  • Service engine light on a 2016 Chevy Traverse resulted in a P0442 and P0496 error codes. Fuel cap seal checked out ok but we reset the codes and made sure the fuel cap was secured properly. The service engine light came on again after the codes were reset so we replaced the purge valve to resolve the issue.

Just wanted to say thank you! 2 1/2 years ago this part went bad especially when I was getting gas and would even cut off the engine. My mechanic charged me $85 in labor to replace this. I thought I would look it up and thanks to you. It only took me 12 minutes!!

This was perfect for me. My 2016 Traverse sounded like it would keep running even when I turned the engine off. Was also hard to start if I had just turned off the engine and tried to start it again. I appreciate this video.

Dealing with this right now on my wife's car. We were going to lunch yesterday and it had a really rough start and the rough idle for a few seconds. Check engine light came on, started flashing, and then stopped flashing but stayed on. Got the P0496 error code. I adjusted the gas gap, but the error hasn't gone away yet. Trying to get more info from my wife as to when the check engine light first came on. Mechanic friend of mine said it could be from over-filling the gas tank and she had just filled up the night before. Gonna try to reset it and see if it comes back on or not.

A common thing with a lot of youtube "how too" videos is giving a lot of needless information. This one isn't too bad since it doesn't have a catchy 30 sec to minute and a half open and spend a lot of time telling what you already searched to find out. My main complaint here is this guy could have let us know what size socket to use. Since I had to change this a couple years ago, just from memory, I think it's 10mm. I could be wrong.......

Why didn’t you actually replace the cap , instead of just resetting the code ? Same code on my 2012

Good question. Sometimes the only reason I see this error is because the cap wasn't tightened properly after a fill so the idea is to secure the cap and reset the codes to see if the error comes back. If the error code doesn't come back after a code reset, chances are it was just a loose cap that wasn't tightened properly. If the error does come back, then a loose cap likely isn't the problem and we have a problem with the cap seal or a solenoid valve. In my case, there were no cracks in the cap seal so I felt it was likely a faulty solenoid. The error has not come back after replacing the solenoid valve so that was indeed the problem. I would only replace the cap if you notice visible cracks or a dried up seal.

I did this yesterday and the light was still on. Do I have to have the codes cleared or should it go off on it’s own.

Yes, that's correct. You need to clear the codes for the light to go off.

It will shut off on it's own after 4 consecutive ignition cycles where the system self test runs and passes. The test will only be performed after the engine has been running for at least 10 minutes uninterrupted, the vehicle is stopped and idling, and there are no other active faults.

I cleared but it says it won't clear until the issue is fixed. I replaced the purge valve but its still on. Will it maybe go out on its own now?

When you said you cleared it, did it actually go off and then come back on or does your OBD not let you clear it? Yes, It's possible that it will clear on its own when driving.

It was a permanent code. But it did eventually just go out by itself after about a week

the engine light on mine took some time to go off. I forget how long, but it wasn't more than 10 or 20 miles.

This is my current issue too and I think I’m also dealing with a bad purge valve
