This review is so cool, it is hard to find someone, who talks about his preferences not diving into the mainstream. You have your own opinion and liking what makes this video very honest. Keep doing what you love!
Yeah that's crazy that the GX gets chainslap. I run a XX and XO transmission and have no chain slap and super quiet. I wonder if they use a different clutch spring in the GX vs the XX & XO. End the end you got to run what works. Super rad build and also digging the pink color....
I believe they use the same spring and clutch assembly. I heard from someone that after they took off their derailleur for transport and put it back on, the chain slap magically appeared *
I saw the bike in person the other day. The color is definitely an eye catcher, and the bike is overall beautiful. I’m not a good enough rider or knowledgeable enough to have much input on the other specs, but sure like watching Nic ride it.
I have the non transmission gx axs and have the same clutch problem where the clutch breaks away under impacts and I have a ton of pedal feedback whenever the chain tension returns. It drives me crazy.
It's not only the clutch. The heavier axs derailleur slaps around pivot point which is the screw that fixes the derailleur to the hanger. If you disassemble the screw bushing and replace the red o ring with tighter ones that will prohibit movement of the whole derailleur body it'll do more than shortening the chain for you. The AXS stuff is only half baked but people buy into the stuff due to marketing
Love seeing what others are doing. I have a new bike and I am struggling to get it right. It just is slow. I want to make a review but I don't want to be negative until I've tried everything available to me ( within reason )
I climb pretty often, usually a couple times a week. I’ll run 20 ish front 27 rear. With dual max grip it’s definitely slower but worth it for the down
Man that color is sooo amazing! Looks really sick. I'm considering those cranks as well vs ee wings. I am not sure. The ee wings are much lighter but 5 Dev look really sick. I run nothing but oval rings too. Thanks for the code for the NOBL wheels, got a set of TR37 too. Great wheels!
You could in theory use TRP levers with the Maven calipers to get the best of both worlds. Maybe put one on the front of your hardtail and ride some blue trails to test how it is.
@@CitrusclipsMTB the cage for the mechanical and axs eagle groupset has two different point for the spring to attach. So therefore you can have more tension without needing to cut the chain shorter. I'm not entirely sure if the transmission cage does have that too tho. Axs is a shity system anyways. After riding it since it came out, I'm very happy that I went back to mechanical X01 for Enduro. Quiet, easy, less expensive and no batteries to die
I've never ridden a SRAM setup that didn't chainslap, the SRAM clutch is just not quite as strong as the Shimano one. Though SRAM is easier to service. I've tried GX Transmission and liked it, but not enough to speed THAT much money to replace my perfectly good XT
Have you ever tried the MTX Gold pads? Those with the 2mm Galfer rotors have been my go-to on all my bikes (as a fellow non-featherweight that likes ALL the power)
@@VanCan I was bummed the Mavens launched a couple months after I bought a set of code stealth ultimates haha. Definitely want to give them a try though, maybe on my other bike with the Hope Tech 4’s…those were kind of underwhelming.
I didnt have sram so not related but had xtr derailleur with archer electronic shifter after a year the archer motor burned and cie said no warranty only a deal on a new one so i put back xtr shifter goes real good i dont miss electronic shifting easyer to fix in the trails and cheaper 😊
So sick! For 180-lb, what coil weight would you recommend for the Chilcotin? Just got one but not sure on sizing. I ride same trails as you, Seymour mostly
What's your chainring size? I also really like ovals, but Hope, whose cranksets I really want to upgrade to, doesn't make ovals at all anymore, and in any event never made ovals smaller than 30t, and nothing at all smaller than 28t. So for example, my rigid bike came stock with 170mm cranks and a 30t ring. Going to oval and 155, I should go down to a 26t oval. I've been running a 30t oval, which is fine (it's going to make me stronger if nothing else), but I'd be really interested to try a chainring of the 'correct' size, that would also fit with the Hope crank arms etc.
Great bike check. Hopefully SRAM will fix the clutch issue on their Transmission. By the way, will we see you give the new Knolly's Fugitive a test ride? I guess given the travel it is pretty much an underbike for the kind of rides you usually do but I do wish to hear your opinion on it.
I swear the SRAM chainslap varies from product to product. Had a stumpjumper Evo with cable GX, and it had the worst chainslap ever. Got a new one with GX axs (not t type) and it's dead quiet.
It’s funny cause a lot of people say the opposite, that cable GX has a better clutch than AXS. They might just have very inconsistent clutch quality so it varies even between the same product.
@@VanCan Nice! I'm currently on CC+Exo+ and I've been liking but thinking about try DD casings with no Cushcore just to save some weight and was curious what a rider with much more experience thought.
Not really my area of expertise and I was thinking about getting SRAM GX T-Type myself. Does this problem persist with X01 version too? I've only had shimano before, and my future bike (arrives in 2 weeks) is equipped with Mech GX so I was kinda looking forward to upgrading it to the latest money drain cause of shifting under load selling point. Sick bike btw!
It’s only a problem if you prefer a firm clutch. Some people in the comments have noted they don’t mind. If the mech gx works well for you then I’d say the transmission is an upgrade.
Great Bike, I would love to get the nobl wheels but it's VERY expensive :) Also, it's hard to find the exact model I need for my SantaCruz Nomad 6 MX but it's probably just me who is just not technical enough. I am going to Whisler this summer from Montreal, wondering if I stop by in their shop, can they build a set a wheels on the same day ? :)
They probably can, especially if you give them a heads up. They definitely can put together a Mx Wheelset! They have a ton of hubs there and I’m sure they’ve got what you’d need. There’s also a discount code in the description if that helps :)
Out of curiosity, any frame problems with anything you've ever ridden that was aluminum? I remember the Carbon-Nic era where it seemed like you were breaking a lot of frames / triangles.
Wait what's your rear coil? In the video, you have 500lb but you say 550lb. Sorry, I'm a huge fan of your riding and cause of you I finally got my first full-suspension bike ever, an Enduro sled of course! hahaha And I got the DHX2 as well and am just very curious about what you ride. Your videos have reignited my mountain bike passion to unreached levels. Thank you so much man, keep them coming!
Try DT Swiss parts. I haven't had anything better than that. Dt 240 classic hubs and a good dt rim (ex511 or fr541) dt competition 2.0 1.8 spokes and DT Squorx Brass Nipples with Pro lock and you won't touch your wheel for years. The only thing I'd suggest is, when you have your wheel build, don't ride it before you haven't unscrewed the Ratchet ring and have put some dt swiss grease on the threats. But a well build DT Swiss wheel wild hold up better than anything else on the market.
Had the same issue with the GX AXS (non transmission). Got a lighter cage which in theory would reduce chainslap as it won't move as much and it worked well. Zero chainslap now. Not sure what they have for transmission in terms of aftermarket cages though, I think cascade made one?
The best point made here is the carbon rim’s every time people look at me weird when I say carbon rims are strong and super reliable. They always have something shit to say yet they don’t have one set of carbon rims. Good carbon rims you not going break unless you a shitty rider.
Interesting that the mechanical aspects of the transmission are a little lacking. Computer controlled timing in shifting is cool, but hardware will always be paramount
My friend is 164 cm tall, he has a GT Force in size M and has a reach of 440mm, for him this is a really big bike, but when I showed him Knolly, who has a reach of 463mm in size S, he said that this is absurd. I completely agree with him, now i have Transition Spire XL, 503 real reach and base 1325, with my height 190cm and with a long torso with and arms, this is the maximum size that I would like. I like Knolly, but I don't understand their sizing chart.
There’s a lot to unpack with geo, including personal preference. But at 183cm I’m very happy with my large and even run a 48mm stem again. At the end of the day all I can say is don’t knock it until you try it.

I have xo and no chain slap I can hear
I have xo transmission and can confirm chain slap over my other bike with xt. Its very noticeable on big jumps
I have a XO and an XX SL and no chain slap.

Look at the Fraezen Cage for the Transmission, that should solve your problems. I like mine for the mechanical eagle group and it's holding up great.
Good idea but it’s still the roller bearing clutch mechanism he had problems with, not the cage
@@CitrusclipsMTB the cage for the mechanical and axs eagle groupset has two different point for the spring to attach. So therefore you can have more tension without needing to cut the chain shorter. I’m working on borrowing a fugitive!
Those oilslick spokes are sick! Can you buy them separately from Nobl or do they just sell them with complete wheel-builds?
You can ask them to build your wheels with them!

Gonna build up a new Knolly frame for next season to replace my Gen 5 Chilcotin...torn between the new Chilcotin and the Fugitive to be honest
Same.
Get the Chilcotin 155 frame, best of both worlds IMO.
Why not run a stem between both sizes like a 40mm?
Have you considered trying the DoubleDown casings without Cushcore?
