    Unpaid internships should be ILLEGAL. If you are working you should be paid for it. End. Of. Story.

      @marschruschrybul6247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +279

      “fun“ fact from Germany: unpaid internships are illegal here. Unfortunately that means that companies will not hire interns anymore unless those internships are absolutely mandatory for something like university degrees (with very very few exceptions). And most degrees don't require more than one three week internship, so you can imagine the kind of real life experience that uni graduates here have. However companies still require a certain amount of work experience for you to even be invited to a job interview. (Exceptions to this conundrum are jobs that require two university degrees and an additional practical education in fields like law, teaching, psychology, pharmacy and medicine- in those cases the government will pay for the practical degree)

      My therapist had to DRILL this out of my head. I was addicted to studying until 1-2am and was exhausted from not sleeping. Along with insomnia from anxiety, I couldn’t sleep because I was always thinking of assignments due, test dates, deadlines, etc. I drove myself crazy. I told her that I always fear that I could be using my sleep time to do “productive” things. Finally, my therapist told me that sleep isn’t optional, and most of all: sleep is the most productive thing to do for your brain. I now HAVE to get at least 8 hours of sleep to function. I’ve actually been doing a lot better grade-wise because I don’t feel like I’m going to have a mental breakdown any moment.

I dropped out 4 years ago, and see my best friends (pretty much my only friends lol) maybe once a month if I’m lucky, usually once every couple months. Your true friends will be the ones you can go months or even years without seeing and pick up right where you left off. It’s nice to see your friends all the time, but with true friends you don’t need to see them everyday to stay friends.

    I think I've misunderstood the meaning of “C's get degrees“ until now. To me, it never meant an excuse to not put in effort so much as a reminder to not overexert yourself if all you need to do is pass the class.
    I have been _forced_ to adopt this mindset because giving my all in uni is not sustainable for me. I burn out. Again and again. A lot of the time I have to settle for just passing a class when I know I am capable of reaching a much higher grade if only I had more time and energy.
    As much as I hate it, a lot of my self-worth is derived from my academic performance, which is why I work so very hard. Sprinkle heavily with ADHD to complicate things further. Getting over that and into the mindset of “C's get degrees“ is literally _LIFE SAVING_ for me.

      The C's get degrees mindset is the standard in high schools and universities in the Netherlands, the very high scoring students get extra's such as research internships because they can handle the extra workload, but these high scores are no requirement for getting in to regular masters or finding an job after you finish your degree.
      So just as a reminder for you, there are rich first world countries where taking care of yourself first is normal. Most of Europe functions like this as far as I know.

Then she called me out in front of my whole class and i started bawlling my eyes out. Like crying so hard while my clasmates were trying to talk about their presentation. And the teacher then told me to hold my tears and to stop making so much noice and i really tried. I was embarrasing myself in front of everyone, it wasn't on purpose. Americans despise laziness and anything associated with it, and honestly that’s why I think we have such a weird, bad attitude towards obesity, because we see obesity and think “laziness” and we can’t stand laziness. For us, being stressed=success. Stress free life? You must be a lazy free loader and you’re probably taking advantage of MY hard work somehow. At least that’s a mindset I kinda see.
    I mean think of all those self help books about how to get more done, how to make more money, how to be more efficient, etc. etc.

    You know what I notice about this type of discussion? No one ever talks about how colleges need to ease the fuck up on the workload that they give students. Colleges will try to give tips and ideas on how to keep up with everything and highlight the importance of self-care when there's literally no fucking time for it. It's my understanding that the workload has increased, while outside responsibilities or obligations of students have also increased which leads to burnout. This is even spreading to elementary schools, where young kids have anxiety because they feel like they need to live up to this high level of academic standard put upon them. I understand that the job market is more competitive than how it was years ago, but people's mental and physical health are being compromised to a larger degree, and that's an issue. People are just like " oh, well it's expected of us that we are to be burned out, so be it" without maybe being like " hey colleges, CALM DOWN, WE CAN'T BREATHE". idk. Also, in regard to unpaid internships, in Canada, from my experience at my college anyways ( and what I've noticed in other colleges and uni's), our practicums are not paid for, and we are not ALLOWED to make money from these practicums. It's part of the contract. It's ridiculous.

If it's a more challenging course in my major, I just strive for getting at least a C (the lowest grade needed to pass and not have to retake the course). If it's a course that's not in my major, I just do what I reasonably can but I don't worry about getting a specific grade. I usually end up getting higher grades in those classes than I expect anyway so I'd say my strategy is working well so far. Just take your time and do your research about your school and don’t be afraid to talk to teachers about what you’re dealing with when it comes to mental health. If it’s something you want to do I say go for it. I didn’t have a plan and that’s where I messed up.

    On the topic of certain majors having a bigger workload than others, I HAVE to mention that music majors often get the short end of the stick because people are like "oh it's not that hard, I'm PREMED" but music majors often have HUGE workloads (daily music theory amirite) on top of ensembles, 0 credit classes (like performance attendance), and lowkey taking more classes/ensembles than technically allowed (or at least that's how it was at my school). And all of that is apart from independent practice time, which is probably multiple hours a day if you actually listen to lesson teachers. So shoutout to the overworked music majors stuck doing the MOST & getting eyerolled by the premed students, y'all deserve more respect and way fewer extra requirements.

    • @tf7602
      @tf7602 4 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      I think creative majors are kind of expected to love/live/breathe their chosen course. Doing ensembles and practicing outside of uni is just normal, because that's your passion, isn't it? So the time and effort spent on learning a part for orchestra or a play or creating art pieces can be devalued by thinking: well, that's your hobby, isn't it?
      It's the same reason, that people always try to get free art from artists. "Because they love art"
      I mean, even work that you love is still work.
      Anyways, that's my perspective from the outside. Would be interested if you have seen that kind of reaction from people/profs/fellow students.

    • @kristenbooks
      @kristenbooks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @T F-- Yeah that's another way people don't really respect it because yes, it's an art form, and yes, musicians wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it, but at the end of the day, it's still work just like everyone else's job. People try to get musicians to play for free for "experience" just like with visual artists. But people on the outside are often the only people who see it that way as "doing it because you love your art". Like sure, a musician sees that they're creating art and loves it, but when they're in a practice room for 5 hours a day, running the same thing over and over again to get it perfect, are they doing it because "wow I love my art"? nah. It's work and they're trying to be the best at their job as possible.
      And tbh the musicians who are the ones creating & running the classes should know better than to give their students huge workloads when they also know the ensemble & performance requirements the students have. The real tea is that music departments need to find a better way to balance the requirements for "academic" music majors (music history, theory, etc) and performance majors because often they're both required to do both equally which isn't good for either.

      this!!! the education system is all different in sweden so we have majors in high school in a similar way to college, and the art program is looked down on by everyone in high school all over sweden as being "the lazy program" because we get to have "fun" courses. and yeah, i breathe art, and wouldn't be able to stand high school without it - doesn't mean i don't work my ass off and rubbing my fingers raw by completing paintings by the deadlines and writing art analyses far into the night when i would rather do anything else. and the music/theater ones (we're all in the same class) have it way harder than us arters. they have to spend so much of their free time putting up shows, practicing, making up for classes they had to skip because of recitals, etc. they have extra private lessons in places that don't even match up with the rest of their schedule, even more class they have to catch up to!
      this is my third and last year of high school, a notoriously tough year for art programmers because of the huge musical my school puts up every year that the arters need to make all the scenography for - and that's on top of other huge projects related to our major. the last couple of months third years are expected to pour all their free time and energy into this production and it's just so weird to me how we get so much slack for it. like i said, i can't imagine working without art (i can actually, i was a technology major and hated it) but that doesn't mean it's not hard. all work is hard.

    I love this video but when you say "not trying is pretty lame lmao" can I just add that sometimes it's worth not putting in that extra 5% effort to change a B from an A if it means you will be happier, healthier and better rested as a result?
    As a former chronic overworker, my current uni mindset is to try my best but keep it in perspective. There are times when I think "I could get an A* here, but I'd be sacrificing *insert sleep/food/exercise/happiness* so I am going to stop now." I could overwork and get an A* in one module, but it's honestly better to be a more well-rounded person. I'd rather get all Cs and graduate as a healthy, happy, well-adjusted person. That will benefit my career far more in the longrun than falling into the trap of hustle culture and enter work as an exhausted ex-student burdened with added mental health issues lol. Just my two cents!

    • @mohamedaminehadji6415
      @mohamedaminehadji6415 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      That's an extremely interesting perspective to me. I'm basically the opposite: I used to study less to be a more well-rounded person and ended up with an equivalent of a B when I knew I could have pulled an all-nighter and get an A instead. My reasoning was exactly the same as yours: I want to overall enjoy life and not kill myself working. However, the further I went to my academic career, the more I felt like this was (considered) a bad attitude. Nobody told it to me directly, but I could see that I was struggling in some classes _because_ I didn't study enough in the previous ones. Of course, the struggle is not significant, but I did feel stupid and somehow guilty when a teacher, and now my supervisor, says something that we are supposed to know, and I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't know it. I'm just scolding my old self by thinking "if I had studied more at that point, I would not struggle today".

    • @PleaseHelpAllene
      @PleaseHelpAllene 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Caitlin Montgomery I think she’s just referring to the people who just maybe show up to class and that’s it. I make straight Bs for the same reason you stated, it’s a good grade and I’m not sacrificing my well being. But there are so many of my classmates who just show up on the day of a test and are like “ha I never even opened the book once, I’m just gonna get an F, it’s fine haha” and I’m like “YOU PAID $100s of dollars just for this one class and you aren’t gonna even study for 15 mins?” If you don’t have time for a class then don’t take it, IMO. Part time school is okay too but going full time and then just completely neglecting classes isn’t okay. It wastes so much money and really hurts people in the long run and I think that’s what she meant by people not trying. There’s a difference between barely or not even doing the minimum and choosing to not overwork yourself.

      One hundred Percent that b - honestly just knowing that it was better to do this now and get it out of the way than to take a break and come back later. Antidepressants also helped for that boost of positivity, but to be honest they kind of blocked some of the deeper feelings so be careful about that. They did give me a boost but kind of stopped me from getting to into my bad thoughts so I didn’t really work through some things until after graduation.
      Also sometimes I just had to see things from a good perspective, like appreciating that I had the opportunity to learn and be around interesting smart people every day. I do love learning and though it’s overwhelming just look at it like everything you learn might help you one day and isn’t humanity just so cool? It’s hard to be like that when you’re depressed but changing the way you’re thinking about it can help a lot.
      Of course crying to my friends and family every once in a while was therapeutic :)
      I would also give the advice to take full advantage of the resources at your school. The career center, study abroad, mental health, groups etc. There are so many offices and people to help you and to let you find internships and opportunities. I wish I had just gone into those offices and gotten to know people and had them help me with whatever. I did do a study abroad and it was such a valuable life experience. But I should’ve been going to my professors and the career center and really trying to make connections for jobs after graduation. I was thinking I can just figure it out after I graduate but I wish I had worked on it before I left more.
      Another thing is I wish I had worked more on my physical health and what I was eating and exercising. I felt I didn’t have time for that but I think it helps a lot for your mental health to work on your physical health. I’m making up for years of bad eating now.
      Good luck!!! You got this!! Always remember that you’re not alone and there are millions of other people struggling the same way you are. You are not alone! And you’re doing a great thing for yourself so just get it done and don’t give up

Don’t let your self be dragged down by depression. It’s hard I know, I was there, and now I keep myself afloat by sheer power of will and my faith. It gets hard but sometimes if you flip it around for a different perspective it can give you the energy just to make it through the day. Instead of ugh I have to go to class be like yes I get to go to class! It’s cheesy.. I know. Seek help if it gets too hard. Remember that you deserve to be there. You’re smart. You’re capable. You’re worthy. You do your life at your own pace. You’re probably beautiful too. It comes from the inside out. I’m tired ranting now, good night.

Earlier that semester, I lost my grandmother and it took such a toll on my mental health that I ended up dropping two classes which made me go below 12 credit hours. That's when I decided to get registerd with disabilities. My instructors were accommodating and it was great to be able to register for my classes earlier than everyone else. It's not always easy to talk to people about these kind of things, but it's so important!

People who study physics and astrophysics don't know what sleeping is. One time professor even told one of the students to sleep less if they don't have enough time for homework. No wonder that half of the people there droped out or changed their major during first year. Also it's weird thing in our university but they lowkey hate physicists. If you have questions outside of your class you will never find anyone to talk to or if you do they just don't care. I switched to chemisty after my second year 'couse I wasn't in a state to survive four more. I had to start studying chemistry from first year again but I don't regret it. It's way less overwhelming and people at the uni actually care about chemists. But sleepless nights never went anywhere.

I was a straight A student until I graduated high school and I chose a college program that is not only hard but also doesn’t play to my strengths as a student. So sometimes , for me anyway, a C is as good as an A now bc it’s most often a product of really hard work. I’m still struggling with not equating self worth with grades but I think I’ve taken a big step as a person understanding that as long as I’ve been trying my hardest, those grades are more than good enough, even if my hardest doesn’t lead to the best grade
    (Also, I am in Greek life and pretty much my sorority is my friend groups and where I get the most support as a student bc there’s so many different levels of experience. But I’m in a sorority that focuses on academics and everyone is in the same types of majors so I’m sure it’s a lot easier for me to make grades a priority than others)

    I was a public health major, and a part of my class’ undergrad project was creating a conversation about food insecurity on our campus. Throughout this project a big realization was that college students are largely untraditional. Meaning they aren’t necessarily coming straight from high school, they aren’t supported by their parents, and they have may have cultural diversities that can prevent success or ease of getting through college in 4 years. Looking at food insecurity really focused on how over worked students are to the point where they have to choose between getting good grades, paying rent, and eating. And this conversation is different when also considering if a student is supporting their family or are considered a large part of their homes income. It’s sad stuff. Even sadder when you present this info to your school’s administrators and they basically shrug and look the other way 👀

    so i'm currently on both ends of college (I'm getting my second masters degree and teaching freshmen classes at my university). Part of me really feels for these kids--the money they're spending on school, the stress they're under, all of it. But... I have to say, some students have vastly different work ethics than others. I cut corners where i can (as in, where i won't get caught if the class promises to be fuckin cool about it). i scan the textbook and tell them not to buy it. I'm as easy of a grader as i can be (basically, i look at the rough draft and compare it to the final draft to see how much work was put into revision, or if they were listening to me). my main goal is making sure they come out of the class better writers and thinkers.
    But. I'm on my third year teaching now. My first year, students were really on it: they knew to show up to class on time (i usually excuse a tardy if they have a good excuse or it doesn't happen frequently), they knew not to use their phones in class, they turned their papers in on time every time, and more importantly they listened. last year, I noticed a slight change in that behavior (for both of the sections I taught) and this year, I have students straight up playing games on their phone in my class, showing up 20 minutes late with starbucks and being shocked when that counts as an absence, and getting upset with me because i take off points if an essay is late (they're allowed to ask for an extension if they contact me 48 hours before the deadline--and even on that i'm often lenient).
    It's not really a pride or respect thing that bothers me (I'm not a real professor, after all. i only have my MA and am still working on my MFA), it's more just the disregard for the class and then the surprise that they can't eek by and get an A. And I'm not sure it's because i'm a young woman and look younger (24 but I get told I look 18) or just that the recent generation has serious issues with their attention span. I lose them within minutes. i had a student ask me two weeks into class how he was supposed to know what readings to do for the class and i wanted to explode (like that syllabus we spent 50 minutes going over on the first day?? maybe that?)
    Idk. i don't wanna sound like an old asshole and really want to be patient with them, but from my perspective... i think high school kinda failed them in explaining why it actually is important for them to put effort into caring and teaching them how to be self-sufficient in organizing their course load.
    Anyway, PSA: It is a million times easier to hand out As than actually take the time to grade papers carefully and insightfully, so if you think your professor is grading you harshly because they hate you, I promise they're not--because that is way more work for them. go to office hours if you're struggling. don't take 8am classes if you're bad at waking up early. start the essay when the assignment is handed to you. pay attention in class. college is fucking rough, i'm there now. but my main piece of advice is plan ahead and be attentive when your instructor is talking.
    also, if you're not doing great in a class... maybe don't tell your professor you got trashed at a party the night before the friday morning class??

      How small do you think a generation is? You're younger only 24 years old and 3 years into your teaching at the time of writing and are already pulling the "this generation" card. All the students you have taught thus are the same generation, including the first year students you praised. It's all down to the the individuals. Please don't generalize everything to an entire generation. A generation is a huge and diverse group of people that come from a wide array of backgrounds. I'm sorry if I'm coming off bluntly but I feel like the concept of generations is abused so much nowadays. Let's move away from the generalizations acknowledge some things are just down to the individual and can't extended to describe some group they happen to be part of.

    I’m a graduate student in mechanical engineering. My undergrad took me 3.5 years, which required me taking between 18 and 21 credits a semester. I graduated with honors. During that time I was a structures lead for a satellite which I am now publishing a conference paper for (and is going to be launched on virgin orbit’s maiden launch!), interned for one of the top aerospace/defense companies in the world, helped build and race an off-road vehicle, worked on the development of a robotic fish, and had a completely unrelated 20 hour a week job. I didn’t go to parties but I always made time to exercise an hour to an hour and a half an evening. There were some weeks where I was exhausted but people always asked why I never looked stressed. Here’s how I did it.
    1) utilize your off time-class schedules are weird and perhaps conducive to being unproductive but USE THEM. If you can finish a problem for an assignment (or assignment) in the half hour you have between classes, then you will have so much more time later. Having an evening is way more rewarding than small little breaks. Little half hours, or even fifteen minutes, add up.
    2) I’m not a fan of those agenda type lifestyles where you block out your homework and everything but it’s important to know when you’re free and when you’re not. Get some sort of schedule- homework for this class on this day, and so on. Once you’re done with the tasks you’d planned for the day, stop. Don’t do anything else. I would tell myself “thermo on this day, fluids the next, engr analysis the next.” Stephen King does this with his writing. He’ll make a word count goal, and then he’ll stop working for the day once he’s reached it.
    3) don’t study with others. I know this seems counterintuitive if you feel like you need help but I’ve done the best and spent the least amount of time on work when I’ve done it all by myself.
    4) physical activity. It’s pretty easy to ignore your physical and mental health, but sports activities (I play all sorts of intramurals) allow you to be social and to get some needed exercise. I think everyone who exercises feels better.
    5) hard =\= bad. Degrees aren’t easy. They take discipline and they take determination. Getting tired is okay. Giving up when things get tough isn’t. If you find yourself asking why you’re still working, remind yourself it’s because you’re getting a degree that will help get you the job you want, and that once the degree is done, you’ll have gotten so much from just one extra hour of staying up, or studying extra when you don’t feel prepared even if you don’t know if you can.
    6) if you’re tired, take a break. Take a half hour to clear your mind. Do something you enjoy like a hobby. If it’s late and you’re tired, then stop. My most productive hours were 5 AM- 8 AM. At 11 or midnight when I started getting tired, I’d put my stuff down and sleep. If I could get five hours in a row, then I would call that good. The morning I found especially productive because I was calm and refreshed. I’d get up, make some tea and oatmeal, and do my work. I found getting up early helped me focus better in class as well because by the time my 8:30 classes started, I was mentally awake.
    7) avoid distractions. I know it’s really hard to sit down and just work for three hours straight. I would put my phone in another room, grab my airpods, and then press play on an instrumental Spotify playlist so I could have some background noise. The first five or ten minutes you have the urge to stop and fidget. To get one thing on paper or one paragraph typed and then do something else. Resist. Keep going. Before you know it, two hours will have gone by and you’ll have made significant progress in your work.

      Agree completely! And I have 10 years of post-secondary education, a masters, professional certification, and am six weeks from having a Ph.D in a difficult field, so I know the grind rather well.
      At conferences, us Ph.D students would get together and play the "who works the most" game. I won every time, because I had a ridiculously high teaching load for someone in my field at an academically rigorous institution. But what I didn't tell other Ph,D students is that I probably slept the most too, and had the most "me time". I spent time reading books on productivity and learned from those how to schedule "deep work" and not waste time on useless busy work. And I listened to fun fiction audiobooks while cleaning my house or any other spare moment when I was using my hands but not my brain. It gave me a break from the real world that I desperately needed, while still being productive. The weekend before my dissertation proposal defense (aka the presentation that determines your entire future) I actually took a vacation with friends, because there was nothing else I could do but work myself into a tizzy... I live with the fear that my Ph.D student friends will someday figure out how "lazy" I actually am. But it isn't lazy. It is self care and knowing my limits. Research indicates that after about 45 hours, people experience exponential diminishing returns on productivity compared to the effort they put in. So rather than banging my head against the wall when I reach that point, I take a break. The hard part is deciding what to do in those 45 hours, and guarding that time like a momma bear guards her cubs...
      And its turned out very well for me. I just accepted a tenure track job at a prestigious institution. So my "laziness" did not kill my career.

      o o full time is 12+ hours aka 3 classes per semester. Most people take 4 classes, and it costs extra money (that must come out of pocket, so most can’t) to take more than a certain number of credits like no more than 18 at my private university. So on average, people take 15/16 hours (4 classes) a semester at base price.

    I've noticed when it comes to school related hustle culture that if a highschooler has too much on their plate, people assume they're spending all their free time texting and having a social life or anything beyond doing school and chores and sleep is looked down upon. Once it comes to college, people seem to assume that the ones who are having a hard time are wasting all their time and money partying. You mentioned the homeless college students and immediately I thought "so many people would say they're only homeless because they're partying." It's awful.
    Also, between watching these videos and taking a class, I got an add for a college in the middle of this video talking a out how important it is to get a degree. 🤦‍♀️

    I think I may be in the "Cs get degrees" category so I've never killed myself studying for a test or burning myself out over an essay. The day my thesis was due I was still writing it, so that should show the kind of laid-back student I am. I'd rather just get by and have my sleep and mental health in tact rather than strive endlessly to get a slightly better grade. So long as I pass, I'm happy. Bragging about lack of sleep is weird to me. I think I pulled two all-nighters during my English degree and had one sleepless night due to stress but otherwise I valued my sleep.
    That being said, I don't have the easiest time in college. I got a BA in English and Media Studies and it was a complete waste of time. I think everyone should take a mandatory gap year after secondary school because I hadn't a clue what I wanted to do at 18, and I'd say that's true for a lot of people. You can't get those early-20s years back and I wish I'd realised that. Now I'm in my final year of a whole other degree and it's a much better fit for me and I'm happy most of the time, but there are still struggles.
    I feel like we're fed this narrative that college is the best time of your life and you'll have so much fun, make so many friends, be so inspired, meet so many people (i.e have a lot of sex), and when that doesn't happen, as it didn't/isn't happening for me, you feel like you're wasting time or missing opportunities. The ideal I had about college definitely didn't live up to the reality.

    From an argentinian student, yes, sleepless culture is very much a thing, and for me it started in high school, around 14 years old, people started pulling all nighters for some periods. It is also worth noticing that a lot of people here start working at an early age because of the crisis and stuff, so they have to juggle that from young. This is a personal thing, but my high school is considered one of "the best" and yeah I have pulled all nighters a lot, there's also a certain degree of glorifying not eating enough (influenced by the crisis and lack of money for some families), and yeah, I have had to go to the doctor's office bc of low blood sugar and some of my friends too because of that and lack of sleep. It doesn't help that we're in a crisis (I know I repeat this a lot, but it can really affect a lot of aspects of your daily life) so there's constant anxiety and we're more prone to mental issues (Argentina was rated the most unhappy country).
    One the other hand, college is free and with good education, so we don't have to worry about that, but the work load is a lot too, and the same problems in high school get worse. I'm only 16 so I'm basing this in stuff friends that are in college tell me. Getting a job is kind of really hard, and believe me the minimum wage is definitely not enough to survive.

    This honestly strikes home for me. Any of the STEM degrees require you to do a crap ton of difficult math and science classes that usually have a LOT of homework associated with them . Most of us STEM grads all look back and shudder at undergrad memories because there was nothing pleasant about these classes. You are stressed, tired, and scared you’re going to fail everyday. Worse, you don’t even get to do anything fun because you’re always in class, labs, or you’re studying. Pretty much you only interact with people in your classes and most of them are there only for classes and don’t give a crap about you

    The spoon theory is for people with chronic illnesses but it was also how I felt when I was battling depression. I would go to school and be so tired and everyone would keep repeating to just do the work and I was screaming inside how I had already done so much! I had stood up from my bed, and showered, and ate, and organized my backpack. And all those things sound so little and trivialized and stupid to be tired from. But I just felt like that. And no one understood.

    Ok so talking about your adderall section, I was prescribed adderall in 6th grade by a pediatrician who never once tested me for ADD. After a few years I couldn't function without it.
    Fast forward to college and I start abusing it more heavily. We're talking taking 60 to 90 mg a day plus some instant release tablets. I was pulling an all nighter twice a week so I could make it to my 8am class cause I wouldn't wake up otherwise.
    I quit cold turkey my second semester and had to drop out, suffered from severe anxiety the next couple years and have finally gotten to the point were I feel somewhat normal about 2 years ago. I still suffer from anxiety every so often unfortunately.

    I was a good student in middle and high school, without much stress, so i always thought of myself as smart, and i`ve heard it a lot as well from teachers and other students.
    But uni destroyed my self-esteem completely. The first year I was really trying so hard, but was barely in the upper-middle of my class. It was frustrating and i sort of 'burned out' and started doing bare minimum required to stay on scholarship.
    I was focused on school and failed social life - here comes anxiety, social phobia, depression.
    It`s so frustrating when you do your best, then talk to teachers and feel like the most stupid piece of shit. Hate this 5 years of my life.
    Yeah, and i`m from Ukraine, liberal arts major, community uni, but i`ve managed to fail even this. Oh, yeah and dorm with 4 people in a room.

    I'm starting university next week. Burnout is SO REAL. I just came up from a really dark and existential period of my life after graduating high school. I did some research and it turns out that dark/existential feelings come from chronic burnout, a.k.a attempting to achieve high standards for an elongated period of time... Needless to say, that's been me for the last two years. It all makes sense now.
    Anyway, I'm slowly learning what I need to be able to function as a human and be productive at the same time.

    Since late 2018 I've been working full-time while going to college. In 2019, I entered my second year and my workload more than quadrupled, I've been taking 5 classes while working full time, trying (and failing) to maintain my own apartment, and all that. For years I've struggled with caffeine addiction (of a very serious nature), and I went 8 months clean. Then the stress of 4 classes and full time work caused me to relapse and I got back into drinking so much caffeine that I started seeing a resurgence of some heart problems that nearly killed me three years earlier. COLLEGE NEEDS TO CHANGE!
