I'm at 300 hours in Arma but maybe only 200 is from flying. I know what you mean about 300 hours being rookie numbers. I still crash more than half the time when I try to land. Flying is easy. Landing is hard :-)
I've been getting back into arma recently and flying quite a bit lately, I've always been able to fly because me and my mates used to play the dayz mod on arma 2 and 3 a while back and I'm starting to play more KOTH I was so used to the default controls(shame on me) but now I've been flying in the editor using your keybinds I'm starting to get the hang of things, my landings aren't perfect and neither is my flying but they are getting there, day by day I'm making improvements and it's getting there (Slowly). Your videos on heli tutorials are a big help and I find myself looking back over them to try and see what your doing to help improve. Keep up the great videos, Have a good one. ;)
Thanks to you and your vids I have transported nearly 50 k ppl in KOTH HC servers leveling up quickly. I wouldnt do it without your tips mate. @@CallMehTOMMEH I tried switching over to your keybinding set but Arma 3 Heli controls are so ingrained in my muscle memory and stuff and having the helicopter reacting on the mouse instead of me being able to view around with the mouse... that made me go from a somewhat experienced pilot back to total noob, when I tried it out in the editor. I may not be able to do these fancy landings right in the zone most of the time (atleast as long as I don't decide to buy a Joystick), but I comfort myself with the thought that most of the time it is too dangeours for my passengers anyway to land right inside the zone. Instead most of the time I either land them on the opposite side of where the priority area is or, when the team has fully lost control of the zone; I decide to land either further away from it in cover or just paradrop them. But I also don't have a killer PC for Arma, low framrate makes landing hard.

Hardly any hours in the game, but flying the helicopters is one of my favorite parts and has made me something of the defacto pilot of the friend group. Ac/DC on Spotify in the other tab so I can press play when the engine starts, and it’s a good time
Just started watching your Arma helo vids - they're banging! As a new pilot, I couldn't do any of the "Helicopters Showcase" mission and was getting extremely frustrated. However, once I changed the dire standard keybindings as suggested (I reversed the collective keys though because for some reason, I prefer to hit "S" for up and "W" for down) - BOOM - mission passed! Thanks very much for the advise and please carry on teaching us noobs. I am currently trying to master the J-Hook. It's difficult!! P.S. I forgot to say - the MOST useful component of the videos is when you have the overlay showing your keypresses - more of that please mate.
Good video man and if anyone is wondering how to be able to see more when landing if you hold CTRL and page down this will move to camera down some so you can see the ground, also if you press CTRL and 2 on the Numpad it will move the camera back. Hope this helped someone.
a cheap DIY eye tracking or cheap eye tracking headset does wonders. Even if you try the DIY eye tracking set up you will never want to fly without it.
I was so tempted to try and recover it but then I thought "no Tommeh, this is meant to look like a BAD landing", so I threw in a barrel roll for good measure lol.
I love your videos talking about landings in arma 3. Also sometimes its hard to take time because of this one guy that speaks in the voice chat all the time and calls you trash, but i just drop them out of the heli if he starts trash talking :)
Man don't even listen to them, people can be toxic on Arma. Just do your thing. As long as you enjoy it and you're not killing your team mates ALL the time, it's all good fun :)
God I really hated learning this....... I thought I was a good heli pilot on rust and that it would translate..... This is a whole new world man. Super glad to have your videos to learn from man! You've taught me so much in my first 100 hours flying. I've spent countless hours in editor practicing and practicing. And eventually am FINALLY getting compliments on MP servers. People are noticing that I'm a slight notch above the other pilots. And I owe it to you man :)
Thanks for the nice video, it helped me a lot. I train to fly now. And i have something to add to your video. I dont fly on standard, but on extended flight model, and i found out, that this slow take off is based on auto trimming. So if you fly on extended flight model without autotrimming, you can take off, accelerate and turn much more quicklier. But! But u have to fight with your heli to stabilze it, cuz it will try to loose control. But if you dont loose the control, its much more better than standard flight model. But standard flight model has a pro argument too. You can fly between houses.
Got the heli practice mod. So 50 ish tries without it, and 50 tries in the practice tool I can J hook on location almost every time from full speed into balance. I use and Xbox controller. Thanks for all the help I wonder if I’ll be able to do those tight spots on controller eventually…

i use wasd no mouse is use mouse every so often but when im more in a pawnee but i use it very little when im using it for transport i keep like the thing where u can turn ur head locked then i hold it down when i need to use my mouse for flying
Is there any rudder/yaw in this maneuver, at least for the most part? I find I tend to have my nose tilt towards the sky when I pitch up with these kinds of maneuvers.
CallMehTOMMEH what are your video settings, because i get 20 frames in the city and 50 out of the city and I dont have a shit PC. Also what finger do you use to press "X" and "S" when you are doing a j-hook
Question for you, noticed with like the RHS Littlebird it has the tendency to want to level out and bleed speed instead of keeping in a slight nose down attitude in normal flight or when coming in on an attack run have to fight to keep it nose down. Is there any to stop this ?

Yeah the 300 hours thing is very true I only started getting good once I got to like 800 hours and I have nearly 1500 hours now.
Yeah man, Arma is a slow-burner! The flight model may seem arcadey to some, but it's actually quite hard to master! Hours make pilots great. Simple!
I haven't learned how to land helicopters even though I have 1000

if you're hooking left the pedal can help slow you down smoothly as it takes you out of trim or right pedal if going right.

The j hook landings are my favourite, they feel so natural.

In my personal experience, just take a good look of where you’re gonna land and know the size of whatever you’re flying. The rest is just practice ig
You get a feel for the little birds, and can stuff them into small spaces

Question for you, noticed with like the RHS Littlebird it has the tendency to want to level out and bleed speed instead of keeping in a slight nose down attitude in normal flight or when coming in on an attack run have to fight to keep it nose down. Is there any to stop this ?

When you say balance what are you talking about and how do you know when your speed and altitude are balanced
Balance as in if you increase throttle, you gain altitude, if you decrease throttle, you lose altitude. This is the balanced state :)
