  • Does a coil shock feel good on a Stumpjumper EVO? We aim to answer that question in this 3 parts video series. So here in Part 3, Mike compares the Fox Float X and RockShox Super Deluxe air shocks to the two most common coil shocks installed on the Stumpjumper EVO, and those are the RockShox Super Deluxe Coil Ultimate and Ohlins TTX22M.2.

    Cannot praise enough - also for Turbo Levo SL Comp (alu) - this was after the Fox DPX failed, I switched to the RockShox Ultimate Coil RC2T with HBO, and ....600lbs spring. For my 216lbs and 41ish lbs of the bike... it is feeling great! It's my first coils shock, so I might be .. shocked, how smooth it is. Really good and set up exactly for me and TLsl - (195x52.5mm).

      I'll bounce back and forth between Fox and RockShox (and other brands) quite often as I like to change things out to test them to provide customer feedback. It also depends on how I'm riding at the moment. I would mainly only ride steep stuff gnarlier stuff a few years ago and preferred the more traction-oriented feel of Fox, but these days I've been mainly riding "trail" stuff and enjoy the supportive feeling of the RockShox suspension for that.

    I have run coils on several of my last few bikes and they were very much superior to the air shocks they came with based on how I like to ride. However they all had very progressive suspension curves that work well with the more linear nature of the coil. I ran the 2023 Super Deluxe Ultimate Coil with HBO on my 2022 Propain Tyee and agree, that is a sweet shock for the $$ and soo much better than the super deluxe ult air it came with. Saw zero reason to spend more on anything else. However my most recent bike, a 2023 Canyon Strive CFR came with a Fox X2 and it has a pretty progressive curve and I have to say, that once set up right, it has been feeling very good and my desire to swap to a coil has waned. Although I'd still love to test one out.

    I'm really happy with my set up. I went with a cane creek DB kitsuma with progressive coil. Only problem is I've lost about 15 lbs and now need a softer spring. The cane creek lets you adjust hsc lsc hsr and lsr. It took a while to get it dialed and I still mess around with it, but it feels great.

    Riding an S-Works Enduro and the RS SDLX ULT RC2T generates a hell of grip. I am flashed..., how simply RS kicked this already awesome runner into a whole new league of safe riding and confidence. Wouldn't have had compared Öhlins and RS using a different spring though. While the Öhlins air shocks are not my cup of tea (due to missing poppyness; the shock is just there, feeling a bit lazy like a hangovered morning), their coil shocks are actually quite ace, in particular the 22m.2 - I just didn't buy the Öhlins as I am doing all the services myself and Öhlins TTX22m.2 needs some nitrogen injection. The nitrogen I am exhaling here at home, well, is definitely nothing for a shock 😀But ya, totally second your impression of the RS SDLX ULT RC2T

    I’ve been running a sdlx air + a lyrik 170 on my stumpy for about a year now and am still running into bottom out issues- running ~22% sag front (2 tokens) and ~25% rear- I ride hard but I’ve gotten the front fairly figured out, but am getting harsh bottom outs on the shock 10+ times a ride. The trails I ride are very steep with flat drops, and yes it’s definitely not the right bike, but if y’all have any ideas I’d be interested to see. It’s a standard sdlx ultimate (no tune/hbo) max volume spacers, cascade link. Linear air can but I have the progressive on order.

      The Megatower is definitely progressive enough for a coil shock with a regular linear spring, but playing with a progressive spring could be always be a fun experiment!

    My YT Decoy felt more playful with the coil vs the Air. It was very strange. On the air shock, any time I tried boosting off a root, the rear tire was just stick to the ground. But after I installed the RS Ultimate coil, the bike was finally popping up like you would expect it to. This goes against everything that is known about coil vs air, but it's the experience that I got when I switched.

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing! There are definitely tons of variables when it comes to how a rear shock changes how a bike feels, and how you have it set up makes a huge difference! It sounds like you might be running fast rebound or a stiff spring on the coil shock to get that kind of performance out of it. Either way, glad you're stoked on the coil shock!
