I’m on board with Lenny, I think his work will make a huge impact in saving the diesel community. When I was younger I thought the black smoke was cool but as I’ve gotten older I could care less but I do still like throwing a 5” straight pipe on and if if you really get on the pedal and a little bit of smoke comes out that would be fine, it’s when you’re going 10mph and it’s smoking out the street there’s an issue
Get the government out of the industry!
I agree. Hold the drivers accountable just like we hold shooter’s accountable. I’m 27, just bought my first Cummins. I’m in ca, I’d love to delete and have clean tunes. Black smoke is and always was tacky.
Always a good episode when Lenny is on!
Two gas vehicles that Ive tried to register here in TX failed emissions checks. No check engine lights on... The first had leaky injectors, the second had lifters that stuck.
That last part about anger management and problem solving is some elite information though 🙏
Lenny is great! Loved the Jocko story. Great Americans talking about great Americans. Very good episode. I like Lenny even more now. Lol.
In anything that looks like the near future - the USA doesn't have nearly the electrical output to run everything on batteries.
I will say, I have seen amazing tests done by GM engineers. Everything from figuring out how to make more precise engines to figuring out a better tune to maximum efficiency AND emissions.
"the USA doesn't have nearly the electrical output to run everything on batteries." LOL.
In my experience GM would struggle keeping an igloo from melting in Antarctica.
I see a lot of opinions on EGT’s. I have a 97 Cummins 12v and tow and try to stay under 1250 towing, but the truck seems to not care at that temp. What do you consider safe?
I agree with everything but the ticketing statement. Insurance isnt technically required either, we just got bullied into that "requirement"
Please adjust audio on your end I have volume wide open and can barely hear you. Thanks
The solution for stock calibration smoke that I've found on my 1st gen was a turbo that is on the pipe (2stroke turm) by 1000 rpm. Otherwise on grades at 55mph it billows black from lack of charge air, a result of pressure delta across the turbine. Or run down a gear and rev the piss out of it.
I kind of wonder if Cali will ban and not approve any CARB applications for diesel mods once they ban combustion engines in 2035.
I have one question. Now that gasoline cars are going to direct injection, it is my understanding that their particulate emissions are also going up (look at the tailpipes of a new corvette...) Will gasoline cars have to have DEP?
There have been particulate filters on direct injected gasoline engines in Europe for years now. If you follow emissions standards in the US vs EU over the years you notice they are very much politically driven.
I don’t think direct injection is the cause of sooty exhaust pipes on modern vehicles, DI and higher pressure fuel delivery significantly contribute to better atomization, more complete combustion, and better fuel management which reduce emissions. From my understanding , the soot that you see at the tailpipe is from variable valve timing and increased valve overlap.
And because I like to poke bears, since you referenced GM engineers in another comment & corvettes here, low tension piston rings, improper crankcase ventilation, poor quality hydraulic lifter, and AFM pitfalls will sure give ya a sooty tailpipe. 😝
DEP? I’m guessing you mean DEF? DEF is part of the SCR which reduces NOx. DPF is the component that captures particulate matter.
-If a gasoline engine is equipped with a particulate filter is it called a GPF?
Talking and the brake pedal are not always the right answer. My motto
Well....not everyone can afford top of the line smoke free tunning, or know where to find it...I maintain my rig meticulously ....for the most part it doesn't smoke, however, when heavy in the throttle it'll puff a bit...I bought the truck deleted and it used to roll coal every where, so I seeked out other tuning, and it's pretty clean now, iam trying like hell to get this rig tip top, but I don't have endless funds and time to keep searching for proper tuning, I just don't think we need to go down the road of pulling every guy over that has smoke coming from there tailpipe, some people like myself are trying to do something about it, the last thing I need is a ticket, however it is a problem when someone is leaving a black cloud at every stop light...just my 2 cents( John ,NC...54 yrs old, love my 4th gen)
John you’re part of the problem! That truck must to be crushed and you need to buy an electric scooter. 😂🤣😂
At least that’s what the kgb I mean the epa told me to tell you.
Kinda hard to source good tuning when those companies / individuals have been shutdown eh?
@@preachers4135 Ill contact the junk yard today to have truck picked up, and start looking for a scooter 🤣.....NOT !
I had an 06’ LBZ 3500 that was stock with EGR and exhaust intact. That truck smoked slightly only when floored from a low RPM. Now I have a 16 LML 2500 that has been deleted. It smokes less than the stock LBZ when floored, yet it also gets arguably worse fuel economy. This leads me to believe that modern tuners are leaving power and efficiency on the table to play it safe during the current political climate. Is it possible that a tune can be too “clean”? Is my engine running lean at low boost if it BARELY smokes when I floor it?
Lenny with the game shit yeahhh
“ trees need some of the pollutants to grow” wtf!? 😂
Not for nothing man, the problem is too much government in our business!
You nailed it when you said that people rolling coal and driving smokey trucks should be ticketed. I'm waiting for the EPA to crack down on people selling deleted trucks, because it is going to happen.
They have they are looking for listing that say something about deleting. There is a truck that went to the crusher for posting an add. They were given the option to reinstall $$$, truck was worth more as scrap than to fix at that point.
@@daviddroescher It wasn't worth more as scrap. Someone probably parted it out. If people didn't throw away their emissions equipment it wouldn't cost a fortune to return a truck to stock.
@SomeTechGuy666 your correct he tryed to part out the truck and the EPA blocked his efforts as the only acceptable out come was ?Return to full stock with verification ,a receipt from scrap yard showing the VIN, or go to jail.
@@daviddroescher EPA can't stop someone from parting out a truck.
@@SomeTechGuy666 look it up.
I agree that they should NOT be able to ,but it is .
$ 700 to 7 million fine will not make a factory spec 100% 1st gen not smoke ( you said it 10min earlier Lenny and i live it). It will kill the mechanical sector of the industry .
But Lenny sure sounded good didn’t he. I wonder how much the kgb I mean the epa threatened I mean persuaded him to tell you that exact speech.
No one should be telling anyone else what they can and can’t do with their vehicle
This is America and rolling coal is a freedom that we have. I liked the guest until he starts saying he would give a pre emission diesel truck 700 dollar tickets for a bit of coal 😂 come on bro this is America!
I love it when guys like you two tell us that batteries aren't recyclable, the grid won't support EVs and lithium mining is way worse than oil and gas extraction, processing and burning in an ICE. Open your eyes !
ICE is dead and for good reason. The only thing the F150 Lightning doesn't do better than the F150 ICE is range.
If only you knew how badly they fall short in many areas….
@@Redbloodroadrunner Oh, please tell us. LOL.
@@SomeTechGuy666 I’m good, the research is out there and if you don’t know already, Lenny explained the definition of ignorant.
@@Redbloodroadrunner Nothing better than a bunch of rednecks telling the rest of the world what can't be done... when the rest of the world is doing it.
@@Redbloodroadrunner "If only you knew how badly they fall short in many areas…." Diesel engines will hardly go 100K with the emissions equipment and you are knocking EVs ? Have you seen the price of diesel lately ?
