14 years later:
One of the best cars ever made.
200 for tyres ,alloys and suspension
Nowadays that would be in the thousands
just alloys would be atleast 1 or 2 thousands
For 200 u will get your name on the "Cock" list
The £14,000 price tag was about $20,000 US, which won't even get you an actual *car* new today in the US.
200 for pass silver to dark rims, better tires, better shock absorbers, harder spring and -15mm, bigger front rolling and axle pivot
MyFriendMe Nissan Versa is 15,000 new
I'm still driving mine 14 years later :)
Please i dont get it how do i know if its a 182 of 172
mesmoland had my 172 for 9 years.. I love it
I’ve got a mk3 Clio dynamique with all the sports kit in grey and I love it. Was thinking about getting a new Clio but I can’t lol. Am I sad enough lol?
@@hielkegrijpstra8056 172 I believe only has one exhaust on the back and with the 182 has two but my 172 had the seats saying it was a Renault Clio 172.
I also have 182 cup Liquid Yellow :))) great car for that money...
This is what you call a "fast slow car."
Love these little guys.
@Purch I think he’s on about the car
Crazy that this did 0-60 in 7 seconds and 10 years later fords Mk7 ST only does it in 6.9
Infamouz ST isn't made to be fast my guy. It's just for fun
EP3 Civic much more fun and much cheaper
Well if I remember correctly the ek9 buck in the 90 made it in high 6 or low 7
More fun how?
Civic is not a supermine hatch.
Had a race with one of these in my MK7 ST (I’m not a chav I promise) and the Clio really isn’t to be messed with, was nearly keeping up with the much newer ST. Unbelievable car the Clio
Amazing right
what a line-up XD
I was baited into racing a fast Ford on my first day of ownership. More luck than judgement but although the Ford pulled away slightly l, the Clio did keep up. But on the corners the traction felt to be on a knifes edge and the Ford looked comfortable.
Still one of if not the best hot hatch ever made. Most enjoyable car I've had.
You sure?
Literally a tripod in corners😅😅😅
@@Therealgamer544I can confirm this
Almost the best chassis setup Renault ever made.
Better than 1999-2007 Toyota MR2?
Plastic? weight reduction bro!
elementmaniac 12 thousand dollar rebuilt SOOOOOOOOOOON
rimwydas44 TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLAR ENGINE REBUILD, SOOOOOOON!
Sparco seats bro!
+WasmachinemanTT5/R™ Steering rack BRO!!!
So good car
Love that 4age 20v silvertop
The best old school hot hatch ever made, really lovable right now!! The cup pack gets better than traditional!! Clio forever!!
Fabio Trevisan No.
Put the glue down
From the 2000s it is.
@Jay Leno crap? ok fanboy
Jay Leno civic type r as well
Had two of the Clio RenaultSports .. Original 172 in Iceburg Silver and a 182 in the Racing Blue.
Definitely a car to own for track days.
'MURICA.
Where 8.0ltrs of V10 power only make's 400bhp.
Good job.
Ben Crowson and 5.5L v8s make 120 hp...
Who can beat Mitsubishi Evo's. 2.0 l 440bhp.
I've always found that attitude kind of odd. The first Viper had roughly the same power as the same year Ferrari Testarossa, was quicker, got far better fuel economy, and the Viper's 8.0l V10 weighed substantially less than 4.9l V12 in the Testarossa. Who cares how you make the power, as long as it works?
How about Sweden, where a 5.0 v8 can make 1600 hp with the power of B I O F U E L S
@@Tea_N_Crumpets Biofuel aka ethanol is actually better than regular gasoline for high power engines, so yeah.
Someone who spent that extra £200 back then will be enjoying it now because it definitely adds more than that to the resale value.
2litre engine packed into a sardine can, what u expect? 180hp..
;)
It's naturally aspirated so it's 90hp/l. A 3l would produce 270hp which is very good. But this engine goes up to 210hp on a different setting.
...Very nice for low weight cars. A Mazda mx5 would be pretty quick with this engine
still disappointing as the Peugeot 206 Gti had same power too and weighed the same , i think Renault should have made more of the 3litre V6 versions of the clio that was an epic car
@@christineayres5339 It was heavier. 1100 kg+
@@aczech12 ah ok
This era had some great hatchbacks, Clio 182, Cupra R, Focus RS and the EP3 Type R
He goes from calling it uncomfortable to “amazingly comfortable” in 2 minutes.
I dont get, how, for just 200 pounds, u get amazingly comfortable suspension instead of uncomfortable one!!!!
Uncomfortable in terms of seating position and space, but amazingly comfortable in terms of suspension.
Hes referring to the one costing the extra 200. Has better suspension.
Better doesnt always mean harder and more uncomfortable.
@@kamrankhan-lj1ng because more expensive dampers work better. As do better speing rates etc. Doesnt always mean stiffer and harder.
Renault 8 gordini rides better than a renault 8 1100. And handles better.
Renault 5 turbo rides better than a 5 tl.
So yeah.
The french are quite good at making things handle better while also riding better
2:17 Oh yeah, but can you do this?!
Pewds right?
Yes in my Clio xD
2022 and I’m still driving mine, chipped, lowered 40mm and a scorpion exhaust system. The little beast still goes quick, handles great and sounds awesome just a shame it’s suffering some electrical issues right now. UCH needs replacing I reckon. 😵
I’ve got a 14 year old Collie - he still jumps up at visitors, digs holes, and bombs around the park like a 182 on the Nurburgring ☺️
still have mine. 182 with both cup packs in arctic blue. bought it in 2006. So after 14 years ow ownership, some minor mods, an accident in 2009 and a recent engine build I can say it's a reliable car if it's mantained properly. Why have I kept it? because "it makes you feel ... happy" and that sums it up pretty good :). It's the last hot hatch from renault built to the "small car big engine" recipe and that's why it's so special. It's like an updated 205 GTI and what's not to like about a car as big, but more powerful, more dynamic and still spartan?
Cool
Always keep the car that makes you happy. everyone always regrets that sell if they truly love the car.
I'm not sure which has progressed more in the ~10 years since this episode, car interior plastics or TopGear's editing...
neither
this was aired In 2003 but uploaded on youtube in 2009 so this review is 15years old and and i can assure you that both got even worse
I haven’t seen the new Top Gear, but the Top Gear we all know and love always had amazing editing. Really clever and inventive.
"The raw processing power of The Stigs' foot" Love it.
3:16 its uncomfortable and at 4:14 its suddenly comfortable
Jeremy was referring to it as though it had uncomfortable seating arrangements, but a good suspension set up
cyka blyat Iiii
Cringe.
be nice lol
@@vaughnsigal4560 It has uncomfortable seating arrangements, but you'll get used to it after a while... Maybe 2minutes... :D
My parents got one before I was born. Still to this day working in our teens.
2:16 hahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHHA I bought it 3 days ago and in the middle of the road I thought " why is this seat so upright, pulled the lever and fall back :D ''
Lmao 😂😂
I had two 182s - great cars!
I have a 172 cup now, that’s even more loud in the car
I remember first seeing this episode when I was younger and I still want one
I've always preferred the vtec unit civic r but no credit can be taken away from the amazing clio 180 perhaps the most affordable 4 wheel performance ever made they are brilliant
The Clio Williams in Dark Blue Metallic and Gold alloys was a proper looking car. Never had the opportunity to drive one but I bet it was a right goer and not cheaply assembled like this.
All renaults are cheap
@sugarnads that's just not true at all 😂
Took another sip of the potion
*hit the 3 wheel motion*
One of the best hot hatches ever made
"which actually is pretty good" he says, as he places the time tape lower than richard's knees.
I have the 1.2 Clio 2004 and it just won’t ever break. Already traveled 10 hours in a day trips on it and it never complains. Can’t break those cars even if you want to 😂
pretty unusual for a renault eh😂
"no car company wants to make safe cars" Volvo: "Am I a joke to you?"
Best Clio ever made!
Still driving a 2003 172, electronics bit wonky at times, it's a Renault, but the drive is still great fun!
I owned a 172 Cup for 5 years with no issues.
I always love French cars like this, it's cheap, fun, thrilling and very safe because of its 5 star safety rating which is good news!!!
I came from a 145 bhp 950 kg suzuki baleno gsx 1.8. That was a really fun car to drive. This might be an excellent successor.
Harmen my first car was a ignis sport. My parents had a gsx years ago so I’ve always liked Suzuki. Was the gsx the one that had the sports suspension button?
I wish Top Gear was still like this.
Yes
Best quote: "And it would go and bury its instruction manual in the garden!"
I had a head on collision with a Suzuki swift and my clio literarly plowed through it with just a little piece of the headlight missing
I love Clarksons reviews.. he's truthful and entertaining..
one of the best reviews ever
Still got mine :) saves thousands by keeping it going
clarkson is for chav`s n joe public n laughed at by specialist press who regarded the 182 as the greatest hot hatch at the time,it has one of the greatest chassis ever
i have a 2004 clio initiale paris (you know, automatic transmision) and 2 owners before me. one day in the autumn of 2015, i select drive and pushed the pedal to the bottom. in about 100 meters AND 7 seconds later, i reached a little more than 100 km/h (110km/h, maybe). not so impressive? well, that was before giving it a service, 11 years after their best condition, no good tyres, no 100% suspension condition, AND it has an 1.6L 16v engine (k4m), did i mention that it is automatic (dp0, yeah! that gearbox), yet?
other day, next year, in a highway, i pushed that little car up to 160 km/h. yes, 12 years later from their best condition. and my clio was hungry, he needed more asphalt, but... traffic, you know.
the last week, in other haighway, i finaly pushed as far as i can push it. well, that tiny blue automatic machine with about 16 years of life, passes the barrier (my barrier) of 160km/h, reaching 178 km/h (more or less, the odo is analog), almost the original speed specification for a new condition clio initiale paris.
i'm thinking that this guys and the show should be made by mexicans (i am), we love to push to the limit our little engines witout any modification and most of the times, witout any service made je je. this guys are clearly afraid of the dead jajajajajaja in my opinion. cheers everyone!
Still own mine... love it hardly moves but a big fat smile every time it does 😂
Had a 182 and a 172. Had loads more fun and less problems with the 172 and now my misses owns it
note to self: never skip the rest of the video.
I take it back, It's a good car!
Nice to see a reviewer actually telling it like it is.....
3:20 Uncomfortable
4:16 Amazingly comfortable
Jeremy make up your mind
Stupid old man 😀
@@waldidee1125 Clarkson is a hideously ugly sack of potatoes
i dont think jeremy understands that in non electronic seats, that lever still has ratchets for varying degrees of seating angle
this car is sat in my garage.........owned it for a few years now.
Deborah Fogg broke?
6:35 animated gif please
Not all renault cars are unreliable my dad own's a 21 years old renault 19 chamade it still is in pretty good shape and it never gives any problems
only got a 75hp clio but still its a fun car to go fast in the bends with.
Same
Is it a 1.9tdi Clio 2 phase 1?

What model and engine is it
@@warrior8154 1.4 16v 97hp 2005
@@IngVasiu pretty cool. I have a Clio 2 phase 1 1.9dti around 80hp, but i think some hp is lost during the years 😆
I own the 182 it’s been chipped, lowered by 40mm and has a scorpion exhaust system. Sounds great, goes quick and handles like a dream just having some electrical issues at the moment. 🤔
This should be the next reasonably priced car.
Problem is it's not reasonably priced; It's AMAZINGLY priced.
£14,700 for something that fast is no joke.
bought mine on 2005, still got it and often leaves many new cars behind, got a few mods though, and still only done 74k miles
5:00 Within the first 3 mins, bish bash bosh big smile on your face, every time you sat in one. Summed up the feeling of owning a Clio.
I have the 1.2 16v and though it is slow as a sloth it is a funny little box. Man I love my clio
best old school hot hatch ever made ... RiP jer boyo
The best Renault ever made. Interior looks comfy and the design is cute
@grathouse54
Considering the GT 500 was only 3 seconds faster around the track than the Clio, while costing more than twice as much, I think you get the point. With the little Clio you don't expect it to be fast, but in a 500 horsepower beast (almost) you expect it to be FAST !
There were reasons why they ragged so much on the GT 500.
The best Renault ever made IMO.
Seems like the perfect car to strip out the interior and put in a Momo wheel plus Recarro seats etc.
that's because the stig-tros as we know them now didn't start until series 6. this is from series 4 (episode 6).
The tripod effect as it is being called is not a bad thing, it is 100% lateral load transfer on the non driven axle which reduces grip on the rear due to the way tyres decrease friction coefficient with increasing load, and hence gives you more grip on the front, which means grip distribution closely matches weight distribution, and gives a nicely balanced car through all phases of a corner. As much as I like Jeremy he isn't well informed on vehicle dynamics.
Jeremy doesn't know a lot of things but in this case he meant it as a compliment. He actually says (along with Richard) that "cocking the wheel" is the mark of a "true hot hatch". They LOVE it, and honestly, who doesn't? It's awesome!
@@pranavghantasala6808 I love it when hot hatches turn into tripods. It is the hot hatch equivalent of the massive oversteer cornering shot that everyone loves
7:40 handles better than a reliant robin despite also being on 3 wheels
i had the 172, and got a special ed 182, and a BMW 5 series, which do you think i drive everyday! the 182 everytime, but not on motorways, then its the beemer. a roads and round town nothing touches the clio.
Ma faforite car of all time next to the clio v6 im glad i own a clio myself having fun whit it everyday ✌🏻
"Badly made". Bullsh1t ! I owned one for 8 years and nothing, nothing, went wrong with it.
Clio motors are so well made and durable its incredible, thats why i still got one
Engines have no problem at all but other things do sometimes
I find myself wanting one of these
"Safe as humanly possible"
*laughs in Volvo*
Related: the reason why my parents got a certain wagon when I showed up in their life.
we had a volvo wagon and the engine just caught fire at the beach
Loved this car, have a fiesta St now after years of having a family far and its good but, id go back to the old Clio sport 2ltrs anyday
3:15 you just described my old girlfreind :)
wait... pause it at 7:56. Why is the saab ABOVE the S60R???? Two second difference!
actually the car is too fwd to drift, but if you wanna slide a fwd car you need to either feint, flick, handbrake, or apply brake after you begin cornering. all which would cause slower cornering.
Which one is better as a drivers car? By that I mean the handling in purest form possible. This Clio 182 or Toyota MR2 1999-2007?
Thanks a bunch for the video. 🧡
Just bought a Clio 172 Cup and I completely agree with everything clarkson says.
EVO magazine tested a 182 and got a 6.6 secs time
It was the 182 Trophy which is 60Kg lighter because the climate control unit was removed by default.
only .5 second behind a Golf R32? that's quite good!
I love my little 172 wouldn't trade it for anything!
Would you trade it for a French maid?
I would love one of these in mint condition to sit next to my Mk6 ST150 in the garage. This was an awesome era in motoring, where things were still allowed to be a little bit naughty. Unlike now... sigh.
One of the only proper top gear reviews
I had one. Stunning car with an amazing chassis. Still miss it after moving on to a Megane R26 and then a Megane RS.
love this type of clio
Which season is it and which episode?
Oh and...
The car's ruling the WRC are Citroens.
Not BMW's, not Volkswagens, not Audis, not japanese cars.
So... that should tell you something
And oh
Citroens have way less problems in the WRC than any other brand.
Woah u were here 10 yrs ago
You still alive?
Things look a bit different today
Hope ville is well
@@quillyboyancrew1017 sure thing
I don't know if I should get this or the MK2 Megane RS.
I'd advise the Clio. Much simpler car what with the n/a engine. Parts are cheap and they're easy to work on. Megane will be a money pit. Just a new exhaust is best part of a grand. Fuel economy in a mk2 renaultsport Clio is half decent. Meg will return about 12 mpg when driving it hard. Only downside of the Clio is there are a lot of crap ones about these days. You might need to look at several before you find the right one so it's a numbers game. Good luck
@@matthewmcvicar7755 Thank you.
I never ever understood how a performance package should give you better tires. Yes please, let me pay more for something that will wear out and now I have to buy new ones, but Joe Consumer 9 times out of 10 won't go for the same ones it came with and will go for the cheapest they can get away with. Fit your cars all with the same tires and make sure it gives enough overhead with the speed rating and load index that people can actually afford to replace them with the identical ones.
its funny when jeremy says this clio is fast after testing such many exotics like veyrons zondas etc..
Wait, why are the racing stripes on the left side...in a right hand drive car?
I think because in France you drive on the left
an d up to this day.. i can't find out what song is on 4:45
and 4:50 at it
Top Gear FTW!
I couldn't imagine driving this without lowering the suspension and throwing in some anti-roll bars. It might affect the handling, but going one wheel off the ground in every corner isn't something you'd want either.
Its the sign of a good chassis in a front wheel drive car. All the greats cock a leg in the corner.
as long as you drive normally it is fine. i have a 2002 kangoo van which is basically a higher clio and yes it leans but it stays on the ground with all 4 wheels.
for some reason I've just had my clutch changed by a pal and now my clio 182 runs with some type of misfire. any ideas? plugs leads etc etc been replaced with no luck
Try changing the fuel filter and running some Redex injector cleaner through it.
Pause at 7:12. What are those decals on the door?
Renault clio RS, prachtig correct mooi deze clio prachtig wat een mooie auto 🎉🎉
