stands. That being said, I think he's a good medium of traditional news/journalism and new age internet media. He reports the facts while also expressing his opinions and he plays the internet game of clickbait and covering stories he knows people want him to cover. He holds himself to the same standards that licensed journalists do even though he does not comes from a traditional journalist background. I think a lot of drama/commentary channels like to say he's a drama channel because he tries very hard to distance himself from them and tries to pay them as little mind as possible. He's also shit on them and I think he thinks he's better than them. I'm glad that there are people like you who are changing the game for commentary channels and are trying to be more responsible in the way you do your research, spread information and hold yourself accountable.

As someone who's been bullied for many many years at school, on the internet and basically everywhere you can face bullying, I'd like say a few words about what is classified as bullying. It's the deliberate action of doing harm to other people just to make them hurt, nothing more. People tend to throw the word around too much and in situations when there's literally no bullying present. That in itself is very harmful to the people who are actually being bullied. When we're classifying things like "That's Cringe" as bullying, literal vicmins of the hateful act get laughed at and their experiences as being bullied are disregarded and not taken seriously. Bullying is a serious problem, I've struggled my whole life with it and it has caused me mental health problems to say the least. This is why we really need to pay attention what we call bullying. The main point is that laughing at someone's ACTIONS isn't bullying, but belitteling someone AS A PERSON and laughing at THEM is what we can call bullying.

If you're the first person to call someone a manipulative liar, the other person is already at a severe disadvantage to be believed, whether what they say is true or not. Not every one tunes in to response videos either, worse of all they might get condensed biased information from tea channels who are not just biased but can also omit details crucial to the story.

Coming from the perspective of someone with PTSD and who's been kinda-sorta following the situation, I think another thing that the Soo and Nick drama addresses is the way that we as traumatized people respond to triggers. Both Soo and Nick have mentioned their personal histories with trauma (Soo's triggers as she's described them are are based around feeling trapped and incapable of agency, while Nick's are feelings of abandonment or withholding) as they've impacted their roles in the current situation, and I think there should be a little more discussion on the ways in which the two of them have responded to their own triggers - Soo, by internalizing the pain and holding it to herself for a long time, and Nick, by overreaching and reacting very strongly against not just the triggering event but also the person acting out the given trigger.

As someone with a Journalism degree, the idea that “tea” channels are journalists is laughable. It’s honestly hilarious that some of these people actually take what they do THAT seriously.
And one of the most important tenants of journalism is being completely neutral no matter the subject matter (unless you’re creating op-Ed type of content). But even with op-Ed’s, you typically need to do way more research than drama channels do.
Interviewing is also a tenant in journalism. You’re supposed to at least try to get direct responses from both sides of the argument.

As a loyal fan of Philip Defranco since 2015, the evolution of his channel is astounding....he has had a research team since 2016, yes up top he'll cover "community" news (TH-cam stuff/social media stuff), but he usually saves the back half of the videos for political news & and international news...for example, the last video he did before his month long break on 12/19/19, he covered the Camila Cabello controversy, Forbes' Top Ten Richest TH-camrs, he shouted out other TH-cam vids, he then covered Congress voting to impeach Trump, and finally Trump Rally in Michigan following the impeachment...he so good at showing all the facts, and then clearly stating what is actually his opinion, and as a registered Democrat, I appreciate how fair Phil is at covering all politics on both sides...he's the closest thing the internet will ever see to actual "Fair & Balanced"...and one last thing that I really appreciate bout Phil, TH-cam's stupid policy that lead to the 1st "Ad-Pocalypse" bout themes that are deemed so controversial that lead to demonitization (Terrorism, Killings, Rapes, Child Abuse etc.), has lead to many of his videos getting demonetized, but hasn't stopped him from pushing through that hurdle, he'll continue to cover these topics knowing how important it is to inform the public

Hi, I'm a Masters of Journalism student and those core principles are 100% CORRECT. These drama and commentary channels aren't journalists / news media nor do they want to be lol. If they abide by the same unspoken "laws" as journalists, these channels would be sued for libel left and right by the people they report drama on. Journalists are public servants and we're committed to reporting the truth/exposing the truth. It may hurt a few people, but it does more good than hurt. They could hurt a few people, but help many more. Drama and commentary channels aren't here to tell the truth, they tell drama no matter how many more people they hurt than do good for. Also, the sources of these channels are "questionable" at times, and if you wanna be a journalist, your sources can't be "questionable"

This is a really interesting subject, and you presented the topic well! As someone who knows a fair bit about journalism (mostly from the side of a writer, but the overall rules of journalism still apply no matter how the content is presented), I don’t think reaction/drama channels are necessarily too similar to journalists, and that’s okay. Journalism relies heavily on research and accuracy, not speculation. While drama channels and commentary channels do report on situations, drama channels react quickly without always knowing the context, and opinions are central in videos. Commentary channels tend to give an overview rather than a play-by-play and send a central message to viewers, which involves the commentator’s opinion. I think there’s a place for both drama channels and commentary channels, but it’s important for creators to explain what is opinion vs fact. Viewers need to be aware of this, too, and be critical when consuming media.
My bad about the essay, I just find this whole topic interesting. :) Great video as always!

    RANT ABOUT CANCEL CULTURE
Honestly, we as an online audience, as the 'viewers' or 'fans' have become so obsessed with cancelling. Cancel culture started off as calling out people for serious issues, for example Harvey Weinstein and the #metoo movement. (This is quite a recent example i'm sure there are older ones). This 'calling out' as such initially seemed to bring people like Weinstein to justice, which seems like a good thing, right? But this has evolved so much that we have started to call people out for minuscule things, like grammar mistakes, or even deviating from what people have said and trying to cancel them based on our own assumptions, which are often wrong. It seems that our society almost finds joy in picking at others mistakes, and that we gain a hero complex when we call someone out. When we do it, we are basically saying "ha! You made this mistake and you are wrong and I am right" , we take small mistakes and over exaggerate them until our accusations are so loosely based on the cancel 'victims' actions it's almost stupid to try and call them out. We've forgotten why cancel culture started, and are rather using it to fuel our own egos as we continually seek to drag people through the dirt for the smallest of mistakes.
Sorry for this messy rant lol x

Was the first time people realized that it was funny and entertaining to watch huge creators fall from grace, be humiliated, and make fools of themselves. The youtube crowds morbidly enjoyed these people's suffering and humiliation, much like bullies.
EXCEPT, they weren't picking on tiny helpless nerds, they were picking on the popular people. Except it wasn't 'bullying' it was retribution for their mistakes.
I think this is a major reason that TH-cam crowds won't except any apology they will always claim its insincere because it is more fun to shit ok someone and laugh at them, then fix the problems and move on.
I do think these aggressive gossipers are jealous. They want to be the queen bee so bad they are just waiting for the currently popular youtubers to make mistakes so that they can rally everyone onto their side and profit off of this person misstep. While continuing to kick then down.
It so cowardly, they don't show their face, they hid behind the crowd that they influence, and an alias. And then isolate and group torment a single person, sometimes to the tune of millions of people.
And the crowd that is clearly bullying in groups (bullies mostly move in crowds because they are actually cowards that only care about preserving themselves) feels like they are 'holding them accountable' or in other it fair or its retribution they deserve it, "it's totally fine that I totally lack integrity in my actions and am overtly cruel" the cancel people say to themselves.
The weirdest part to me, that is seems like everyone in the cancel culture/tea/gossip/mob/which hunt/punisher camp is whatever they accuse the person they are "holding accountable" they do they same thing or worse, or the very worst is they are seriously projecting.
It puts people in a pressure cooker, their every action interpreted as inherently evil and blown up to colossal propostion and yet another reason to send endless hate to them. It is just people watching their every move waiting for a mistake to milk. And then the tea channels play the victim, then the person reacts. Why is she angry? Cause you are mentally abusing her!!!
Man this whole thing is sick. The tea, gossip, tabloid, cowards are disgusting bullies, manipulative humans, with a victim and self righteous holier than thou complex.
The people getting attacked rarely do anything so wrong that they deserve the mental abuse that they receive.

shoutout to all my media studies majors! i'm a digital communication major and we cover media literacy and analyze audiences too! i switched from journalism to digital communications. i can confirm that those journalism principles more or less are the same across the board. it depends on the organization. journalistic companies (newspapers, tv stations, journalism associations and even from other countries) have different standards for their group. they word it differently. it is the same thing. 1. honesty, 2. transparency, 3. accuracy, 4. neutral PoV 5. clarity are the most prevalent in the world of journalism. drama channels that claim they're journalists and are familiar with the practice will not survive.

One of the things that an activist friend said about cancelling that really stuck with me is that cancelling is a culturally capitalistic thing to do. And sometimes that's necessary, sometimes you need to cut off the people in your life for your own health and safety. But when you cancel someone, you're throwing them away. You're putting them out of sight, out of mind, and there's no room for community accountability or growth there. On one hand, you need to provide people the space for growth. On the other hand, you need to consider the impact it has on the victim as well as the potential risks to other vulnerable members of the group.
Anyways, I think what I really like about your commentary videos is that they tend to involve largely meta commentary on phenomena (on political, philosophical, and sociological levels) rather than the direct issue e.g. like this video, looking at "spilling tea" as opposed to a specific incident, or your video on sustainability as a broad movement and it's issues.

I’m in my senior year of my journalism degree, I’m the editor in chief of my uni’s paper and am currently working for a local paper (I know I’m a month late, sorry). It drives me crazy when drama channels try to sell themselves as journalists (looking at you keemstar). Those principles that you described are essential to the basis of journalism. Also, with journalism, there’s an intense editing process. Multiple people read your story, give you feed back, ask the essential question of “is this a provable fact or is this speculation”. Journalists also have an obligation to reach out to the accused and if you don’t you could get sued for libel! Throwing an “allegedly” onto the end of a controversial sentence just isn’t up to snuff. Drama channels need to be more comfortable in what they are and stop trying to use to connotations that go with journalism to try to make themselves seem more than what they are. It’s entertainment, not journalism, and that’s okay (for the most part)! Anyway, Tiffany I love your internet analysis series. Keep up the good work.

Hi tiffany! Please do an internet analysis on mukbang culture and how it somehow encourages binge eating and eating disorder. I find it really extreme and disturbing sometimes.

Thanks so much for dropping the glam and just being natural and not doing performative beauty. Love your channel and the topics you cover! I so wish everyone would pull back from all the drama and spectacle performance that preys on people's emotions for profit.
