I love both of them, but since people are talking about this I thought I’d jump in. Voices don’t fit into specific “parts”. That’s a stupid idea to believe in, since voices are so different. If you do want to use the Fach system, Thomas Hampson is a high baritone, but a baritone nevertheless. He can sing in a tessitura that’s a little higher than a normal baritone’s, and that’s what makes him perfect for high baritone parts (including carmine burana, which I love him in). He is leagues ahead of many of his colleagues in terms of his acting, technique, and language. If you really couldn’t spot his genius in his clip, opera is not for you.

This the greatest duet for tenor and baritone, and Jerry and Alan nailed it that night.

It’s fascinating to see the rehearsal process. These were all great singers. I still don’t understand about Hadley - singers with a fraction of his voice switched over to character roles and made new careers for themselves.
