I loved mine, the hydraulic steering on fast bends especially. But that lack of electric assistance made it hard work in the city, and the reason I sold it.

debbie peter got to watch out for gearbox issues. Belt history is always important to get, and watch out for the classic French electrical issues 🤪 still have mine now on my channel, just got in back out!
I took ownership of a 2001, 143k mile 172 last Sept. Was my Dad's for 17 years (1st owner), it's got issues for sure, but the engine and chassis are pretty tight, still pulls to 7200 and love the gear shift light that comes on high 6s. I went to this from my BMW M135i (owned for 4 1/2 years) but lack of miles, around 25 per, meant the BMW was wasting away. Have to agree with Henry, as a daily driver to poke about in, cheap motoring without all the mods cons they are superb! Parting shot, my folks are in their mid 70s and until last Sept were nipping about in the Clio 172 Sport. Not bad, not bad at all !
Really was a good period in hot hatches. The power wars have ruined most newer cars but the Clio was just fun. Light, enough power, cheap to run and actually pretty reliable.
I bought a 172 as a weekend/fun couple of years ago and it's one of the best car buying decisions I've ever made. It's huge fun all the time, despite being noisy, scruffy, badly equipped and having a terrible seating position it's the car I always go to first, even when there have been much smarter/newer/faster cars on the driveway next to it.
I also have a clio 182, it puts such a smile on my face whenever I drive it. If anyone is thinking of getting one I recommend it! Just beware you may have to spend a fare amount fixing it up if you want it in tip top shape - or do it yourself!
More content, please. Would love to see the dampers upgraded and what difference it makes. Maybe a coating on the wheel? Amazing how cheap this is to insure too (for someone middle aged like me at least).

Love the genuine real world review. Thanks. I imagine you don't think twice about going to the supermarket and parking wherever. Imagine the stress if you only had a DB11 to get that pint of milk... If the steering wheel is getting a bit gunny, we would use an orange cleaner (Australia) , which is the sort of cleaner that removes adhesive off plastic without damage. You will have removed the buildup and be back to normal. If the wheel vinyl is braking down, a steering wheel cover is the answer.
Nice to see you own one. My 172 is lovely and wouldn't sell it. Nice little video. Funny you say it's not as well built as a Honda (known for build quality) that's almost 20 years newer (where technology and robots have upped the game)
This where the last simple, reliable, easy to maintain and fairly fuel efficient hot hatches. Even a well sorted 1.6 k4m with a couple of upgrades can be a lot of fun and for not a lot of money. Thanks for listening to the minorities Henry!
I kept my Clio for almost a decade, sold it with 205 000 kilometres on and no issues. I miss it so fucking much, it had a very distinctive feel of a drive, despite it being completely analogical and old school it had something that used to inspire me to just chill. Even miling it used to be fun. Ever sisnce i sold it i've been looking for the same sort of feel in other more modern cars ou there. Haven't found it yet, every single car i drive now seems bland.
Not many years ago these cars where far simpler than today's. Nowadays if a hot hatch doesn't have a 7" display for nav and apps, 18" wheels, lexus levels of insulation, sun roof, an f1 quick tranny, all wheel drive and all of this stuff it is considered an average car. We are living times where manufactures are forced to stuff these cars fully ladden to the roof to get any sales. As a result they are impressive in therms of performance, super expensive, luxurious, ostentacious but they miss what we used to see in the simple ways. I speak for myself. Ive driven really expensive cars, trully incredible and competent in everything they do and yet i miss my Clio so much... it was just a car meant to do what it was supposed to do and nothing else but the connection to the road was just so much more engaging, any time spent driving, even in traffic was a time well spent... if i had to pick one car to drive to heaven, people would be surprised with my choices. I had more fun in my Clio than i had in an APR Golf R and an CLS 63 amg. I just fail to relate to most of these car reviwers nowadays, all praising numbers and dragraces but meanwhile driving these cars for real is just boring. You need to floor them hard for the kicks but thats it.

debbie peter got to watch out for gearbox issues. Belt history is always important to get, and watch out for the classic French electrical issues 🤪 still have mine now on my channel, just got in back out!
Bought one new. Got 275,000kms out of it over 13 years. Gearbox died at the end. I have a Fiesta ST now but I still miss the little Clio. What a car!
My first car. I still love to bits.
Carfection, Catchpole, Clio 182! - Perfection! 👍👍👍
I had a black 2001 Clio 1.4 Alize, loved it.
I had a 182 with cup packs for a while. Excellent little motor. I liked the RS brand so much I eventually bought a Megane 265 Cup. Also superb fun.
That smile @4:06 was genuine happiness
Really was a good period in hot hatches. The power wars have ruined most newer cars but the Clio was just fun. Light, enough power, cheap to run and actually pretty reliable.
I'm delighted that you love your car. I hope you're going to do a video about your favourite sofa next.
Loved my 182 you hit the nail on the head, they are just fun!
You can have the steering wheel retrimmed for about £200 worth every penny
i used to have one... such a great car to drive, so agile and fun.
My 182 has just ticked over 118k miles and is still going strong!
Been waiting for this video for ages! Made me want one more
I also have a clio 182, it puts such a smile on my face whenever I drive it. If anyone is thinking of getting one I recommend it! Just beware you may have to spend a fare amount fixing it up if you want it in tip top shape - or do it yourself!
The good thing about that Clio 182 is that you can have fun and chuck it about without worrying about repair cost.
Well done! My 1st car was a 172 , most fun I ever had in a FWD! Lift-off oversteer on demand 😬
More content, please. Would love to see the dampers upgraded and what difference it makes. Maybe a coating on the wheel? Amazing how cheap this is to insure too (for someone middle aged like me at least).
Had a few of these, brilliant cars. On the lookout for a clean low mileage 172 cup
We all want more content like this!!
Nice to see a car normal people can afford. Would love to see more of these. I like the beard.
What do you mean normal? Average person here in San Diego doesn't drive something that cheap.. I'm 26 and I've got 2 cars and a Dodge ram for work purposes.
@@db_auto_photography4539 you're making yourself sound like a jerk.
Normal as in what someone on an average salary could relatively easily afford.
@@bencritchley2005 im not sure how I came across as being rude, I am sorry. I am just confused on what normal meant. No hard feelings man. I know not everyone is in the position I am
There are plenty of channel's that review everyday cars find one
@@db_auto_photography4539 no worries. The way it was phrased made it sound more like a brag than an actual question.
I'm sure they'll still be reviewing things more like the civic type r at the £30-40k which is probably more like the budget you're thinking so I'm sure they'll still keep you happy :)
My affection for this video is unexplainable
Cracking write up. catches it brilliantly.
Clio 182 - All The Small Things.
Nice one! XD
"True care truth brings
,
I'll take one lift
,
Your ride best trip" - actual lyrics kind of fit hehe
Love the genuine real world review.
Thanks.
I imagine you don't think twice about going to the supermarket and parking wherever.
Imagine the stress if you only had a DB11 to get that pint of milk...
If the steering wheel is getting a bit gunny, we would use an orange cleaner (Australia) , which is the sort of cleaner that removes adhesive off plastic without damage.
You will have removed the buildup and be back to normal.
If the wheel vinyl is braking down, a steering wheel cover is the answer.
Really tempted to get one of these as a toy! Now that I know you own one, I think I definitely need to get one!
I'd love to see more of these honest real world reviews! Cheers Harry!
Nice to see you own one. My 172 is lovely and wouldn't sell it. Nice little video.
Funny you say it's not as well built as a Honda (known for build quality) that's almost 20 years newer (where technology and robots have upped the game)
Magnificent! ❤
Loved my 182. Perfect for UK roads.
This where the last simple, reliable, easy to maintain and fairly fuel efficient hot hatches. Even a well sorted 1.6 k4m with a couple of upgrades can be a lot of fun and for not a lot of money. Thanks for listening to the minorities Henry!
Reminds me of my old Suzuki Swift Sport. Not as fast as your Clio but amazing fun on anything twisty. Fantastic controllable oversteer.
That is not what I expected you to drive as a daily driver, but it is great!
I almost thought you turbo charged the damn thing when i heard that whistle noise in the opening!
Older hot hatches seem to have so much more character
Had a 182 Trophy, proper little old school hot hatch.
Mine was exactly the same as this without the exhausts and had it from new for 5 years. Apart from my old Mk1 106 Rallye it's the only car I miss
Awesome video as usual (feel like a broken record saying that). Would love to see more!
