Should you accessorize your Rivian?

100% on Rivian’s side when it comes to the slider topic. If any customer truck falls off a lift because of third party slider failure, the customer will unequivocally go after the bigger bankroll … Rivian. Rivian taking responsibility over something that you bolted on that’s now supposed to hold up a 8000 pound truck 7 feet in the air is a silly ask.
That said. I completely agree that Rivian has been very slow in launching factory accessories. And I can see how as a machine it’s not easy to design gear for this truck for a third party.

Great thoughts guys. Since Rivian isn't doing accessories very well, they should work with 3rd parties more and have certified/approved accessories so that they can be included in the warranty. At the same time, I think Rivian is right to do this, they should be focused on production and its own product and not after market stuff. Way to many variables for Rivian to give blanket protection.

Skyler, even if Rivan tests a few (or all) of 3rd party sliders, they could never guarantee the manufacturing process of these sliders. There could be manufacturing processes that result in varying degrees of quality on a per unit basis. It's untenable for Rivian to attempt this type of validation. Folks should either remove the sliders before service or pay Rivian to do it.

I understand this perspective, but disagree in this instance. It wouldn't take much time or effort to validate, and if the steps/sliders use thicker steel than the factory lift points, it is easily as safe if not safer.

Inconsistent and poor weld points could result in catastrophic failure. Rivian has no tenable way to verify the safety of 3rd party slider lift points. Sorry, I’m siding with Rivian on this -especially since 3rd party sliders exist that don’t block the OEM lift points. No excuses.

There are slider options that don't block the OEM lift points. For example, I've had the DCE sliders on my R1T for more than a year now. The truck has been into several Rivian SC for major service (including a new front subframe) and Rivian's been able to access and use the OEM lift/jack points without having to remove the sliders. So I empathize with Rivian SC staff and leadership. Lifting a 7,200lbs vehicle 5-6 feet into the air on non-OEM lift points is potentially dangerous and puts life and limb at risk for SC staff --and is potential a huge liability risk for Rivian as well.

My R1T was at the service center. They were installing a whole new front subframe so my vehicle needed alignment. They said it would be better if I had brand new tires. I told them I have a brand new set of Rivian sport dark wheels with brand new tires that I’ve purchased from another Rivian owner that I would like them to put on prior to the alignment. They said they could not put on the wheels and tires because I did not purchase them directly from them. I wasn’t sure they understood OEM wheels with factory installed tires,so I called back the next day to verify and was told the exact same thing.

Accessorize (with non-OEM parts) at your own risk has always been the mantra for all manufacturers.

Rivian won’t even warrant their own “puck” that came with the truck. Mine failed (violently broke apart under load) while changing a tire. When I brought it in and asked for another one, they said” yeah we know they are a problem and don’t have them anymore” I asked what they are providing with the new ones. She didn’t know but would get back to me. Been waiting over a year for that….crickets!!! So I’ll ask here, are they still providing the “hard plastic” pick with the OEM tire jack? Or have they switched to a better one?

The Orlando SC has lifted my truck twice and they haven’t complained yet… I’m on the EV Sportline sliders though…
I’m down with signing a waiver

Thanks very much for the video, Jimmy and Skyler! Yes! It is absurd that Rivian maintains this attitude/communication that installing running boards and rock sliders could/will void the vehicle's warranty. Why don't they have certified steps and sliders that they recommend to customers? Laziness. If they are serious about selling the R1 vehicles, they should do this in a heartbeat. It's infuriating that they don't. They are selling adventure vehicles, right? They want children and old people and short people to be able to get into and out of their vehicles comfortably, right? So what in the ___________ do they think they are doing here?

you can't rely on hotel wifi - next time, record audio locally as a backup and sync it in post...it'll sound better too.

Do you want to be our Editor? What we record is what we put on TH-cam unless it is crappy enough that it forces us to re-record. Hahaha. I don't have the brain-bites to edit.

Presumably my warranty wasn't voided when Discount Tire used the wrong jacking pucks on my vehicle and bent the underbody panels. Rivian can't keep the world from being chaotic and sliders are very minor on that spectrum.

I would say no. Even RIVIAN could screw that up.

Solution: Rivian should publish accessory guidance on where and how accessories should attach and what clearances need to be provided and areas that need to be avoided. With sliders for example, publish a diagram of where they should mount and what they should and shouldn't block or cover. If a 3rd party product is compliant with those guidelines, then Rivian should be OK with it.

Can rivian not have 3rd party manufacturers pay a license like Apple with their accessories?
