    I thought my 170mm enduro bike was just as plush and easy to ride in the park until I brought both bikes and did a back-to-back test. Hands down, for me the DH bike was better.

      @VanCan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Yup! And that was one of the reasons I wanted to only ride my enduro, because a DH bike was too comfortable. I want my skills to develop on the bike I ride most of the time.

      @@VanCan Fair enough, and you did say that at the top. But you also went down a tech trail and then said the enduro was arguably better than a dh bike. I've been using my Ibis Ripmo as my park bike for the last 2 years and it's worked well. Though my usual park is Trestle which is mostly flow and jumps so is fairly friendly to trail and enduro bikes. Though I did take my Ripmo to Fernie Bike Park and was able to ride basically all of the single black tech with no issue and only a little slower than the DH bikes that were giving me tow ins, the only trail I didn't have the courage to try there was Klondike Karnage (which I believe is the 2nd steepest trail in Canada only behind the Dead Dog line on Psychosis DH).

    Can't hurt that the bike/skill level are a great match. Would probably still consider a downhill bike for alot if the trails you all ride in BC. But, it says alot about how well Enduro bikes are built these days to handle the type of tech that you regularly ride. Another great share, Nic, thanks!

    I have actually sold both my main trail bike and dh setup after picking up an advanced pro reign from giant, pretty much identical geo to the knolly but a tighter shorter rear, feels kind of like a mullet even though its a full 29er. Handy since I am only 5'10"
    The enduro scene is as varied as it is wild and there is an answer in the mix for everyone.

    For me the DH / trail bike combo makes the most sense. People are quick to justify getting rid of the DH bike if they are set on having an enduro. But if you want something that pedals a little bitter a 130 or 140 travel trail bike and a DH rig is a great combo

    • @VelkePivo
      @VelkePivo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I have a dh bike, two 170mm enduro bikes set up for bike park use and a 120/140 Evil Following. If I get rid of any bikes it would be the two enduro bikes. Having ridden the dh bike at the park back to back with the enduro sleds, I find I much prefer the dh bike. And the Following is such a crazily capable trail bike I don’t see a need for an enduro bike on any trail riding I’m likely to do. Now, if you can only have one bike then the enduro bike is a fantastic do-everything choice.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other combo that makes sense if you're only going to have 2 bikes is an enduro bike and a downcountry bike, especially if you're not riding a ton of park. Though for the "one bike to rule them all" quiver killer the 150ish travel AM bikes and some of the smaller enduro bikes like the RM Altitude and Yeti SB150 make sense if you are only going to run one bike.

    I found for me the perfect bike for between dh and enduro it is a Rocky Mountain slayer the same frame is used for both the enduro and dh versions of the bike and with the flip chip both can be the same slackness of 63.5° one downside is it is a bit heavy on flat but is surprisingly good on climbs

  • @nicks2716

    I haven’t ridden park yet, and I’m still somewhere in the low to mid-intermediate range rider (the kind of rider who does, but is challenged by, easy and mid-single blacks), but I’ve often thought it would make sense to ride your everyday bike in the park so as to likewise translate to your everyday trails. My current all-mountain bike probably would be outgunned by Whistler bike park, but on my next bike I plan on going full enduro. When I do, I’m surely going to use it if/when I do park.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put over 400 park miles on my Ripmo AF last season and it held up pretty well, granted I'm not hitting BC level tech at race pace, but still hitting a lot of jump lines at speed with a fair few cases and a few trillion braking bumps at mach chicken. Stumpy Evo alloy should be a great park bike, FSR should be smooth on braking bumps and the evo is one of the best cornering bikes on the market, and takes big hits well for its travel.

    About the "no token in the fork thing": i'm pretty much your size and weight (190cm tall x 95kg) and I ride an aggressive hardtail (Orbea Laufey 2020 with a yari 160 fork), I found that 1 token and 25% sag doesn't get me to use more than 80% travel on a debonair 2021 shaft, and beats my hands too. I recently upgraded the damper to RC2.1, again I wasn't using more than 80% travel, so I removed the token, sagged at recommended pressure for my weight and found the bottom of my fork pretty easily. So I added air until I wasn't bottoming out and using 90% of travel under normal riding conditions, and sag is at around 17% or less. It's like 25psi more than recommended! Is this normal?
    I've dialed compressions pretty much closed (-1HSC, -4LSC), rebound a couple clicks faster than recommended, and it feels pretty much OK everywhere. My trails are quite rough, EWS like (I'm in northern italy, close to the alps, a couple hours away from where Enduro MTB was actually born) so we ride roughs stuff all the time.
    what's your take on fork setup for bigger guys? especially now that you're experimenting with a hardcore hardtail yourself! kudos on that btw!

    im like 100x less skilled and brave than you so for me the added travel of the DH bike was my safety buffer to survive mistakes also running 27.5 with DD casings and cushcore on heavy rims all contributed to rolling resistance to reduce speed and stay off the brakes to reduce hand/arm pump.. BUT I sold the DH bike for a transition spire and my concern is not that it wont be capable, the bike is slacker and just as long as my DH bike and rides amazing but it just rolls so much faster and is so much lighter that controlling speed is more of an issue than it was on the DH bike. I should probably run a different wheel and tire setup for park to slow the rolling down on the spire.

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or work on braking technique to carry speed and then just slow down as you're coming into features. My Ripmo is the same, 29er, with just EXO+ and a fast rolling rear so gains speed quickly, so you need to be good at smooth braking to get into features at the right speed since it's easy to come in too fast on that bike.

    Majority of the bikes at Whistler bike park are single crown trail/enduro bikes. I don’t understand why people prefer that over a DH bike. For me, nothing beats a dual crown DH bike at Whistler.

    Might just be me, but the more I was riding my DH bike, the faster I was on an enduro/trail rig….

    Probably the best option is a 200+mm Enduro bike, like the Canfield One2, Orange 329, or Norco Range (with Cascade link).

    Sam Pilgrim rides hardtail Walmart bikes at Whistler. It's less about the bike than it is the rider. Ride what you like, not what other's prefer.

    So you sold the dh because it was too good 🧐
    Nah But I do understand what you're saying I have a shore and a aurum I'm way better on the aurum but to be honest I'm thinking about putting a 12sp on the dh and selling the enduro

    DH bikes are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Love it or hate it, enduro is the future 🤙🏽
