Remarkable timbre (even in pp and mezza voce), evenness of and constancy in sound production (in other words, beautiful legato), and free and open tone. Comments about deficiency of technique herein puzzle me, except that he doesn't sound like those that so "sing in the mask" that you can scarcely hear them. I go to the opera house to hear voices like this sing. Joan Sutherland and her husband, Richard Bonynge, as well as the great Leonard Bernstein, all thought highly of and ardently promoted Jerry. A truly tragic loss to all vocal fans.
