    Different coils feel very different. I tried a push11/6 and an ext V3 on my Pivot Firebird and whilst both were brilliant the characteristics were night and day. The push was very grounded and turned 2 dot blacks into a carpet. The EXT was also plush but very "playful" and actually made jumping and popping easier than the X2. Getting airborne on the push was a real struggle. I bought the EXT and haven't regretted it one bit. Try with different brands- a man with your following should have no trouble!!

    I agree with what you said at the end about getting a coil for this bike. Coil was great for the enduro, because that bike is designed for super chunky trails, but this time you've chosen a more playful bike and I think you should stick with air on this type of bike.

    I'm definitely a big fan of coil shocks as long as the bike is progressive enough (such as Evil Wreckoning). You can regain some of that poppy characteristic by increasing the low speed compression damping. Speeding up your rebound can also be beneficial in this regard. I'm running an Ohlins coil on my bike and I have it set up to feel more poppy than the air shock I was running previously. It's awesome.

    I have a dpx2 and a dhx2 for my fugitive LT. The coil feel is so much nicer than the air shock but it's sooo much heavier and not adjustable.

    I’m so glad you made this video. I’m upgrading the rear shock on my stumpjumper and had my heart set on coil for that plush feel and endless grip however I recently rode with someone on the exact same bike as me with the coil shock I wanted and he said it had snapped twice due to the linkage design and he was going back to air as a result. I asked him about the loss of pop from the bike and he said he had to run a stronger spring to stop the back end sucking to the floor and with him being about 40lb lighter than me, I knew it didn’t look good for coil. This video has confirmed all that for me and i will definitely choose air now.

    @AndZzo101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Linear coil shocks don't benefit all frame types. I ride a quite progressive Tyee CF and coil is making a lot of sense here, since its much more small bumb sensitive while making long chunky descends less exhausting for you and the shock itself (less friction for parts and no air heating up inside = constant feel). Aaaand also less stuff to fail = lower costs.

  • @flyindutchman2022
    @flyindutchman2022 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video - like always. I have always leaned to coil shocks also and get comments on many rides about how it is too heavy duty for our trails. Simply feels better to me in the rough stuff. Just a heads up that at 2:37 you mention that the coil shock is lighter and more tuneable but you meant the air shock. Doesn't really matter cuz we know what you meant but just so you're aware.

  • @aaritbabu3398
    @aaritbabu3398 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, I would like to have both which is what a lot of people are probably going to say so you can switch it out depending on what you're riding or what you feel like riding with, but if I had to choose one it would be the air since you can put volume reducers in it to make the bike bottom out less, while still not having a linear compression rate which can make the bike feel a little less playful.

  • @rascal1234

    Love my coil for gnarly bike park rides. To be honest, I loved my Rockshox Monarch rc3 plus better. Coil shock with a titanium spring is the good midde point in terms of weight that way you get no fade on fast repeated hits on long decents like you would with air and if you arent stick thin and have more meat on you then the coil with give you a consistent pop when you load the bike up to launch it off a section of trail

    Coil for sure. Major improvement everywhere unless youre standing when climbing. Way better in the rough, better at slow speed without stiction and the shock recovers from compression better for that reason as well. Even good for climbing traction and better braking traction on steep downhills.
    I have a "speed alloy racing"(non progressive) spring on my decoy because its a progressive rate linkage and a "race only spring"(progressive spring) on my linear travel meta am. Coil really opens up a trail. Out of the cane creek dbl barrel and the dvo jade i have i prefer the jade(great deal on those, jade x was sold out)/end novel😁
